PR is the Best Way to Get More Visibility For Your Business and to Control What Others Think, Say, and Feel about Your Business. Here's How to Successfully Pitch Your Story. About Michele Glogovac Michelle Glogovac is THE podcast matchmaker! Not only is she the host of the My Simplified Life Podcast, but the Founder and CEO of The MSL Collective, a PR agency helping others get featured interviews on other podcasts and traditional media outlets. As a podcast host and PR agent, she knows the ins and outs of how to successfully pitch your story and get more visibility to connect with a larger audience. Think About How to Be a Great Podcast Guest Before Thinking About How to Successfully Pitch Your Story Michelle is a previous guest on The Second Phase Podcast. In episode 53 Michelle shared tips on being a great guest and following podcast guest etiquette. As Michelle mentions again, the key to being a good guest is to remember to be authentic and that the interview isn't about you. Yes, you have knowledge and information to share, but it isn't about you, it's about giving, that will land you the interview. It isn't about promoting your business or book it's about giving to the host and their audience. Michelle used the analogy of a dinner party to relate to how to successfully pitch your story. Your pitch is going to be the hostess gift. Then you are going to be a good guest, listen to episode 53 to learn how, and then you thank your host. Think about the fact you wouldn't go to a friend's home without a gift and it's the same concept when you are a guest on a podcast, bring the gift of your knowledge to share with the host and her/her listeners. Robyn reminded that a personal brand is what other people think say and feel about you. Similarly, when you pitch to be a guest on a podcast, you want to control the perception that the host will have of you when reading the pitch. The more you offer to give, the better the pitch will be received. How to Successfully Pitch Your Story - What Goes Into The Pitch During the first part of your pitch, make a human connection and share that you've listened to episodes of the show and how you relate. Show the host that you care about them and their audience. Really know who you are pitching to. Do not copy and paste a pitch from one person to another. Some items may be the same, for example, topics that you will speak to, but there must be an original, unique component for each pitch. Relate to the host what you've gotten out of their previous episodes, and tell them how they resonate with you. It's about building an authentic human connection. If you are wondering how to successfully pitch your story, take note that it's important to express that you genuinely want to be on their show and make it about them, not you. Include topics and tools that you are an expert on. Include features you've been on if you are a host of a show, etc., and hyperlink them. You don't want to give the host any additional work. Make it simple for them to find more information should they need it. Most hosts have jobs outside of their podcast so reviewing pitches takes time away from their jobs and the podcast so if you give them homework to do, they will say no, they don't have time to chase information about you. Don't pitch to a host who does the same work you do. Be sure that you do your homework and be very specific about what the host and their audience will learn and gain from you. Include links to demonstrate why your topics are pertinent and how you are an expert. The Things a Successful Pitch Includes How to Successfully Pitch Your Story for a Podcast Guest Interview Relate to the host. Look at past episodes. Tell them why you liked it, how you related to it and why you felt connected to this show and this host. Don't just look at their show, look at their website and Instagram. Get to know the host and really get to know them. Make sure that the host is accepting guests or is it a solo show. Include some topics that you can speak to. Select three or four that are really applicable to this show. Always include a link to your website. If you are a podcast host, include a link to your show and include links to your most recent interviews on other podcasts. Include a brief bio, a few short sentences, and attach your one-sheet. Thank the host for the opportunity to pitch. Your follow-ups should be 2 to three weeks out and they should be very short. The final follow-up should state that this is the final time I am following up. Yes, podcast hosts are planning, but it is much more relaxed and not time-sensitive like traditional media. How to Successfully Pitch Your Story to a Traditional Media Outlet This pitch is going to be very short, very brief, only 200 words. The pitch will not go into a lot of detail about you or your client. It has to relate to the journalist. Journalists are mostly on Twitter. Follow them and engage with them so that they will recognize you. Most online entrepreneurs are on Instagram. Let the journalist know that you've read their recent articles. These pitches must be relatable for current events. Plan ahead. You don't want to pitch for Father's Day a week before. When pitching a topic, provide research to show why the subject is relevant and why the journalist would want to cover the story. Provide stats and data and hyperlink them so that the journalist has all of the data at their fingertips. Follow up is 2 to 3 days because it is timely. How to Successfully Pitch Your Story for Help A Reporter Out (HARO) HARO is a great resource for finding opportunities to pitch. Reporters will post what they are looking for and a list will drop into your email inbox after you subscribe. The reporters will specify pertinent details, deadlines, and requirements. After reading the post, you simply click to respond to the reporter with your pitch. Oftentimes, the quickest pitch seals the deal. Don't delay and pitch right away. Types of PR HARO is reactive PR. You are reacting to what someone else is looking for versus being proactive which is making a recommendation for the kind of news you want to share. A similar platform to HARO is Qwoted. You can only send 3 of your pitches per month for free and then you will be charged. Note that you do not send attachments with this type of pitch, you use hyperlinks to your one sheet. The pitch is brief. The journalist will vet the responses they get, and then come back with more questions. How to Successfully Pitch Your Story Using A One-Sheet A One-Sheet is also called a pitch or media kit. It should have everything important about you, everything you want the podcast host or journalist to know. A One-Sheet is branded to your business and should include hyperlinks. Things to include in a One-Sheet Full