Today, I am honored to connect with Dr. Corinne Menn, a board-certified OB-GYN and Menopause Society-certified practitioner. Dr. Menn is a 23-year breast cancer and premature menopause survivor and a BRCA carrier who draws on her personal experiences to assist other women in navigating their health challenges. In our discussion, we explore the ways the Women's Health Initiative has impacted Baby Boomers and how fear-based decision-making, particularly around breast cancer risks, has shaped women's health. We discuss the timing hypothesis for hormone replacement therapy, breast cancer risks, and misleading stats and look into empowerment and the differences and biases that shape the experiences of women in perimenopause and beyond. We examine why osteoporosis is a silent disease and how hormone replacement therapy can reduce fracture risk by 30–50%, and tackle the effects of poor metabolic health, the challenges of receiving a diabetes diagnosis, and how statin therapy can influence the course of menopause and beyond. Dr. Menn also shares her personal story of resilience and empowerment. This conversation with Dr. Corinne Menn is invaluable for all women- especially those with a history of breast cancer. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: How the Women's Health Initiative has caused fear-based decision-making among menopausal women Why SSRI medications are inadequate in managing menopausal symptoms How the fear of litigation has impacted clinical decision-making in modern medicine The cardio-protective benefits of HRT How HRT can help avoid the risk of breast cancer Why starting HRT early is essential for cardiovascular health How racial differences impact women in menopause How early bone density screening can help prevent rapid bone loss during menopause The metabolic changes that occur during menopause How the lack of menopause education led Dr. Menn to experience premature menopause due to her breast cancer treatments Bio: Corinne Menn, DO, FACOG, MSCP Dr. Corinne Menn is a board-certified OBGYN and Menopause Society Certified Practitioner. This week on the podcast, Dr Louise is joined by Dr Corinne Menn, a New York-based, board-certified OB-GYN and North American Menopause Society Certified Menopause Practitioner, with more than 20 years of experience caring for women. When she was 28, Corinne was diagnosed with breast cancer. Following her BRCA2+ diagnosis, she underwent multiple surgeries and chemotherapy then navigated pregnancy and menopause plus longer term survivorship issues. Corinne received support from the Young Survival Coalition, an organisation that advocates for women under 40 with breast cancer, and worked with her oncologists to manage her pregnancy, menopause and treatment options. She feels passionately that women who have or have had breast cancer receive individualised care and treatment for their cancer and menopause symptoms, and shares three tips to help with quality of life: Do not minimise your menopausal symptoms, your hot flushes, your night sweats, sleep etc. So whether you use hormonal therapy or non-hormonal medications, make sure you get help and can sleep so you function better and breaking the vicious cycle of spiralling menopausal symptoms. Please do not neglect vaginal sexual health. Again, if you can preserve a little bit of that, it can stop a negative cycle of suffering, of urinary tract infections and relationship and intimacy issues. Scheduling time to have a separate appointment with your oncologist and your GYN. Come prepared. Listen to Louise's podcast. Listen to Menopause in Cancer podcast and Instagram page. This is Real Talk, a new podcast series where we're going to break down the stigmas and feelings of embarrassment and talk openly and honestly about just how difficult breast cancer can be – from diagnosis, to treatment, to living with metastatic breast cancer, to life after treatment ends. Today's episode is part of a collaboration between Susan G. Komen and Young Survival Coalition on the ways breast cancer treatment affects a woman's connection with her body. Depending on the treatment she needs, a woman can struggle physically with the way she looks and feels sexually due to hormonal and emotional changes. These are shared experiences across ages and races. Today, I'm excited to welcome Dr. Kristin Rojas, Shanae Ollison and Kyneitres Good to talk about the intimate changes women experience from their breast cancer treatment and getting comfortable with a different version of themselves. Dr. Rojas is a breast surgical oncologist and a national leader in treating sexual dysfunction in women receiving cancer treatment. She even identifies herself on Instagram as a #sexaftercancer expert. I love that. We're honored to have you with us today. And welcome Kyneitres and Shanae. Shanae was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer last year at age 34. She became involved with Young Survival Coalition during her search for a supportive group of women who could relate to what she was going through. And Kyneitres, I know you've had trouble feeling feminine and sexy following your treatment and work hard at reconnecting with yourself. Dr. Rojas, I'm going to ask you to start this conversation around Getting Sexy Back by explaining some of the changes women experience during their treatment that causes sexual dysfunction and how they feel about being intimate.

