Buckle up to time travel to World War II and the post-war era as Hoosier History Live explores Indiana connections to the acclaimed Tuskegee Airmen. There even are Indiana/Tuskegee links; such as MOAA, to the aerial competition that eventually became known as "Top Gun", the inspiration for blockbuster movies. This show follows up a program in 2017 that delved into the lives of several Hoosiers who were fighter pilots in the trailblazing squadron, which drew its name from the Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama. This time, as Hoosier History Live salutes Black History Month, we will spotlight an aviator and educator from Angola, Ind., who became the director for the first two phases of flight training for the Tuskegee Airmen. Not only that, four of the Tuskegee pilots trained by Dr. Lewis Jackson (1912-1994) went to win the championship trophy in the first U.S. Air Force competition that came to be called "Top Gun". Those pilots in that initial competition (officially called the Air Force Fighter Gunnery Meet) were flying an aircraft made in Evansville, a Republic P-47 Thunderbolt. Our guide for all of this and other Tuskegee/Indiana connections will be Reginald DuValle, an Indianapolis native who graduated in 1979 from the U.S. Air Force Academy. Known as "Reg", he is the past president of the Indianapolis chapter of Tuskegee Airmen Inc, a nonprofit that honors members of the all-black Army air squadron who served during an era when the military was segregated.

As we conclude our third season of the Never Stop Serving Podcast, host Olivia Nunn speaks with MOAA member Col. Nicole Malachowski, USAF (Ret). Our season has largely focused on war stories, but in this episode we learn of a dynamic career cut short by a surprising illness. After several deployments flying the F-15E Striker Eagle, Malachowski became the first female pilot in the Thunderbirds, the Air Force's demonstration team. Following several assignments, including command of the 333rd Fighter Squadron, she was named a White House Fellow and Executive Director of the Joining Forces Initiative to support military families. In 2017, Malachowski was forced to medically retire due to the debilitating effects of a tick-borne illness. She has since become an advocate for wounded warriors and patients suffering the effects of tick-borne diseases.

Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion are these just the latest buzz words, or do they actually mean something in the military? Is the military a diverse fighting force? How do we grow a diverse fighting force? Does diversity matter? Listen to Olivia Nunn speak to Ms. Pat Williams, the Program Director of Engagement Career Transition Services at MOAA and a 35-year Navy Veteran, and Mr. Anselm Beach, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Equity and Inclusion, about the very topic of DEI. Let's get comfortable with the uncomfortable conversation of diversity. So tune in and listen to the changes and what can be done.
David Yorck was born in Germany during World War II and came to the United States in 1950. After joining the U.S. Marine Corps, he was immediately sent to Vietnam for the first of multiple tours. He would serve there as a platoon commander, company commander, and in an intelligence role.In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Col. Yorck walks us through the horrors of combat, his frustrations with the system, and how his role changed with greater responsibility. He also tells us about the Marine who helped him most in Vietnam and remains his best friend to this day and takes inside Operation Phoenix, a mission to identify and root out communists in South Vietnam. Finally, Col. Yorck discusses his extensive work with the Military Officers Association of America, an organization he has served faithfully for decades.
