By age 15 he was getting nutrition advice from all the mainstream “muscle magazines.” He was lifting weights for 2 hours per day and was addicted to caffeine and ephedrine pills. His unhealthy obsession with his physique haunted him into adulthood and consumed him throughout all of his early twenties. I can so related to that! 17 years later, he is here to help people avoid all of the horrible obstacles and pitfalls that he encountered on his personal journey. Justin is a Certified Nutritional Therapist, Specialist in Sports Nutrition, and Specialist in Fitness Nutrition. He studied nutrition and fitness and has helped over 2,500+ people transform their lives through one-on-one Lifestyle Coaching. Life's demands can leave little room for nurturing ourselves, but what if prioritizing personal well-being was the key to thriving in all areas of life? In this episode, Naeemah chats with Dina Smith, owner of Closet Therapy with Dina, and she shares practical tips for building sustainable self-care habits, overcoming the guilt of putting yourself first, and creating environments that support your mental and emotional health. After obtaining an undergraduate degree from Florida A&M University, Dina began her career in business excelling in consumer finance, sales, compliance, and corporate training. Obtaining a Master's in Community Counseling from Argosy University changed Dina's career trajectory and she began working in mental health. This focus added anger management, substance abuse counselor, and marriage and family therapist to her well-rounded list of titles. I used to believe when it came to exercise, more was always more.Especially for a multisport athlete who is running, backpacking, mountaineering and wanting to be ALWAYS READY TO ROLL at a moment's notice. Also, as I cruised toward 50, I felt like I needed to work harder just to maintain a certain level of performance. But this summer, I got tired of being exhausted.Tired of grinding through my day job.Tired of feeling irritated with every little thing. (Like I would knock over a can of Seltzer and fly into a rage.)Tired of starting each weekend adventure exhausted from the last weekend adventure.Tired of feeling spacey and not fully connected while coaching my clients. So I did a crazy thing.

She's definitely one of the best lifestyle-nutrition coaches we know because she created the coaching experience her clients need and deserve. Are you really meeting your clients where they are at, or are you expecting them to be comfortable with where YOU are? What would coaching look like if there were less emphasis on the scale versus how people are feeling? When is the last time you did an assessment on whether your coaching is the investment you would make for yourself? Its time to challenge yourself as a coach, dig deeper and even consider some psychology or mindset continuing education classes. ________________________ Guest: Hannah Williams: https://www.instagram.com/hannahj28/ Recommended Certifications: Girls Gone Strong Pre and PostNatal Cert: https://go.girlsgonestrong.com/cppc-special-offer2 Health Mindset Coaching Certification (HMCC): https://www.healthmindsetcert.com/ Free All About Macros Guide: https://www.themacrouniversity.com/all-about-macros

I recorded this episode on my youngest son's birthday, and I found myself thinking about the milestones of life and all of the small accomplishments that lay between those milestones. Life is a journey of emotions, pain, joy, and countless changes and lessons. And I have found that it's too easy to slip into recalling the shameful moments or the bad decisions. But if we can put some effort into embracing and celebrating all the wins along the way, we can build an even more amazing future. So why is it so hard to own the results you create and celebrate yourself and your accomplishments? Check out this episode to hear more about:
As I aired this episode, I was wrapping up my radiation treatment and it got me thinking about the significance of acknowledging our milestones and triumphs, big or small. But here's a thought: Why do we often link celebrations with foods or drinks that might not be in line with our health aspirations? I'll open up about my personal experiences and the internal debates I've had around the best way to celebrate. My revelation? The real celebration is in continuing the practices that got us to where we are. For me, that means cherishing the nutritious meals I prepare, sticking to my health regimen, and investing in my well-being. Celebrating is all about embracing what makes us feel alive and vibrant, and I want to encourage all of you to see caring for yourself from a fresh perspective. So, today's episode is about redefining rewards and acts of self-love. Listen now and learn to celebrate your successes while you care for yourself. If you've ever struggled with tossing and turning at night, you're probably familiar with the commonly used supplement, melatonin. Most of us know melatonin and the sleep hormone. It's what our bodies make when it's time to go to bed, right? Well, yes. But did you know that the amount of melatonin that your brain produces at night is only about 5% of what your body makes? So where does the other 95% come from, and what does your body use it for? In today's Tuesday Terrain Talk, you'll learn about the other 95% of melatonin production and its mind-blowing range of benefits for your health, from anti-inflammatory to anti-cancer. Even better, I'll tell you an easy and enjoyable way to support your body in making more melatonin on its own. Listen now and you may be doing a lot more for yourself than just sleeping more soundly. I'm a firm believer that a healthy body starts with healthy nutrition, which means eating quality food. When it comes to plants, that quality starts with the quality and the nutrients in the soil they grow in. Not all cauliflower is created equally. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Matt after long overdue multiple mutual connections trying to connect us. I met Matts mom beforehand at a dance competition for charity and she had mentioned we would get along and then came to find out my wife Chelsea had grown up with Matt so everything aligned and we made it happen. My first impression after meeting Matt was positive because his energy in contagious. He has a strong and vibrant personality that shines through as he walks into the room. Matt found success early on in his life in the business world and found himself in a position to create his own business. His business centered around helping others tap into their own potential, find their "spikey" point of view combined with his own knowledge of neuroscience and personal journey through pain and sacrifice. His personal journey of overcoming challenge goes all the way back to young adulthood. He experienced an embarrassing and life changing moment in grade school that I believe most people will connect with. Matt encourages people to stand up for what they believe in and seeking out the silver lining in every situation no matter how challenging. Lifestyle Medicine. Sure – that makes perfect sense. Our lifestyles are central – critical! – to a healthy life. And yet, as strange as it may sound, the concept of Lifestyle Medicine first came to the forefront in 1989, adding behavioural, motivational and environmental skills to conventional medical practices. Today we have the unique opportunity to tap into the insights of one of the pioneers in Lifestyle Medicine, Harvard Medical School's Dr. Beth Frates. In addition to being a pioneer in Lifestyle Medicine education, she is also an award-winning instructor at Harvard Medical School. And she also continues working 1:1 with individual patients in her clinical practice.By the way, the episode mentioned re Gut Microbiome with Dr. Christopher Lowry (who will be speaking at the 2023 Rocky Mountain Coaching Retreat & Symposium), is available here. Have you felt afraid to evolve and change your life because of the fear of what others may think or the potential discomfort that comes with self-exploration? Our brains are wired to protect us, so when we encounter something that seems dangerous or unfamiliar, we may feel a sense of resistance. But, by not allowing ourselves explore new possibilities, we limit our growth and our potential. In this episode we'll talk about embracing the discomfort of change in order to evolve and grow. Most of us are too afraid to embrace change because we're worried about what others might think. This fear of change and other people's opinions is the brain's natural tendency to protect us from potential harm or danger. But it can also prevent you from stepping out of your comfort zone and creating the life you really want to live. Ultimately, being okay with others being wrong about us requires a level of emotional maturity and resilience. It involves recognizing that we are not defined by the opinions of others, and that we have the power to choose how we respond to their perceptions of us. Check out this week's episode to hear more about: 8:17 What if someone thought you were mean because of what you said? 10:25 Can you be okay with other people being wrong about you? 12:30 How much more freedom would you have if you were not thinking you had to do things to make people think of you the way you want them to 14:38 We don't allow ourselves to evolve because we're so concerned with what other people think. 16:47 When I step out, I'm putting myself in harm's way, but I've got my own back. 18:48 Be comfortable being you and set an example. In this episode, we'll discuss the importance of shifting your mentality around food from diet or a way to manage weight to one of understanding that food can act as a metabolic therapy. While many breast cancer survivors focus on losing weight as a way to reduce their risk of cancer recurrence, research shows that food can play a critical role in reducing inflammation, supporting immune function, and improving overall health. We all know that a diet rich in whole foods, fruits, and vegetables can help reduce inflammation and support the body's natural defenses. So why don't we all adopt a healthy way of eating? I'll share some insights on that to help you move forward with creating the change you want to see in your life. Every person's body is different, and their nutrition needs may vary based on their specific health history and cancer treatment. But thinking of food as a metabolic therapy rather than just a diet or a way to manage weight can help you let go of shame and pressure and refocus your mental energy on healing and feeling well. Being diagnosed with breast cancer is a life-changing experience that can make us reassess our priorities and goals. It can also bring new clarity and focus to our lives. Living with intention means making conscious choices about how we want to live our lives. It means being intentional about the people we spend time with, the activities we engage in, and the goals we set for ourselves. Living with intention requires us to be present in the moment and to focus on what is important to us. Breast cancer can make us realize how precious life is and how important it is to make the most of our time. It can also bring new meaning and purpose to our lives. Living with intention can also