The Slow Road to Gender Equality: Catherine Fox Wants to Break The Delusion and Realise The Power of Intention and Imagination

Send me a messageToday's guest is the indomitable Catherine Fox. A woman of such immense fierceness, incisive analytical powers and a mastery of craft that has led to authoring or co-authoring six books. Catherine was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in 2022 for significant service to journalism, gender equality and diversity. Catherine's career is nothing short of phenomenal - beyond the books and order of Australia medal, she wrote for the Australian Financial Review for more than two decades, editing their Corporate Women column, was awarded a Walkley award for women's leadership in media in 2017. While at the AFR she helped to establish the 100 women of influence awards, and was named as one in 2018, has been a gender equality advisor to the Australian defence force and sits on the Australians investing in women board. Time with her was nothing short of an honour. Her latest book, Breaking the Boss Bias - How to Get More Women Into Leadership is an essential read. The reality check Catherine lays out in this book affected me, and it's something the men listening to this in particular would be well suited and recommended to go out and get immediately. The book struck me for two primary reasons: the first being how delusional progress on gender equality has been and remains in Australia and around the world. And secondly how relatable I found Catherine's work to be to every other realm of sustainability from climate inaction to biodiversity loss and species extinction to housing unaffordability and the degradation of trust in our society. Catherine's works paints a picture within a picture and it's a tormenting one. Never have so many been aware of and attempting to engage in any and all issues that would deliver more equitable and sustainable futures, yet the empirical evidence and data shows that slow gains hard ear have been and are slipping. This is depressing and dispiriting information, yet also necessary. Crisis and disaster - whether that is gender inequity, the climate, housing - can only be approached in my mind if there is a shared and collective appreciation of the truth. A reckoning that at its heart is about becoming and being honest with reality. Catherine's work for decades has been about exactly this, and it was enlightening and agitating to both read her book and to spend this time with her.Thank you for listening today, I appreciate it and don't take your precious time for granted. If you enjoyed this episode or any other, please offer a rating as the algorithms appreciate that type of interaction, share the show with friends, colleagues and on social media - tag me in with your comments - and subscribe.Today's show is delivered with Altiorem. However how we choose to perceive that situation is what prompts us to react either positively, with a step-by-step solution mindset that leads to a feeling of control... or to react in a defeated, overwhelmed mindset that leads to a feeling of stress."  (Rebecca Allen, Career Success Coach and host of Her Ambitious Career podcast) This is about moving from an emotional standpoint and saying "a situation is stressful"... To... "this is a tricky situation [objective perspective] and how I choose to approach it won't make me feel stressed... but objective and optimistic!" Why it was selected for "CBNation Architects": One of the most impactful things I heard over, and over and over again was the importance of the morning routine and while it seems obvious it is often overlooked. When starting something new and thinking of planning and preparation, don't forget about the morning routine. Laura talked a lot about her journey and how we may not feel comfortable and that might lead to the opportunity. She talked about how powerful the "Triple A"--alignment, awareness and action--is for the women she works with.   Check out premium content in the CBNation Library at http://cbnation.co/library and pick up our eBook to hear some of the best lessons at http://cbnation.co/shop. From Jenna: I was once in the busy corporate world, and I struggled with confidence and body image. I was always trying quick fixes to lose weight. I think it's important for women in the workplace to find a balance between their career and their health. I struggled with this myself when I was working in an office. As corporate women, we tend to struggle with creating a life of both success and happiness within our careers and families. We want the "And Life," a life of success and happiness, but we don't know how to get it. In this mini-series, we have talked about why we feel trapped in our current lives and why we want more. Now we are diving into how we break free of the negative, self-defeating emotions, how we break free of the cycle of doubt and guilt and step into the life we deserve. Are you ready to step into the life you deserve? Remember, what we talked about last week? We agreed that it's fine to want more because success and happiness are not the same things. You can have either success or fulfillment or you could have both, but one doesn't guarantee the other. As much as you have strived to be successful you must also strive and give intentional focus to being happy and fulfilled! So how do we do it? How do we intentionally create a happy life? Get our minds right. Accept that happiness and success don't depend on the other. Accept that what keeps us trapped in the “not knowing” when it comes to both success and happiness. "I don't know what makes me successful." "I don't know what a happy life or life on my terms looks like." In a world where you try to come across as you know it all, i.e., your career, it's scary to admit that you honestly don't know the exact steps that generate career success much less the steps to personal fulfillment. The reality is that this is exactly what you must do, learn those steps and strategies. 3. You break free by learning! You must learn the exact actions that result in corporate success and the exact actions that define happiness for you. If you have not already downloaded your workbook for this mini-series, get it here and start creating your "And Life." Be Legendary!

