Human beings are complex; we have needs, desires, and psychological biases. We have also, over time, developed an emotional relationship with money. Functional MRIs show that the way we feel about money is the same way we feel about life-or-death situations. Each of us has a “money script;” a narrative relating to money which has formed as a result of various influential factors in our lives, some of which we may not even be aware of. Unhealthy narratives can often result in a sense of shame, which prevents us from talking openly about our finances, and this can have dire consequences on an individual and societal level. That is why Michelle Arpin Begina, author, speaker, nationally-recognized financial advisor, activist, and our guest on today's show, has developed a humanistic approach to helping people handle their money, and their feelings about their money. She calls it financial therapy, and in this episode, you'll hear what her approach entails, some of the major recent trends she has noticed amongst her clients, as well as the challenging journey that Michelle took to get to the point where her financial status and her state of mind are aligned, making it easy for her to talk about money. And she can help you do it too! What you'll learn about in this episode:How Michelle and her business have fared during the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal that Michelle has to positively impact people's lives, and how she is currently doing that.A great reset that Michelle has seen occur as a result of the pandemic. What functional MRIs tell us about the feelings we have towards money.Michelle explains the concept she calls self-serve financial therapy. The strategy Michelle uses when she has to attend online conferences. What Michelle's approach to financial therapy entails. Behavior biases and how these impact our financial decisions. How a humanistic approach differs from a holistic approach. What the question, “What does wealth mean to you?” reveals about someone. The acronym used to describe the main elements of positive psychology. How the definition of success has changed over time. A shift in the way people are thinking about financial planning that Michelle has noticed.Meaning as a key part of the non-financial aspects of financial planning. The taboo that still exists around having conversations about money.Examples of the types of underlying “money scripts” that people have.Michelle shares her personal experience with money while she was growing up, and how her parents' financial decisions impacted her life.Four different types of will.Where conversations about money need to begin, and why it is so important to have these conversations. The fine line between a moderate scarcity mindset and a moderate abundance mindset.Where you can find Michelle's Success Formula Guide, and how this can help you.Click Here To Download Transcript

Michelle and Suzanne are both fully equipped with champagne (and no orange juice) for today’s episode that’s all about traveling by plane and the etiquette involved – a conversation that could have gone on for hours! The many travel restrictions imposed during the pandemic have resulted in our hosts both having acute cases of the travel bug so today they take a deep dive into proper flying etiquette, and, as always, the stories of their experiences with it.   Fresh from watching travel videos with her son and daughter-in-law, Suzanne runs through Michelle’s list of flying etiquette items with her, and the two of them share their firmly held opinions and laugh out loud stories that they swear have not been embellished. Suzanne explains what a ‘Karen’ is, Michelle explains Robb’s airplane set up, and then together they propose the improvements that they feel would make flights much more comfortable. As you will discover, these two best friends have extensive experience with flight travel, and they share the good, the bad, the ugly, and, of course, the hilarious, with listeners today. Episode Highlights:   ·   What Suzanne, her son, and daughter-in-law have been up to lately ·   Michelle’s list of airplane etiquette ·   Michelle and Suzanne’s flying stories ·   ‘Pulling a Karen’ ·   Robb’s airplane set up ·   What Michelle and Suzanne would change to make flight more comfortable ·   Suzanne’s theory on flying Quotes:   “The next thing I know, he takes off his shirt…the last piece of clothing between him and bare skin.”   “I found that a very weird perk of flying in first class internationally.”   “The barf bag lands on my feet!”   “We just see it…the pee glistening in her hair.”   “You can just sit there and wait, and I’ll handle you in a minute.”   “I am really going to lose it on you!”   “People are going to be afraid to get on a plane with me…I’m a little grumpy.”   “He starts poking my bladder.”   “What makes you more important than anyone else on the plane?”   “He flips his long hair over his reclining seat into my food.”   “The guy turned around and yelled at my son.”   “He thought somebody was stealing his DNA… or had injected him with a needle or something.”   “If I die, this is the person who’s responsible.”   “I ended up sitting right next to Anthony Bourdain.”   “We’re closing the doors – let’s get this party started!”   “Let’s rethink some of these regulations, and decide which ones are really important.”   “We clearly have a passion for talking about travel.” Links:   Homepage:  Orange Juice Optional   Goodnight Sweet Bear:  Goodnight Sweet Bear   Why Hello! Ep141: Michelle Tesoro (ACE) On Playing Chess With Your Career (Instead of Checkers) - pt1

