Drs. Peter Gerhardt and Shanna Bahry join me to talk about a range of topics centering around supporting adults with ASD and related disabilities. They are the authors of the new book, Make it Meaningful: Creating Programs that Matter into Adulthood for Learners with Autism Spectrum and Related Disorders. In this conversation, we talk about how ABA services are skewed towards younger populations, how programming for younger learners might look different if practitioners knew more about the unique needs of adult service recipients, risk aversion and other barriers to promoting independence, their 'wishlist' of skills that they'd like to see all adults with disabilities learn, having difficult conversations with parents, and lots more. Of course we discuss their book, the resources their book provides, and how these resources relate to other functional skills curricula that are out there... such as Essential for Living. You're also going to want to stay tuned for the entire conversation, because we close with some fantastic advice for just about everyone in this field. Do you often find yourself feeling that the world is against you and it's preventing you from living the life you want? If so, this guide might be the push you require to redirect yourself toward a more peaceful, happier existence. Understanding what it means to be a victim can be the first step toward changing that, and drastically altering your life. Identifying lifestyle choices that prevent you from moving ahead in life can also help. Getting in touch with how you feel and why will clarify the reasons why your life is progressing the way it is. It will also help determine where you could be headed in the future. In particular, childhood experiences and past missteps can complicate your emotional life and trigger feelings of negativity and helplessness during your adult years. Those feelings can eat away at the very foundation of your sense of self, and incapacitate your ability to lead the life you want. How you react or respond to challenging situations also reveals a lot about the manner in which you live your life. Do you live it with responsibility and courage or disdain and self-doubt? According to the Wordbook Dictionary, a “victim” is described as someone who is “unfortunate” and who “suffers from adverse circumstances.” If you take the role of a victim in life, you may commonly assume that situations will have negative results. Consider the following points to determine if you might be living life as a victim: 1. Your thoughts are affected. A consistent pattern of negative thinking follows you everywhere you go. It's not unusual for you to think others have it out for you. 2. You ask yourself “why” a lot. Why does everything in my life have to be so challenging? Why can't everyone just leave me alone? Why do others constantly make demands on me? Why doesn't anyone understand me? 3. You lament. Rather than look for solutions and consider ways to change, you think, “Poor me! In this conversation with a productivity nerd, coach in Seth Godin's Akimbo community, and an entrepreneur at GoGoDone, Heather Chavin we talk about creating conditions to ship your work. We talk about how so many of us are obligers responding to the external rather than internal stimuli and why we need a powerful community to overcome that. We agree that it is important to mourn projects we say ‘no' to but still, it is the only way to do what matters as trying harder doesn't quite work. A West Auckland GP clinic fears burnout for staff after failing in its efforts to recruit a registered nurse for almost a year. One of the practice owners says it's failing to compete with Covid-19 vaccination centers, with one job advert promising to pay nurses up to $65 an hour. The Royal New Zealand College of GP's says there was already a shortage of nurses before the need for vaccinators. Katie Doyle has this report.
The COVID-19 Pandemic has led to the need for sheltering at home and practicing social distancing. We are physically separated from loved ones and our interactions with others have greatly reduced. These decreases in our social interactions are likely to lead to more loneliness. However, Americans were lonely before the pandemic. Shasta Nelson who wrote Friendships don't just happen identified 5 circles of connectedness: contact, common, confirmed, community, and committed friends. She distinguish these circles by the level of intimacy, frequency, and consistency of contact. Let's discuss loneliness and what we can do. Holt-Lunstad, J., Smith, T.
