In this episode of Connected Leadership Bytes, Andy Lopata revisits his interviews with Jennifer Sundberg, Co-CEO of Board Intelligence and author of Collective Intelligence: Build a Business That's Smarter Than You. Jennifer advocates for leveraging the collective brainpower of teams rather than relying solely on superstar leaders. She sites examples from Apple and Amazon, where groundbreaking ideas like the iPhone and Amazon Prime emerged from teams, not just their iconic founders. Andy and Jennifer discuss cultures of humility, curiosity and open questioning to foster innovation. Leaders must recognise they don't have all the answers and encourage contributions without fear of criticism. Over-reliance on top-down decision-making can slow progress and waste intellectual potential. Jennifer also explores reverse mentoring, learning from failure, and the power of asking “how” and “why” questions to drive deeper understanding. The episode underscores the importance of clear communication, shared critical thinking, and inclusivity in decision-making. Jennifer's insights provide actionable strategies for leaders to harness collective intelligence and build smarter, more resilient businesses. Key Takeaways: 1. Collective intelligence is crucial for business success – Great businesses aren't built by superstar leaders alone but by tapping into the collective brainpower of teams. 2. Top-down leadership has downsides 3.Questioning culture is essential – Simple "how" and "why" questions can drive deeper understanding. 4. Clear communication matters – Complex information needs to be communicated clearly and concisely. 5. Focus is vital alongside openness – While encouraging new ideas, asking "Is our focus still the right focus?" periodically helps balance openness with strategic direction. 6. Even great thinking and critical analysis can fail if the organisational culture isn't ready to accept challenging ideas. A widespread appetite for questioning and critical thinking is necessary across the whole organisation. In this episode of the Connected Leadership Podcast, Andy Lopata hosts Jennifer Sunberg, a former Ernst & Young London Entrepreneur of the Year and the Co-CEO of Board Intelligence. Her new book, co-authored with Pippa Begg, "Collective Intelligence: Build a Business That's Smarter Than You," encourages incorporating greater collective intelligence in businesses. Theconversation revolves around how businesses can promote intelligence and innovative thinking, not just from the business leaders but from everyone involved. Jennifer points out that many leaders assume their intelligence and ideas are solely responsible for business success, forgetting the power that lies in the team's collective brainpower. Being overly reliant on a superstar leader can hinder real progress. These leaders might be amazing, but their brilliance doesn't necessarily mean the business's success is solely dependent on them. Jennifer cites well-established organisations like Apple and Amazon as examples, revealing that some of their game-changing decisions like the iPhone and Amazon Prime did not come directly from Steve Jobs or Jeff Bezos but from their respective teams. The challenge lies in enabling everyone in a business to contribute ideas without fear of criticism or backlash. Jennifer believes that fostering a culture of humility and questioning is crucial for developing collective intelligence. Leaders must operate from an understanding that they don't know everything. She argues for a change in the predominant focus on having answers to fostering an environment that encourages asking questions. The downside of a top-led approach involves speed, waste, and hubris. Restricting decision-making power to a single person slows response time in a fast-paced business environment. Not tapping into the intelligence of all team members creates intellectual waste. Andy and Jennifer discuss the power of curiosity, the importance of reverse mentoring, providing truthful information even when it is not easy, and the need to normalise learning from failures. Jennifer states that asking simple questions, particularly the 'how' and 'why', can lead to a deeper understanding of issues and challenges. She further explains that using questions as tools for genuine inquiry and understanding can prove more valuable than using them as weapons.  Andy and Jennifer also highlight the importance of clear and concise communication, stressing how the right kind of communication can enhance the collective intelligence of a group. Jennifer touches upon the concept of asking 'why', 'so what', and 'now what' questions. Finally, they emphasise the importance of maintaining the right focus in the face of multiple new ideas, and the pitfalls that can occur when collective intelligence doesn't find a receptive audience. Jennifer suggests that shared critical thinking and questioning are required to avoid negative outcomes.  Jennifer shares thought-provoking anecdotes, personal experiences, and scholarly wisdom, ensuring that by the end of the conversation, you'll view leadership through a new, enlightening lens. Succotash Epi352: Last Clips Before Hiatus

Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 18, 2023 35:22