One in eight women will have their ovaries removed before the natural age of menopause. Five percent of women naturally go through early menopause between the ages of 40 and 45, and 1 percent experience premature menopause before age 40. That's a lot of women. And a large percentage of these women are not getting the counseling they need to optimize their well-being and long-term health, says menopause management specialist Corinne Menn, MD. This week she's here to help as we dive into the unique challenges of surgical and early menopause and what women need to know. Dr. Menn is a board certified OB/GYN with expertise and a special interest in menopause management and female cancer survivorship health. She is a 20-year survivor of breast cancer and has a passion for using her medical expertise and personal experience to help women navigate these complex health issues. She is an active contributor and volunteer with the http://ysctourdepink.org (Young Survival Coalition), serves on their Council of Advisors, and moderates the Healthcare Provider-Survivor Support Group. Dr. Menn is also an active member of the North American Menopause Society and a Certified Menopause Practitioner. Medical menopause can be intense. If you're a cancer survivor, you may have multiple rounds with menopause. You may go through premature menopause or have menopause symptoms related to chemotherapy and/or other drug treatments and then go through it again either naturally or should you need surgery or other treatments later on. It can all be complicated, confusing, challenging, and scary. Being an active woman helps with symptom management, but there's more you can do to get through and manage your symptoms (as well as future risk) to live your fullest life. This week's guest Dr. Corinne Menn is an expert in all of that, having been diagnosed with breast cancer when she was just 28 and in the middle of her OB/GYN residency. We talk about how to manage medical and/or surgical menopause, as well as genetic testing for breast cancer; finding active, supportive communities like the Young Survival Coalition; managing menopause when you're at risk for breast cancer, and more. Now a 19 year survivor, Dr. Menn has dedicated her practice to gynecology only, with a focus on wellness and preventative care. This week you meet Sarah. She is an IBC cancer survivor. She is a wonder and sweet woman and a wealth of knowledge on this very rare type of breast cancer. She shares how she found her cancer and her bad ass survival journey! BAYS (Bay Area Young Survivors) - for anyone under the age of 45 who has faced or is facing breast cancer in the Bay Area: https://www.baysnet.org/ Finding this group in the beginning was a lifesaver, since it was during the pandemic there were not in person meetings or retreats, but I was able to join the slack group for support, and join the virtual meetups. IBC Network - Specifically regarding inflammatory breast cancer: https://www.theibcnetwork.org/ This was a great resource Sarah, the internet is scary, and the statistics she found for my type of cancer were terrifying, and found out later that it was outdated by 10 years, so a lot has changed. This website offered a source of hope, there are survivor stories, and patient resources, learning tools, etc. Young Survival Coalition: https://www.youngsurvival.org/ Another great resource for young individuals going through a cancer diagnosis, lots of great resources found here. A few other things that were so helpful: Received a free cap wig from the Verma Foundation, I love it and it came in so handy when battling cancer and going through chemo with two little ones: https://vermafoundation.org/ Reached out to Operation Ohana, and received beautiful books that are written for children to help them understand what I was going through, cancer, treatment, etc.: https://operationohana.org/ohana-reads Find Sarah: IG @sarah2reyes --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mycancerstorypodcast/support

While the prevalence of women’s breast cancer varies significantly by race/ethnicity, an earlier age-onset of breast cancer incidence, specifically among Asian and Asian American women, have warranted more research and public outreach for early screenings and mammograms, and education on the risk factors. In this episode, we follow the personal journey of one young cancer survivor and advocate, Jeannie Karkowski, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 30. In the face of stigmas and struggles with her bi-cultural identity, she discovered the power of her own voice, as well as a support network that has helped her to heal and contribute to the community. Living Beyond Breast Cancer: https://www.lbbc.org/ BIO: Jeannie Aejin Choi Karwowski was born in South Korea and moved to the US with her family as a teenager. She married the love of her life at the age of 28. She was later diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 30 as she was planning to have her first child. She endured many treatments (chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation) for nearly two years. Jeannie is now on long-term hormone therapies and looking forward to leading a healthy and happy life. Jeannie actively participates in support groups for breast cancer, such as Living Beyond Breast Cancer and Lay Breast Health Advisors of Dana Farber Cancer Institute (https://www.dana-farber.org/), to help promote young women’s health in her community. She recently completed the Project LEAD Breast Cancer Advocacy Training Program of the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) and participated as a rider for the first time in Tour de Pink East, hosted by the Young Survival Coalition. Nationally, she plans to continue participating in NBCC’s lobby day for breast cancer public policy advocacy and research panel reviews for the cure. In her spare time, she plays the piano and enjoys outdoor activities with her husband. With her degree in Biomedical engineering, Jeannie hopes to go back to school to find cures for breast cancer, serve cancer patients with love and compassion, and provide evidence-based guides and resources for patients and caregivers.
Universe, what's good?! In today's episode, I discuss the Young Survival Coalition's yearly summit. This year, women from around the world came together in Austin, Texas to feel a little less alone in this world, learning how to manage this beast known as breast cancer. It was nothing short of amazing! Tune in as I discuss my experiences, who I met, and a few takeaways from the weekend. While we planned on recording interviews on site, Joe arrived sicker than a dog, and spent the weekend cooped up in his room. Luckily, he's now feeling better. We will be having a giveaway for Toledo-area cancer survivors on our April 24th episode. Special shoutout to Shay Sharpe's Pink Wishes for the inspiration! Tune in for more details.