This is the first episode in a limited series in partnership with the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA). Captain Pat Williams may have had the most amazing military career of any of my guests. Pat spent 35 years in the Navy. We discuss her experience being enlisted, her move to becoming an officer and the contrast of each type of experience. We discuss why she never deployed on a ship in 35 years, how the military paid for her graduate studies and the impact of being a detailer on the lives of servicemembers. We talk about good leadership, and how diversity is so important to the success of servicemembers. Pat shares stories of how she helped at the Naval Academy to support both students and staff to ensure that everyone was successful. The impact of her work touched so many lives, and Pat gives great advice that can benefit us all. Pat shares her transition out and how she works with MOAA to help officers transition out of the military and into new careers. Today, we have the honor of talking to the phenomenal Mary Kelly! Mary is one of the most sought-after speakers on leadership! She is a retired Commander of the US Navy, a Ph.D., CSP, and a CPAE. Mary has a fascinating story to tell and some great insights and experiences to share! In this episode, she talks about good leadership, planning, and building a culture to encourage decision-making. She explains how to show your people that you care and allocate your time in the most valuable way. She also discusses discipline and developing healthy business habits. We hope you enjoy our engaging conversation with Mary Kelly today! Mary Kelly's bio Mary uses US military strategies and tactics and applies them to business systems, helping owners and teams maximize time, capital, and resources. Profiled in Money Magazine, Entrepreneur, Success, Forbes, Men's Health, MENSA, MOAA, the Wall Street Journal, and hundreds of other publications, Mary transforms leaders and their businesses. Each of Mary's 15 leadership books has its own wine label. Mary's story Mary grew up in Dallas, Texas. While trying to figure out her life, she was accepted into the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. That did three things for her: It gave her a world-class organizational experience in the educational world. She learned about engineering and leadership from those she considers the best people on the planet. She got the opportunity to serve her country. Serving her country While growing up, Mary was not sure what it meant to serve her country because she had never met anyone in the military. 25 years of active duty Mary initially intended to spend five years in the Navy. However, she felt the work she was doing was very important, and she could not leave. So she wound up doing about 25 years on active duty, mostly in Asia. After retiring from the Navy Mary was a professor at the Naval Academy and thought she would continue with that after retiring from the Navy. However, a colleague in the National Speakers Association saw her speak at a conference and suggested that she take her leadership talks on the road. So Mary decided to spend the next three to five years trying that out. Women in the Navy When Mary joined the Navy, less than 3% were women. Now, women make up about 14% of the Navy personnel. Women in the Navy have to prove that they have the right to be there. They also have to be better than they would be in other circumstances. Trying to prove herself motivated Mary to work harder. Using power for good Many people tend to underestimate the power of showing up. When Mary's boss showed up at the hospital after one of her petty officers got admitted, she saw how he used his power for good and realized how much of a difference showing up for your people can make. Good leadership Leaders should lead in a way that makes people want to follow them. Their direction should be so good that people become excited, even when things get tough. Planning Many people feel there is no point in planning anything when everything keeps changing. When people become overwhelmed, over-stressed, or paralyzed with inactivity and fear, leadership needs to kick in. Good leaders know where they are going Good leaders have a vision, and they are good communicators. They are flexible and have contingency plans. They know where they are going and show up every day, even when the plans change along the way. Building a culture that encourages making the best decisions Your people need to trust you. They need to know that you've got their back, and you support them, even when they make a wrong decision. Give your people enough grace to allow them to try things, push the envelope, and fail. Making tough decisions People don't have to like you to respect you or follow you. Team members expect their leaders to be decisive, even when it feels uncomfortable. Leaders have to make tough decisions, and that often involves firing people. Even though firing someone is hard, it sometimes has to be done to strengthen the rest of the team. Compensation packages Good leaders should take the time to make sure their people know what their compensation package is. Being part of something bigger A leader's job is to make people feel, believe, and understand what they do is more than a job. Your people need to know that they matter and what they are doing is part of something bigger than themselves. PIVOT Mary uses the acronym PIVOT to teach people what they need to show up with every day: P – Purpose I – Influence V – Volatility O – Opportunities T – Technology, Training, and Tactics Care and appreciation People need their leaders to care for them. They want to know that their first-line supervisors appreciate, value, and respect them and need them in the workplace. First-line supervisors can achieve that by showing their people that they trust them. They should also take an interest in their people's personal and career development and have conversations with them, even when there is no problem. A five-minute plan Mary has a five-minute plan, called The Year In Review Plan, to help leaders decide how to allocate their time, and understand what they need to do that nobody else can do. There are often others that can do things for you better than you can do them yourself. Mary's Not-to-Do List Mary created a template for a productivity planner that anyone can use. It helps people to understand what they do not need to do. You can download it for free at www.productiveleaders.com/free. Discipline Those who want to own a successful business need to be dedicated, disciplined, and determined. Discipline is all about creating and following a schedule that sets you up for success. Mary structures her day in fifteen-minute increments, from 6 am to 6 pm. Connect with Eric On LinkedIn On Facebook On Instagram On Website Connect with Mary Kelly On her Website
You did it! A well-earned military career has come to a close; you have faithfully served 20 or more dedicated years to our nation. The time has come, and you now receive a monthly retired check from good old Uncle Sam each month. You can now sit back, relax, play a few rounds of golf and live off that retired check... right? Well, for most retired service members, the answer is no, and for most retired service members, that retired pension gets taxed at both the federal and state levels. However, there are a few states that even though they have an income tax, they exempt military retired pay and pensions, which can be a real added benefit and cost savings, not only to the military member and their families but it becomes a value-added benefit to the state. Listen to Olivia Nunn speak to retired colonels Jeri Graham and Lee Lange, both of whom are MOAA members who advocate in helping to get all 50 states to exempt military retired pay and pensions. Find out why that's important for not only the military member but for the state and the economy.
