In this episode, you'll hear Glyn Fussell in conversation with Oasis Associate, practitioner, coach, writer and activist Gill Coombs as they discuss Deep Ecology. What is Deep Ecology? Gill suggests that as we have evolved, our rational minds have taken over, with a tendency to dominate over the natural world causing an imbalance of power. Deep Ecology is a way of recognising the harm we have done to our relationship with other living beings and to begin the process of healing it. We explore how the world of work has evolved and changed over time, along with Gill's thoughts on essential, wise principles by which individuals and organisations can work towards creating and nurturing a healthy world in their own authentic way. We also discuss how we can bring Deep Ecology into coaching. This could be as simple as bringing in external elements of nature to our coaching space, or going for a walk with someone outside rather than simply sitting facing. Both of these can add a vibrancy and healthy shift in the relationship between coach and coachee. Additional resources The book Gill highly recommends starting with is old(ish) but good: Spiritual Ecology, edited by Llewellyn Vaughn Lee. Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer is also excellent, and From What Is to What If, by Rob Hopkins, and The Nature of Business by Giles Hutchins. Also Manda Scott's podcast Accidental Gods is superb. And Gill's own book Hearing our Calling. Also Bill Plotkin's Wild Mind, as some listeners may well be interested in eco psychology, the people practitioners' facet of Deep Ecology.

Laura Storm (webpage) author of Regenerative Leadership with Giles Hutchins, speaker, entrepreneur, community builder, mother, creator. The list is long. We got together for a wonderful conversation about the what regeneration is, the next steps and moves in the regenerative community, joy, a ceremonial attitude to life, grief and what it means to really stop and be forced to surrender to life. What does it mean to accept that there is no recovery, no going back? This covers some of what I believe to be the most important topics of our time yet not through high flying theoretical concepts rather the life and contexts that takes up most of our time. To connect check out Regenerators and Regenerative Leadership. Enjoy. Host: Amit Paul
The word sustainability made it into the mainstream vocabulary in the 1970s around the time of the first Earth Day. It has been thrown around as to make the actions of businesses more appealing and has become an instrument for show without much data behind it to demonstrate its effectiveness. Sustainability is a term and practice that is designed to meet the needs of the current generation and has been adopted at the top levels of government - e.g. United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. Regeneration is the new paradigm, that when defined well and understood, it can be measured and transcend the test of time by living and learning to work in harmony with the very essence of life itself - nature. Giles states it simply. Regeneration is about working the way life works. By recognizing that we as busy consumers have fallen out of sync with life, and now it's important to allow ourselves to remember the inherent grammar that is innate within nature. The deeper response goes into three levels of insight that will help unlock our potential as leaders and to reimagine organizational consciousness. The power of regeneration and learning from living systems, broken into three interconnected levels. Understanding nature, nature's patterns, principles and processes, including disciplines such as biomimicry, circular economics and systems thinking that help us work with the principles and processes we find within life with an open mind. With an open heart, systemic participation within living systems; embody experience working with systemic dynamics within the organization as a living system and immersed within life. The third level is open will: Leading to an existential shift tuning into nature's wisdom, and knowing that there is actually much more to life than meets the eye. It is not only the biological understanding of life, but a bio-psycho-spiritual receptivity and opening into life, which allows us to work with the inherent wisdom, innate within life. In this powerful imperfectly perfect conversation, I spoke with the wonderful Christine Freeland who is the Founder of Boost Your Brilliance. Christine shares with MWe about Leadership in tune with life. She worked for the National Park Service in the United States for 30 years. The last 6 years of her career, she became interested in leadership, feeling there was something missing in the way work and workers were managed. Very top down, bureaucratic, and hierarchical, with a mostly transactional way of working. She had an aha moment taking an unusual leadership course which involved connecting with her personal and work passions. Something clicked, and she thought, this is the necessary ingredient, leadership with heart!! Helping to lift employees up in an organization and support their talents and passions to accomplish amazing and creative ways of working together. The two books Christine mentions at the end are: - Leadership and the New Science by Margaret Wheatley - Regenerative Leadership by Laura Storm and Giles Hutchins

Giles Hutchins shares his work and thinks about how to lead organizations following nature's flow rather than using nature as an external resource. Since the industrial revolution, we have been an extractive society, taking from the environment, without understanding or considering our interconnectivity and interdependence with the environment. We are now paying heavily for this way of thinking, and Giles works in organizations to change worldviews and create regenerative leadership. He calls for a shift from the machine mindset to a living-systems mindset; from a world that is made of separate parts, to a world that is interconnected and interdependent. If you want to be part of creating more humane and sustainable workplaces, this is an important podcast to listen to! By daring to dabble, Elise took a multiple year journey of trying new things without a plan, and ended up finding that all of her experiences lead her back to herself and emboldened her to step into her purpose. A handful of years ago, Elise asked to go part-time at her job to create space to explore and try new things, which ended up transforming her life. During this time she found the regenerative movement, and went on a personal deep dive to find her ‘true self' (I wasn't even sure what I meant at the time by true self - it was just that my life did not FULLY represent what was inside of me). In this episode, Elise shares: what is the regenerative movement, her participation in it, and how she only found the community effort by taking time to dabble. She had also been asking herself for years, “What does it mean to be a holistically sustainable or regenerative person?”. Well, during her part-time break from work where she dabbled without a plan, she ended up realizing that she was actually practicing several components of what it means to be a regenerative human. She took time to go inward, understand herself, feel the benefits of her emotions, discover the imbalance of yin-yang in her own body-mind, and much.Ways to begin to be a Regenerative Human:1) Shift your perspective - EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED - our world is not made up of things, but made up of processes - 2) Get out into nature3) You are not just a 'rational being'... you are also an animal with a primitive brain that determines what goes to your thinking brain to process 4) Rest, breathe, and reduce your stress levels, so you can be a more compassions and collaborative human being5) Get to yourself, your inner self6) Tap into your multiple guidance systems: rational, somatic, emotional and intuitiveProjects that Elise mentioned:Marin Carbon Project: A project that seeks to enhance carbon sequestration in rangeland, agricultural, and forest soils through applied research, demonstration and implementation in Marin County, California.Regen 1 Alliance: An accelerator project now transitioning to a non-profit. REGEN1 represents a coalition of farmers and ranchers, scientists and conservationists, supermarkets, restaurants, food service companies, designers, storytellers, and entrepreneurs who share a vision to restore our ecosystems and create a more equitable food system.