bio Logo Headshot Website All of the topics you are an expert on The cover art of all podcasts you've been featured on with hyperlinks to the episodes Logos and hyperlinks to any other outlet you've been featured on It's really everything there is about you in one spot with all of the links embedded so that the person can go anywhere to find out more about you. The one-sheet really showcases and highlights the key things about you. One-sheets should be updated on a regular basis as more interviews occur. It is forever revolving, keep it fresh. Michelle uses Canva to create her One Sheet template. Canva makes is easy to hyperlink the graphics included on the One Sheet. Additional Tips on How to Successfully Pitch Your Story Engage with hosts that you eventually want to pitch to. Same thing with journalists. Retweet and share content. The key is to become recognizable by the host or journalists so that when you do pitch and show up in their inbox, they know who you are and are more likely to engage with you and say yes to your pitch. Be proactive and engage before you even start pitching. Using Twitter as a Resource to Successfully Pitch Your Story Share and add a comment, create lists of who you want to engage with, use Twitter chats, there are so many options for sharing and engaging on Twitter. It is easier to grow a following on Twitter unlike Instagram, where people hem and haw about following others, or they follow and unfollow. Twitter now has Twitter Spaces which is like Clubhouse rooms. Learn More About Your Host, Robyn Graham, Click HERE. To learn about The Brand Marketing Insider by Robyn Graham, click HERE. Tonight's special guest is Michelle Goetsch from Los Angeles, California, a child abuse survivor who shares that she was 6 years old the first time saw semen. "My step-father took off my underwear," she says, "rubbed his penis against me and masturbated until ejaculation." Michelle goes on, "I was isolated as the abuse progressed to daily molestation. By the age of 10, I was severely depressed. I prayed that God would take me in my sleep. She says, "We moved to Oregon; and, for a couple years, lived far off the grid. I was isolated as the abuse progressed to daily molestation. By the age of 10, I was severely depressed. When I was 11, Children's Services came to my school to interview me, but I denied abuse out of fear. Later, after my step-father was arrested for beating my mother (again) a doctor suspected I had been abused. I nervously acknowledged the 5 years of daily abuse." She's getting better now. "My healing journey began when I was given the opportunity to put him in jail long term, and keep him from abusing another child. My testimony in court led to a conviction of 1st degree Child Molestation, Sodomy and 1st degree Rape of a child under 12. I've been in therapy at different times throughout my life; and, upon discussing my childhood, have been told that my mental health is remarkable. Yet, I have made many unhealthy life choices that (in retrospect) were definitely driven by the abuse." As Michelle says, "The abuse need not define us. However, we neither can, nor should, pretend it isn't part of who we are. Only by embracing all parts of ourselves can we truly heal and have anything to bring to the table."
Michelle McBane is the Managing Director at Standup Ventures, a seed-stage fund investing in women led Canadian technology startups. On this episode, we discuss where Canadian VC dollars went in 2020, how COVID-19 affected the industry, and how VC funds like StandUp Ventures are leading the way by investing in the next generation of women entrepreneurs. Solving the gender gap in technology Although there is immense wealth being generated in the venture backed company sector, recent studies have shown that only 10% of cap table holdings are by women. According to Michelle, diverse teams consistently outperform homogenous teams, and if you have a diverse pool of talent around the table, you're going to attract a variety of different deals that you otherwise may not have. When it comes to women-led ventures, having good role models and promoting mentorship are key to success According to Michelle, funders are used to investing in companies where they see themselves, and can relate to the story. Building a company is rife with challenges, some of them specific to female founders, and the value of a prior experience can't be discounted. As Michelle explains, there are a lot more women stepping up to fill the role of mentor within the industry. In venture capitalism, you are always learning Whether you’re a serial founder, a funder, or just stepping into the field, according to Michelle, you will learn every day. No day is the same, no deal is the same, and you will get to learn about the makeup and functionality of exciting new businesses every day. It’s a field that promotes constant growth, education, taking risks and embracing the unpredictable. CIBC Innovation Banking is a trusted financial partner to entrepreneurs and investors. As Michelle explains, it’s been a shitty day for her, so you know that the orange juice is truly optional for this week’s episode. Luckily for us, that doesn’t stop her and Suzanne from putting together another entertaining episode for us all to enjoy, and this time around they are looking at the concept of ‘random acts of kindness’ and the impact they make in our world. Michelle begins by sharing the reason for her rotten day, and then goes on to explain her love of what she calls synchronicities in our world that then leads her into the topic of National Random Acts of Kindness Day. She provides some examples from her own life which support the idea that ‘no good deed goes unpunished’, and then she and Suzanne explore the state of their ‘crowns’, Suzanne’s favorite quotes about kindness, and Robb’s acts of kindness. They finish by discussing the random acts of kindness which others have done for them, the feeling that comes with performing such acts, respecting people’s feelings about COVID protection, and the true meaning of kindness. What starts out as a shitty day for Michelle evolves into a most heartwarming and humorous episode whose sincere message is one that we can all take to heart as it inspires us all to ‘do something kind every single day’. Episode Highlights: · Synchronicities · National Random Acts of Kindness Day · Michelle’s examples of ‘no good deed goes unpunished’ · Michelle and Suzanne’s ‘crowns’ · Suzanne’s favorite quotes about kindness · Robb’s random acts of kindness · The random acts of kindness that people have done for Suzanne and Michelle · The feeling that comes with performing acts of kindness · Respecting people’s feelings about COVID protection · The true meaning of an act of kindness