The Old Dogs ramble about the useless stuff we buy, stop using, but never get rid of. We ask you what your word for pancakes is. We present another "I Saw it on the Boob Tube." We remember - well, not personally - a time when the Sears Catalogue sold dynamite. We learn that if you failed at Hula-Hooping, it may have been because of your shape. And we enumerate some of the useless things people have in their homes. they may sound familiar. The Old Dogs Conversation is with Steve Rosencranz, a savvy financier who made a bundle, then turned to improving the lives of city kids.
Hula-hooping is a popular and seemingly simple activity that many children can do. However, the physics behind what makes a good hula-hooper has only just been studied with the first to mathematical explanation of hula-hooping dynamics published this week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The research not only found what keeps a hula-hoop spinning against gravity but also reveal why some people find it easier than others - and body shape does matter! The researchers used robotic models with different 3D-printed body shapes including cylinders, cones, and hourglasses to replicate hula-hooping motions. Using high-speed video analysis, they found that while twirling a hoop was straightforward across body types, keeping it elevated against gravity required a specific body shape. Bodies with sloping hips to push the hoop upward and curvy waists to hold it in place were most effective. The research shows that while all body shapes are able to hula-hoop, those with an hourglass or pear-shaped body will find it easier than those with a straight or apple shaped figure. The researchers also looked at the best way to start hula-hooping and determined that the launch speed is crucial: if it's too slow, or combined with a gyrating motion that's too slow, the hoop simply falls off. While studying hula-hooping sounds like fun, the research also has practical implications to inspire innovations in energy harvesting from vibrations and improve robotic positioners used in industrial applications. Were you a dab hand at hula hooping in your youth, and do you reckon you'd still be king or queen of the playground if you were to revisit it in adulthood? Well, it turns out that the type of figure you have will play a key role in how well the plastic tube will circle around your body. Researchers at New York University concluded that a narrow waist and large hips are optimal for keeping a hoop spinning. To discuss, Seán is joined by Olivia Pomerenk, a PhD candidate at New York University and co-author of the analysis…

This week I answer 3 diastasis recti related questions; Is Hula Hooping really good for healing diastasis recti? I answer the question and talk you through how to make sure you can do your hula hoop class safely when you have diastasis recti/or at least a gap.Is it normal to have lower back ache the day after doing some diastasis exercises? It is not uncommon but it's also not quite right as it shows you you're pushing too hard, to the point that your exercise becomes counter productive. After not healing my diastasis recti properly after my last pregnancy, I now find myself pregnant again. Will my abs be completely ruined??In short, NO, not if you do the right things now. For the longer answer about why it is essential for you to start now, you'll have to listen :)"In the news this week" I talk a bit about this study that came out in April that shows a clear link between MODERATE levels of physical activity and a significantly lower risk of depression. It just highlights the importance of exercise again, even if you only do a minimal amount you will likely get a big impact from it.Remember to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for the competitions, wisdom and cute videos. In this episode, I invited Life Coach and Kink Educator Wesley Toma onto the podcast to discuss one night stands and drunk sex. Some of the topics discussed include how we learn lessons from one night stands, how casual hookups are normalizing sex, and the fear mongering surrounding casual sex. Subscribe today and join the conversation! Wesley was born into a fairly religious family and was taught that sex and sexuality are not things you do or talk about until you are married to the woman of your dreams. As he grew up, he slowly learned that everything about that statement was wrong. Wesley started unofficially life coaching people in his mid to late 20's. Through doing this, he learned he had a passion to help people better themselves and has tried to follow that goal since. He recently became a Master Certified Life Coach and is one of the host of the podcast “These Queer Stories” (season 1 coming soon). With Pam Mathis, Founder & Creator of Hula Fit Nation Did you know that the Hula Hoop we played with as a child is now one of the best new fitness devices? Although Hula Hoops have been around for more than 60 years, they only recently became popular as a fitness tool. Research shows using