The past few weeks have been pretty tough around here! Yarn Crawl (not tough!); locked knee; covid; herniated disk and sciatica pain; summer vacation with lots of extra girls and babysitting! I hope to update again this summer, but no promises! Once the girls get back to school, I'll be making more episodes on the same schedule. Check out the photos and links to the things I'm working on at knitsewcraft.wordpress.com and on Instagram at @knitsewcraftpodcast.
Moira, Amanda, and Brooke went on the WNC Yarn Crawl this weekend! Join us as we talk about each of the LYSs we visited, what we bought, and how much we love fiber! Here are links to the stores we visited: Purl's Yarn Emporium Black Mountain Yarn Shop Friends and Fiberworks Sun Dragon Art and Fiber Plus, a special shout out to CGCG Yarns! We had a fantabulous time talking with Renee, who was having a trunk show at BMYS. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
This week has been a tough one! Lots of self-doubt, and a family sickness have knocked me down. I've been working on a shawl pattern called Wild At Heart Stripe, available for free on Ravelry. I'm using a yarn from A Whimsical Wood Yarn Co. and one from Yarn Experiments called Cohaire. This weekend is the WNC Yarn Crawl! I'm heading across western North Carolina with my fiber friends, Amanda and Moira. We will be recording after each stop, so it will feel like you get to come with us! If you are in the area, or are doing the Yarn Crawl also, let me know! I've been working on cleaning and decluttering my studio space, and it has been much improved! You can find photos of my progress on Instagram at @knitsewcraftpodcast. And most exciting! I published my first amigurumi pattern! I'd be ever so grateful if you would take a look at it, and favorite it! You can find it right HERE. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Today we talk about the two biggest fiber events in my area, the WNC Yarn Crawl in May, and SAFF in October. "The WNC Yarn Crawl is an opportunity to explore the WNC area's many unique local yarn stores and fiber locations. You create your own self-guided tour during the days of the yarn crawl. Visit as many locations as you like; all participating stores have daily prize giveaways as well as many great deals and specials for the weekend." The yarn crawl will be from Tuesday, May 3-Saturday, May 7. Mother's Day is Sunday the 8th, so be sure to buy something fibery for your mom, too! There is no fee to go on the yarn crawl, but please consider purchasing from the shops to help support their business. Each one offers sales through the crawl, and most (if not all) have giveaways each day. Some of the closest fiber stores near me: Purl's Yarn Emporium Sun Dragon Art & Fiber Friends and Fiberworks Black Mountain Yarn Shop My other favorite time of the year to buy yarn is during SAFF, the Southeastern Animal Fiber Fair. This year, SAFF will be from October 21-23. The cost is $5 per person/per day, or a 3 day pass is $10. From the SAFF website, "See spinning, knitting, weaving, felting, and much more! Join a workshop class to improve your skills, or just enjoy browsing and hipping the beautiful and unique apparel and wearables." There are a TON of vendors there, as well as classes, workshops, and competitions. This is honestly where I spend most of my fiber money, and 2021 was no different. There were a few new vendors this year, as well as the ones that I shop with each year. Whimzee Stitches Black Cat Fibers Brick House Fiber Arts Canon Hand Dyes Please consider purchasing yarn or books or notions from your local yarn store or ordering from independent dyers and authors and makers. We all love and appreciate the support, more than you know! I'm still looking for pattern testers! The pattern is free to testers, but will be a paid pattern after testing is complete. If you'd like to be a pattern tester, please email me at knittynerdy@gmail.com, or message me on Instagram! So my dear ones, make sure that you take a few minutes each day to take care of your SELF. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