Optimize Yourself

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 9, 2021 57:12

I’ve spent my entire career wondering what the difference is between those who simply string along one job after another to pay the bills and those who have extraordinary resumes, amazing credits, and award-winning careers. You might assume it's some combination of God-given talent, luck and hard work. If you've listened to me for any amount of time, you know I consider "luck" to be a four letter word (so that’s out), but I do believe talent and hard work absolutely play a role when it comes to success. However, I think the difference for those who reach the highest levels is that they are simply playing a totally different game than everyone else. Most people are playing a game of checkers...the best of the best are playing chess. Today's guest, ACE editor, Michelle Tesoro has worked on critically acclaimed shows such as House of Cards, Godless, On the Basis of Sex, When They See Us, and most recently The Queen's Gambit. Rather than talk about her creative process editing The Queen's Gambit, Michelle and I take a different approach in this conversation and discuss the metaphor of chess as life and how you can apply a long-term, more strategic chess-like approach to your career. Michelle and I had such an in-depth conversation that I've made it a two-part series. In this first part we discuss how Michelle chooses the projects & people she works with, and we discover how there is a common theme running through much of her work that keeps her engaged and passionate (despite the arduous nature of the projects she takes on). Michelle also shares what she believes to be her greatest assets and soft skills (outside the editing timeline) that have led to her tremendous success in Hollywood. Finally, I am keenly aware that Michelle has been making the rounds on the podcast circuit, but rest assured no matter what you’ve listened to already this very candid conversation covers fresh ground with stories you definitely haven’t heard on other shows. And you don't want to miss part 2 next week where I put Michelle on the hot seat to discuss the challenge of balancing her career with the rest of her life. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: The first small moments Michelle realized that editing was for her. How a street artist in New York helped her understand the power of editing and storytelling. The similarities between Michelle and the lead character, Beth in The Queen's Gambit. How Michelle has become comfortable being the only woman in the room. The parallels Michelle can draw from the themes of On the Basis of Sex and her own mom and childhood. Michelle shares one of the most valuable soft skills she possesses that helps her gain the trust of her collaborators. How being clear about her goals early on in her career helped guide the decisions she made. The word that Michelle has been practicing to use more often in her career.  HINT: it’s not “Yes!” KEY TAKEAWAY: The only way to confidently say no is if you know what the end goal is. What Michelle learned from NOT getting the ACE Internship when she applied for it at the start of her career. On this episode of The Marketer's Journey, I interview Michelle Huff, CMO at UserTesting. UserTesting has seen amazing growth, moving from 50 million to 100 million in revenue over the course of Michelle's time there and as the CMO Michelle has kept laser focused on this growth but been mindful of building a cohesive team that feels embraced by her as a leader. UserTesting has created a double-sided marketplace that is redefining the market research industry. What Michelle has learned marketing for this rapidly growing company in this developing industry is that listening to your buyers is king. Many marketers champion the importance of their buyers without ever speaking directly to them; outsourcing market research and feedback collection. CMOs need to make sure their entire organization is committed to listening to their customers no matter what.   Check out this and other episodes of The Marketer's Journey on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, and Google Play!   Key takeaways from this episode:   Working within an existing category comes with budget because the need has been proven.  With new categories, you're constantly justifying why you and why now. You're convincing people to do things in a different way and this always comes with challenges.  One of the most interesting things about the COVID-19 pandemic is that literally every industry has been impacted. Consumer buying behaviour in every industry has changed and companies are thriving based on their adaptability.  Who you are working for is important. Culture is important. Consider these factors as much as you consider the role and the company itself.  Learn more about UserTesting here: https://www.usertesting.com/. Learn more about Michelle here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michellehuff/.