A successful career in the military is no easy feat, regardless of whether that means four years or 30 years. For many, what's even more daunting is creating a second career beyond the uniform. For many military members, trying to answer the question of, "what do I want to be when I grow up," tends to be hard when transitioning after a life of service to the nation. In this episode, listen to Olivia Nunn speak to Pat Cole, the Program Director Career Transition Services at MOAA, who is the resident transition expert, along with Tasha McCullar, a MOAA member, Army Veteran, and more importantly, someone who navigated the transition space and successfully marketed herself for a second career and is thriving. Listen as they talk about the resources readily available to transitioning service members, the tools needed to market oneself, and the simple things you can be doing today to market yourself for a second career.
Arlington National Cemetery is one of the country's oldest national cemeteries. The cemetery's rolling hills mark the final resting place for more than 14,000 veterans, including those who fought in the Civil War. The nation's premier military cemetery is at a critical crossroads in its history. Nearly all 22 million living armed forces members and veterans are eligible for less than 95,000 remaining burial spaces within these hallowed grounds.Listen to Olivia Nunn speak to Mark Belinsky, Director of Currently Serving and Retired Affairs and MOAA, about the proposed changes at Arlington National Cemetery. Specifically, how these changes could impact current veterans and their families and the importance of calling into your local Congress members to help advocate for our heroes.
Service to our nation includes so many great benefits, health care being one of them. But what happens when you retire from the military? Where does your health coverage come from? What will it cost? Will the coverage be the same? Is your coverage automatic when you retire? If you have these questions and more, you will want to tune into this episode to find out!Listen to Olivia Nunn speak to teammate and resident expert Paul Frost, the Program Director for Financial Benefits Counseling, Education, and Veteran Services at MOAA. Listen as they talk about COLA and fees and it being the open season and so much more. You will not want to miss this important episode as it relates to your health.
Veterans have routinely reported illnesses and disabilities long after they return home from deployments, triggering a battle with the VA for health care and financial benefits. As many as 2.6 million veterans of the Vietnam War were exposed to Agent Orange, a tactical herbicide sprayed to destroy thick vegetation, according to ProPublica. The toxin has been recognized by the VA as a cause of certain presumptive diseases — a status that eliminates the burden of proof of servicemembers as they file claims for benefits — but studies linking other diseases have yet to be recognized. Most recently, veterans exposed to open-air burn pits and other environmental dangers during deployments in support of the war on terrorism are eligible to register their service with the VA. However, researchers, including VA staff, have not completed studies on hazards related to burn pits and other military environmental exposures, according to the VA.Listen to Olivia Nunn speak with teammate Cory Titus, the Director of Veteran Benefits and Guard and Reserve Affairs at MOAA about the importance of understanding the work behind the push for policy and legislation surrounding toxic exposures for our military members.
