070: I DON'T TRUST THEM: Trusting People at Work

Play Episode Listen Later May 20, 2021 40:02

I recently did a corporate workshop around trusting people at work. When you're in a personal or intimate relationship with someone, you get to choose whether you're in that relationship or not.  And one of the reasons you choose to be in a relationship is based on how much you trust someone. At work, you don't always get to choose who you work with.  Often you're building trust and trying to do your best work at the same time and sometimes it feels like those two things can be at cross-purposes.  You feel like you're forced into choosing between ‘trusting this person' and ‘being recognized for doing my great work'. But that's a false choice. I would actually say that in order to show up at your best, you must be trusting.  Does that sound naive? I'm going to prove to you that it's quite the opposite.  I've tried it both ways and being distrustful of people only hurts you.Tune in to this week's episode to discover the obvious and not so obvious ways of trusting people at work, how not trusting can make you untrustworthy in the process and what you can do instead. A world where you trust people despite their behaviour sounds a bit naive, but I'm going to show you why it's actually the smartest, shrewdest thing you can do for yourself and your team.

I've talked about perfectionism before.  This week, I wanted to take a slightly different view on it.  Perfectionism can show up in really sneaky ways and plagues smart people and high-achievers and stops you from making significant progress on your goals.  Perfectionist thinking is so crafty that you wouldn't even consider yourself a perfectionist, yet it could still be a blind spot. Join me as I talk about some of the perfectionist thinking that is getting in your way without knowing it and share exactly what you need to do to stop perfectionist thinking in its tracks.I'll share two concepts that will help you bypass perfectionism for good.  More importantly, these concepts will help you reach your goals faster and with a lot less anxiety and stress. So that next time you set a goal for yourself, you'll know for sure that you have the ability to follow through and achieve it.  No watering it down.  Not take backs or start overs.  Just you, trusting yourself to always do what you say you're going to do.

You can definitely benefit from feedback. Feedback is a tool you can use to accelerate your growth. Of course it is.  Unfortunately, most people suck at giving feedback at work. Often the feedback is not thought through and is delivered up as criticism. That is a true tragedy.  But that's not what I want to talk to you about today. What I want to chat about is how not to make other people's messy feedback into a mess for yourself.  I believe feedback is a good thing.  It helps you grow faster.  Unfortunately, not all feedback is relevant feedback.  And not all relevant feedback is delivered effectively.Your job is to hear all of it, weed through it, decide what to keep and avoid using it against yourself by taking it personally.  And I know that can be a big ask - particularly if the feedback is direct, served critically and coming from someone with authority.  When that happens, it's easy to make the feedback mean something is wrong with you and beat the crap out of yourself. And you know that beating the crap out of yourself never works and leads to all sorts of other messy behaviors that are a giant waste of your time and talent.I want to help you learn to use badly delivered feedback to your advantage.  That's the focus of this week's podcast episode that's obviously called “Use Badly Delivered Feedback to Your Advantage”

OK.  That's one strategy.  What else ya got?Getting promoted is about a lot more than just doing your job well.  I mean, that's important too.  But there's more to it than that.  And frankly, are you sure you're doing your job well?  How are you measuring that?  How are the decision makers measuring that?If you want to get promoted, you want to make it so that it's a no brainer for all the decision makers. You want to make it so when they're sitting around a table (or a zoom call), having a talent management discussion, and your name comes up, everyone is like “oh ya, for sure she should be promoted - no question”.Often people think that their only input into their promotion is how well they do their job.  And that's not totally true.  You have a lot more control than that. You don't have to wait around for other people to decide if you're ready. In this week's episode, I'm going to take you through my A.I.M. method to being promoted. You would need more. It's actually kinda like an addiction.  You need more and more reminders you're great in order to actually BE GREAT.  The biggest problem with this addiction is you can't control when you get your ‘next hit'. The only way to break the appreciation addiction is to get off the junk.  The junk in this case is the reliance on other people to confirm your greatness...I mean, it's nice when it happens.  But frankly, you need consistent appreciation you can control.  And that comes from you.The trick is how do you go from self-doubt to self-appreciation?  I mean if it was easy, then everyone would do it, right?  So ya… it's not easy, but it is simple. You might believe that appreciating yourself is impossibly hard work, but believe me… it's way easier than waiting around for someone else to notice how awesome you are.Plus, once it clicks… you'll be off ‘the junk' for good.  And that's a freedom worth fighting for. In this episode, you'll learn why appreciation is so important, how it impacts your performance and how to get more of it for yourself.

