Many have donned the Michael Myers mask throughout the “Halloween” franchise, but only one was the original Shape — Nick Castle. Tune in to hear all about playing this iconic villain in John Carpenter's 1978 classic, the story behind his return to the franchise in Blumhouse's trilogy, and we even chat a bit about some of his writing and directing credits — “Escape from New York,” “The Last Starfighter” and “Tag: The Assassination Game.”

The term ‘nil' refers to the absence of value, but we often imbue it with much more meaning than just that. Today, hosts Joël and Stephanie discuss the various ways we tend to project extra semantics onto nil and the implications of this before unpacking potential alternatives and trade-offs. Joël and Stephanie highlight some of the key ways programmers project additional meaning onto nil (and why), like when it's used to create a guest session, and how this can lead to bugs, confusion, and poor user experiences. They discuss solutions to this problem, like introducing objects for improved readability, before taking a closer look at the implications of excessive guard clauses in code. Our hosts also explore the three-state Boolean problem, illustrating the pitfalls of using nullable Booleans, and why you should use default values in your database. Joël then shares insights from the Elm community and how it encourages rigorous checks and structured data modeling to manage nil values effectively. They advocate for using nil only to represent truly optional data, cautioning against overloading nil with additional meanings that can compromise code clarity and reliability. Joël also shares a fun example of modeling a card deck, explaining why you might be tempted to add extra semantics onto nil, and why the joker always inevitably ends up causing chaos! Key Points From This Episode The project Joël is working on and why he's concerned about bugs and readability. Potential solutions for a confusing constant definition in a nested module. A client work update from Stephanie: cleaning up code and removing dead dependencies. How she used Figjam to discover dependencies and navigate her work. Today's topic: how programmers project extra semantics onto nil. What makes nil really tricky to use, like forcing you to go down a default path. How nil sweeps the cases you don't want to think too hard about under the rug. Extra semantics that accompany nil (that you might not know about) like a guest session. Examples of how these semantics mean different things in different contexts. How these can lead to bugs, hard-to-find knowledge, confusion, and poor user experiences. Introducing objects to replace extra nil semantics, improve readability, and other solutions. Some of the reasons why programmers tend to project extra semantics onto nil. How to notice that nil has additional meanings, and when to model it differently. The implications of excessive guard clauses in code. An overview of the three-state Boolean problem with nullable Booleans. Connecting with the Elm community: how it can help you conduct more rigorous checks. Some of the good reasons to have nil as a value in your database. The benefits of using nil only to represent truly optional data. In our third installment of 'Ani-May', we decide to both check out A Silent Voice: The Movie (or Koe no Katachi, lit. 'The Shape of Voice) for the very first time. Sophie was 'drawn' to it for the pretty cover art, although the themes addressed in the film itself are anything but...
Presenting episode 108 of the Skwigly Animation Podcast! In this episode we welcome Oscar-winning writer/filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (famed for such films as 'Pan's Labyrinth', 'Hellboy' and 'The Shape of Water') and stop-motion industry veteran Mark Gustafson, directors of the highly-anticipated stop-motion adaptation of 'Pinocchio' that dropped on Netflix earlier this month to universal praise and admiration. Drawing on the classic Carlo Collodi tale, the musical adventure is set during the rise of Fascism in Mussolini's Italy and tells “a story of love and disobedience as Pinocchio struggles to live up to his father's expectations”. Also discussed: A closer look at Illumination's upcoming 'Super Mario Bros.' movie, hype and early glimpses of 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse', Oscars predictions and the lamentable dearth of animation representation in the 2022 Sight and Sound Greatest Films of All Time poll. Presented by Steve Henderson and Ryan Gaur Interview conducted by Ben Mitchell Edited and produced by Ben Mitchell Music by Ben Mitchell
44 years in the making. 13 movies. Countless interpretations. Myth making. What else is there to say about the Halloween movies. Starting with one of the greatest directors of all time John Carpenter, and Hollywood royalty Jamie Lee Curtis, Halloween movies has been there for my generations whole lives. We have seen the great(Halloween 1978, Halloween 2019) not so great (Michael Myers vs. Ant Man, Halloween Resurrection) the ones that divided us fans (Rob Zombie Halloweens) and perhaps one of the only sequels in any franchises history to not feature the main characters (Halloween 3, bitchin' by the way). How do you end something so special to so many people, something tremendously influential? That's what The Dropped Culture Podcast covers on this special episode! Let us know what you think of Halloween Ends at droppedculture.com or anywhere you get your podcast needs! Happy Halloween!

Nonconforming beyond the limitations of what's typically expected of men and women has been happening for many centuries. A part of history and tradition which, some might say, even crossed into religion. But focusing on the years 200–1400 C.E, how were non-binary identities defined? In this episode, Matt is joined by professor and author Leah Devin. Leah talks about their new book and the research surrounding it. Author of 'The Shape of Sex', they delve into the history of nonbinary sex, from its embrace in early Christianity to the attempted erasure at the turn of the thirteenth century. If you're enjoying this podcast and looking for more fascinating Medieval content then subscribe to our Medieval Monday newsletter here.If you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit.To download, go to Android or Apple store See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Could Michael Emerson play James Bond? How great is Tunisia, even though the sand is a bit too coarse and rough and irritating and gets everywhere? Is some of the dialogue in this episode a bit hammy? Is Kate a bit on the nose this episode? Is it great that Bernard knows Morse code? Why are we laughing so much at Claire getting blown up and somehow surviving? What scene is such a great scene that it will probably be the top moment of the entire season? This week on the Horror Junkies Podcast, the guys in the studio super late and sleep deprived. We decided that since another Master of Horror left this world to the next, that we would do a tributecast. And of course we are talking about the recent passing of George A. Romero. First, as always, Patrick A.K.A Tiny Rick dives into the news. This week we held back a bit on the news, so we could spend more time discussing Romero and his films. Some highlights that we discussed were: 'The Snowman' featuring Michael Fassbender, and Guillermo del Toro's debut trailer for his upcoming movie 'The Shape of Water'. Both these films looking stunning and we cannot wait for them to be released. Getting into the main portion of the show. Romero redefined how horror movies would be made with the debut of his movie 'Night of the Living Dead', shaping the world from this one film that the Horror movie culture could in fact tackle social commentaries. We saw in 'Night of the Living Dead' how the lead act Duane Jones, not killed by the hordes of Zombies he had just spent 90 minutes fending off, but rather meet his demise by the hands of the armed militia. The movies commentary of the Civil Rights movement hits so hard, you yourself might become the undead. This is just one example of many on how Romero's work changed the Horror world, we go into much more during the show. We played SuperFight this week and finally Angel and Mike got to battle each other. In the first round Angel won with Buffalo Bill who gets stronger when he drinks blood defeating Jigsaw armed with stakes, cross, and some garlic. We did another quick round and Mike ended up winning with a tribe of cannibals armed with one gun with silver bullets. Angel had Wolfman, who was having some sort of religious breakdown. As always, tell us how were doing and be sure to share our show with your friends. Follow us on Instagram and Twitter @HorrorJunkiesFl if you want to see how stupid we get.