Quotes: “It was one of those signs from the universe that we were on the right track.” “It does seem every time I try to do something nice, it goes wrong…it always comes back to bite me in the ass.” “That is another star in your crown in Heaven.” “You can lose stars…your crown might not be as heavy as you think it is.” “How unexpected was that remark?” “The best type of random acts of kindness are the ones nobody knows about.” “We have done something kind whether they like it or not.” “I swear, the guy falls into the shit, and he is celebrated!” “He gets accolades, I get the onions.” “That had to have happened 30 years ago, and I still remember that random act of kindness.” “You feel like it’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever done for you when you’re in a situation and someone bails you out of it.” “You choose to make the difference for someone today.” “We are paper towel people, anyway.” “I always pay for the next person.” “Kindness does not have to involve money.” “Whatever we do, we have to do it with kindness.” “It was so perfect in that moment.” “That is family taking care of family. Michelle Covey is the Vice President of Partnerships at GS1 US, a company that improves supply chain visibility and efficiency through GS1 Standards. GS1 US is also responsible for issuing Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs) and Universal Product Codes (UPCs) to brands. In her role at GS1 US, Michelle manages external partner relationships and programs designed to support efficient and accurate GS1 Standards implementation. Prior to joining GS1 US, Michelle worked as a Project Manager for both GXS and Inovis, where she handled operational efficiency and strategy roadmap initiatives. Michelle has a proven track record in product analysis, market launch, leadership, and more in the services and software industries. In this episode… Why are UPCs and GTINs so important for Amazon sellers? According to Michelle Covey of GS1 US, not only do these codes help brands ensure compliance with Amazon's ever-changing policies, but they also help customers accurately identify an online product's information. Because of this, UPCs and GTINs are essential for providing a valuable customer experience on Amazon and other e-commerce platforms. However, in order to reap their benefits, it is important that sellers obtain these codes from the right source. Buying a UPC or GTIN from eBay or other third-party sellers could result in stolen, recycled, or fraudulent codes. As Michelle says, the best way to avoid any negative impacts to your product listings is to seek help from GS1 US. Michelle Covey, the Vice President of Partnerships at GS1 US, joins James Thomson in this week's episode of the Buy Box Experts podcast to talk about the ins and outs of Universal Product Codes (UPCs) and Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs) on Amazon. They discuss the benefits of obtaining these codes as a private label seller, how GS1 US works to remove hijacked UPC codes, and Michelle's thoughts on the future of innovation and standardization on Amazon. Stay tuned.
Business exit plan preparation and adding value to your business What You Will Learn: How Michelle’s ability to close deals led her to becoming regional vice president at Xerox after just six months at the company Why 70% of businesses which have been operating for 10 years or longer will go out of business because they haven’t adapted to how consumers buy products and services today How Michelle dipped her toe into working in franchise development while still working at Xerox, and how she sold 100 franchises in six months How Michelle transitioned her expertise from selling franchises to selling businesses and helping owners develop a business exit plan Why many established businesses aren’t salable because they are too dependent upon the business owner What common mistakes business owners make that can end up hurting their company’s value or salability down the road Why preparing your business for sale requires you to ensure that six P’s are in place: people, product, processes, proprietary, patrons and profits What important lessons can be learned from explosive brands like Amazon, McDonalds and Apple that can be applied to businesses of any industry and size What surprising systems, relationships and other assets add value to your company and make it more attractive to potential buyers Why profits are never the problem hurting your company’s value but are a symptom of the real problems Business exit plan preparation and adding value to your business Failure to prepare for your eventual exit from your company is a common mistake. This poor planning makes it much more difficult to sell your business when you’re ready to leave, and it has a negative impact on the value of your company when you do eventually sell. In this episode of Onward Nation, business buying, growing, fixing and selling authority Michelle Seiler Tucker shares tips, strategies and actionable steps to help you prepare a business exit plan that will add value to your company now and get it ready for sale in the future. The importance of a solid business exit plan Here’s a surprising and troubling statistic for you: 70% of businesses that have been operating for 10 years or longer will go out of business, either because they haven’t taken steps to adapt to consumers’ modern shopping habits, or because they have failed to take the steps necessary to get the business ready for sale. Most business owners plan on eventually exiting their business, either by transferring ownership to a family member or through selling the business at retirement. However, if you wait until you’re ready to leave the business to begin getting it ready for sale, you’re going to have a lot of uphill work to do. Instead, Michelle suggests you begin creating a business exit plan now, so that you’re able to “exit rich” when the time comes. According to Michelle, there are “six P’s” that determine how valuable a business is to potential buyers: People Products Processes Proprietary assets Patrons Profits Getting those six P’s in order is crucial for ensuring that your business is saleable. As Michelle explained, a dentist who owns a dental practice but is the only dentist in the practice is going to have a difficult time exiting and selling the business, because the dentist is the business. So, the dentist would need to add people, in this case other dentists, to the business to make it more attractive to buyers. Look to big brands for inspiration Michelle says that companies like McDonalds and Amazon have a lot to teach owners of businesses of any size or industry about creating a successful business exit plan and how to add value to a business to make it more attractive