So in this podcast we chat about our wonderful purchases, the yarn shops we visited, the coffee shops where we did some knitting, and other little adventures we experience. We can hardly believe that it's almost time for this year's Great London Yarn Crawl tickets to go on sale! On this episode: Great London Yarn Crawl 2018 Update We have fewer routes, only 10 this year, to make things a little easier organizing the GLYC alongside Yarnporium. Sadly, I Knit and Fringe won't be taking part this year but a new shop is opening that will be! Willow & Lark is also on board as our yarn sponsor and we've already had some pretty lush door prizes pour in from Blue Sky Fibers. Routes will be announced on or around June 15th and tickets will go on sale on July 1st as in past years. What We're Working On Allison has been a sewing and making fiend and has whipped up two Linden sweatshirts while also crocheting a French Market bag in linen. She's also started knitting Praline by Dani Sunshine and also whipped up a Lilly baby sweater on her knitting machine for a friend's new arrival. Rachel hasn't finished her Lilly baby sweater yet as focus has been on wrapping up her Marginalia sweater by Karie Westermann which is now off the needles, blocked and too hot to wear in this weather (of course!). Rach is also working on a new shawl design and searching for a travel project for a work trip to Amsterdam. Yarn Crawl Season It's summer! Which means less enthusiasm about wool and knitting as it becomes too hot, but our local yarn shops still need our support! Thankfully there are things like Yarn Shop Day, World Wide Knit in Public Day, as well as Yarn Crawls all over the world to help keep us heading to our Local Yarn Stores to be part of the action. We chat about different things we can do to keep showing our support for our LYSs. Wrap Up Many thanks for joining us for another episode! You can find the podcast on iTunes and Stitcher Radio (please rate, review and subscribe!) and you'll find us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, in our Yarn in the City group on Ravelry, or in person on Wednesday nights at our knit night between 7 and 10pm at The Breakfast Club on Battersea Rise. Rachel is still working on a series of accessory designs for The Fibre Co, in their lusciously chunky Tundra yarn (60% llama/30% merino/10% silk). But while on travels around the US visiting loads of yarn shops in the guise of checking out potential places to live, she fell down and got a kit for the Aranami Shawl by OlgaJazzy (Rav link) from Knit Knack in Arvada, CO, including some gorgeous Frabjous Fibers Wonderland Yarns. Celebration: We are celebrating our 20th Episode (yay!), the Indie Maker community in London and the UK (hooray!), and also got to talk to Sue Blacker of Blacker Yarns about their very special 10th Birthday Celebration yarn, Cornish Tin. This yarn is made from a blend of ten different fibres, and comes in a 4-ply or DK weight. Sadly, it is only available in very limited quantities - for those of you going on the Yarn Crawl on Saturday, both Nest and Knit with Attitude will have Cornish Tin available, in advance of it's official release on 18th September! Blacker Yarns very kindly provided us with a sample of the yarn to play with AND a full skein of the 4-ply in Wheal Rose Red to give away to one lucky listener! To enter, leave a comment on this post and tell us what pattern you'd knit with this yarn. We will pick a random post as a winner. Entries are open until 11:59 pm BST on 10th September, 2015. Happy New Year and welcome to 2015! NewsSadly, the lovely Mrs. Moon in St. Margarets has closed their brick and mortar doors, but are still around online, and with many exciting plans for the future. While we are disappointed that they will not