Why?Because fear of failure can stagnate your growth.Even the people who are used to taking chances struggle with managing failure at work.Which is understandable.. It brings on such a negative notion that people would rather play it safe than risk a new idea.Especially because failure at work is often “frowned upon”. Let's be honest, you get in trouble when you fail at work. People tend to freak out and start playing the blame game.“It doesn't feel like I'm allowed to make a mistake at work.” So if I need to fail to be successful, but the people at work don't want me to fail, what's the solution? Making career decisions is where people spend a lot of time spinning out.  The #1 thing people bring up when they first talk to me is “I don't know what I want from my career”.  And I'm generally speaking to strong, ambitious, intelligent women.  These women have already achieved so much in their careers (whether they believe that or not). And yet… when it comes to making career decisions for themselves, they're lost. Why?It's simple.  They believe making the “wrong” career decisions will impact their happiness.  They think that they can only be happy if they make the absolute perfect career decisions. You often think the job you choose has control over your happiness, or the city you live in, or the person you marry, or the boss you have, or your job title has control over your happiness. And so you think that you need to control all those external things in order to be happy. It's exhausting.  And btw, it doesn't work anyway. You are too smart to be giving away so much power. Because what determines if those things are the right choices for you? You do. So the only way something is a ‘wrong decision' is if you let it be. The power over your happiness is something YOU can control and has nothing to do with what happens after you make your decisions.  And that's what we're covering in this episode. In this episode, you'll learn how to make career decisions that you don't regret.  Ever. So now you can save all that time worrying and spinning and invest it back into yourself.  Imagine what can happen when you do that!

Your brain is resistant to doing the things you know you should do (see Success Intolerance). And so, if it's tough, it's because YOU are making it tougher than it needs to be. All the stress, fear and discomfort are coming from you, whether you know it or not. You have thoughts that are creating all the negative emotions and slowing down your traction towards career success. You're getting in your own way with all the drama. And the only way to get out of your own way is to get your head under control and to stop focusing on all the obstacles and negativity. That's why mindset management and coaching are the best investment you could ever make.  I wish I'd done it years ago.But what should you do instead of thinking unproductive thoughts that drive negative emotions?  You might think it's thinking of productive thoughts that drive positive emotions. But not necessarily. The emotions you need to reach your goals do not necessarily require you to move from demotivated and scared to motivated and confident. Those are great emotions, but honestly, I think they're small potatoes to the emotion I'm recommending you focus on.  And I'll bet you'll never guess. In this episode I'm going to give you my favourite emotion for helping get maximum traction in your career success and give you my mathematical equation to help get there.

One of the big mindset challenges that I've been meaning to talk about, and comes up all the time is something I call SUCCESS INTOLERANCE.This is a term I made up. You probably know it as Self-Sabotage.  But I like success intolerance because it more perfectly describes what is actually happening in your brain.  Self-sabotage is the action that you take. But success intolerance is what happens in your brain that drives the actions that you would consider as self-sabotage.  So success intolerance is more causal.  And self-sabotage is the symptom of success intolerance. Success Intolerance is when your brain tries to avoid the discomfort of going after the success you want by feeding you unproductive thoughts that stop you from taking the action necessary to achieve growth. In this episode we'll define success intolerance, share how to recognize it at work and ultimately deal with it.Check out the links and shownotes at thecareerreset.com/49

That's why it's so perfect. It's exactly as it sounds - we get dependent on our own drama.  We get unconsciously dependent on something at work being a problem so that we can avoid a bigger problem (usually of our own making). And you know this is a real thing because you know those people who are like that.  Everything is an issue.  Nothing can be solved.  Or they've been complaining about the same thing for years and don't do anything about it.You probably have someone like that on your team.  We totally notice it in other people… but as always, you completely miss when you're doing it.  So let's explore if you are creating and depending on your own drama.  We're going to talk about why we get drama dependent, how to recognize the signs, and how to start practicing being drama free.

You're going to realize you're more confident than you give yourself credit for.  And that's a game-changer too.  Because even though confidence may not be a growth emotion (yes, you read that right), it's still something that creates a lot of positive energy so you can do your best work. We're also going to cover how self-confidence turns into arrogance.  Spoiler alert - it doesn't. Truly self-confident people are never arrogant. Who struggles with self-confidence? I do.  And so do most people I know.  We focus on what's missing in our performance.  In our abilities.  And in ourselves. That's because our brain is wired to focus on what's missing.  It's a primitive instinct that alerts us to possible danger. It was useful back in the day.But in today's world, it's simply an instinct that makes us focus on why we're not worthy and eats away at our self-confidence.For most of my life, I have operated this way. I've looked for what's missing in my abilities.I told myself that focusing on ‘what's missing' and where I could be better, smarter, faster, stronger, thinner, etc, etc., was what was pushing me forward. But that is a thought error.Focusing on what's missing in my performance is not a driver of achievements. It's an inhibitor. If you want to achieve great things, you must believe in yourself ahead of time. But how?How do you believe in your ability to do something if you've never done it before? One way is to create a track record of achievements. Demonstrate to yourself how far you've come, and your ability to go further.  To achieve great things. In this episode, I'll share how to create a track record of achievements that can help build your self-confidence and train your brain to always focus on what's working.

Companies pay huge bucks to Agencies to help them do this. Why? Because it's important. People buy from brands they connect with and trust for a consistent experience. It's the same for you.  You have a personal brand whether you're focused on it or not. Everything you do or don't do sends a message and leaves a mark about what it's like to work with you. So it makes sense that if you want to accelerate your growth and build a strong reputation about WHAT and HOW you deliver, it's time to get purposeful about the brand you're building. In this episode, Julie and I are going to apply the principles of Corporate Branding to your Personal Brand Strategy. Julie and I talk about why personal brand strategies are important, what can happen if you don't have one, how to lean into yours and the five questions to ask yourself to start building your personal brand strategy.Check out the details in the show notes @ thecareerreset.com/21