Transition or Transformation? However you frame it, it's a change, and change requires planning. Leaving the military after 20 plus years can be exciting but also daunting. One part of the planning phase must include your finances. For many of us, our paychecks have been a given. Every month, twice a month, a check has been deposited on time to our checking accounts. How do you plan for your financial success when there isn't a pay structure? How do you prepare and invest in a 401K, a Roth IRA, or even a rainy day savings stash? If you are one of the annual 200,000 transitioning service members and you find yourself wondering what you should be doing to prepare from a financial standpoint. Listen to Olivia Nunn speak with Shane Ostrom, CFP® , the Program Director for Finance at MOAA, on how you can prepare for your military retirement.
The Military Officers Association of America is deceptive in that the general public has little knowledge of them. However, they are one of the strongest if not the strongest lobbying organizations for both active duty military and veterans. With 21 lobbyists and a number of other legislative employees and the fact that they represent 350,000 members they are a great force for keeping the needs of our military in front of Congress. Listen in to hear what President Atkins , a man who rose from the enlisted ranks to have three stars on his shoulder has to say about their current efforts and how you can help.
The Military Officers Association of America exists to preserve the benefits earned by all service members, past and present. When it comes to money, specifically pay and benefits, our service members need to know that organizations are advocating on their behalf. Every year the discussion of pay comes up as part of the Department of Defense's budget. Host Lt. Col. Olivia Nunn, USA (Ret) and Col. Dan Merry, USAF (Ret), MOAA's vice president of government relations, discuss the very important topic of pay and benefits and why pay and advocacy go hand in hand.
The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) is the country's leading organization protecting the rights of military service members and their families. MOAA's mission is to improve the lives of those who serve and their families by advocating for the military community. Listen to LTC Olivia Nunn speak with Mark Belinsky, Director of Currently Serving and Retired Affairs at MOAA, on why knowing who and what MOAA does for the military community.
Dr. Ed Scott, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Morgan State, visits @1QLeadership to talk about his process in deciding to take the AD job. Scott covers common misconceptions about working at HBCUs, early wins in his tenure in the chair, and being creative in finding resources. Growing the number of athletics sponsors by over 500% and recruiting top staffers to his department are some of the specifics of the discussion. The conversation wraps talking about MOAA, the Minority Opportunity Athletic Association.

Ralph Wetterhahn went from 1100 knots to 11 knots, while serving as president, U.S. Merchant Marine Veterans of WWII, charged with maintaining and operating the historic SS Lane Victory berthed in San Pedro, CA. In addition, his skill as an aviation archaeologist, has enabled him to become a real life "Indiana Jones," traveling the world from Cambodia to the Russian Far East, to Guadalcanal, to the Philippines in search of aircraft wrecks, our nation's missing-in-action, and the amazing stories that his discoveries reveal. His documentary efforts have appeared on NOVA, Discovery, and National Geographic Channels, including The Last Flight of Bomber-31, Missing in MiG Alley, Dogfight Over Guadalcanal, and in the Air Aces segment about the legendary Col. Robin Olds. If you want to get something done in Congress then the Military Affairs Committee is the place to go. Congressman Greg Steube shares an insight into the operation of the Veterans Affairs Committee and what is planned in the future for our veterans.
Military spouse Sue Hoppin is a nationally recognized expert on military spouse and family issues. Sue tells us about her own relaunch at the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) 15 years ago in an admin role that led to her becoming MOAA's first deputy director for spouse outreach. While moving every few years nationally and internationally while her husband was an active duty service member, Sue discusses her "strategic volunteering," and the role it has played in her relaunch and beyond. Sue is the co-author of “A Family’s Guide to the Military” for the popular Dummies series and the founder of the National Military Spouse Network (NMSN), a membership organization supporting the professional goals of military spouses. Sue comments on how the Covid threat has popularized virtual work environments and portable jobs, both of which favor the military spouse.