a Hula Hoop as an aerobic activity produces similar results to salsa or belly dancing. In fact, a recent Mayo Clinic study showed that a woman working out with a Hula Hoop can burn about 200 plus calories in 30 minutes. According to the study, when compared with other aerobic activities such as walking or ballroom dancing, the Hula Hoop participants showed a significant increase in abdominal muscle mass, compared to the walking group. In addition to burning calories, the Hula Hoop may also trim inches from your waistline and hips and strengthen your core. Best of all, working out with a Hula Hoop and trying to keep it spinning is just plain fun! Today, we're speaking with Pam Mathis. She is the Founder and creator of Hula Fit Nation, a Hula Hoop fitness instructional program that can be done outside or virtually. Pam is here to tell us how using a Hula Hoop can be a fun, energetic way to slim down and strengthen your core. What You'll Hear on This Episode: Is it hard to learn to do the Hula Hoop? What is Pam's background? What led Pam to start Hula Fit Nation? What does it cost to buy a Hula Hoop? What are the physical benefits of Hula Hooping? What are the mental and emotional benefits of using a Hula Hoop? What's the difference between a regular and a weighted Hula Hoop? How can someone take a Hula Fit Nation class? What should you wear when Hula Hooping? What are the different weights of Hula Hoops to use? How does Pam keep the workouts interesting? How can someone take Pam's classes virtually? Today's Takeaway: There's no better way to improve your physical, mental, and emotional health than through exercise and daily movement. The many health benefits associated with physical activity are well known. Regular exercise improves circulation and may even lower blood pressure and help regulate blood sugar. Studies also suggest that the release of endorphins can help relieve pain and boost pleasure. Strengthening our core is not only about trimming inches and looking better, building your abdominal muscles can improve posture and balance and minimize the risk of lower back injuries. A strong core can also aid breathing and digestion. Staying healthy and getting fit doesn't have to require an annual gym membership or costly exercise equipment. Using canned goods from your pantry can substitute for free weights and as we've heard today, an inexpensive Hula Hoop can be your secret weapon for getting fit. And while the weather's nice, it's also a great opportunity to get outdoors and join in the fun of a group class with others at Hula Fit Nation. Remember that every day is a gift and the gift we get from keeping physically active and exercising is a gift that will help us breathe better, improve our sleep, and lift our spirits. I'm Florine Mark and that's “Today's Takeaway.” Quotes: “It's the best $45-50 you will ever spend.” — Pam “Using a weighted hoop several times a week can help you burn calories, lose fat, and strengthen your core as well as improve your balance and flexibility.” — Pam “Using a weighted hoop is a healthy release of tension and feelings of anxiety by incorporating movement, breathing, and repetition” — Pam “Using a weighted Hula Hoop is a great stress reliever and it's fun fitness.” — Pam “The best way to Hula Hoop is with music.” — Pam “Research shows that by using a weighted Hula Hoop 30 minutes several times a week you can burn up to 210 calories or more.” — Pam “The lighter the hoop, the more energy it takes to keep that hoop up. The heavier the hoop, the easier it is to keep it up.” — Pam Brought to You By: Gardner White Furniture Mentioned in This Episode: Hula Fit Nation Website Hula Fit Nation on Instagram Hula Fit Nation on Facebook

With the summer well and truly over, Jack and Sean talk about the gigs and festivals they attended over the sunnier months of this year. From Green Day to Garth Brooks, to Jack doing his first ever stand-up set, they cover it all….or at least what they had the money to go and see anyway. Sean kicks off by telling Jack about the utter handling he and his comrade got into trying to get from Dublin City centre to Malahide. They move on to talking about the brilliant Wild Roots festival in Sligo. Jack talks to comedian Anna Clifford just after she came off stage, Conor Marcus on his first festival in Sligo, Jessica on Hula Hooping out in the elements and Alex from Red Eye Pariah. Sean tells Jack about people walking out of Tommy Tiernan and how he got on when he went to watch ‘The Wrestling' in Cardiff. The boys finally discuss the biggest thing to happen in Croke Park since Owen Mulligan put the ball in the back of the net to equalize against Dublin in the All-Ireland Semi Final way back in 2005. Benedict Cumberbatch is back and he must really have a thing for fatherless kids named Peter, as that seems to be at the core of his latest film, The Power of the Dog. Weighted hula hoops could be the next big fitness fad - if TikTok hits are anything to go by. For most, when thinking of hula hoops people remember