In this episode of the Moral Imagination Podcast I speak with Catherine Pakaluk about her book Hannah's Children: The Women Quietly Defying the Birth DearthOver the last 200 years, we have seen a decline in birth rates in the United States and abroad, especially in Western countries. Most European countries are no longer at replacement rates and face serious population decline. Reuters reported that Japan's population will decline by a staggering 30% in the next fifty years. In the United States, in the year 1800, the typical woman would have about 7 or 8 children. By 1900 that number was cut in half to 4. By 2000 the number cut in half again to about 2 children, which is just about replacement rate. The Wall Street Journal recently reported on the the record-low birthrate in the US, and how increasing numbers of people plan to have no children. In the midst of declining marriages, childlessness, and low birthrates, Pakaluk studied the increasing minority of women in the Western world who have chosen to have five or more children — the top 5% of childbearing. Her book is a mix of ethnography, sociology, and economics, and includes a critique of the dominant model of social and economic research. One thing that stands out with many of the women she interviews is how at some point a shift took place in their attitude — from seeing children as a choice, like a consumer good among other choices, to a different attitude of receptivity and openness to having another child, and then another. She talks about the many forces that promote small families — the cost of children, overpopulation propaganda, education, feminism, environmentalism, consumerism and more. But Pakaluk emphasizes that encouraging women to have more children cannot be addressed simply by implementing pro-family policies like some countries have tried to do. Good policy is not insignificant — for example in most US states parents who want to send their children to religious schools have to pay twice for school through tax and tuition. But she argues that the real problems go much deeper. They are religious, spiritual, and metaphysical: a vision of life that sees being as good, children as a blessing, and family as essential for a good life. Pakaluk compares having a large family to running a marathon—except longer, harder, and more fulfilling. Government family policy would be like giving everyone a pair of good running shoes for the marathon. That could help, but it won't get most people to run. There must be a deeper motivation, and this almost always comes from religious belief and the virtues of faith, hope, the goodness of being, and the value of generosity and sacrifice that come from it. Themes and Topics we discuss include: * Demographics and Population Decline * Family policies * Feminism * Education * Career vs Family and Children * Conflicting Desires* Difficulties and Advantages of a Large Family * The Role of Religious Schools* Community * Plausibility Structures* Consumerism * Individualism* Social Pressure * Religious Freedom * Fortitude, Patience * Boys and Girls Sports * Novak Djokovic and Kobe Bryant * Voting Patterns * Climate* Creation and the Goodness of Being * and more Biography Catherine Ruth Pakaluk (Ph.D, 2010) joined the faculty at the Busch School in the summer of 2016, and is the founder of the Social Research academic area, where she is an Associate Professor of Social Research and Economic Thought. Formerly, she was Assistant Professor and Chair of the Economics Department at Ave Maria University. Her primary areas of research include economics of education and religion, family studies and demography, Catholic social thought and political economy. Dr. Pakaluk is the 2015 recipient of the Acton Institute's Novak Award, a prize given for “significant contributions to the study of the relationship between religion and economic liberty.”Pakaluk did her doctoral work at Harvard University under Caroline Hoxby, David Cutler, and 2016 Nobel-laureate Oliver Hart. Her dissertation, “Essays in Applied Microeconomics”, examined the relationship between religious ‘fit' and educational outcomes, the role of parental effort in observed peer effects and school quality, and theoretical aspects of the contraceptive revolution as regards twentieth century demographic trends.   Beyond her formal training in economics, Dr. Pakaluk studied Catholic social thought under the mentorship of F. Russell Hittinger, and various aspects of Thomistic thought with Steven A. Long. She is a widely-admired writer and sought-after speaker on matters of culture, gender, social science, the vocation of women, and the work of Edith Stein. She lives in Maryland with her husband Michael Pakaluk and eight children.Resources Hannah's ChildrenFlight from Woman Neil Postman: Technopoly Joseph Ratzinger: Homilies on Genesis On the Jewish - Christian Idea of the Goodness of Being Get full access to The Moral Imagination - Michael Matheson Miller at www.themoralimagination.com/subscribe

