Yesterday was World AIDS Day and many of the people I admire and follow on various social media platforms made beautiful and heartfelt posts in commemoration of this day and all the many souls that have been lost over the decades to this hideous disease. I want to weigh in today with my own tribute: to the exceptional American baritone John Reardon, who died of this disease in 1988 at the age of 58. This is an expanded version of a bonus episode I published more than four years ago which constituted a deep exploration of his recorded legacy, in both live or studio recordings, of musical, opera (especially contemporary works), and art song. You'll hear guest contributions from the two Judys, (Raskin and Blegen; sorry, no Garland today), as well as Jo Sullivan, Beverly Wolff, Anja Silja, Evelyn Lear, and James McCracken, conducted by Leonard Bernstein, Thomas Beecham, Sarah Caldwell, Erich Leinsdorf, Frederic Waldman, Lehman Engel, Jorge Mester, as well as that great stage director Bliss Hebert doing a guest turn tickling the ivories in two song cycles. If you listen extra closely, you may even hear a line or two from Beverly Sills, Robert Merrill, Cesare Siepi, and Jussi Björling! The episode also includes a birthday tribute to Maria Callas and, as a memorial to all who have succumbed to AIDS, “When Angels Cry,” a song by Janis Ian. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. It is hard to believe that it's already been 13 years since the death of Shirley Verrett on November 5, 2010. It has also already been four years since I did a pair of episodes on this extraordinary and beloved artist, and this anniversary gives me the perfect excuse to revisit the work of this mezzo-soprano turned soprano who more than any other singer in my experiences (even soon-to-be birthday girl Maria Callas) was capable of singing nearly anything. This type of singer is sometimes referred to as a soprano sfogato (or a falcon, after the 19th century French mezzo-cum-soprano Cornélie Falcon. Since Verrett, like Falcon, sang both mezzo and soprano, I instead coin the term falcon sfogatissima to describe her vocal magic. This episode is chock full of examples of Verrett's impassioned yet technically-grounded vocalism, from art songs by Brahms and Pasatieri to operatic roles by Handel, Gluck, Cherubini, Bellini, Puccini, and Verdi (including both soprano and mezzo roles in Aida and the Messa da Requiem and soprano roles in Ballo in Maschera, Macbeth, Don Carlo, and Otello). I close the episodes with Verrett's astonishing but limited forays into the German operatic repertoire. Her collaborators on this episode include conductors Seiji Ozawa, Claudio Abbado, Bernard Haitink, Zubin Mehta, Eve Queler, Georges Prêtre, Sarah Caldwell, and the late Kenneth Montgomery; and fellow operatic greats Sherrill Milnes, Luciano Pavarotti, James McCracken, Robert Massard (last week's featured artist), and her frenemy the late Grace Bumbry. In this episode we had the amazing opportunity to talk with Sarah Caldwell.Sarah is a psychotherapist with an online practice based out of Park City, Utah. Sarah helps motivated individuals find relief from anxiety, relationship issues and career stress through individual therapy. Sarah shares with us the importance of living into your values when making decisions, overcoming anxiety and stepping into courage. She talks about how easily we can be lead astray because we are community oriented humans. It is important for us to recognize and be present so that we can define what are values are in the moment and thus better understand what is driving us to do what we do and react how we react. It is important to understand the value that we are holding onto in different situations so that you can respond instead of react. Knowing your values makes it easier to not only  move into growth and courage, but these values keep you on track and driven to push through the discomfort.Sarah also mentions the benefit of starting small with growth or courageous steps. She says that it is also important to look back at your own life and see if there are similar moments from your past that can help you stay motivated as you re-witness your past successes. Having people to celebrate and support you is incredibly valuable too. Sarah shares that there is a really good power pose that can help with feeling more powerful and confident  (sometimes referred to as the superhero pose) where feet are hips width and arms are on the hips, standing tall and the chin is lifted. This pose tells your mind that you are ready for anything. It also lowers cortisol and gently raises testosterone in the body. Magic. We also talk about the fact that it takes courage to reach out for help and be vulnerable that space. This is a beautiful way to demonstrate self love. Dear ones, I present to you today the extraordinarily versatile bass-baritone and my fellow native Milwaukeean Donald Gramm (1927-1983), one of the central house singers at both the Metropolitan Opera and New York City Opera from the 1960s through his premature death at the age of 56. Gifted with an intrinsically beautiful voice, an impeccable technique and an expansive range, he also was a crackerjack musician whose repertoire easily encompassed musical styles from florid Baroque music through the thorniest contemporary idioms. He is probably best celebrated these days for his commitment to American art, and this episode features him singing songs by Ned Rorem, John Duke, Richard Cummings, Douglas Moore, and Paul Bowles, with a particular emphasis on texts by Walt Whitman. What is perhaps less well-remembered today is how versatile an opera singer he was, singing roles from Osmin to Scarpia, with a strong emphasis on both bel canto and buffo roles by Rossini and Donizetti. The episode also explores his collaborations with Igor Stravinsky, Glenn Gould, and, perhaps most significantly, Sarah Caldwell, another important musical figure from that era who is strongly deserving of reappraisal. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Sarah's love of sewing began when she was a young girl growing up in New Zealand. Her first creation? A bean bag frog. As she grew older, her passion for sewing grew and Sarah eventually studied fashion, design, and garment construction.  Her talent led her to BERNINA. She shares what it's like to work for a family-owned company, how everyone looks out for each other, and how she can go into any BERNINA store anywhere in the world and be welcomed like family. “It really is quite unique.”  (1:57-10:29)Sarah also talks about her biological family, and about growing up with a mother who struggled with mental health issues. She shares how sewing helped her deal with some of those issues, including the death of her mother. She's glad that more people are talking freely about mental health. For her, and for many others, sewing and social media are providing creative and emotional outlets and are helping to build a strong sense of community. She shares many fascinating stories about her travels and the people she's met along the way. One of her favorite experiences was going to the Kimono Museum in Japan and having them dress her as a geisha; she brings the experience to life in exquisite detail. (11:49 -19:43)Sarah learns new things everywhere she goes and believes that sharing her knowledge with young sewists and designers is her way of giving back to the community. One of the ways she does it is by being involved with cosplays (costumed role-playing venues), including Comic-Con events. She has several different costumes she loves to wear, with Princess Leia being her most recent. It's also one of her favorite creations. But cosplays aren't the only thing Sarah's created costumes for. She was part of the team that created costumes for Lord of the Rings when they were in New Zealand filming. As she shares the fascinating details of how it came about and the experience itself, she says that creating the quilt for Frodo's bed was a labor of love. “Anyone out there who's sewn with gold thread knows how challenging it is.” (20:14 -32:01)Everything Sarah Caldwell does is a labor of love, whether it's sewing, baking, doing Zumba or singing in her band.  At times, she combines her sewing and singing skills in her classes. The Opera Orchestra of New York. Woodhull ställde upp i presidentvalet 1872. Deras parti hette Equal Rights Party, men kallades också People's Party, the Cosmo-Political Party och the National Radical Reformers. Men Victoria Woodhull motarbetades starkt: Hon kallades Mrs Satan. Hon sattes i fängelse. Först i augusti 1920 fick kvinnor rösträtt i USA. Victoria for President! Victoria Bonds hemsida: http://www.victoriabond.com/ Mrs Presidents hemsida: http://www. Hon studerade bl a vid Manhattan School of Music. Alex Shapiros hemsida: http://www.alexshapiro.org/ Musiklista: Immersion: Surface, sats 2. Note in the Pocket (0:00:00) Do you remember when you were a kid and clothing style was more important than anything? For children that are homeless or living in poverty, style is not an option but a luxury they can't afford. What you have is what you'll wear. But not having appropriate clothes for school can do more than affect your perceived “coolness” –it can even affect your learning. Luckily, there are organizations working to make sure these children have clothes so they can have an equal chance at succeeding in school as their peers. Today we are joined by Sarah Caldwell, development director for the nonprofit Note in the Pocket, here with us to talk about how they are helping children in their community have proper clothes for school.   Zen Your Zoom Meetings (0:18:26) At one point, working from home seemed like a luxury that only a select handful of people could enjoy. Recently, advances in technology have made this luxury a reality for a large percentage of America's working population. However, negotiating a working from home arrangement often includes agreeing to work meetings via video streaming platforms. But for the introverted or camera-shy employee, this can be a nightmare scenario. Here to discuss with us how to lower the pressure and stress induced by video work meetings is professor and chair of the Counseling and Higher Education department at Northern Illinois University, Dr. Suzanne Degges-White.   Stargazing and Astronomy (0:34:29) From Galileo's improvements on the telescope to the moon landing, mankind has been reaching for the stars for millennia. Sailors have used the stars to navigate the seas while artists have turned to the night sky for inspiration. Today, we still look up from our homes in awe of the universe. But, many of us can only point out the big dipper while others can't see anything due to light pollution. So, what can we do to improve our stargazing experiences? Dr. Laura Danly joins us today with some tips on stargazing as well as some insights into the field of astronomy. Dr. Danly is the curator of the world-renowned Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, California. She conducted research with the Hubble Telescope at NASA for 10 years and has served on an advisory board to the White House.   Anti-Racism (0:52:42) The deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, among other Black Americans, have broken our hearts and sparked protests across the nation. And when things like this happen and social media is flooded with posts, everything can start to feel overwhelming. But overwhelmed doesn't have to equalinaction. So, what steps can we take to begin creating a brighter future for everyone? Here to share her thoughts with us is Beverly Tatum, author, clinical psychologist and expert on race relations.   Empowering People at Work (1:13:04) So many people are going through the most difficult time with work they've ever had right now. The market is looking pretty bleak and everyone is looking for solutions to improve their own lives. With everything going on around us, maybe you could be part of the solution. But how? Empower Work is an organization with the aim to help people struggling with work-related difficulties. Jaime-Alexis Fowler is the founder of this organization. We've invited her onto the show to help us learn more about what this organization does and how people can get involved with it.   Choosing the Right Sports for Your Kids (1:26:00) For many kids, sports are their world. They spend the afternoons practicing, they make friends on their teams, and they learn valuable life lessons through it all. But for those parents whose kids are not involved in sports, or whose kids are struggling with the sport they're in, how can they know how to best help their kids? How can they know which sport is best for their kids? Today, we've invited Lisa Cohn, award-winning writer on sports parenting and host of Ultimate Sports Parenting Radio, to help us know how to choose the right sports for our kids.

This episode focuses on opera producer Sarah Caldwell, a conductor, impresario and stage director from Arkansas. The book is called Challenges: A Memoir of My Life in Opera, and by Caldwell, with contributions by Rebecca Matlock. The book tells how Caldwell worked to make opera performances come alive in ways no one had tried before. She was known to add live animals and water features to performances. She also traveled to the country of the opera's origin to conduct research and gather the sights and sounds of the area to make her performances as true to life as possible for audiences. Along the way, she met dignitaries and even had a reporter from Time magazine tag along on one of these research excursions. In addition, the Library of Congress assisted her during research of ancient China. She even befriended Imelda Marcos along the way and was burned in effigy alongside her. So, yeah. If you haven't gathered already, Sarah Caldwell was a strong-willed, opinionated and interesting lady. We cover some things about her work and her life in this week's episode.