COVID has, indeed, been a Grinch for our hosts over the past little while, and today they fill you in on all the details.   They begin by discussing the COVID diagnoses that both Suzanne and Robb received in December, what their quarantine experiences were like, and Michelle shares details of her own COVID test. Some of their stories regarding those times when they had to be nursemaids to members of their families follow, as well as a discussion about Suzanne’s hypochondria as a child, and what they both are like as patients. They finish up their conversation by reviewing their worst illnesses, including the dreaded strep throat. While the subject matter may be somewhat heavier than usual this week, Michelle and Suzanne’s trademark good humor and vibrant nature render this episode one that will still offer you some things to smile about and, of course, a whole lot of things you’ll find completely relatable. With the approaching holidays, Michelle and Suzanne are devoting this second episode of the podcast to all things Thanksgiving. As all rich conversations do, theirs tends to veer off into fascinating asides, but they always find their way back to the main topic of Thanksgiving and all that goes along with it, especially champagne and vodka.   In addition to describing what their Thanksgiving holidays usually entail, including traditions and some memorable stories, our hosts also share details about their grocery shopping practices, Suzanne’s pantry, the love of her life, and a glimpse of what life is like in Alaska. Shopping, Black Friday, and even a little bit of Christmas decorating are all explored as well. Prominent throughout the episode is their discussion of those aspects of life, unique to each of them, for which they are thankful – and there are a lot. Once again this week, you are invited to laugh along as you recognize some aspects of your own self in the entertaining stories and insightful observations of these two great friends.   Episode Highlights:   ·   What Thanksgiving is like for Michelle and Suzanne ·   The Thanksgiving meal and traditions ·   Grocery shopping preferences and practices ·   Robb’s deep fried turkey experience ·   Thanksgiving traditions ·   Michelle and Suzanne’s memorable family experiences ·   Suzanne’s pantry ·   What Michelle and Suzanne are thankful for ·   Shopping and Black Friday ·   Decorating for Christmas ·   Alaskan sunshine and temperatures   Quotes:   “We used to go to Hawaii every year for Thanksgiving.”   “Part of being a Pastor’s kid is you have to go to every potluck the church ever has…I hate potluck.”   “I buy the groceries, they cook the groceries.”   “I have trouble when a room is quiet.”   “Nobody was hurt in the making of our turkey, but our driveway was scarred.”   “It was a shitshow.”   “We always plan our…Thanksgiving dinner around when the Dallas Cowboys are playing football.”   “There’s always one family that dominates the conversation at the table.”   “We don’t want everyone to hate us already!”   “It’s not something they taught you in Sunday School.”   “Amazon at our house should have its own line item in the budget.”   “I like to touch and feel.”   “I now do trees in every room of my house.”   “I will never, ever take it for granted when I open my eyes and the sun is shining.”   “It’s like The Wizard of Oz.”   “We would actually…have to duct tape our faces.”   “We’re not going political here.”   “Happy Thanksgiving everybody. As an embroidery person myself, I am naturally attracted to other fiber artists - and Michelle Staub of Stitching Sabbatical creates such incredible work, it's hard to ignore. But also it totally catches my eye and I love it so much every time I see it. Michelle has an insane talent - she stitches photo realistic pet portraits. YES, STITCHES THEM. With thread. It's insane. So it's easy to see why people would love following her to begin with, but Michelle wasn't going to rest on her laurels when it came to Instagram. She went about approaching her account in a very specific and intentional way (it might surprise you!) and she created an atmosphere where people could EXPECT something from her. She made herself a reliable party and people kept showing up! What Michelle has done with Instagram might surprise you in a lot of ways. A lot of it was really refreshing to me and served as a good reminder that what we see and what we infer about what we see isn't already ... well, correct. After chatting with Kim of Daisy Faye Designs about her IG debacle, and having this discussion with Michelle about her Instagram experience, I have firmed up my conclusion that Instagram is useful for connecting with an audience, and it's fun to use... but it's not the be all end all. (Personally i actually find it is NOT fun sometime haha.) Both Kim and Michelle shared with us that while Instagram assists their business - and they are both using it in completely different ways - their businesses are reliant primarily on their talents. IG helps them share that talent and that's awesome. Michelle Ives is a long-time listener of The Clever Girls know podcast and she got in touch with me because Clever Girl Finance has been a part of her financial education and she wanted to share her incredible story with all of us! About Michelle Ives: Michelle is a copywriter and brand strategist for her own business, Wordy and Smith. She lives in Sydney with her husband, Andy, and together, they’re well on their way to having saved their first half a million.   