Welcome to the 4-part mini-series dedicated to helping corporate executive women create their "And Life," a life of career success and personal fulfillment. Last week we identified why we have started feeling trapped in our current lives. Today let's address the elephant in the room, why we want more out of life. Why do you want more? Now if you immediately said to yourself, “I am grateful for what I have, I don't want more” then listen up. As high-achievers, we don't say “we want more.” We say “I am working for more, I am pushing for more, I am striving for more.” We don't "want" for things, we put it in achiever terms and we go after more. So Step #1 in this process, answer these questions: Do you look at your life and wish you had more time to spend with those you love? Do you appreciate all that you have and more but tell yourself this is as good as it gets because you can't selfishly ask for more? Do you never feel satisfied, to the point that you are always striving for the next promotion, next project, etc.? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the reality is that you want more. But here's the key point to this, which is actually step #2, consciously acknowledging what you're asking for more of. You're not asking for more success, you're asking for more happiness. They are not the same things! You can't feel frustrated, ashamed, or ungrateful for wanting more when you're asking for more of something you don't already have. Success and happiness are two separate life events. So when we want more, we tell ourselves we don't deserve it because we already have so much. But know this, wanting more doesn't mean: You failed You signed up for this life of success without fulfillment You're the only one People who love you want you to be miserable (they just don't understand why you are not happy already) Wanting more is normal. Wanting happiness and fulfillment is normal. Your goal is to let go of the internal conflict that you can't "want more" happiness because you're ungrateful. Remember, you're asking for something you don't currently have. Ready to take action and start working toward career success and personal fulfillment? Creating Your "And Life:" Why Corporate Women Feel Trapped

Legendary Leaders: Making Legendary Leaders

This month we are focused on helping you create your "And Life." As corporate executives, we have a life full of achievement and success. We have worked diligently to earn this life and yet when we reach our late 30s/early 40s, we realize that something is missing. We also want fulfillment. How do we get it? How do we create an "And Life" of both achievement and fulfillment? We're not quite sure, but we do know the life we have right now is causing us to feel trapped. It sounds crazy. To the outside world, you have it all. You have a life most people envy. The success, the high-paying job, the status, the money, the house, the car, the family, the kids who are smart and talented in sports, art, music, or all of the above. People look at you and think, “I'm sure she's just living her best life.” But is that your reality? Deep down you know that you're not living your best life. Far from it. Because you have realized over the past few years that success and fulfillment (or happiness) are not the same things. You see, when we were kids we were told that we could have it all; a successful career, a beautiful family, and a happy life. But no one taught us HOW to have it all. We were told to get good grades, get into a good college, get a good job, have a nice family, and buy a good house, and that when we did all of those things, we would have happiness. However, over the past few years, we have realized that being successful isn't making us happy. Because we have done all of those things and yet the voice in our head is saying, “Seriously, this is it?!” Success makes you feel secure, it makes you feel good that you can provide for your family, but it doesn't make you feel fulfilled and happy. How do we start to feel fulfilled? We need time back in our day to start exploring this part of ourselves. We are ready to stop giving everything to our careers. We want our time back. But then the fear sets in. We honestly have no clue what we can stop doing at work and what we must keep doing to maintain our level of success and security. The idea of pursuing changes that could jeopardize our careers is unthinkable. We've worked too hard! We have already sacrificed so much! And, we also can't be selfish and damage the income that helps support our families. These negative emotions, combined with the lack of clarity on what actions we must take in order to maintain our careers has us trapped. Do feel trapped right now? Are you tired of sacrificing every part of yourself and your life for your career and yet living in a place of uncertainty as to how to maintain what you have and create fulfillment and happiness? Are you thinking, "Maybe this next promotion will result in happiness?" Here's the truth, it won't. It's time to acknowledge what you already know, success doesn't equal happiness. The first step in getting happiness is to believe you deserve it. Then you must acknowledge the fact that you have done nothing wrong on your current path to "cause" this. There is no failure here, only growth. If you want to create your "And Life," it's time to take the first step and understand why you feel trapped. Mindset issues are untrue beliefs that disempower you. Most often these beliefs are unconscious, and unless you work with them to expose their falseness, they will guide you to make disempowering decisions and actions. Doing nothing is disempowering. Staying quiet when someone takes credit for your work is disempowering. Not asking for what you want is disempowering. If any of these sounds like you, at the root of these disempowering actions are untrue beliefs you have about yourself. These are mindset issues ladies.
