If you've attended a yoga class, your teacher probably guided you through a nadi shodhana pranayama, where you use your fingers to block one nostril to isolate breath flow. The benefits are magnificent! Alternate nostril breathing can bring better balance to your nervous system and less stress response and activity over time. It also lowers blood pressure. But it's just as potent and powerful to visualise the breath traveling up and down each nostril if you're not in a class setting. Let me know how you enjoyed this! Today we are going to talk about one of my side passions. We will be going over an ancient breathing technique (called alternate nostril breathing) that can help us:lower blood pressuremanage stress and anxietylower heart rateimprove lung functionimprove brain functionAnd it can all be done free of charge, with barely any time commitment… yet is rarely leveraged by the average person. And at the end of this episode, I will lead you through a few rounds so you can experience first hand the power it can have on your mindset, health, and well being. Alternate nostril breathing is a yoga breathing exercise where people breathe through one nostril while holding the other shut, then change nostrils and repeat the process. Breathing exercises can help reduce stress and be good for the heart, lungs, and brain.References:Brain.fm App(First month Free, then 20% off subscription)Discount Code: coachdamiensdCaldera Lab Skin Carewww.calderalab.comDiscount Code: CoachDLinks:IG:@coachdamien_sd@damienrayevans@livinthedream_podcast YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCS6VuPgtVsdBpDj5oN3YQTgFB:https://www.facebook.com/coachdamienSD/

As your guide, I'll walk you through the alternate nostril breathing technique, a simple yet powerful practice that connects mind, body, and spirit. Allow the rhythm of your breath to lead you into a state of tranquility. After this, we transition into the humming bee's breath, a potent technique that opens up your veins and blood vessels for the clear passage of oxygenated blood. Feel the soothing vibrations on your lips and cheeks as you hum, akin to a gentle massage. The episode concludes with a moment of gratitude, a reminder that you are here because you chose to show up for yourself. This is a great practice to support parasympathetic activity; balance left/right hemisphere activity in the brain; and is my go-to practice for supporting sleep! 1. Take your left thumb and cover your left nostril. Breathe in deeply through your right nostril. Briefly hold your breath at the top of your inhale. 2. Now close your right nostril with one of your fingers, and release your left thumb from your left nostril (alternating nostrils). Breathe out through the left nostril. Exhale all of the air out. 3. Now breathe in through that same left nostril. Hold at the top. 4. Switch again - cover your left nostril and open your right nostril. Breath out through your right nostril. Exhale all of the air out. 5. Repeat this sequence for a total of 5-10 rounds. Note: You will complete one exhale and one inhale before switching nostrils. Enjoying the podcast?? We'd never heard of the phrase stinking thinking until Sharon Saline used it with us on the show this week. But we knew what it meant immediately. We live with it. It's the thinking we use about ourselves when we're compromised or when our reserves of resiliency have been tapped, and when what we need more than anything else is just a little bit of self-compassion. But as ADHDers, finding self-compassion isn't always natural. We have to make a practice of it, integrating the language and behaviors of compassion into our days and hours such that when we need it, it's not so hard to find. Dr. Sharon Saline specializes in an integrative approach to managing ADHD, anxiety, executive functioning skills, learning differences & mental health in neurodiverse children, teens, adults & families and she joins us again today to talk all about living with ADHD and still managing to find a dose of self-compassion under the weight of it all.About Sharon Saline, Psy.D.Sharon Saline, Psy.D. has focused her work on ADHD, anxiety, learning differences, and mental health challenges and their impact on school and family dynamics for over 30 years. Her unique perspective, a sibling of a child who wrestled with untreated ADHD, combined with decades of academic excellence and clinical experience, assists her in guiding families as they navigate from the confusing maze of diagnoses and conflict to successful interventions and connections. Dr. Saline funnels this expertise into her book, What Your ADHD Child Wishes You Knew: Working Together to Empower Kids for Success in School and Life. Heralded as an invaluable resource, her book is the recipient of two awards: Best Book Awards winner by American Book Fest and the Gold Medal from Moms' Choice Awards. Surya Bhedana Pranayama is one of the classical breathing techniques of Hatha Yoga. It involves breathing in through the right nostril, and out through the left. It is a variation on Alternate Nostril Breathing which aims to stimulate the Pingala nadi, an energy channel that in hatha yoga is linked to the sun, heat and activity. Modern studies have shown that the right nostril is linked with the left side of the brain, which is sometimes associated with linear, rational thinking, and the sympathetic nervous system, the part of our nervous system that mobilizes us for action   https://garethquinnredmond.bandcamp.com/   www.thebreathworkclub.ie   www.patreon/thebreathworkclub

In this episode we look at Chandra Bhedana, a variation on Alternate Nostril Breathing (which was covered in more detail in episode 17). For Chandra Bhedana we breathe in through the left nostril and out through the right nostril. In Yoga, this is thought to stimulate the Ida nadi, the energy channel that is linked to the moon, the parasympathetic nervous system, introspective behaviour, and the right side of the brain. This technique can help move us into a more calm, receptive state, and can be really nice to practice before bed, before meditation, after a big meal, or anytime to feel a little anxious   www.thebreathworkclub.ie

Episode 9: The breath is our most powerful tool to shift our state of being and it's right under our nose! We breathe without even thinking about it and yet our breath impacts our physical well-being, mood, emotional regulations, nervous system, heart, and brain. Do you notice how you breathe when you are stressed or anxious? It's fast, short, and shallow right? How about when you are calm, relaxing, drinking a cup of tea? A bit more subtle, maybe slower and down in the belly. The breath impacts our state of being, even down to which nostril we are breathing out of in this very moment. When we learn about the science of the breath and nasal cycle we can learn practices to reduce stress and anxiety, increase focus and emotional well-being, and calm the body, mind, and heart. In this episode we not only explore the science of the breath but we also learn the ancient practice of alternate nostril breathing so we can gain a deeper understanding on how our body functions and practices to induce change and empower no matter what we may be experiencing in the moment. 5 minute Alternate Nostril Breathing practice can be found on www.daphnelyon.com/membership, first weeks on me.Newsletter: www.daphnelyon.com/subscribeIG @thepractice

This traditional pranayama technique aims to balance the two main energy channels, the Ida and Pingala Nadis, through alternating the breath through the nostrils. In yoga, Nadis are subtle channels through which energy flows, and this energy has an influence on how we feel. The Ida Nadi represents the more calming, cooling lunar energy that supports more restful states. The Pingala Nadi represents the more dynamic solar energy that supports more active states. Each of these channels is linked to a nostril, and so this technique aims to both clear and balance these two channels   Music by Gareth Quinn Redmond   If you would like to support the production of this podcast you can do so by becoming a member on patreon/thebreathworkclub