Can you feel it, listener? I can. I can feel it. The warm, sultry breeze of our impending Succotash hiatus is gently wafting around the next bend in our feed. I'm your every-other-weekly-host Marc Hershon and welcome to Episode 352, which I'm calling “Last Clips Before Hiatus” because, well, it's our second-to-last episode before we take a break BUT the last one in which we'll be featuring clips. I'll tell you more about what our LAST show before jump the tracks is going to be like toward this end of this blog entry but, for now, let's share this time together as just another in the long lines of Succotash episodes where we feature clips from other comedy soundcasts across the internet.   Before I get to what I have in store for you, let's recall what Epi351, Tyson Saner's final solo hosting episode before the break, was like last week. His was the first episode to officially enter our 12th year of soundcasting. We started in April of 2011 so Tyson got the glory and the honor of being the first of us to break the tape on year 12 with “The Penultimate Pre-Hiatus Show”, which featured clips from comedy soundcasts Holidays After Dark, What Went Wrong, and Bit Weird But Fair Enough (I Guess). Tyson wrapped up that episode with a very sincere thanks and farewell for now and I think you'll get a great deal out of listening to that installment of the show.   As for me, I'm intending to go out with this show as it was originally conceived: By featuring a collection of clips from soundcasts that we've not featured before. Sure, we've occasionally dipped back into the same pool now and again to feature some faves – but our overall design and intent has been to bring you what's fresh and new, at least our ears and quite possibly yours. Bearing that in mind, I have clips from Literally with Rob Lowe, a new sitcom soundcast called Popcorn For Dinner, and a show from across the Pond in England – a well-regarded standby there called Always Be Comedy. Since this will be our last opportunity to do so for awhile, I'm going to feature an audio essay from comedian and friend of the show Dan St. Paul, from his Slices blog, entitled “Slave to the Machines”.   This lovely cavalcade of clippage is brought to you, as always, by Henderson's Pants and their new Bottoms Up Cargo Pants, a recent introduction designed by our own announcer, Bill Heywatt, for that discriminating boozehound on the go.   As I said, toward the end of this episode I let you know what's in store for the final-final episode next week, as well as a few wrap-up thoughts from my brain and my heart as we hit our 12th year anniversary.   CLIPS   Literally with Rob Lowe Is there more of a consummate celebrity in the entertainment world today than Rob Lowe? He's an actor who has created an indelible brand for and of himself, he's never really had any controversy around him, and he's basically a Hollywood homegrown talent who's been around since he was a kid. A few yeas ago he started popping up as a guest on a number of soundcasts and it wasn't long until he pulled the cloak off of Literally, the show he hosts every week, mostly talking to friends that he pulls right out of his own cell phone. He recently talk with Levar Burton, famous for playing Geordi LaForge on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Before that, he broke through as Kunta Kinte, a young slave on the Roots miniseries. And he talks a bit about both those experiences in this clip.   Popcorn For Dinner This next entry is brand new. It's only been out for about 8 or 9 weeks at this point, which means its first season is coming to a close and you can binge it. Because it's one of the first full-on soundcast situation comedies that I've heard. Popcorn for Dinner is, first of all, produced by one of my favorite production outfits on the planet, which is Kelly&Kelly out of Vancouver, Canada. We've featured other shows from them before, including This Sounds Serious and Dexter Guff is Smarter Than You. This new offering is largely written and created by comedian Maddy Kelly – no relation to Pat Kelly or Chris Kelly, who ARE related, but maybe it helps to have them set a show up if your last name IS Kelly. It features former Nickelodean star Ciara Bravo as the narrator, and stars Maddy Kelly, Charlie Foster, Jillian Ebanks and Ben Fawcett as four friends in their early 20s as they try to make it on their own, despite the fact that none of them know what that looks like...at all. It's got all the tropes that make classic sitcoms identifiable including a laugh track. It's meta, it's corny, it's funny and – after I listened to the first three episodes, I was pretty much hooked. The clip I have for you is from Episode 6 and I picked the very opening of the show so you can easily pick up on the vibe – they have the opening teaser scene, the set-up for the episode and your get to hear what the main characters each sound like.     Always Be Comedy I'm not sure how long Always Be Comedy has been cranking out episode in Britain but, given their list of guests, it's been going awhile. Hosted by comics James Gill and Tim Lewis, they invite other comedians in to chat and to curate their dream gig – o talk about all the elements that they would bring together to make a dynamite boffo show. This clip doesn't quite get to that part of the hosts' chat with guest, England comedy legend Stewart Lee, which is well worth strapping in for given his experience. Instead, Stewart waxes on a bit about some of his contemporary veteran comedians.   