help us cope with the challenges that come with a breast cancer diagnosis. It can give us a sense of control over our lives and help us stay focused on what we can do to improve our health and well-being. It can also help us stay positive and motivated, even in the face of adversity. In this podcast, we'll explore practical strategies for living with intention. We'll discuss how to set goals that align with our values and how to stay focused on what is important to us. We'll also talk about the importance of self-care and how to prioritize our physical and emotional health. By living with intention, breast cancer survivors can create a life that is fulfilling, meaningful, and joyful. We can use our experience with cancer to inspire us to make the most of every day and to live life to the fullest. It's National Cancer Prevention Month and I'm digging deep about what that means for us cancer survivors and thrivers. Sure, mammograms and self-breast exams are important screenings for early detection but that's one step ahead of prevention. Prevention is all the things you can do to keep your body in an optimally functioning state. When it comes to the preventative measures we can take, they often don't align with the desire to feel “normal” or to do things the way same way as before cancer. But were you really healthy before cancer? No. Because cancer is a process that can take a long time before it's detectable. It's during that time that you can explore your thoughts about the lifestyle choices you're making and work on prevention. Even after a diagnosis it's important to be able to look back and with gentle self-honesty, get really curious about things you may have thought were fine at that time and ask yourself now if continuing those habits truly supports your optimal health. In this week's episode I'll give you some surprising insights from leading cancer research centers that may inspire you to reevaluate your normal in favor of doing something exceptional for yourself. Getting through a hard time and processing a hard time are two very different things. When we just get through things, that often includes stuffing our emotions, denying ourselves the right to feel, and ultimately creating even deeper trauma. Processing a difficult is exactly the opposite. It's giving yourself space and grace and time and compassion. It's allowing yourself to get the support you need and releasing pain by putting it into words in a form that works for you. In this episode, I'll share some common thoughts I hear from survivors that tell me they haven't given themselves the space they need and deserve to process what life throws their way. I'll give you three questions you can ask yourself and consider the next time you feel like life just doesn't fit anymore so you can process what you're experiencing without judging yourself and denying your right to feel. After improving her health and fitness through plant-based nutrition, losing 60 pounds, and becoming an adult-onset athlete, she retired from her 20-year firefighting career to help people just like you. She works with people and organizations so they can reach their health and wellness goals. Shortly after her father died from blood cancer in 2008, blood and other cancers were designated as presumptive illnesses for professional firefighters in her state, prompting Cindy to research how to reduce her personal cancer risk. She discovered that a whole food, plant-based vegan diet that eliminated the consumption of animal products could be key to her health and cancer prevention. Without going on a diet and just putting better fuel (food) into her body, Cindy dropped 60 pounds, 7 uniform pants sizes, 3 uniform shirt sizes, and dropped her cholesterol and blood pressure readings in one year. Beyond looking better, her fitness level soared, and gave her new energy she could not contain. At the age of 38, Cindy became an adult-onset athlete, competing and medaling in marathons, triathlons, open water swim races, and endurance events! Best of all, she's been able to maintain this without dieting or feeling deprived! Her fire department was so impressed by her transformation that they put her in charge of the newly formed Wellness Fitness Initiative, a collaborative program between the International Association of Firefighters and International Association of Fire Chiefs. Cindy is a decorated Fire Captain and paramedic, awarded Firefighter of the Year and Oregon State Paramedic of the Year. As part of the prestigious Executive Fire Officer Program at the U.S. Fire Academy, Cindy published original research on firefighter and public safety. When I first began to realize the power of storytelling, I was reading the book, “Talk like TED”. The book focused on some of the most powerful TED talks ever given and what made them so moving for so many people. Over and over, the author found that the story the speaker shared was the secret sauce. Now I hear people's stories on a daily basis. I hear them tell stories of suffering and sadness. And I work to help them bring forth the story of resilience and empowerment that lays beneath the suffering. I know that when you become aware of the story you tell yourself and others about you, you begin to see the result that story creates…the life you're living. In this episode, I'll share a powerful experience I had listening to survivor stories and what it meant to me and to others in the room. I'll tell you three of the most common stories I hear from my clients that keep them stuck and I'll give you a simple tip to help you see your stories through a different lens that can change the path of whatever you decide on.