be able to be a stop on next September's Great London Yarn Crawl, you'll still have a chance to see them. How is that possible you ask? Well, because the next GLYC will happen alongside theYARN IN THE CITY POP UP MARKETPLACE Mark your calendars now for 5 September 2015, and come join us at Chelsea Old Town Hall for a carefully curated selection of independent makers from around the UK. We can not begin to express how excited we are for this new addition to the Yarn Crawl, and we hope you will be able to join us. She is still working on the Skulls sweater for her brother, and has started the Munchkin Blanket by Amy Swenson for a friend's impending sproglet. Best of all, said blanket is being knit in stash yarn!Rachel has finished a new shawl design in cozy garter stitch handspun, and is working up a second version in Spirit Trail Fiberworks Sunna (75% merino/15% cashmere/10% silk, 150% scrumptious!). If anyone is interested in test knitting, there's a thread in her Ravelry group here. She has also started a vest for her MIL from Ecuadoran wool of unknown provenance, and has almost finished spinning the Orange Merino-Silk that will not end (otherwise known as Allison's 2013 Christmas present).Goals and plans for the new yearThe BIG Goal: KNITTING FROM STASH!!!!We both have what might be considered an ample amount of yarn on hand, so we're going to do our best to knit from stash. Allison is going to knit from stash as much as possible. To help in this venture, she's participating in the Pre-Process Knitters Stashdown 2015, and the LSG Cold Sheep 2015.Rachel is also Pre-Process Stashing Down/Cold Sheeping, but she has a number of goals (not resolutions!) for 2015, most of which seem to involve sweaters in one form or another:Organize the stash.Knit from said stash.Use up some of the three already-spun handspun sweaterlots in said stash.Spindle spin another sweaterlot (because she is certifiable). Publish some of the sweater designs that have been marinating in her skull for too long.Music Credits (all available on NoiseTrade)Loneliness & Alcohol - Jars of ClayEverything You've Done Wrong - SloanI Will Rise - Bearhart

Also, join the Podcaster Throwdown Ravelry Group. CozyCouch is awesome and has knitted 11 hats! In addition to the lovely prizes from last week, JoniLvsNeddy has donated some really cute project bags for prizes. Don’t forget to ship your hats to Purlescence Yarns, tagged for Team Knotty. Shipping information is here. Purlescence Address: Purlescence Yarns your name & the name of your team 564 South Murphy Ave Sunnyvale, CA 94086 Catching Up (4:52) Jen sang at two charity gigs and she enjoyed it. She's started a new book about the Rocky Flats nuclear plant called Full Body Burden. She and Ron have been watching cheesy horror films, because it's October, including Carnival of Souls. She took a drop spindling class at CogKnitive, and she loved it. Laura has returned from New Mexico, visiting her stepdaughter. She saw her stepdaughter in The Mystery of Edwin Drood. She also started watching Doctor Who and Downton Abbey. The registration for the Sunnydale Yarn club are closed and the names have been drawn. Her dad is doing much better; thanks to all of you for your concern. And her remodel is almost done! Melissa had to explain to her coworkers what a fiber retreat was. Also, they think yarn crawls involve a lot more booze than they do. Jen references this experiment. In the Knitting Bag (12:22) Jen has been working on her Bed Socks in Lemon Pattern with Fancy Knit Stripe from Knitting Vintage Socks by Nancy Bush for Ron and the Socktober KAL/CAL out of Koigu in a very multi-colored colorway. Jen mentions Foxy Knits. She's also working on her 30 Day Sweater out of Dizzy Blonde Superwash DK in the color Anna. She spent a lot of time working on cable charting. She also worked on her Rocky Coast Cardigan out of Fibre Company Organik in Highlands. Laura has been working on her second pair