On this episode of Tips Appreciated, we have Michelle and Amanda of @Eat.Shop.Love.AB on Instagram to talk about marketing tips and strategies for small businesses, how to best use social media as a marketing tactic, and how to tell your story authentically. They speak on the many benefits of using social media to grow awareness of your small business and how to maximize the impact of your marketing budget so that you get the most bang for your buck! Michelle and Amanda also share their thoughts on how social media influencers and micro influencers are being used as a marketing tactic, as well as the main challenges small businesses face in marketing and branding. Did you know? If every Calgary household spent $10 a month buying local, the Calgary economy would get a GDP boost of $52 million and that would generate an additional 823 jobs in the city! Like Michelle and Amanda say, don’t pressure yourself too much to buy local, it should be a feel-good act of contribution and support for your community. Getting Smart Podcast

This week, Tom is sitting down with author and advisor, Michelle Weise, to discuss her new book, Long Life Learning: Preparing for Jobs that Don't Even Exist Yet. Michelle is currently serving as an entrepreneur-in-residence and Senior Advisor at Imaginable Futures, a venture of The Omidyar Group. Michelle was formerly the Chief Innovation Officer at Strada Education Network’s Institute for the Future of Work, and Sandbox Collaborative, the innovation center of Southern New Hampshire University. She was also the co-author of Hire Education: Mastery, Modularization, and the Workforce Revolution, with Clayton Christensen. In this conversation, Tom and Michelle discuss her background in the arts and innovation; how and why she came to write her new book, Long Life Learning; what long life learning means to her; what she predicts to be the future of business models for long life learning; and her advice on how we can all make good decisions about what to learn next no matter where we are on our long life learning journey.   Key Takeaways: [:10] About today’s episode with Michelle Weise. [:55] Tom Vander Ark welcomes Michelle to the podcast. [:59] Tom congratulates Michelle on her new book, Long Life Learning. [1:37] When did Michelle’s interest in language, literature, and poetry begin? [2:27] Michelle elaborates on her deep passion for poetry and how both reading and writing it helped her get through the death of her 10th-grade chemistry teacher. [3:07] Michelle’s exploration of Asian-American and African-American poetry and fiction in graduate school. [3:58] Michelle’s favorite African-American poet and what drew her to Asian-American poetry in particular. [4:57] Tom highlights a poet whose work he recently fell in love with: Rita Dove. [5:14] How and why Michelle came to be a Fulbright Scholar in Seoul, South Korea. [6:20] Michelle’s path after coming from Korea and why she decided to join an ed-tech start-up with Gunnar Counselman. [9:15] After a short stint at Fidelis, Michelle joined the Clayton Christensen Institute as a Senior Research Fellow of Higher Education for nearly 2½ years. There, she also had the opportunity to write a book with him called, Education: Mastery, Modularization, and the Workforce Revolution. [9:38] Michelle’s experience working with Clayton on their book together. [10:57] Tom reflects on a past experience with Clay and Michelle shares an important lesson that she learned through working with him. [13:16] After Christensen Institute, Michelle did another three-year stint at Strada, a non-profit impact fund in Indianapolis. [13:50] About Michelle’s role at Strada and how it led to her writing her new book, Long Life Learning. [15:53] At Strada, Michelle had the opportunity to interview hundreds of people. Was this specific to Long Life Learning or was it more for the R&D center at Strada? [17:00] Young people today are not only going to live longer but they’re also going to experience more change in their lifetimes than previous generations. The old model of education and work is already becoming obsolete. As Michelle shares in her book, we need to begin thinking about long life learning. [20:22] With this knowledge, is it becoming less critical to make a decision about where you go to college immediately after high school? [22:44] Would Michelle agree or disagree with the sentiment Ryan Craig expressed in his 2018 book, A New U, that unless you can get a free or subsidized education at a selective university you really should think about a hard sprint to a good first job as an entry point to an earn-and-learn ladder? [25:58] Does Michelle foresee Gen Zrs having careers somewhat resembling her own? I.e. taking a “tour of duty” approach? [28:17] What are the business models for long life learning going to be? [32:03] What advice do people need to make good decisions about what to learn next? [37:24] Does Michelle see AI making it easier for us to learn in the direction we point to? [40:28] Is Michelle optimistic about adaptive learning? [42:17] Some of the other ways Michelle sees AI aiding us in the future. [43:58] Does AI have the potential to make hiring more equitable? Or is Michelle concerned that more inequity will surface in AI-driven systems? [46:11] As a long-life learner herself, how does Michelle continue her journey every day in “getting smart?” [45:56] Would Michelle agree that Louise Glück was a good choice for the 2020 Nobel Prize in Literature? [47:53] Tom plugs Michelle’s book, Long Life Learning. [48:23] Tom thanks Michelle for joining the podcast. The truth is racism still exists. It exists in our subconscious - as a memory in our bodies from our ancestry. It exists from past traumas of our ancestors still yearning to be healed. It exists in our conditioning, our society and how many of us were raised... Many people have been in denial of its existence, but with Trump taking office, what has seemed to be under the surface for many has only become more and more real. People of color have seen and experienced it all along, and thankfully, more and more of us have been waking up to this truth. Not long after I set the intention to further educate myself about white privilege and racism, I received an email out of the blue from a friend I haven't talked to in years ...connecting me to Michelle and her work. So what can we do? I sat down to talk with Michelle Johnson to learn more about privilege, oppression and racism and her unique approach of integrating the teachings of yoga with social justice. I am so grateful to share her wisdom with you all today.   “Racism is not just impacting people of color. The system of oppression is not just harming people of color, it's harming all of us because we are connected. We’re just not conditioned to see that connection.” In this episode we discussed: Michelle's story: What it was like growing up and feeling different and not fitting in Michelle's definitions of privilege and oppression How Michelle integrates healing and embodiment into anti-racism trainings How to approach the discomfort, fear and emotional charge of race conversations About Michelle's new book, Skill in Action Actual steps we can take to create change in our world and way of being The role of speaking up on behalf of everyone even when we ourselves are not the oppressed Michelle's vision of hope and how she stays motivated in a world where there is still so much suffering and injustice “One must be connected with their breath to feel their body. A connection to the body allows one to feel their heart. A connection with the heart allows one to become clear about their values so that they may connect with their humanity. When one sees their own humanity and realizes that others are suffering around them they have the opportunity to connect with the oneness of all beings and our shared humanity. From the breath, body, heart and awareness of humanity, one must take action. No one can exist without taking action. Skill in Action.” ~ from Michelle's Book, Skill in Action: Radicalizing Your Yoga Practice to Create a Just World Stay in touch with Michelle: Michelle's Website Michelle's Book on Amazon From Michelle: I have a deep understanding of how trauma impacts the mind, body, spirit and heart. My awareness of the world through my experience as a black woman allows me to know, first hand how privilege and power operate. I understand the toll that oppression can take on individuals and the collective physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. I am a social justice warrior, empath, yoga teacher and practitioner and an intuitive healer. Whether in an anti-oppression training, yoga space, individual or group intuitive healing session, healing and wholeness are at the center of how I approach all of my work in the world. I've spent many years on the front lines of justice movements craving a space for healing through ritual, ceremony and sacred practice. While working in many non-profits with missions focused on justice I didn't find a space that centered healing as a tool to create justice. So, I created my own space and way of working. I create healing spaces in many different ways working with individuals and groups. I lead anti-racism trainings, yoga workshops focused on the intersection of justice and yoga and I offer intuitive healing sessions to support social justice workers, healers and activists who are on the front lines and struggling with how to sustain themselves as they do their good work in the world. I have a background as a licensed clinical social worker and I have been teaching yoga for ten years. I began my own teacher training in 2014 and recently wrote a book about yoga and justice, Skill in Action: Radicalizing Your Yoga Practice to Create a Just World. I inspire change that allows people to stand in their humanity and wholeness in a world that fragments most of us. There are myriad of ways to work with me. I hope to support you on your healing journey and path towards wholeness in whatever capacity allows you to live your fullest life.   Podcast by Meredith Rom - Rising Women Leaders | Spirituality | Personal Growth | Yoga | Entrepreneurship -  Personal growth, intuition, stories, voice, women, yoga, feminine leadership, spirituality, online business, and meditation

Hello and welcome to episode 61 of The Couragemakers Podcast! This week I'm chatting to Michelle Madrid-Branch and we're really diving into claiming our own identities and owning our stories. Michelle is an author, speaker, life wellness coach, and global advocate for women and children, living in Santa Barbara, CA, with her husband, children , three dogs and a bunny. Michelle advocates on behalf of women and children who are marginalized and left feeling isolated in our society. Michelle is happiest when using her life journey in an effort to serve others and help others rise up from their pain. She is currently in the process of writing her fourth book. In this episode, Michelle shares her journey, from being born in the UK and placed in the foster care system to being adopted by an American family and learning to untangle labels she had been given and finding her own identity. We really explore the power of owning your story, moving beyond past stories that keep us stuck and changing our lens so we can start to reclaim our lives. Michelle shares what inspires her to work with and advocate on behalf of children without families and the lessons she has learned along the way. She also shares how she has found that every one of us is uniquely qualified to bring something positive into the world, and invites listeners to explore their own unique strengths and gifts. We also have a great conversation about how forgiveness can free us and take us out of our own prisons and how sustainability is key when it comes to building a life you love. This episode is a great reminder that you do have the courage to find your own identity, and to own that identity because no one can give it to you. I loved hearing Michelle's story and how openly she shares about how she found the courage to find the magic in the mess and be who she is. I know you're going to love this episode. What mistakes you may be making that are tarnishing your reputation and straining your relationships with others. We will also discuss how to keep relationships with (friends, family, romantic partners & colleagues) strong with technology. How can we use technology appropriately. About Emily’s book: Being a teen girl isn’t easy—so learning skills to feel confident is key! In Express Yourself, psychotherapist Emily Roberts will