at sale. For example, McDonald’s isn’t really a fast food chain; it’s a $30 billion real estate company. McDonald’s isn’t in the business of selling hamburgers. The company’s real business is owning real estate that it leases to franchisees. Amazon started out as an online bookstore. But as Michelle explained, the company realized it excelled in fulfilment, and when it leaned into that strength and branched out beyond books, Amazon became one of the most valuable companies in the world. By asking yourself the right questions, leaning into your strengths, and getting the six P’s in place today, you can make your business much more valuable and attractive to potential buyers in the future. What makes a great coffee? When we talk about food, drinks, and other agricultural products, our metric of goodness is typically based on visceral experience. We can taste it, smell it, and otherwise perceive markers of quality through our five senses. In coffee, quality is also equated with the experimental and the rare—a coffee processed in a new way, or a highly-sought-after varietal, is imbued with value. But what if we were to shift our understanding of goodness, and what makes it? What if, for instance, we prized a coffee that was sustainably sourced? I don’t just mean that the coffee was sustainably grown: I mean that the coffee, throughout the lifetime of not just the bean itself but the relationships built between buyer and seller, was bought and sold in a way that was fair and equitable to all involved. Coffee is an incredibly risky plant to harvest. It is highly dependent on the environment, so a late rainfall or unseasonably warm weather can wreak havoc on the flavor of a bean. For most coffee professionals, this isn’t news. But what might be revelatory is thinking about how to redistribute the risk involved in growing coffee across the supply stream. Much of the risk in growing coffee is assumed by the farmer. If a crop fails or a coffee underperforms, that almost always translates to a farmer getting paid less—or not getting paid at all. Michelle Stoler works for Shared Source, a green coffee importer, purchaser of parchment coffee, and exporter who works in Portland, Oregon. She thinks a lot about risk, and how it might be shared. In this episode, we explore what it means for more actors within the coffee supply stream to assume risk, and the good that can come from taking that unique burden off farmers. We also talk about the coffee industry’s obsession with pricing—not just paying farmers more, but its focus on where the money goes. If we pay a farmer a set price for coffee, why do we need to justify that price by pointing to the investment they made in their community? Why isn’t the work put into cultivating the coffee justification enough? After listening to this episode, I hope you take a moment to set your values, and to probe your own assumptions. What makes a coffee great? As Michelle points out, the default is to fall back on quality—but there are a million other ways to gauge, and reasons to buy, a coffee. By setting clear values, more roasters and importers can help assume the risk that we almost singlehandedly put on farmers, which is unfair, unjust, and a relic of the colonial roots of coffee’s past.

This week, Tom is sitting down with author and advisor, Michelle Weise, to discuss her new book, Long Life Learning: Preparing for Jobs that Don't Even Exist Yet. Michelle is currently serving as an entrepreneur-in-residence and Senior Advisor at Imaginable Futures, a venture of The Omidyar Group. Michelle was formerly the Chief Innovation Officer at Strada Education Network’s Institute for the Future of Work, and Sandbox Collaborative, the innovation center of Southern New Hampshire University. She was also the co-author of Hire Education: Mastery, Modularization, and the Workforce Revolution, with Clayton Christensen. In this conversation, Tom and Michelle discuss her background in the arts and innovation; how and why she came to write her new book, Long Life Learning; what long life learning means to her; what she predicts to be the future of business models for long life learning; and her advice on how we can all make good decisions about what to learn next no matter where we are on our long life learning journey. Key Takeaways: [:10] About today’s episode with Michelle Weise. [:55] Tom Vander Ark welcomes Michelle to the podcast. [:59] Tom congratulates Michelle on her new book, Long Life Learning. [20:22] With this knowledge, is it becoming less critical to make a decision about where you go to college immediately after high school? [22:44] Would Michelle agree or disagree with the sentiment Ryan Craig expressed in his 2018 book, A New U, that unless you can get a free or subsidized education at a selective university you really should think about a hard sprint to a good first job as an entry point to an earn-and-learn ladder? [25:58] Does Michelle foresee Gen Zrs having careers somewhat resembling her own? I.e. taking a “tour of duty” approach? [28:17] What are the business models for long life learning going to be? It’s that time of year again! Michelle has been hard at work mapping out her and Jack’s plans and goals for 2021. Would you like a behind the scenes look at how a top landflipper is making decisions for the new year? She’ll give you a hint: it’s more than mechanics; there’s a lot of mindset involved. On the tactical, practical side of things, Michelle and Jack’s calendar has things like: events, goals of passive income/cash flow from land/rentals, key investments, new team members, new technology, new mentors they’re going to invest in, etc. But, in this episode of the podcast, she takes us deeper into the underlying mindset of setting those goals. We humans make our decisions based on pleasure and pain. We’re wired to move away from pain and our innate fear of loss and move toward pleasure and the possibility of gain. As Michelle plans, she’s had to mentally override certain decisions she hadn’t wanted to make because of fear. Today on the InFLOW podcast, Michelle gives us the inside scoop on: Her decision whether or not to renew with her mentor for $45,000. Investments that will help you meet goals faster with bigger impact. How to move beyond visualization to action, even when you’re afraid. How to rewire your brain to override fear. Jack and Michelle’s results speak for themselves, and now they’re committed to sharing what they’ve learned with others, so you can experience the same success and freedom in the new year and beyond. Today's second installment of the ‘Culture, Culture, Culture!' series answers the question ‘What can get in your way?' once you have determined your mission, vision, and values, as outlined in the first