of Tree of Life Fingerless Gloves by Jenny Williams out of Knitpicks Wool of the Andes in the Thistle Colorway. She’s also still working on her Udones (Roman socks0 in Knitpicks Palette in the color Clover. We talk a bit about Naalbinding and the History Channel show Vikings. Laura has also been working on her Sassitis (Clapotis) and her Gridiron Scarf (Lattice Wingspan), which are both very close to done. Melissa knit a huge Mountain Ash Shawl and it killed her will to knit shawls, so she is working on Leah's Lovely Cardigan (her first sweater) from More Last-Minute Knitted Gifts out of Malabrigo Sock in Archangel. She is also working on a lot of hats for Hatoween (with some help from Jen). Finished Objects Big Damn Heroes Two Butterfly Hats Laura finished one pair of Tree of Life Mittens in the Forest Heather color of Knitpicks Wool of the Andes, two Olivia's Butterfly Hats for Halos of Hope out of Knitpicks Brava, and she finished her Mother Bears (faces and all). But really, Barbara from 2 Knit Lit Chicks did the faces. Melissa has finished several Hatoween hats. On Deck: Laura is going to be test knitting a hat pattern for Steamlolita. She will be reworking a sock pattern to be rewritten for Lambie Toes Yarn for Socktober. We mention Four Weddings. Jen will be jumping into crochet, making a Basic Stitches Crochet Hat for the Throwdown. Also other throwdown hats. She will be making a little sweater for her nephew's first birthday out of Delicious Yarn from Stitch Cafe. Melissa will be making Throwdown hats with her leftover Hatoween yarn. She will also be making a very colorful striped cardigan. Knit Culture (30:10) We answer a question from MillieHanS. Any tricks, tips for knitting with two yarns - not necessarily together. Say one is a wool that can be blocked as for a lace edge but the ‘body’ of a rectangular shawl isn’t as stretchy. I can’t figure out a good way to determine repeats so they are the same width even tho I swatch. Swatch. A lot. Wash and block the swatches. Swatch them together. Or find two yarns that are more similar if you can, because that might be more easy. Also consider if you're picking up stitches, changing yarns, knitting on a border--they will all change how it behaves. A lifeline might be your best friend. Also don't be afraid to re-do things. Jen and Melissa bought some great yarn at CogKnitive retreat including Forbidden Woolery, Knitted Wit yarn, bags from RKs Mom and Slipped Stitch Studios. Melissa bought a lot of Dizzy Blonde Yarn. And a lot of her yarn was pink. Jen and Melissa both bought some Indigo Dragonfly yarn and they love her color names. There were some great metal shawl pins. Jen got some great Bee Mice Elf fiber for spinning and wants to get some Red Fish Dye Works fiber when she's a better spinner. Jamie of the Awesome Metalwork Pins in the Cogknitive Marketplace. We also mention Dye for Yarns and Ladybug Fiber. Geek Culture (46:26) We geek out over Doctor Who and Torchwood. Upcoming Events: (52:49) We are having a Knitalong in October! The Socktober Knitalong! Knit something (anything (hats)) out of sock yarn (fingering weight or any yarn that would make good socks) or knit socks out of any weight yarn between October 1st and October 31st. Post finished projects there for a chance to win a prize. Please do a separate entry for each project. Hiya Hiya has provided some prizes and Joni has given a project bag as a prize. We will be at the Southern California Handweaver’s Guild Annual Weaving and Fiber Festival (WEFF) at the Torrance Convention Center on Sunday November, 3rd. Parking is free, entry is seven dollars. Laura will be vending. You can drop off Halos Hats at her booth. We may be doing some knitalong action with Yarn on Tap there for the Throwdown; we will keep you posted. Come say hi. We are working on some knitalong events for the Throwdown. We will keep you updated. New milestone drawing at 500 members, so join our Ravelry group!
