"Curiosity is like building a muscle." Daring to Dabble shares the same concept.  Using Dabbling (or making small incremental changes to your life) is the easy entry point to learning, growth, engagement, creativity, brain health and life satisfaction. The book, Cracking the Curiosity Code by Dr. Diane Hamilton talks about this concept and its application in the work place.  Dr. Hamilton is an expert in emotional intelligence and behavioral science and works with companies to "unleash human potential."The beauty of curiosity is that it allows you to being wrong and fail so that you don't give up and instead become interested about how to make changes to improve.  If you don't take the time to look at what factors are stopping you, then you won't know how to move forward.  She believes that there are four inhibitors to curiosity – Fear, Assumptions, Technology and Environment.  Curiosity Index is located in the back of the book.Fear of what you may find out, hesitating to learn more because you don't want to look foolish. Assumptions, we assume that we know already and once we believe that we need to be seen as an expert we stop investigating new and different information in a particular topic.Technology provides us with limitless access to information and yet it can cause us to rely too heavily on it, stifling our creativity and possibly our personal experiences and interactions. Environment: how did upbringing and societal beliefs restrict us from wanting to be curious and on top of that we are so overwhelmed by life that we don't believe we have the headspace to keep learning.Elise also shares the value about being curious about the process of learning or changing as well. The process of creating something new or learning something new holds valuable information and learning components. So by being patient in the learning and doing we are truly gaining the most from what we do. About Dr. Diane HamiltonBehavioral Expert, Author, Speaker and ConsultantA sought-after expert in emotional intelligence and behavioral science with nearly four decades of real-world experience, Dr. Hamilton is the creator of the Curiosity Code Index® and the author of five books sold worldwide. What was done well in the past may not work that well today. We're seeing this pattern repeatedly; it's time for leaders to break the status quo and get curious again! Dr. Diane Hamilton is a nationally syndicated radio host, keynote speaker, and the former MBA Program Chair at the Forbes School of Business. She has authored multiple books required in universities around the world, including Cracking the Curiosity Code and The Power of Perception. Dr. Hamilton is the Curiosity Code Index® assessment creator, which is the first and only assessment that determines the factors that inhibit curiosity. In this episode, we will dive a bit deeper into her insights on curiosity and how it's integral to leadership. Jump right into the episode and crack the code of curiosity in leadership. On this episode: Dr. Hamilton talks about her background in sales and software and how it built the foundation for her to go into leadership.  How do you assess curiosity? Dr. Hamilton explains how she arrived at her model for assessing curiosity and taking it further by helping people build up a low curiosity.  Let's break down the 4 factors that inhibit curiosity - F.A.T.E. Leadership is a task that we thought we were prepared for, but the pandemic taught us we weren't. Find out Dr. Hamilton's thoughts on having foresight and proactivity in leadership.  Leaders need to raise the bar for themselves. Dr. Hamilton explains that one of the ways to do that is to get around people who are more intelligent than you. Find out more about how employees need and want growth. To keep the best, you have to be the best yourself. Dr. Hamilton reveals how perception plays a big part in making you a respected leader. Key Takeaways: Curiosity is like cake; you have to turn on the oven to bake the ingredients You need to build curiosity into your core values and emulate what you want to see F.A.T.E - fear, assumptions, technology, and environment  Leaders need to be proactive and have the foresight to get out of status quo thinking You can't be the smartest person in the room, or else you're not growing Curiosity needs to be rewarded in your team and yourself Tweetable Quotes: “[Curiosity] is a huge discussion about how to be innovative, how to engage all the ingredients of the cake that everybody's trying to fix and nobody knows that we're not turning on the oven.” - Dr. Diane Hamilton “We need to get out of status quo thinking… Just because we've done it right in the past and it worked great then, doesn't mean it's going to work well in the future.” - Dr. Diane Hamilton Resources Mentioned:  https://www.amazon.com/Cracking-Curiosity-Code-Unlocking-Potential-ebook/dp/B07MTTRD2H#:~:text=Diane%20Hamilton's%20well%2Dresearched%2C%20highly,from%20achieving%20their%20full%20potential.%22 (Cracking the Curiosity Code) https://www.amazon.com/Power-Perception-Eliminating-Boundaries-Successful/dp/1642379700 (The Power of Perception ) Connect with Dr. Hamilton on https://www.facebook.com/drdianehamilton (Facebook) and https://www.linkedin.com/in/drdianehamilton/ (LinkedIn). Dr. Diane Hamilton, nationally syndicated radio host, speaker, author, educator, and founder/CEO of Tonerra joins me this week to talk about the important subject of curiosity. Diane and I discuss whether we are born curious or if it’s something we can learn and develop, what the cost is when we aren’t curious, and ways we can get more curious! Diane also shares some great insight from her book, Cracking the Curiosity Code, explaining why some people are more curious than others, and what we can do about it.   