installment. It may come as no surprise that, given that culture is so closely related to the attitudes and actions of employees, people can be the biggest factor standing in your way of establishing a healthy, and ultimately productive one. In their discussion about this, Maria and Michelle begin by looking at the root of culture, where the problems can start, and both the ease and difficulty involved in establishing a positive culture when starting a business. Questions regarding the relative value of talent and culture fit, non-negotiables and shared vision, compromising on leadership positions, and how to effectively begin to change a culture are all examined as well. As Michelle often states, the role of the leader is paramount in determining culture, so she and Maria also examine the qualities necessary in this regard. While, as they say, culture is not ‘frickin' rocket science', there are certain complexities and variables which need to be considered and addressed, and that is precisely what these experts from REL Talent do with their trademark wisdom, humor and passion in today's fascinating episode. The Finer Details of This Episode: The root of culture Where the problems can start Establishing culture when starting a business Valuing talent or culture fit Non-negotiables and shared vision Compromising on a leadership position in a startup environment Michelle's biggest driver Beginning the conversation to change the culture What leaders need to consider regarding culture and helping staff through change The value of leaders being transparent with employees Quotes: “We're so sick of hearing people use the word 'culture', not because it isn't important, but because it's not frickin' rocket science!” “Just frickin' figure it out already!” “The individuals play a big role.” “Don't change your dream, but maybe change the way you get there.” “Culture happens in small groups, small departments.” “Your leader is either vocal and inspiring enough to drive that cultural direction, or the loudest person on the team will drive that direction for you.” “Purpose drives people.” “There's a level of authenticity that comes from just being honest.” “Sometimes you've got to tell people that the baby is ugly.” “One of the cornerstones of a successful leader is the ability to trust you.” “The humility and the openness that it takes to stand up and say, ‘That didn't serve us – we need to go in a different direction', I think there's power in that.” “When you give us the ability to find the solution, we are more likely to buy into the fact that that is the correct solution.” “Choose shitty leaders, get shitty results.” Show Links: REL Talent homepage: https://www.reltalent.com/
Today, Maria and Michelle welcome listeners to their October series of ‘The Best and Worst Of', where they share their own stories of the best and worst of what they have experienced in their roles over the years. As Michelle observes, stories can be effective for teaching, learning, blowing off steam, and to just have fun, and they have a lot of them, so buckle up! They will also be sharing these stories across all of their social media platforms, and you are invited to share your stories there as well, so don't be shy! This week, they look at the best and worst teams they've worked with, and Michelle begins with her example of one of her best and the weekly core group meetings that made it so effective. She shares the roles and expectations that were necessary to ensure success for these meetings, and then she and Maria explore the core characteristics that they have found are necessary for teams to be effective. Maria also recounts her best team experience, and, with Michelle's input, examines such topics as the tone set by the leader, being perceived as the favorite, training for leaders, and cliques. As you will discover from this first installment, this is going to be one interesting series - our hosts are ready to rant, so join in, rant right along with them, share your stories as well, and let them know what you think is important in making an effective team. The Finer Details of This Episode: An example of one of Michelle's best teams and their weekly core group meetings The expectations and roles for the leader and team members that made these meetings work so well What caused these meetings to stop working well Some core characteristics of the best teams The best team Maria worked with The tone set by the people leader Being perceived as being the favorite Leader training Cliques Quotes: “We would have these heated debates for 30-45 minutes…then we all got up and walked out of that room, as a united team.” “It couldn't be about attacking someone.” “It has to be driven by the leader.” “We started by being really clear about what the goal was or what the vision was.” “Eventually, we just stopped sharing, even in a constructive way, because it was exhausting to do it.” “We're really talking just constructive brainstorming on how to make stuff work.” “When something isn't working, you do have to say it.” “Everyone knew where they stood from a performance standpoint…there was no doubt in anyone's head.” “I would say transparency and collaboration was really huge for me on that team.” “If you fail, man, it is a long way to fall, and you hear about it forever.” “You're wondering why the hell everybody else gets away with doing half-assed work.” Show Links: REL Talent homepage: https://www.reltalent.com/
Michelle Niedziela is the Scientific Director and VP of Innovation at HCD Research, a marketing and consumer sciences company that applies neuroscience tools along with traditional market research methods to help their clients create better products, packaging, and communications for consumers. She also worked as a senior scientist at Johnson & Johnson, and still regularly contributes as a columnist on consumer perspectives to various publications. What are some things behavioral scientists should know more about neuroscience? When should they work together to enhance what they both do? Zarak, Erik, and Michelle tackle questions like these in today’s episode. As Michelle explains, there are a lot of misconceptions about neuroscience. When you conduct “fancy” neuroscience research, it doesn’t mean giving up good, old-fashioned surveys or qual and quant research methods. They must all be combined to better understand how the consumer experiences a product. “Measuring brain activity doesn’t really tell you anything unless you put it in context, and I feel like the behavioral science gives you that context,” she says. Other topics include cognitive flow, using neuroscience to increase the effectiveness of OTC (over-the-counter) drugs, and Zarak’s beard care product of choice. Spoiler Alert: it’s called Cowboy Magic.