lunch times playing on the grass at school, but thanks to social media platform TikTok, weighted hula hoops have become the latest viral trend among adults. People on the app do a 15 to 30-minute workout, just spinning the hoop round their core. Perhaps if you've been going in circles with your fitness goals, maybe it's time to give hula hooping a spin. Pixie from Golden Bay runs a hoop dance academy, and makes hula hoops for everything from performance to exercise in almost 100 different styles. Weighted hoops were not in her initial plan, but have taken off, she said. "It's definitely something that I've seen growing this past year. "When I started my business, I didn't have heavier hoops for sale, but it was something I was getting requests for. "I did a lot of research on it and yeah it is something that is definitely growing and it's really cool to see people are latching onto this and making it something they can use to exercise the core." Pixie said for beginners, a heavier hoop is easier, but you don't get the same work out. "The heavier weight actually makes it a lot easier to keep it up around your core, but you do have to push quite hard. "So, it's actually a bit of a misconception that the heavier the hoop the harder it is, it's actually harder the lighter the hoop." Fire performance hooper Kate Lodge isn't new to the trend, nor is exercise her main goal, but she had some tips on how to hoop your best. "The foundational hooping move, which most of you are familiar with because you probably did it as kids, your waist hooping. "It's not quite as easy as it looks... the movement wants to be coming from your core because that's where the hoop moving. "The number one mistake I see is aggressive knee or hip thrusting." "Put the hoop flat against your back and give it a push one direction and then the movement is just a gentle back and forth." She said it can take a bit of practise, but then there are plenty more tricks you can learn to look like a master hooper this Christmas.

In today's episode I go beyond the cognitive dissonance (inconsistent beliefs) of alcohol that keep your mind in the daily mental friction, to drink or not to drink.Beyond the habit of alcohol, the learned behavior, lives a deep need for self acceptance. If you turn it into a LOVE/LOVE relationship, it cancels it's self out.You give yourself permission to be WHOLE.To be authentically YOU.To change your mind. The resistance to change your mind about alcohol, is your resistance to accept that alcohol is not the solution. You can not find happiness outside of your self, anywhere. However, you can strive for wholeness, and that can create the sense of Fulfillment, and satisfaction.I am my WHOLE true self. This is a statement alcohol inhibits you from making and thus creating the love/hate relationship. What can happen to your beliefs and desires around alcohol when you strive for WHOLENESS vs. HAPPINESS?When you let the solution be beautiful? To find out more about the safe container of 1:1 alcohol coaching with Mary, schedule a call HERE. People drink for a lot of reasons. Most of them go unexamined. When you say alcohol makes me more...fill in the blank, you are denying your true self. How you are in this very moment. You are saying I am not enough. When you are stressed, the message is, I don't have your back. You are not giving yourself an opportunity to be who you are.To grow. To build inner resilience. The process of changing your relationship with alcohol, is also the process of becoming yourself. Accepting who you are in this moment and deciding what you would like to embody more of.First you must have your own heart. You must find a place to feel safe enough to explore the inner landscape of the emotional self.No one will do it for you.Find out why the specific language you use is so important when it comes to creating a new life for yourself, when alcohol is no longer at center stage. Then alcohol becomes a neutral, irrelevant part of your day to day life. You must offer yourself deep, motherly love and compassion to feel safe enough to explore the depths of being human.Sometimes the Mother is Fierce, sometime she is soft, but she is always here for us, unconditionally. You can be that for YOU. To find out more about the safe container of 1:1 coaching, schedule a call HERE. Today I interview, intuitive Eating Coach Tiffany Thoen. Not only does she have an inspiring journey of recovering from alcohol at a young age, but her take on,"breaking free", of the stigmas and rules around quitting drinking, outside of the 12 step model, and living an alcohol free life, are right in line with the message of my work. We speak to the rising of the divine feminine in our culture through the evolution of emotional intelligence for all beings. It is the invitation to become more fully who we are, that makes the need for alcohol, less. Currently, she takes this same approach in to her Intuitive Eating Coaching practice, helping people find freedom and joy in their relationship to food.