JAMIE DIMON, one of Wall Street's biggest bankers, pulled no punches, saying in an interview that "serious" headwinds are likely to propel the US and global economies into a recession within the next six to nine months. “These are very, very serious things which I think are likely to push the US and the world — I mean, Europe is already in recession — and they're likely to put the US in some kind of recession six to nine months from now,” Dimon said in the interview Monday with CNBC. Dimon cited a number of indicators including inflation, rising interest rates and the war in Ukraine, that led to his outlook. The CONVERSATION picks up on Dimon's widely reported view with DICK BOVE taken aback. BOVE, Chief Financial Strategist at Odeon Capital Group, said the comments by DIMON, CEO of JP Morgan were, "very damaging to the market." The CONVERSATION elsewhere examines the labor markets with BOVE's forecast for the unemployment rate as the US seems likely to enter recession. JOHN AIDAN BYRNE notes the sharp decline in the numbers of workers entering the labor force today compared with earlier generations as context for today's labor environment and the rise in robotics. Worst investment everTen years ago, Vitaliy invested in Electronic Arts (EA), a gaming company. At the time, the company had been named by Consumerist magazine as the worst company ever. The company spent 500 million dollars on a Star Wars game that flopped. When Vitaliy was buying the stock, a couple of things were happening. People were transitioning from purchasing games at the store to downloading games. Smartphones were becoming a significant market for video games. With this in mind, Vitaliy figured the gaming market was about to become much more extensive; therefore, EA's profitability would skyrocket. So he bought the stock at $16 despite the negative valuation. The following year the stock went to $10. Vitaliy was frustrated. Then over the next year, the stock went up to $26. He was over the moon. He had just doubled his money. Vitaliy decided to sell because he was just so exhausted from owning the stock. This is a decision that he regrets. Today, the stock is at $120. Lessons learnedWhen investing, you have to be willing to endure short-term pain for long-term gain. Go in with your eyes open. Don't shrink your investment time horizon. Precondition yourself through the negative realization that stocks can decline 30-50% so that it doesn't hurt as much when it happens. Don't stop doing research. And so for the first year, I thought 'Ok, I want to play a lot of tennis golf and travel the world.' So, that's what I did. I went to 20 countries. [I] saw nine Gothic churches. But after about the fifth church, they all started looking the same. And after about eight months, I started getting really bored of this early retirement lifestyle. So in my mind I stopped saying I'm an early retiree. I just said I'm a writer, because I wanted to spend time writing on Financial Samurai which was, and still is, my passion hobby, the thing that I love to do every single day. Now if you think about it, before in the olden days, when we had to go to the office for work, maybe let's say we're there for 9 hours. We would spend maybe three or four hours doing, at least for me, deep work and then three or four hours of so-so work, and then one to two hours of  lunch - and then just water cooler and chitchat. And so, I felt that if I could do deep work before my family woke up it would provide me enough meaning and purpose. And then after that, I could spend time playing tennis,

From codependency to a more interconnected way to relate to reality

The Energy ReMastered app addresses the wholeness of the aspects of our being: the body, the mind, the spiritual, the psychology, the emotions, our false emotions, false memories for example implanted and forced by the new cage, mirrored images we have kept inside of us about ourselves or this reality and many hidden aspects of the needed shadow work we need to keep on doing. The app is working with benevolent types of quantum AI and balancing frequencies may be sent as a new proposition to the field. Working with the app is a very good way of keeping on getting sharper about reading frequency signatures. The Energy ReMastered app assists users and practicioners in diving deeper into their psychic gifts, their relationships, the groups that are playing a role in our existence here, negative core beliefs, supplements that the body is calling at this precise moment. Sometimes, working with frequencies is enough but if our frequency is too low, we would need to connect with the physical remedy. Consumerist programming is being pushed ("more is better") yet in the case of receiving frequencies it is not always true. Anything a user needs can be programmed in panels. In terms of panel writing, every word has a frequency. How the panels are written are based on the intention and energy of the user programming these panels. One of the most brilliant and useful tools of the App, offering many additional resources, is the aura reading. The aura is a useful tool to trace the progresses, before, during and after and see how the body has answered to the remote work and the signatures that have been sent. It is really about building a relationship with the App, which is a connector you can use to transcend space and time. It goes way beyond simplified applications such as the Healy. Kimberly shares: "the Energy ReMastered app is a fairly sophisticated medical device that goes on such a deep subtle and physical level. It is profound in the principles of non locality and may be used in a very deep metaphysical way". The app assists us in identifying, for example, if you have purchased or written such types of panels, what kind of programming may be active in my field right now? It may be worked with as a psychic tool for emancipation as it is reading frequencies. The application are numerous: are you trying to sell a boat or a house, to rent a room, to choose a roomate, to know more about your partner, are you on your way to adopt a pet, would you like to choose a spirited pet, do you want to test what you are ingesting, to decide how close and how distant you want to be to your entourage and so on. Reading frequency signatures gets more complex as there are countless of echoes and imprints of beings which are empty right now or puppeted. Everything leaves a trace. In this realm, most of what we see on the surface is not what we get. Are you an original spirit? Are you shattered? Reals tend not to believe in their abilities and tend to struggle with self love. We end up discussing some of the services Kimberly proposes on her website. What's a full scan about ? And a MILAB scan? Are you being used as a breeder? Are you in the 20 and back program? Where you place in a handler families through Project Surrogate? A lot of the information provided explains a lot of our mental health struggles. What is my spirit asking for ? We then need time to process and integrate the information. Join Kimberly: https://www.secrettoeverything.com/ https://www.youtube.com/c/KimberlyMcG... The bulldozers are here. This time, they are here for Jebel Ali – the region's first major shipping hub and dry dock located in Dubai. Like many other built relics in the Gulf, including the coral stone homes of Dubai's rulers along its famous saltwater creek, these buildings were razed to make way for more modern structures. This is the story of the meteoric rise of Gulf cities – most of them were once sleepy pearling towns but they now embrace soaring skyscrapers and megamalls. Beyond the superlatives (the “tallest”, the “biggest”, the “most expensive” etc.), sociocultural anthropologist Sulayman Khalaf writes that Gulf architecture is not created in isolation. Rather, constituents of urbanisation, Arab/Muslim identity and the oil political economy all form a dynamic interplay in city planning. How then can we describe Gulf architecture? Consumerist? Modernist? Where does the notion of heritage fit in? Does the import of Western technical knowledge erase local khaleeji urbanism? MEI (NUS) has had the pleasure to host the co-editors of the volume, Urban Modernity in the Contemporary Gulf, to examine the Gulf's engagement with architectural modernism over the decades. This discussion also aims to address the nature of the relationship between the built environment and Gulf societies. The capitalist system forces those living within it to absorb thousands of advertisements every day and it has a serious impact on how we view the world and ourselves. Lee Camp takes on the tireless parade of garbage that you might know better as consumerism. Marketing executives do their best to make the world safe for corporate, militarist, and fossil fuel interests. And they do it by lying to us about how things work, what the psychopaths in power have really done in history, and convincing us that toxic products are fine for us. Fortunately there are ways of fighting back. Camp also looks into the real reasons that the US is focusing a regime change operation on Belarus. Naomi Karavani reports on the telecoms industry's latest efforts to collect and sell your data. This controversy was revealed in a government report. AT&T is helping advertisers by using our data to put users into categories that marketers can use to grab our attention. Anders Lee finishes off the show with a report on the threatened labor strike in the entertainment industry. Members of the IATSE Union were discussing a strike due to worsening working conditions. Their story received international coverage after Alec Baldwin accidentally shot a production crew member on a show he was producing.