Sylvia found the military by working as a civil servant for the California National Guard. She said it felt like a family and she wanted to be a part of the community as a service member and decided to join. She was mentored by Lt Col Ralph Page who had nine children and took her under his wing and gave her advice and mentorship as if she was one of his children. He was the one who pushed her to apply for Officer Candidate School. Her career culminated with her reaching the rank of Brigadier General that opened doors up for her and gave her the ability to represent women and the Latina community in a place that before did not have a voice or representation. She and her husband are both veterans and are both members of MOAA. And the primary thing they find important and why they are members is through the information provided by MOAA through email updates and the magazine. MOAA helps them stay current on what is going on in the military and on Capitol Hill and allows them to use their voice to contact various government representatives because they know what is happening. She also talked about the lobbying power of MOAA. We talked more about MOAA’s lobbying power in the first bonus episode with Aniela Szymanski, you can check out that episode here. But another critical important benefit is the transition resources, grants, and scholarships available to members. You can get a scholarship, interest-free loans, grants, and more. But there are also resources for resume writing to help you convert your military resume into something that will help you land a new job outside of the military. They also are connected with LinkedIn that can help connect you and build your network. So many great benefits when you leave military service and beyond. Health care is a program that has been on the forefront of Gen Crokett’s career and something she has been paying attention to after service. Currently, the military is looking into re-organizing the billets for medical care, the Spouse Angle interviewed MOAA representative Karen Ruedisueli to talk specifically about this issue, and the work MOAA was doing. And the voice MOAA provided has forced Congress to take another look at the proposed plan. Brigadier General Sylvia R. Crockett was assigned as the Land Component Commander of the California Army National Guard in October 2014. In this capacity, she is responsible for providing command and control over all non-divisional units in California. The units consist of five brigade-level commands and include the 1106th Theater Aviation Sustainment Maintenance Group, 49th Military Police Brigade, 115th Regional Support Group, 223rd Regional Training Institute, and the California Army National Guard Medical Command.General Crockett enlisted in the California Air National Guard as a supply technician in 1982. After serving two years with the 129th Rescue Wing, she transferred to the California Army National Guard to attend the California Military Academy. She was commissioned in 1985 as an Adjutant Corps Officer and subsequently became branch qualified as a Military Intelligence Officer. General Crockett has served in command positions from the Company level through up to the Brigade.Join MOAA TodayRelated Episode:Episode 33: Medical Care Could Soon Look Different for Many Military FamiliesBonus Episode: Advocacy with MOAABonus Episode: MOAA is more that Advocacy

There is also a Military Spouse Advisory Committee.Storm the HillMOAA is active in Advocacy on Capitol Hill and one of the responsibilities of Committee members is being part of the annual storm the hill event. Storming the Hill means a number of MOAA members and spouses come to Capitol on a specific day to talk to Congress members about various legislations that are being worked. When Rachel stormed the hill in 2019, they were advocating for removing the Widow’s Tax, and through the advocacy of MOAA and others, the legislation was changed. She also was able to participate virtually, due to COVID, and had a chance to meet with a congresswoman who normally didn’t meet with MOAA members because the MOAA representative was often a white male. Through her advocacy, she was able to bring a diverse voice to the table and help represent more military members. But MOAA is more than AdvocacyNext, we discuss some of the benefits of being an MOAA member ranging from transition services, hiring symposiums, scholarships, no-interest loans, the Military Officer Magazine, and numerous virtual webinars. Aniela decided to join the military when she was looking at what she would do in the civilian sector and it wasn’t quite what she was looking for. As she began to search for options, she saw a poster for the Marines and realized she could be a recruiter in the Marine Corps. She went through the Delayed Entry Judge Advocate Program and served on active duty for nine before transferring to the Reserves. She continued to stay active in helping veterans with legal work and that is how she found herself working at MOAA.While at MOAA she worked to help get the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act