What You Will Hear in This Episode:   ● Curiosity is something we may not take the time each day to sit down and directly think about, but it is a great part of success and many of today’s top learners and earners are highly curious. ● Diane’s radio show, Take the Lead, features interviews with top authors, speakers, thought leaders and more. She noticed that CEO’s and billionaires all seemed to be highly curious, and continue to feed their mind with high-level thoughts and ideas long after they become successful. ● The Curiosity Code Index and Cracking the Curiosity Code book explores not only what makes us curious, but also what holds us back from being even more curious and open to new ideas and concepts. Diane also explores practical steps we can begin to welcome more curiosity in our personal and professional life. ● With innovation and technology rapidly advancing in our culture, now is the perfect time to raise our curiosity, and understand how deep of an impact it has on our success. ● Diane names a few of the factors that influence our level of curiosity: FATE (fear, assumptions, technology, and environment). ● The first step is to recognize where you hold back from being more curious, and pinpoint where the problems impact you. Then, you can start small with achievable goals to become more curious. Even if it’s just a conversation a day, that is a big stride towards an overall shift. ● Companies and leaders can become curious about their staff and use the data to increase retention and happiness in the workplace. They can also use it to solve big problems that seemed previously unsolvable. ● Start by writing down things you fear and coming up with a SWOT analysis of how to overcome them. ● When you ask yourself, “what have I learned that’s new today?” it will most likely create an openness to become more curious.   Quotes: ● “To me, curiosity ties into status quo thinking, which I’m trying to get organizations away from.” ● “A lot of it is talking to people and explaining that you are developing your sense of curiosity.” ● “As you start questions and listen, you start to see things from other people’s perspective.” ● “The best way to learn something is to teach someone else.”     Mentioned: Dr. Diane Hamilton @drdianehamilton Take the Lead The Curiosity Code Cracking the Curiosity Code

Do you feel like your marketing team has become stagnant in their ideas? Is there something inhibiting the team from creativity and innovation? Perhaps it is because their curiosity is being stifled. An expert in emotional intelligence and behavior science, Creator of the Curiosity Code Index, Author, Speaker, and CEO of Tonerra, Dr. Diane Hamilton, explains the factors that keep people from being curious and how curiosity is the very spark that encourages creativity and motivation. This is a great episode to listen to and consider the curiosity level of your marketing team and what you can do to help foster and encourage that to keep growing. Check it out!   Takeaways: Curiosity is what comes before intrinsic motivation and drive. If people are less curious, your team can be kept from growing in their expertise. There are four factors that can inhibit your curiosity. They are fear, assumption, technology, and environment. The fear factor is people being afraid of not wanting to look stupid or stand out from the norm. In a marketing meeting, are people afraid to ask questions because they do not want to look unprepared?  The assumption factor is your inner voice, things that you tell yourself. For example, “Oh, I don't want to do that because I'm not good enough at it.” The technology factor is when certain things are made too easy for you to find out, so you may not question the reason behind that fact, or you do not know how to leverage certain technology to help you find out more about a particular subject. The environment factor is the external inputs such as your parents, teachers, siblings, friends, and location that you are in that could encourage or discourage curiosity. The Curiosity Code Index tells you the level of each inhibiting factor that you are dealing with, and then helps you to create a plan of where to start dealing with those curiosity stifling factors. Keep your mind open to different ways of doing things. People regret what they don't do as opposed to what they do, do. What can you do with your marketing team to help foster curiosity? How can you work on these factors to help drive creativity and innovation? Career Advice from Dr. Diane Hamilton - It's not so scary to try certain things. Don't wait to try something new, change is exciting. Everyone is born curious. So, what happens? Why do some people become less curious than others? For individuals, leaders, and companies to be successful, they must determine the things that hold curiosity hostage. Think of the most innovative companies and you will notice they employ people who do not accept the status quo, they aren't reluctant to change, they evolve with the times, they look for problems to solve, and focus on asking questions. Drawing on decades research and incorporating interviews from some of the top leaders of our time, Hamilton examines the factors that impact curiosity including fear, assumptions, technology, and environment (FATE).