Formerly a journalist, Michelle spent over a decade working as a published writer (and a few other odd jobs). She learnt the in’s and out’s of how to build (and market) a successful business through two startups, as their respective Head of Communications. Just like the company's lean marketing budget, Michelle had to learn how to manage her personal one much the same way.   Michelle has a goal of fully retiring by the time she is 35, living solely off of the passive income generated through her assets in savings, property, shares, and superannuation. This will allow her to travel freely, volunteer full-time for causes she is passionate about and write for passion, not profit. To date, Michelle and her husband Andy, have saved and invested well over $400k, with another $100k rapidly piling up - and a clear strategy for success. What Michelle discussed in this episode: - The reasons why retiring early is a goal of hers. - How observing her husband was the turning point that caused her to take her finances seriously - What the experience of saving has been like, as well as the life-changing mindset and habit shifts she adopted to reach those numbers and much more. For years Bailey Richert was caught up in the 'rat race' as she followed what she was taught was the 'right path' in life. A high school valedictorian and magna cum laude engineering university graduate, Bailey took a job for many years working the 9-to-5 consulting grind in California. To most, it must have seemed like she 'had it all', but she wasn't anywhere near being fulfilled. The cubicle life would never allow her to achieve the dreams, goals and ambitions she had. So she decided to make a change. In 2013, Bailey left her corporate career, studied entrepreneurship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and launched her own online, location independent business with the goal of earning her own income from anywhere in the world. Today, she helps others realize that it is possible to achieve the life you truly desire if you put in the effort to create the financial means to support that life. Her business model of choice? "Infopreneurship". Through her books, blog, courses, coaching programs and events, Bailey helps individuals launch profitable online enterprises as “infopreneurs”: respected experts in their fields creating value and generating income by sharing their life experience, knowledge and passions with others in a manner that supports their ideal lifestyles.   What is stage 0 to hosting a mini workshop / mini summit and building my list? What is the behind the scenes prep work before you even start the workshop? 12 step process (3 phases): each phase takes a month for big summits Planning logistics (sit down before you take action): how many days, what are the dates, what is the theme, name of the event (don’t bring in speakers before you know what the theme is) How would you put the fears of failure to rest? And how do you attract the right speakers? A lot of people might say no, but it doesn’t mean that you or your event are not worth it (people might be busy and wouldn’t have time to be a real partner, or there might be personal things going on, or they might say no because they don’t know you yet, etc.) If they say no, maybe ask if you can interview them for your podcast, start building a relationship How to actually reach out to them: Never over social media (connecting is ok though, but not invite), email them. Include personal connection to show that you genuinely care about them and their projects (“I followed your blog and this article resonated with me”, etc.).   As a host, you should welcome genuine feedback from the speakers you invite.   What Michelle has been going thru (with hosting her first summit) Wanted to film in person with all entrepreneurs in one place (constantly changing dates) - Didn’t feel like it would work out. Melodrama. Thoughts of failure. - Reinvent yourself: Film in different segments when speakers have time, edit it together like a movie. And that worked! - Be authentic to yourself - Go with the flow and don’t get stuck on what you think something has to look like or be done like   What are some good tips in terms of you staying healthy, s

The Couragemakers Podcast | Encouragement, Inspiration & Rebel Rousing for Mission Driven Doers, Makers & Shakers |

Hello and welcome to episode 61 of The Couragemakers Podcast! This week I'm chatting to Michelle Madrid-Branch and we're really diving into claiming our own identities and owning our stories. Michelle is an author, speaker, life wellness coach, and global advocate for women and children, living in Santa Barbara, CA, with her husband, children , three dogs and a bunny. Michelle advocates on behalf of women and children who are marginalized and left feeling isolated in our society. Michelle is happiest when using her life journey in an effort to serve others and help others rise up from their pain. She is currently in the process of writing her fourth book. In this episode, Michelle shares her journey, from being born in the UK and placed in the foster care system to being adopted by an American family and learning to untangle labels she had been given and finding her own identity. We really explore the power of owning your story, moving beyond past stories that keep us stuck and changing our lens so we can start to reclaim our lives. Michelle shares what inspires her to work with and advocate on behalf of children without families and the lessons she has learned along the way. She also shares how she has found that every one of us is uniquely qualified to bring something positive into the world, and invites listeners to explore their own unique strengths and gifts. We also have a great conversation about how forgiveness can free us and take us out of our own prisons and how sustainability is key when it comes to building a life you love. This episode is a great reminder that you do have the courage to find your own identity, and to own that identity because no one can give it to you. I loved hearing Michelle's story and how openly she shares about how she found the courage to find the magic in the mess and be who she is. I know you're going to love this episode. Enjoy the show!   