Passed. That allowed those on ships to get VA coverage for Agent Orange. It took years to get Vietnam Veterans benefits for diseases caused by Agent Orange on both land and sea. And there is currently an act in Congress working to prevent current and recent Middle East War veterans from going through the same long process. It is called the Toxic Exposure in the American Military (TEAM) Act. If you think you are suffering from an illness related to a burn pit check out this link for Veterans Affairs to register. She also worked to close loopholes that limited what “active duty” meant while serving in the Guard and Reserves. Allowing more members to qualify for the Post 9/11 GI Bill and for more members to receive full benefits. This work was directly connected to her service as a Reservist. After watching her father go through a ten-year struggle to qualify for a VA health care and disability from his service during Vietnam she was excited to help work to modernize the VA Claims Process. What used to take over a year now, takes 3-4 months. She encourages veterans to get involved in Veteran Service Organizations especially at the local level. If you can get involved in your local chapter you can help make an impact on the veteran community within your community. Also, reach out to organizations like MOAA and let them know what you are concerned about or struggling with. Real stories from their members are helpful when advocating for changes or benefits. So don’t be afraid to write to MOAA at the national level if you have a concern. They want to listen to you and help you get your voice heard.MOAA’s motto is Never Stop Serving because veterans have service engrained into who they are. My first guest on the Tami Jackson Show* tonight will be Paul Broun. After graduating from the University of Georgia and the Medical College of Georgia, Paul Broun devoted nearly four decades to serving others through the practice of medicine. Dr. Broun is passionate about the medical profession and enjoys helping patients whether as a family physician, in emergency medicine, or in the military. Several years before his election to Congress in 2007, to convenience his patients, Dr. Broun developed a practice based upon a style that is almost unique in modern times – one devoted entirely to house calls. At age 18, he volunteered to serve our nation as a U.S. Marine. He was later commissioned as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy. After his election to Congress, Dr. Broun continued to practice medicine in his role as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy Reserves and was promoted from Lt. Commander to Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserves. In 2012, Paul was deployed to Afghanistan where he treated sick and injured Marines and soldiers. As a military doctor he treated patients in the Navy Health Clinic at Marine Base Quantico and at the Brigade Medical Center at the U.S. Naval Academy. He was honorably discharged in 2014. Dr. Broun is deeply devoted to quality medical care for our Wounded Warriors and Veterans here at home. Paul and Niki Broun have been married since 1985. Dr. Broun has three adult children, Lucy, Carly and Collins. He has two grandchildren, Tillman and Lucile. The Brouns are members of Prince Avenue Baptist. He is a member of the American Legion, VFW, Military Order of World Wars, MOAA, the Marine Corps League, Navy League, and the Reserve Officers Association. An avid sportsman and hunter, Dr. Broun is a Life Member of both the NRA and Gun Owners of America. He is past president of the Georgia Sports Shooters Association and the Georgia Wildlife Federation. His is a former vice president of Safari Club International and is a Life Member of Quail Unlimited, Trout Unlimited and the Federation of Fly Fisherman. Dr. Broun is a strong constitutional conservative and served in Congress from 2007 - 2015. Listen in as Dr. Broun and I talk about several topics, including evolution! ************************** My guest in the second half hour will be Eric Seligman. Erik Seligman is an engineer living in Hillsboro, Oregon, with his wife and 6th-grade daughter. Seligman attended Carnegie Mellon University and Princeton University, and is a formal verification architect at Intel. He served from 2013-2017 on the board of the Hillsboro School District, the 4th largest k-12. district in Oregon. He has hosted a “fun math” podcast called "Math Mutation" for over 10 years, and written two books on non-politics topics. We have talked many times about the challenges veterans face with maintaining their mental health after combat. But what if we can address possible mental health challenges before the military member even leaves the service? Can we, and should we, better train our military to handle the mental strains of combat before they go to work? We speak with former Air Force captain Patricia Capps, legislative director for the Central VA chapter of the MOAA, about the creation of a Behavioral Health Corps and what that would mean for military members and veterans.