Scott, Karl, and Michelle listen to and discuss Johann Sebastian Bach's Prelude and Fugue in C Major, BWV 846-847. It is the first prelude and fugue in the first book of The Well-Tempered Clavier, a series of 48 preludes and fugues by the composer. What is a fugue? As Michelle points out, a fugue's purpose is, "to reveal, or to play, the exact same melody in all of the different predetermined voice parts." To Karl, Bach's Fugue is "like a conversation between four people.” Bach was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier is instrumentally indifferent, eliciting a universal appeal. The shortcomings of the keyboard instruments of his time meant that he looked to instruments like the harpsichord and clavichord as kinds of “universal” instruments. After all, the instrument for the home was, in Germany at the time, the clavichord. The trio first listens to a version by Friedrick Gulda on the clavichord. Later in the podcast, they listen to another version by Martha Goldstein, also performed on the clavichord. Tune in to hear more music and ideas, brought to you by Online Great Books.
As Michelle & Jacob meet through a glass door, they talk about what they have been watching and reading since the quarantine began.
This week, Michelle, Scott, and Karl listen to the Prelude Op. 28, No. 4 by Frédéric Chopin in E minor. We are listening to the Nino Gvetadze version which you can access here. As Michelle points out, "This is the clearest example of what happens when you put notes together and you just change them little by little." In other words? Harmony. Harmony has the capacity to elevate a piece of music from common and predictable to challenging and sophisticated. Whether or not you believe harmony to be its own form of rhetoric, Karl reminds us, "Being able to know what someone is doing makes your peaks higher.” Tune in to hear more music and ideas, brought to you by Online Great Books.
Hi everyone! Today on the show we have Michelle Dickinson. An author, a TEDx speaker, and Mental Health Strategist. What a pleasure it was to speak with Michelle. On top of talking about the current global pandemic, Michelle and I discuss mental health, how to deal with mental illness in life as well as in the workplace, and how open conversation is the solution. As Michelle explains beautifully: stigma cannot exist where there is open communication. I think that is brilliant. Happy listening! The One Person You Need to Forgive If You're Ever Going to Recover from Your Toxic Relationship - What happens when you've been wronged by a narcissist in any type of toxic relationship and you want to move on? How do you let it go - get on with your life - and make sure it doesn't happen again? There are so many different things you can do - but one of the most important parts is that you need to forgive one of the parties involved. And I'm not talking about the toxic narcissist here - I'm talking about YOU. Yesterday, one of our fellow survivors, Michelle, left a comment that led me to this topic today. She wanted to know, "How to begin to forgive myself for allowing decades of ab use?" You need to forgive yourself for attracting them into your life - so you don't have to continue to carry the burden around and so that you don't repeat the same experience with another person. As Michelle mentioned in her comment, you forgive yourself for ALLOWING it to happen - not for causing it to happen. Shine Buzz Live! In this episode I am Interviewing Michelle A. Dowell who is a Metaphysical Minister, Family constellation facilitator and Clinical Hypnotist. Michelle is specialised in healing the Mother wound and she tells us how she became interested in this topic and how she now works with women to help them move forward in their lives and heal past traumas and the female line in their families. As Michelle says, issues in relationships, finances, career, fertility, in parenting. All kinds of ways that our adult life is affected or influenced by the way that we were mothered, whether we were mothered really well, whether we were under mothered or whether we were over mothered. Michelle has been the first one to go through this process as her mum was an alcoholic, she was a foster child, married at 14 and had her first child at 15, had another baby and by 19 she was divorced. Despite wanting to be with her children, she was unable to take care again and therefore, although in a different way and for different reasons, the story repeated for her children. She became a clinical hypnotist. It was the book “It didn’t start with you” from Mark Wolynn that brought Michelle down the path of family mapping, family constellation and healing the mother wound, through a series of other signs along the way. Michelle explain what exactly means working on the mother wound, what are family constellation and the impact that working on this part of yourself can have on shifting your life for the better. We talk about being under mothered and being over mothered. How important is to uncover the hidden narratives that run underneath our lives and the trauma connected to it that sits in the body and keeps us stuck. Michelle tells us how often times her client go to see her for issues related to their personal or professional life not really knowing there is a connection to their first years of life and their relationship with their mother. That allow you understand the family mapping better and understand yourself better and start the healing process. As we progress in the episode Michelle talks about how to release stored emotions and traumas, gives tips and suggestions to start looking into this topic. Michelle and I talked about so many topics that are relevant for every woman. That you believe you have/had the best mum or not. Understanding what our mum felt, what she went through as child, how she was mothered, will help us heal the core relationship with her but also understand how this has affected us in all areas of our life. It will be possible to see how we can break the patterns and finally live our best life and heal our feminine line, way back to our ancestors. It was the first day of school for Michelle Kositzke’s daughter and Michelle doesn’t have fond memories of the day. As Michelle and her daughter were walking into school, another mother and daughter were walking in. The other mother verbally judged Michelle behind her back. Michelle’s daughter heard everything and expressed her confusion. Michelle knew she had two choices: she could have exploded on the other woman OR she could use the situation as a teachable moment. She chose the latter. Michelle and Jill Devine talked about the incident and how important it is for women to lift one another up and share in one another’s successes instead of putting one another down. They also discussed the importance of raising their children to be kind, give compliments, be inclusive, and always be true to their self. Four lovely ladies for the price of 2!? Thats right, this week we are discussing duos. As Michelle talks about Gabriela and Monika Irimia; better known as the Cheeky Girls, and Grace tells of Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland; two women who raced one another around the world.