Dan St. Paul: Slave to the Machines Which brings us to the end of our featured clips this week and right up to the doorstep of comedian and friend of the show Dan St. Paul. He's been writing these humorous essays for his “Slices” blog on Substack for a while now, and I had him record a few and then added some music and effects to them. That was impetus enough for Dan to turn to his pal Jimmy Goings and really get into producing them. Here's his latest, entitled “Slave to the Machines”.   That is going to do it for this final solo episode before our Succotash hiatus begins. As I teased at the top of the show, I can let you know that next week, for our 12th Anniversary Show, Tyson Saner and I will be joining forces to celebrate the blessed event. Joining us will be longtime friend of the show who we first met in Episode 36 back in the Fall of 2012, Travis Clark. We'll look back and reminisce not just about Succotash but also about soundcasting and how far it come since we first fired up the mics in 2011. That's next week, in this very same feed, so don't miss it!   As for me, I am sometime startled to wake up and discover this Succotash thing has been going as long as it has. I've made a lot of friends, literally around the globe, through the network of soundcasters out there. I think one of the things that we'll do as we sail into our 12th year is that I may just have to stop beating the drum to call these things soundcasts instead of podcasts. We gave it a valiant effort. I don't think anyone would deny us that. We'll see.   I have to thank Joe Paulino, first and foremost, which helped me breathe life into this concept through the auspices of Studio P, his “home of the hit” in Sausalito, California. And for introducing us to Bill Heywatt, our erstwhile and often tanked booth announcer. Scott Carvey, one of Dana Carvey's brothers, created our theme music from me sending him a jazz tune I liked and doing his own interpretation of the concept so we could have some music free and clear. Kenny Durgis is our booth assistant who, frankly doesn't do much more than complain but we gotta acknowledge the little guy.   More than anyone connected to the show, my heartfelt and deep gratitude goes to Tyson Saner, who went from contributing a few odd clips now and again to becoming the show's Associate Producer to full-blown host, slipping into the Big Chair for several years while it stepped into the background as Executive Producer and got to take a big breather.   I would be remiss if I didn't thank my wife, the lovely and talented Debra Hershon. While she's never spent a moment hanging around this show, if not for her support and giving me the space to create and shave time off of our personal time – sometimes on while on vacation and sometimes even urging me to head to LA or shows in San Francisco so I could get interviews and such, this show certainly wouldn't have happened.   Finally, of course, there's you. Our listener. Whether this is the very first time you've filled your ears with Succotash or if you've been with us for every one of the 352 episodes we've dropped, this has always been intended for you. As a wayfinding tool to help you hack through the soundcast wilderness to find fun, new shows to listen to. And whether it was from those heady early days when we actually would show up on the front page of Apple's downloads or, more often bouncing along with just blips on the download radar, we know that you've been out there putting up with our audio shenanigans. So thank you, thank you, thank you.   We'll be here next year with that 12th anniversary show. And then Tyson, Bill, Joe, and I are going to take a little break. Catch our breaths and figure out how and when we'll return. This show maybe exactly like you hear it today. Or we may change up the format and try some different things. Hang in there and we'll let you know what's what.   And in the meantime, if in the next week or so you have someone tap you on the shoulder while you're working out in the gym and they ask what you're listening to on your earbuds, won't you please pass the Succotash?   — Marc Hershon

Hello, listener. Glad you're here! I am Marc Hershon, as stated so eloquently for our booth announcer, Bill Heywatt, here to present Episode 295 of Succotash, THE Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. Before I get into what's in store this week, did you happen to catch last week's Epi294 with my punctual and well-read co-host Tyson Saner? He brought the heat, with clips from a trio of shows, including Wheel of Randy - A Randy Newman podcast, Podcast Killed the Video Star, and The Hollywood Experience. If you missed it run, don't walk, to download or stream it from any of the wonderful distribution points on the World Wide Web, including Apple & Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, YouTube, Soundcloud, Audible and many others, including our own homesite, SuccotashShow.com, where you're find a blog entry for every show we've done for the past 10 years and 11 months with clickable links to the shows and the social media accounts for the hosts and many of the guests. I just want to take a moment to acknowledge the international clown fiesta that Vladimir Putin is orchestrating on the people of Ukraine. There's not much that we, as the hosts of a comedy soundcast can do to actively help the situation. But we do stand in support of the people and country of Ukraine and, just as we're no longer distributing Succotash via that streaming service that Neil Young doesn't like, we also will not feature clips from any comedy soundcasts produced in Russia. It's not much but it's what we've got to offer. All right. Enough