teach you how to communicate effectively and feel assertive in any situation. Whether it’s online or at school, with friends, parents, bullies, cliques or crushes—any tricky situation life throws yours way. Many teen girls feel pressured to be nice, rather than assert their opinions. They may fear being called bossy or pushy when speaking their mind or offering a different point of view. If you have ever stopped yourself from expressing your opinion, you know how bad it can feel afterward. Don’t let yourself fall into that same trap over and over. Your thoughts and feelings matter just as much as everyone else’s—you just need to find your voice. Express Yourself offers skills based in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help you create positive interactions with others and deal with difficult emotions that can arise from bullying or dealing with mean girls. The book also provides easy-to-use strategies that will boost your self-esteem and confidence, and you’ll discover tons of assertive communication skills you can use every day, including how to speak up when you are upset, asking for what you want in a clear assertive manner, and coping when intense emotions threaten to take over and sabotage your relationships. In our modern world of social media and texting, strong communication skills are needed more than ever. This book will not only give you the tools needed to speak up in everyday or difficult situations, but it will also provide powerful advice for effectively communicating in the digital world. About Michelle and Kelly’s book: Communication is an essential life skill that every teen must learn. Based on the New Harbinger classic, Messages, this book will teach you the necessary skills—such as assertiveness, active listening, and compassion—to become an effective communicator for life. In an age of social media, texting, and ever-evolving technology, it’s easy to forget how to engage in real, face-to-face communication, a critical skill for your future success! As you become more connected to your smartphone and the internet, your ability to connect in person may diminish. But technology doesn’t replace the need for effective communication skills. In fact, successful personal and professional relationships are dependent upon connecting with people face-to-face. Communication Skills for Teens provides the guidance you need to become a better communicator and succeed in all areas of life. You’ll also learn tons of essential life skills, including active listening, assertiveness, clarifying language, the art of an apology, compassion, interviewing skills, family communication, and more. Each chapter focuses on one key aspect of communication, offers a real teen’s perspective, and includes practical exercises to help you apply what you’ve learned in the real world—away from your computer and smartphone screens. By following the practical, skills-based tips in each chapter of this book, you’ll learn powerful communication techniques to last a lifetime.

Michelle Schultz is a 23-year-old singer/song-writer from Delta, BC. She is a classically trained pianist, receiving her grade 10 certificate in the Royal Conservatory of Music at the age of 17. A major part of Michelle's music career has been singing national anthems for several sporting and charity events. Michelle sings regularly for several teams in the BCHL and WLA, as well as for the WHL Vancouver Giants. In January 2014, Michelle was chosen to be one of the official singers for the NLL Vancouver Stealth lacrosse team. She has further sung for the AHL Abbotsford Heat, CFL BC Lions, Vancouver Whitecaps and NHL Vancouver Canucks. Other special events include fundraisers that feature Canuck Alumni players, the AAA High School Boys Basketball Provincials, Cops for Cancer fundraisers, benefits for the PoCoMo Youth Services Society, and many more. Aside from anthems, Michelle has performed at several local bars, open mics, and talent shows/competitions, some of which include The Terminal Pub, Joe's Apartment, The Roxy, and much more. She has further sung during intermissions at many BCHL and WLA games, including doing acoustic sets of originals and covers with an accompanying guitar player. Michelle has worked as a sessional vocalist for many local artists by singing harmonies, background vocals, as well as feature lead parts on these recordings. She is currently in the process of recording her debut album. Michelle further maintains active community involvement, especially through fundraising. In 2012, Michelle raised over $3500 for Cops for Cancer (while running for the title of Miss BC 2012), over $2000 for the BC Children's Hospital Child Run since 2010, and has also volunteered and raised money for BC Cancer Research on several occasions. In her spare time, Michelle enjoys modeling, baking, staying active and spending time with her family and friends.About Michelle's Music:Over the last several years, Michelle has been working towards developing and finding her own “sound” within music. In March 2012, Michelle released her first pop single, “This Time”. However, shortly after this, Michelle auditioned to be the new lead singer of local rock band Innocent Bystander (one of the “gold” winners in the 2008 Fox Vancouver Seeds competition). After auditioning 22 other singers, the band finally stumbled upon Michelle, and they were eager for her to join their project. Although the members are no longer together, they were able to write a catalogue of originals, many of which Michelle continues to perform today. At this point in time, Michelle is no longer performing rock music, as she felt this genre was not a good representation of who she is as a person and musician. She is now taking her many influences (which include Michelle Branch, Carrie Underwood, Shania Twain, and Avril Lavigne, to name a few) and creating music that can be classified within a pop-rock-country genre. Many of her songs are written about personal life experiences, where she strives to write lyrics that connect with her listeners. Michelle has further received several comments on how she is able to tell a story through her music, and that her listeners are able to relate their own experiences. Even if only one person is able connect with each song, Michelle considers this to be a success.