Episode 106: “Treating the Smoke and Not the Fire” is a conversation about a new documentary, Cracked Up—an emotionally arresting, trauma-informed look at the lifelong consequences when we fail to protect a child. In Cracked Up, filmmaker Michelle Esrick chronicles Saturday Night Live star Darrell Hammond’s journey from childhood trauma, through decades of misdiagnoses of its effects, toward hope and healing. The duo talk about what drove them to make the film and how they hope it will help change the conversation about child abuse. As Michelle says, too often society treats the smoke—things like addiction and mental illness—and not the fire—the very experiences that caused them in the first place.Topics in this episode:· What drove them to make Cracked Up (2:20)· What they didn’t know at the start of the journey (4:34)· Trauma is when your reality is not seen or known (8:04)· Telling a survivor’s story with respect and without causing them further harm (9:36)· A hunger to call out the bad guy, and to be believed (12:14)· The consequences of trusting your own reality (14:23)· The haunted house—the shock a simple thought can cause (23:18)· Trauma, substance use, and addiction: Treating the smoke and not the fire (28:25)· The investment in disbelief. Surrogacy. Homeschool. One of the things I love about this podcast are the unique people that I get to meet and interview on the show. The purpose of this podcast is to share these stories.Michelle's story is one of these.Michelle Whitaker is a 29 year old wife, YouTube content creator and homeschool mom of 1. Michelle is married to her wife of 8 years and they have a 7 year old daughter. Michelle’s YouTube channel documents her family’s true homeschooling journey and her raw and transparent road to becoming a surrogate mother. In this episode of the podcast, Michelle shares with me: Why they chose to take their daughter out of school and homeschool. Why it was important to find a homeschool coop that was diverse, accepting and supportive. Her Surrogacy journey why she chose to become a surrogate mom the process and the challenges that it involves, how they communicate this to their daughter. What I took away from this interview is how each family's story is unique to them but at the same time we are all so similar. As for the homeschool journey, we learn to make it our own. For example, I am an unschooling parent and Michelle an eclectic homeschooler. Our home education may look different, but I still learn from her example. As Michelle says, "There are so many different homeschool choices and styles today as well as backgrounds. Doing what works for you is all the matters. We just focus on us."I asked Michelle what advice she would offer to parents. Michelle suggests that whether you decide to homeschool or not, it's important to get involved. Learn about what is happening in your schools. Attend the board Meetings. Raise your voice. Then do what works for you. Michelle Beber’s own personal experience with After Death Communications was foreign to her. Nearing 50, an emotional breakdown put her on a path of spiritual awakening starting with her life-changing after-death communication or ADC from her mom. ADC is a direct and spontaneous communication from a deceased loved one, importantly without the use of a medium. Researching signs from deceased loved ones Michelle discovered the book, Hello From Heaven, which helped her to understand how we remain connected to those who have died. As Michelle discovered there are different forms of communication, which can appear in different ways, explaining this during the podcast. ADC is not strange it is a real experience. By now with her experiences and research, Michelle went on to write her first manuscript entitled My Mommy Is a Butterfly, a picture book to help children cope with grief. But the universe blocked her path to publishing it for several years and for reasons unknown to her. During those years, she developed a strong connection to the angelic realm and wrote the poetry for Angels, Angels, Everywhere and in 2014 published the book, which became an award winner. Now in 2018, at 62, Michelle’s first manuscript My Mommy Is a Butterfly will be released in late August! For more about Michelle go to her website michellebeber.com. Toward the end of the Podcast Michelle offers 4 tips for listeners: By asking the angels for help this can dramatically improve your life and lead you to your life purpose. Open your heart and mind to afterdeath communications, and this will prove that your loved ones are always with you. Never let your age stand in the way of your dreams! Open your heart, listen to your soul, and be your unique self!