of that. Let me take your mind off the troubles of the day with the distraction of a quartet of soundcast clips that we have never featured before: Comedy Gold Minds with Kevin Hart, Hypochondriactor, The Extramundane with Max West, and a brand new offering on the podwaves entitled Let's Make A Sci-Fi. We're also brought to you this week, as usual, by Henderson's Pants and their Scavenger Slax! But that's not all, as they used to say on the Ginsu Knife and Ronco Pocket Fisherman ads on TV. I'm introducing a new “thing” on the show this week. San Francisco-based comedian Dan St. Paul, a friend of the show whose work we featured back in Episode 211, started a blog a while back during the pandemic lockdown called Slices. He writes up these funny essays and thought pieces about the absurdities of life. I've been suggesting he think about recording them and get them out there somehow and then it hit me: “Hey!  I have a soundcast! A comedy soundcast! Dan could play them on our show!” So Dan cut his first one this week and we added in some music and some sound effects along the way. It's called, “The No Tube Alternative”, the first entry into the audio realm from Dan. St. Paul's Slices blog. You can read that one, and more than three dozen more at https://danstpaul.substack.com/. You can also follow him @DanStPaul on Twitter. Let me know what you thought – drop a note to m-a-r-c@SuccotashShow.com or hit me up @SuccotashShow on Twitter or Instagram. I think we're going to work up another one by the next time I'm back with Epi 297. And – this is confidential so don't spread it around – but Dan is in talks with Succotash Patch Productions to possibly release his own soundcast based on his Slices essays. CLIPS Comedy Gold MinesI don't think it's my imagination that Kevin Hart seems to be everywhere these days. He's got a series on Netflix called True Story, he's developing a hip-hop animated project for HBO Max, he was even in a Super Bowl commercial. His soundcast, Comedy Gold Minds, has been going for a while now, where he deep dives into the brains of well-known comics to find out what makes them tick. I clipped his chat with David Spade from a few weeks back, from a part of the convo where they get into what getting started on the standup stage was like. Let's Make A Sci-FiFans and friends of Succotash know that I am a nut for any soundcasts that come out of the funny factory that is Kelly&Kelly Productions. This Sounds Serious, Dexter Guff is Smarter Than You, and just scads of other crazy satirical stuff they pump out is all comedy gold. (Flip back to Succotash Epi221 for my chat with Pat Kelly and Peter Oldring, two of the main brains behind those shows, to learn more about how the humor sausage is made…) Now they are presenting Let's Make a Sci-Fi, and this is a show that's different than a lot of their mocku-style products. It's the 8-part adventure of three comedy writers - Ryan Beil, Maddy Kelly, and Mark Chavez – and their earnest attempt to write a pilot episode for a serious science fiction TV or streaming series. Here's a snippet from their first episode, where the three writers are spitballing ideas for what the core of the show might be about. HypochondriactorActor Sean Hayes, who you know from TV's Will & Grace, and from soundcasting's Smartless, is a bit of a hypochondriac and has parleyed his groundless fears and obsession with maladies into a soundcast that he co-hosts with Dr. Priyanka Wali, a legit doctor and comedian, to delve into the sick side of life. In what has to be considered a pretty good “get” for a soundcast guest, Sean pulls in pal Robert Downey, Jr. for last week's episode. They talk about a lot of stuff in just under an hour: Downey's penchant for Wing Chun Kung Fu, his thoughts on Iron Man's final words in Avengers: End Game, and his “Cat Scratch Fever”. You'll have to grab the download for a couple of those topics, but our clip does start to get into the whole Kung Fu thing. The Extramundane with Max WardIf you like creepy, cryptid-based, spooky soundcasts…you'll have to look further than The Extramundane with Max Ward. Why? Because it's a spoof of those kinds of shows. A bit in the vein of My Neighbors Are Dead, this show rips the veil away from the supernatural to reveal, well, like the title says, the extramundane. Host Max Ward is voiced by Dan Kozuh, a writer of fictional non-fiction for places like McSweeney's, The Hard Times, Infinite Worlds, and others. Our clip comes from Episode 6 – The Woman Who Raised Bigfoot, where Max tracks down and interviews, uh, the woman, L. Melacetti (Nicole Kemper), who raised Bigfoot. Or A bigfoot, who was left on her porch as a baby in 1964. Well, friend, there it is, then. Episode 295 is stocked, cocked and locked. I don't know if that's actually a thing. I DO know that my cohort in soundcasts, Tyson Saner, will be right here in this very feed next week host episode 296. So close to Epi300 that we can TASTE it! And next month is this show's ELEVENTH ANNIVERSARY in soundcasting. Some folks said it couldn't be done. A lot more folks said, “What's the show called again?”, followed immediately by, “How the hell do you spell Succotash?” Just remember S-U-C-C-O, the “sucko” part, and you'll be able to Google the crap out of us. Thanks once again to Dan St. Paul for letting us try out one of the Slices from his blog. We're hoping to try out another one next time I'm here, in Episode 297. Until you deign to hit us up again, won't you please keep yourself and those around you as healthy as you can, brush after every meal, be nice to each other and the next time you're buzzed by a low-flying cropduster and the pilot yells down to you, “Have you heard anything good lately?”, won't you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon

If it hasn't happened to you, it probably will in the future, so here's a handful of principles I learned: 1) Lead softly. Stop reminding your team that you're in charge, or try to prove how smart you are. You don't need to defend yourself. You're the leader, period. Remember if you have to constantly remind the team that you're the leader, then you're really not the leader.   2) Acknowledge their strengths. Nothing wins a team over like knowing you value their expertise and appreciate them being there. Don't hoard praise. Let them know you're glad each one is on the team and you're depending on them.   3) Allow them freedom. If they're smarter than you, then they don't need to be micromanaged. These aren't interns here so don't treat them like it.   4) Don't let them see you sweat. If you're the leader, then your team needs to know you have a plan. Once they start sensing you're over your head, it will be like sharks to blood – not necessarily because they're bad people – but when a leadership vacuum happens, someone will step in to take over.   5) Respect them and ask for their opinion and feedback. Create a big tent. You may feel like that could open the door to someone nudging you out, but exactly the opposite happens. They feel much more positive about contributing, and will respect you for opening that door.   6) Finally, leverage their strengths. Most of us know the frustration working with a team that's under par, so be sure and maximize the moment when you have a great team. Worry less about how little you may know and enjoy the benefits of leveraging their brilliance.   Steve Jobs famously said, “It doesn't make sense to hire smart people and tell them what to do; we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do.” That's great advice. Now go out there in confidence and lead talented people to accomplish great things!   Read more here: https://www.philcooke.com/how-to-lead-when-your-team-is-smarter-than-you/

We're approaching the end of the year and getting focused on our goals and what we want to do in 2020, so I'm replaying the interviews that I think have had the most impact.  This episode is with Jordan Harbinger, master interviewer and human dynamics guru. Jordan spent 11 years building his former podcast and business, The Art of Charm. Then his business partners fired him and his team.  Jordan says getting fired from The Art of Charm was the best thing that ever happened to him. It forced him to reevaluate his priorities and showed him the real assets of a business. He lost the email list, website and all the web traffic, but his business partners couldn't take Jordan's personal brand or the relationships he had built with his fans, his team and the people in his network. Jordan's team joined him to create a new podcast, The Jordan Harbinger Show. Many of them even worked for free or half-pay to get it up and running and The Jordan Harbinger Show is now an incredibly successful podcast. In This Conversation We Cover:  [1:15] Jordan's youth + how wiretapping played a huge roll  [9:21] What The Art of Charm is + how it began  [12:10] What leaving The Art of Charm taught Jordan [24:26] What makes a good podcaster [27:49] The change over the years for Jordan's mindset towards podcasting  [32:19] How growth happened for The Jordan Harbinger Show [34:26] Podcast routines that keep Jordan functioning at a high level [36:44] Finding rapport with guests that just aren't clicking  [39:10] Podcasts that have impacted Jordan [41:31] In-person vs. behind the mic [44:30] Play Hard with Jordan Harbinger [49:55] Rapid Fire To learn more, and for the complete show notes, visit: workhardplayhardpodcast.com Work Hard Play Hard is a production of Crate Media

On this episode of the show, I am delighted to have two guests join me. First up is thought leader and podcast host Dexter Guff, host of Dexter Guff is Smarter Than You (And You Can Be Too), and following his appearance I speak with his alter ego, comedic performer Peter Oldring. While Dexter and I discuss a lot of the usual lifehackery stuff, Peter and I dive deeper into what makes Dexter tick. We talk about how he and his colleagues Pat Kelly and Chris Kelly (no relation) came up with the idea of doing Dexter's reaction the show has received so far, how the show is crafted every week, and where the show is headed. This is a different kind of episode - and a little longer than usual - but it's a fun one. Okay, the character is entirely satirical. But we take it very seriously, so I'll take the introduction just as seriously. But remember- it's not serious. Dexter Guff is a comedy character teaching business. So don't follow his advice. Unless you want to... Today on the podcast is Dexter Guff. Dexter is a visionary thought leader, author, and speaker about entrepreneurship and building a successful lifestyle. He also recently launched his own podcast in an effort to be a mentor to more people than ever before. We talk about building a personal brand, business ideas the Dex has- like a horse friendly space in NYC, or a downhill race track- and the importance of not listening to what other people think. This episode is sponsored by Pourt in NYC.