This episode is sponsored by Dizzy Blonde Studios. "For beautifully hand-dyed yarns and inspired knit design." Catching Up: (0:45) Laura lost her dog Sabre. She is trying to keep busy, but it's been really hard. Jen's Stitch and Beach Group had a yarn swap. She got some different novelty yarn to play with (it will probably become charity scarves for Interval House). She also got some pretty purple laceweight yarn. Laura mentions the Cogknitive Fiber Retreat yarn swap. We talk about how useful yarn swaps are, both to give yarns you may not use a good home with people who really love them and to get yarns that you aren't used to working with (different colors and fibers) to break out of your comfort zone. We both both bought things out of our comfort zones on the Yarn Crawl. In the Knitting Bag (5:45) Jen cast on the Mysterious Shawl Knit-a-long by Romi Hill out of A Verb for Keeping Warm Floating in the colors Au Lait and Transnational Fury. Laura is still working on her Clapotis (or, as she calls it, her Sassy-tis, because the yarn was dyed to match her cat, Sassy). Laura is also working on a beaded choker design and trying to chart it and make the directions make sense and make it the correct size. Progress was a little sidelined by Sabre's passing, but now the pattern is off to the test knitter. Jen also worked on an easy scarf out of Lion Brand Homespun while watching the new Star Trek movie. She named the scarf "Chekov put on a Red Shirt" because she thinks Chekov is adorable. Jen mentions her knitting guilds: the El Segundo Slipt Stitchers and the Chocolate Martini Lace Knitters Guild. We mention designers Marnie Maclean and Janine le Cras, who does the patterns for the Unique Sheep. We digress about Chekov and Sulu in the original series and the animated series of Star Trek. Frog Pond: (15:56) Jen has had to rip back some of the bind off in the center section of her Madroña shawl because it was too tight. (Jen has issues with tight bind-offs and crocheting too tightly). Laura recommends wine to relax. Jen is hoping that beer and a marathon of Vikings with her friend will do the trick. Laura tried to substitute yarn on the Nine Dwindling Cables Beret by Yarn Owl. But math was not her friend. She's going to rip and re-knit a modified version. On Deck: (19:35) Jen is going to do a lace shawl for Camp Loopy out of Fleece Artist Saldanha Two in Vermillion color. She hasn't yet picked a project. She thinks the red color is wrong for Rock Island, so she will probably knit a pattern by BooKnits or the Romi Hill pattern Fire Bird (which she mistakenly calls "Firebrand"). Laura is going to handpaint some yarn to match Sabre and work on a scarf and fingerless mitts for her husband. This is her dissertation for Nerd Wars. Book Review: (23:58) We review 50 Sunlowers to Knit, Crochet, and Felt by Kristin Nicholas. (Full disclosure: Laura won this book in a contest from Vogue Knitting). Movie Reviews: (31:53) We give spoiler-free reviews of both Iron Man 3 and Star Trek: Into Darkness. TV Talk: (39:05) Jen talks a bit about the season finale of Doctor Who and the companions (no spoilers!). We digress into less geeky shows. Laura talks about the season ends of Grey's Anatomy, Castle, and Scandal. (All spoiler-free). We also discuss How I Met Your Mother. And then we get into the Big Bang Theory and being a geek. Also, we wish Tim Curry (star of Clue, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Oscar) a speedy recovery! We also mention the films Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Singin' in the Rain. Events: (49:22) The Knotty Girls are hosting a World Wide Knit in Public Day Event at the Grand Californian Hotel and Spa on June 15, 2013 from 1 to 3pm. No entrance to the park is required, and parking at Downtown Disney is free for up to three hours (five with validation from a restaurant or the movie theatre in Downtown Disney). There will be SWAG! Bring: 1. Your Knitting (or whatever else you want to work on) 2. Money for snacks and/or drinks 3. Any FOs you want to show off 4. A scarf for Interval House. Details: The scarf can be any yarn, any weight and may be knit, crochet, or woven. (Great for stash-busting if you want to do stripes!). The only guideline is that it be at least 4” wide and 60” long. A more open work scarf is preferred (i.e. not a heavy dense fabric) as this is for women in Southern California, but really, that can just mean using really big needles. I tend to do mine either in garter stitch or a simple rib or broken rib on big needles. Please bring the scarf in a ziplock or some other bag (the bag does not have to seal) with a paper saying your name, the yarn the scarf is made of (if you know it, if you don’t that’s okay), and any care instructions. Also please provide contact info (email and/or phone number). The contact info is just for us to get in touch with you if you win the drawing; we will not sell, trade, lend, borrow, fold, spindle, or mutilate your contact info and it will not be provided to my guild or to Interval House, I promise you. Multiple scarves = multiple entries in the drawing! KnitDizzney will be Sunday, September 8th, 2013. More details to come, but we'd love to spend a day at the Disneyland park with you!
