In this episode, we're talking about stevia - not really the stevia derived from the plant. We're talking about a "stevia" product developed by Cargill and Royal DSM which is the synthetic biology and scientific fermentation of genes and yeast, and it is showing up in our food supply chain as a trademarked product called EverSweet™. This zero-calorie, "non-artificial" sweetener is designed to “urgently advance sugar reduction around the world" and ”to support good health and well being in our societies”. There is no scientific evidence to back up the claim that it supports good health and well being. They claim this product is "sustainable", but it seems more like greenwashing, and there is a lot of money invested into this venture. It begs the question....cui bono? I think you know the answer...but I hope you listen in to find out. Share this episode with someone you love and I'll see you on the other side of the plate. Chow.

Before the news of the fires in the Amazon drew national attention, environmental organization Mighty Earth was calling out American agricultural giant Cargill for its contributions to deforestation in South America, among numerous other environmentally destructive practices. In this episode, host Lisa Held talks to Mighty Earth CEO Glenn Hurowitz about the scathing report the organization released (and the New York Times covered) in July—Cargill: The Worst Company in the World. They discuss why Cargill is such a standout offender when it comes to environmental degradation, how industrial animal agriculture contributes to deforestation and other issues, and what can be done. The Farm Report is a Heritage Radio Network show, recorded live on Full Service Radio at the LINE Hotel in Adams Morgan, Washington DC. The Farm Report is powered by Simplecast.
Two stories this week with ESG glasses: Capital One does not know who is in your wallet (0:38), and NGOs call Cargill the worst company in the world (10:25), all on the record.

The Angry Clean Energy Guy on a virus infecting sustainability: Big Oil are deliberately poisoning what sustainability means, diluting its impact and reach, and they are doing that in plain sight, borrowing the language and applying it to terrible initiatives and companies all designed to propagate our use of harmful fossil fuels and indeed increase it, rather than decrease it, when everyone knows we need to power the world with renewables as well as pretty much phase out our use of oil, gas and coal by 2050 – to have any chance of avoiding catastrophic climate change. Winner of the week: Asset managers Sarasin, for divesting from Shell while not mincing words. Villain of the week, Cargill, named “Worst Company in the World” by NGO Mighty Earth

They discovered a simple truth—and acted on it: Not all customers are the same, regardless of how they appear on the surface. The most successful companies, from Amazon to Best Buy, understand their best customers are their most valuable asset, and they tailor their acquisition, development, and retention efforts to those customers. In The Customer Centricity Playbook, Wharton School professor Peter Fader and Wharton Interactive’s executive director Sarah Toms help you see your customers as individuals rather than a monolith, so you can stop wasting resources by chasing down product sales to each and every consumer. In this book, you will learn how to: -Develop a customer-centric strategy for your organization -Understand the right way to think about customer lifetime value (CLV) -Finetune investments in customer acquisition, retention, and development tactics based on customer heterogeneity -Foster a culture that sustains customer centricity, and also understand the link between CLV and market valuation -Understand customer relationship management (CRM) systems, as they are a vital underpinning for all these areas through the valuable insights they provide Fader’s first book, Customer Centricity, quickly became a go-to for readers interested in focusing on the right customers for strategic advantage. The former “Worst Company in America” is apparently trying to regain the title, or at least that’s what they might want us to think with the latest news about their monetization of Star Wars Battlefront 2 and the massive internet backlash against it. As if that wasn’t bad enough, they also announced that they purchased Respawn, the developers behind the Titanfall franchise, so expect another studio closure in a few years.