Thanksgiving is one of the biggest holidays in the United States, forming a time honoured tradition where families come together over a turkey feast and give thanks for all the blessings they've received over the past year. The innocuous story told to generations of Americans is of the bold, pioneering settlers welcoming indigenous people to a celebratory feast to honour a successful harvest in Plymouth Colony,1621. However this conventional account which is propagated each year has been fabricated from sketchy historical details and a softening of context for the purpose of political expediency. In this episode we explore two main aspects of Thanksgiving; the traditional myth with its glaring inaccuracies and also the duplicity surrounding the modern version in relation to consumerism. We ask, should we be thankful each day or revisit gratitude on an annual basis? Are we marking the changing equinox or have we regressed to a dehumanized spectacle of modern materialism?

In this episode, Adam and Seth talk about preaching from the lectionary before exploring how a consumerist mentality influences how Christians and pastors view church and even their faith. As Seth describes it, consumerism asks the question, “What's in it for me?” When churchgoers have this mindset, they look for places with satisfying and exciting experiences and avoid churches like Fairview where opportunities to serve abound and rubbing elbows with messy people is guaranteed. And when Christians fail to choose a kingdom perspective over a consumerist one, they can make the mistakes of compartmentalizing their faith and putting themselves before others. Pastors aren't exempt from this mentality: the pressure to focus on numbers and attendance instead of discipleship is something Seth and other leaders have to fight against.Listen in to this episode to hear more about what a kingdom mindset looks like and learn why Seth preaches from the lectionary.  About Adam WhitescarverAdam is passionate about seeing God's people possess vibrant prayer lives to help them make a difference in the sphere of influence God has given them. Today, the idea of consumerism is perceived in two contrasting ways. One is the benevolent view of the consumer interests, consumer protection, and the power of the consumer. It emphasizes on consumers having information of the products available in the marketplace, giving them legal mechanisms to empower their participation in the marketplace etc. The other is of consumerism being selfish, shallow, destructive, and exploitative. It is characterized as the negative force that leads people to needlessly consume more and more goods at the cost of their own and the planet's health. In this episode of Zero Down, we delve into the world of consumerism and how it fits into today's culture.

On this most terrifying Halloween episode, we are joined by the Lit Crit Guy (@TheLitCritGuy) for a discussion of Gothic Marxism, zombie neoliberalism, horror movies, and more! What is Gothic Marxism and how is it useful for understanding the horrors of capitalism? How do the stories a society scares itself with reflect its material concerns? Consumerist zombies and aristocratic vampires; Elizabeth Bathory has nothing on Peter Thiel. The dialectical tension between Goth and punk. Can this backward-looking aesthetic ever be harnessed in service of proletarian liberation, or is Jamie being a reactionary hypocrite when she dresses like a witch and listens to Joy Division? The crew finishes things out with takes on the movies Mandy, Hereditary, and First Reformed (warning: contains spoilers). Happy Hallowe'en, you dirty commies!!!
