JODY LYNN NYE Author & Writers of the Future Judge – Biography Jody Lynn Nye lists her main career activity as ‘spoiling cats.' When not engaged upon this worthy occupation, she writes fantasy and science fiction books and short stories. Since 1987 she has published over 50 books and more than 200 short stories. Among her novels are her epic fantasy series The Dreamland, Mythology 101 contemporary humorous fantasy series, three medical science fiction novels in the Taylor's Ark series, and Strong Arm Tactics, humorous military science fiction. Jody also wrote The Dragonlover's Guide to Pern. She also collaborated with Anne McCaffrey on four SF novels, including Crisis On Doona (a New York Times and USA Today bestseller. Jody co-authored the Visual Guide to Xanth with author Piers Anthony. She has edited two anthologies, Don't Forget Your Spacesuit, Dear!, and Launch Pad, and written two short story collections, A Circle of Celebrations, holiday SF/fantasy stories, and Cats Triumphant!, SF and fantasy feline tales. Nye wrote eight books with the late Robert Lynn Asprin, License Invoked, and seven set in Myth Adventures universe. Her newest series is the Lord Thomas Kinago humorous space opera, beginning with View from the Imperium (Baen Books). Her newest books are Moon Tracks (Baen), YA science fiction with Dr. Travis S. Taylor. Rhythm of the Imperium, third in the series; and Once More, With Feeling, a nonfiction book on revising manuscripts. Over the last forty-ish years, Jody has taught writing workshops and participated on hundreds of panels at science-fiction conventions. She runs the two-day writers' workshop at Dragon Con. Jody is the Coordinating Judge of the Writers of the Future and has been a judge since 2016. In June 2022, she received the Falstaff Books Polaris Award for mentorship and guidance of new talent. Jody lives in the northwest suburbs of Atlanta, with her husband Bill Fawcett, and three feline overlords, Athena, Minx, and Marmalade. “I chose to join the judging staff of the WotF Contest to help bring out the best of new writers. This is a forum that gives them the opportunity to be noticed in a greater market than they would normally enjoy. I feel that the ongoing competition makes writers work harder and reach farther than they might writing on their own. On October 14, 1987, Reba McClure and her eighteen-month-old daughter, Jessica, stopped by the Midland, Texas home of her sister for a visit. As Reba sat in the backyard watching Jessica play with some neighborhood children, she heard the phone ring and went inside to answer it. When McClure returned to the backyard a few minutes later, she saw the other children staring at the ground on the far-side of the yard, but Jessica was nowhere to be seen. To Reba McClure's absolute horror, while she was inside on the phone, Jessica had fallen twenty-feet down into the well on her sister's property and become lodged in a section only fourteen-inches wide. Rescue teams arrived at the house not long after Jessica fell into the well, but the situation proved far more complicated than anyone had expected; they needed to dig a parallel shaft to rescue the girl, but any amount of significant vibration in the earth could have collapsed the well entirely. In the early days of cable news twenty-four-hour news coverage, the rescue of Jessica McClure became one of the most watched events in the United States. However, while the rescue of the girl was everyone's primary concern, the wall-to-wall coverage itself quickly became a major part of the story, as ordinary smalltown Americans were shoved into the spotlight and questions over rights to the story (and rights to privacy) took center stage.