The fabulous @eleytherius. You may know her as Dr Johnston, as a long term LIFTL contributor, as a Mega-FOAM performer, as a some-time feline choreographer or as a Fabulous Female of FOAM®. She sings, she dances and she writes books. She is a creative powerhouse. She is an educator extraordinaire. But we’re not going to talk about that. We’re going to talk about Dustfall; a new novel by someone who you can relate to, somewhat works in critical care, someone that has not much more time to spare than you do. Michelle has written a book. It took years. Of course she can write, I am just learning. Check her blog here; http://michellejohnston.com.au/category/dustfall/ It would have to be a labour of love? It was. Love of words. Love of reading. Love of the classics. As Michelle puts it; “I like words and they like me.” Where does a story like this start? It starts, like so many things do, near Port Hedland. In the Pilbara. In Western Australia. In a part of Australia that most Australians will never see. It’s out there, right out there. It starts in Wittenoom. Covered in blue asbestos, dead but still dangerous. Mining happens in dangerous places. Physically and metaphysically. For Dr Johnston, there was not so much writing as there was re-writing, submitting, waiting and getting rejected. Bad feedback. Good feedback. Even when people liked it they told her to re-write it. And here there is a parallel with medicine. Feedback. Feedback. And more feedback. Feedback is sometimes hard but it is something that can make you better. How many medical people do you know that have written a novel, a work of fiction? Not many. Now you know one more. Dustfall by Michelle Johnston. She didn’t want to push it so I will. Find the book here; https://uwap.uwa.edu.au/products/dustfall Go and listen to her speak about it, there will be book launches, promotional tours, lectures and a brand new pen. See Michelle speak; https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/words-with-wine-michelle-johnston-dustfall-tickets-42452631965 This was recorded at SMACC in Berlin. We had just heard the fantastic talk by Annet Alenyo ( @aalenyo) about #UBUNTU which was a special moment. Have a look for that talk when it is available and please, please, please consider supporting a delegate through @Supadel and maybe help a talented young doctor or nurse attend a fantastic event like #dasSMACC was and like #BadEMfest2018. Read more at www.BadEM.co.za Then read a novel. Big thanks to Tired Lion, Perth Post-Punk Feminist Combo getting us moving with their break out hit I dont think you like me, chosen to introduce Dr Johnston because of the lyrics, the provenance and presence of Sophie Hopes. If your not Australian you’ve probably never heard her before. Now you have. Go and get some Tired Lion on iTunes. Big thanks also to Lloyd Cole for a little clip of the mid-80’s classic Brand New Friend of his second album, chosen for the lyric “am I asking oh for so much, i’m not asking to be understood” but also because the tune jumped into my mind and refused to leave for three days after Michelle used the phrase “Brand New Pen”. You surely have some Lloyd? If not, iTunes again.

After a car accident, Michelle developed fibromyalgia. Michelle found traditional medicine, including pain meds, weren’t working for her. Michelle and her doctor put her in therapy, both to learn how to change her Type A personality, but also to learn about self care. This led to pain management mostly through yoga, working out, and eating well. As Michelle mastered her own self care, she began coaching others, first at her gym, and now with executives. Q & A Why is self love important? Self-love is important because if you don't take care of and love yourself, how can you really think you can love someone else? What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? Probably feeling selfish. Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? My son. Wanting to be a better person and a better example for him. What is the best advice you have ever received? I think probably to follow your passion and believe in yourself. What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? Taking a bath with Epsom salts and lavender. Can you share a resource, an app or a tool that we can use to build our selfcare practice. I use meditation. Do you have a favorite quote? “No excuses. Get out there and get moving.” What book are you reading right now? The Big Leap. What is the one thing that you are most passionate about? Life Guest Bio Michelle is the mom of two boys, and also health and wellness coach. Real estate is about selling the dream of home ownership. At least that’s how Melissa Kwan sees it. And she’s all about helping people accomplish their dreams - so when her background in real estate combined with her entrepreneurial bent, she was off in a flash to create something to help agents and customers connect and make that dream happen. The outcome is Spacio, Melissa’s startup company that aims to make the way real estate open houses are done a better experience for prospective buyers and a better sales opportunity for agents. She believes that if she can help the people on both sides of that equation, everyone wins. You’ll enjoy hearing Melissa’s energy and passion expressed, on this episode. What has taken the real estate industry so long to get on the technology train? If you think about the way real estate open houses are done, it’s pretty laughable. What other industry has people show up, in person, to a sales demonstration and relies on a paper and pen lead capture device? Yet real estate agents all over the country continue to run their open houses that way. But when a sleek, modern, easy to use digital interface is used instead, so much more is possible after the event and the home-buying prospects who visit the open house immediately see the agent as more advanced, more effective, and more skilled. Melissa Kwan talks about how she’s stepped into the real estate industry to provide help agents sell the dream of homeownership, and buyers to feel like they've met an agent they can trust, on this episode of Real Relationships. Tapping into the magical part of meeting someone face to face - through technology. To Michelle Kwan, meeting someone face to face has a magical component to it. The interchange, the opportunity to learn about the person’s background and core values, the ability to laugh together and share an experience - they’re all things that contribute to the first steps of a real and potentially lasting relationship. That’s one of the main reasons she’s stepped into the real estate industry to make the possibilities of open houses into more of a relationship building exercise than a sales experience, and she’s doing it through software. Find out how technology is fueling relationships and profitability at the same time, on this episode. How to build your business by helping people get where they want to be. As Michelle and I spoke about the way she’s been able to build her business so quickly she was not shy to say that she hasn’t attained her present level of success because of her own razor-sharp intellect or good looks. It has all happened because of the relationships she’s been able to build that have, in turn, led to introductions that have moved her projects forward. Her firm belief is that if she’s busy trying to help other people get where they want to go, they will be equally eager to help her get where she wants to go. So far it’s working out pretty well. You can hear her story by listening to this conversation. The reason doing business is simply about building relationships. We’ve all heard it before: People have to know, like, and trust you before they will do business with you. And none of that happens through marketing emails or cold calling alone. These days there has to be a connection between the people behind the transaction that fosters those things. Selling the dream of homeownership as a real estate agent is one of the places where those relationships can be advantageous to both buyer and agent. A home purchase is one of the most important financial investments most people will make in their entire lives. Doesn’t it make sense that they’d want to travel that journey with someone they trust? Michelle Kwan explains how she’s helping agents do business founded on relationships, on this episode of Real Relationships.
