Baron 52 was the EC-47 was carrying eight crew members that was shot down over Laos during the predawn hours of 5 February 1973, a week after the Paris Peace Accords officially ended the United States involvement in the Vietnam War. The remains of four crewmen were recovered from the crash site, but those of the remaining four have never been found. Although the U.S. government considers them to have been killed in action and as late as 1996 listed them as "accounted for", family members and POW/MIA advocates believe the four survived the crash. The incident has been featured on several nationwide news programs and a 1991 episode of the U.S. television series Unsolved Mysteries. USS Pueblo Incident with Ex-POW John Mitchell - Stories Of Sacrifice

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 14, 2022 115:29

Interview with US Navy veteran and former Cold War POW John Mitchell who was captured on the USS Pueblo in 1968 and held Prisoner of War in North Korea for 11 months along with 81 other shipmates. The USS Pueblo (AGER-2) is a Banner-class environmental research ship, attached to Navy intelligence as a spy ship, which was attacked and captured by North Korean forces on 23 January 1968, in what was later known as the "Pueblo incident" or alternatively, as the "Pueblo crisis". The seizure of the U.S. Navy ship and her total 83 crew members, one of whom was killed in the attack, came less than a week after President Lyndon B. Johnson's State of the Union address to the United States Congress, a week before the start of the Tet Offensive in South Vietnam during the Vietnam War and three days after 31 men of North Korea's KPA Unit 124 had crossed the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and killed 26 South Koreans in an attempt to attack the South Korean Blue House (executive mansion) in the capital Seoul. The taking of Pueblo and the abuse and torture of her crew during the subsequent eleven months became a major Cold War incident, raising tensions between western and eastern powers. The Pueblo is still being held by NK and used as a propaganda museum at Pyongyang, NK. I'm looking forward to talking to John about his experience being held by NK and hear his story of the brutal torture he and his shipmates suffered at the hands of their captors. The podcast you are about to hear was a previous interview I did with the niece of SGT Durrell Tidwell early last year. We wanted to update the podcast about Durrell because we are happy to now say the Unknown graves at the Manila American Cemetery that are associated with his remains and the 18 others who were originally buried along with him at the Cabanatuan POW camp cemetery in Common Grave 212 has received a disinterment authorization from the Department of Defense. What this means is our forensic genealogy research and making contact with the descendants of the other POW/MIAs who were originally buried together in CG 212, their families have provided their FRS DNA to the DPAA and the remains transferred to the DPAA Lab to be identified and sent home to their family for burial under a grave marker that has their name. This process can take a few years to accomplish but the families of Cabanatuan common grave 212 now have closure! I cannot wait to welcome SGT Tidwell home to his family hopefully later this year! Please sit back and enjoy this rebroadcast of SGT Tidwell’s Story of Sacrifice we did with his niece Elizabeth! O’Donovan was the Executive Officer of the 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment. Major O’Donovan led by example on the front lines during the ill-fated defense of the Philippines. Always packing three pistols, he proved to be an inspiring leader to his men and a very aggressive, courageous fighter. He sustained multiple injuries and was hospitalized at least twice. Before the war he served as a Captain in the Army Reserves and was employed full time as instructor of Military Science and Tactics at the La Salle Institute in his hometown of Troy NY. He'd been married 9 years to the love of his life, Evelyn Murray, together they had 5 children. He enjoyed boxing, and writing, but most of his interests were in some way related to his calling in the military. Major James J. O’Donovan died at POW Camp Cabanatuan and was buried in the camp cemetery. After the war his remains were not identified and he was buried as an Unknown at the Manila American Cemetery. In December 2019 an Unknown grave associated with his remains was disinterred and sent to the DPAA Lab in Hawaii for identification. Interview with Timothy L. Porter who helped support the family compile the history of Talmadge Smithey who was serving as a member of the US Navy on the USS Canopus in the Philippine Islands when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. When Japanese attacks on US forces in the Philippines followed in 1942, the USS Canopus was severely damaged and Smithey and his comrades scuttled the ship to prevent it from getting into enemy hands. Smithey and his fellow shipmates then joined US and Filipino ground forces in defense of Bataan and Corregidor. Waiting for help that never arrived, Smithey and his fellow soldiers were outmanned and outnumbered. They finally succumbed to Japanese forces in May, 1942, and were taken prisoner. Smithey spent the next three years and four months as prisoners of war in the Philippines and then in Japan. This book is Smithey’s personal account of his capture and his captivity. Sweet Land of Liberty is one man’s story of courage, bravery, endurance, and perseverance. It’s a story of sacrifices Smithey and his fellow soldiers made in return for the freedom Americans enjoy today. This Podcast came about after spending the last 4 years researching hundreds of POW/MIAs who died in the notorious prison camps in the Pacific. I have done this by helping MIA families find the other families to convince them to give their DNA in hopes that one day their loved one will be identified. The mission of the Stories of Sacrifice Podcast is to bring you the life story of those who did not make it home to their loved ones or if their remains were sent home the odds are not all of them returned and in many cases were mixed together with the remains of their Brother’s in Arms who perished in POW prison camps and were buried in mass common graves. The Stories of Sacrifice podcast is to be their voice that was silenced long ago…One of the worst tragedies of war is - some soldiers simply become “Missing.” Their loved ones both morn and hope. The years drag on, and the long wait for answers can become unbearable. What could be worse than the emotional turmoil of “Not Knowing?” But for these brave men who sacrificed more than what our Country called them to do and ended up in many ways, forgotten. Still Forgotten after 75 years, by not giving them the fullest possible accounting. Their families have yet to receive closure knowing, their loved one is lost to the tragedies of war or in many cases buried under a marble cross without a name. In this episode we are bring you the stories of those POWs who fought next to our MIAs in the Philippines in their own words, Unlike the MIAs they survived and were able to come home to tell their story and the stories of why many didn’t return! Our future episodes will be the voice of the "Unknowns" told to you by their family and supporters! Please visit our website for more information about our services to POW/MIA families - https://www.uspowmiafamilylocating.comPlease visit our affiliate links that help support our Podcast. Cabanatuan POW Camp CemeteryThousands of United States Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and civilians were taken prisoners of war (POW) by the Japanese in the Philippine Islands between 7 December 1941 and 8 May 1942. The saga of the battle for the Philippines and the horrible treatment the survivors received in Japanese POW camps is the subject of numerous books and articles, but there are few resources that articulate graves registration operations, especially those focused on recovering and identifying the remains of U.S. servicemen who perished at the Cabanatuan Prisoner of War Camp. The details concerning the circumstances under which U.S. prisoners held at Cabanatuan lived and died were difficult and complicated, as were the attempts to disinter and identify their remains after the war’s end. 75 years later with the advancement in DNA the U.S. Government needs to reexamine the Cabanatuan unknown cases and look at using a DNA Lead Process to make these identifications. Please visit our website for more information about our services to POW/MIA families - https://www.uspowmiafamilylocating.comPlease visit our affiliate links that help support our Podcast.