About Michelle   Michelle is an author, speaker, life wellness coach, and global advocate for women and children. Session 01 Welcome to the first episode of the Specialist Stories podcast, sharing with you stories of specialists from every field to give you the information you need to make sure you make the most informed decision possible when it comes to choosing your specialty. This podcast is hosted by Dr. Ryan Gray where he will interview different physicians from various specialties to help medical students and premedical students get different perspectives on what led them to their career path. The Specialist Stories podcast is part of the MedEd Media Network where you will find all of our other shows. In this week's episode, Ryan talks with Dr. Michelle Hure, a dermatopathologist who has her own solo practice in her community. A brief look into Ryan's background: Ryan went to medical school wanting to be an orthopedic surgeon and he came out of medical school (through an HPSP scholarship from the Air Force) knowing that orthopedic surgery was right for him. Unfortunately the Air Force had different plans for him. So he ultimately did not practice orthopedics and went on as a flight surgeon. Here are the highlights of the conversation with Dr. Hure: When Michelle knew she wanted to be a dermatologist: From an interest in trauma surgery to dermatopathology Realizing the need for work-life balance Coming to a point of not wanting to do until her 4th years during rotation What she likes about her specialty: Changing people's lives and curing cancer Getting to do surgery Being able to get home at 5 Making use of her brain everyday What a dermatopathologist does: Two routes: Dermatology residency Pathology residency As a pathologist, it involves diagnosing conditions or interpreting biopsies that is key to a patient's treatment plan. You are the doctor's doctor Can do both clinical and pathology A day in the life of Michelle: Reading slides of biopsies she has taken personally or those from other doctors Seeing patients at 10 am Traits that lead to being a good dermatopathologist: Open mindedness: Being able to think of different possibilities and looking at slides without any biases Knowledge of clinical history and clinical medicine Curiosity Openness to different differential diagnosis A lot of thinking and investigation What makes a competitive applicant to dermatology and dermatopathology: Dermatopathology is very tough to get into since there aren't many programs so programs available are highly competitive. Be always in your game. Walk the extra mile. Do rotations in a place you're really interested in doing your residency as well as your fellowships. Be willing to take initiative. What residency was like for her: Collaboration as an important piece Pick a residency at the particular institution where that fellowship is to have a higher chance of getting in. What she wished she knew going into dermatology/dermatopathology: It's possible to have a family early on. Family comes first, residency and fellowship come second What she wished primary care providers knew more about dermatopathology: Training in dermatology and pathology What Michelle likes most about being a dermatopathologist: Intellectual stimulation Patient interaction Surgery Being able to cure cancer What she likes the least about her practice: Dealing with insurance companies If she had to do it all over again, would she choose another specialty? No, not at all. What is the future of dermatopathology? The pressure of being more noticeable to people so that biopsies must be done by experts in the field and not just "general" pathologists - It's not about money, it's about patient care! The saturation of the field Some pieces of advice to those wanting to be a dermatopathologist: Look for work-life balance. You have to be happy with the specialty you pick. In dermatology or pathology, you will do well money-wise, but you're also going to have a good work-life balance, which is one of the most important things you need to consider in going to a particular field. Pick a specialty that you're going to do well in and you're going to be happy with. Session 52 This is a full recording of the first episode of the Specialist Stories podcast, which is another addition to the MedEd Media Network. The idea of this podcast was actually born out of The Academy where Ryan had several interviews with different specialists to help students get an understanding of what each specialty was like as well as their pros and cons. Through the Specialist Stories podcast, Ryan interviews different physicians from various specialties to help medical students and premedical students get different perspectives on what led them to their career path. Guests will be sharing with you stories of specialists from every field to give you the information you need to make sure you make the most informed decision possible when it comes to choosing your specialty. In this week's episode, Ryan talks with Dr. Michelle Hure, a dermatopathologist who has her own solo practice in her community.
