These days there is understandably a lot of talk and a lot of fear about the future of jobs. Speculations are plentiful and some are downright grim. The questions abound: what will the future bring as it relates to employment? How will my children's work-life look? You may even be thinking, damn, what will my own work look like in a few years? The truth is nobody really knows. But a good place to form hypotheses about the future may exist in thoughtful analysis of current research as well as looking deeply at history. It is crucial that we cool our heads and listen to thought leaders who have real-world experience plus those who have given deep and objective thought to the matter. And that is why I'm so grateful to have had this conversation with just such a person. Jeff Wald is the Founder of Work Market, as well as several other technology companies including Spinback which was eventually sold to Salesforce. Jeff is now an angel investor who holds an MBA from Harvard University and an MS and a BS from Cornell University. He's also the author of a book I found helpful and informative called, The End of Jobs: The Rise of On-Demand Workers and Agile Corporations and Jeff and I geek out to the future of jobs as he sees it. As you will hear, Jeff draws deeply on research and history and he gives his take on the skills that will be necessary in the future, the relevance of college education, jobs on the rise, jobs on their way out, jobs that will change, and his thoughtful weigh-in on where we are heading in general. So, listen in as Jeff and I talk about the future of jobs.
Jeff Wald is a serial entrepreneur, author, speaker, investor, and board member. He co-founded Work Market, which was acquired by ADP in 2018, and founded Spinback, which was purchased by Salesforce.com. He has served on various boards and is an adviser to companies and organizations, including the X-Prize's Rapid Reskilling Initiative. He is the author of the Amazon best-seller, The End of Jobs: The Rise of On-Demand Workers and Agile Corporations. The End Of Jobs explores the shift towards a gig economy and its impact on workers, companies, and society. RAISING CAPITAL IN THE 21ST CENTURY The process of raising capital for a startup is a crucial part of its journey. In order to secure the right funding, it is important to approach the right investors who are interested in investing in your company. Jeff suggests avoiding cold emails as they are no longer effective, with him personally responding to none of them. Instead, Jeff suggests using platforms like LinkedIn to connect with potential investors through mutual friends or colleagues, which increases the chances of making a personal connection and securing funding. As Jeff says, "Money comes with people attached,” and it's important to know their expectations. Having the right capital partner is essential, as they are part of the company's management team and have a say in its direction. If the right partner isn't found, it's better to slow growth or explore other alternatives rather than take on a bad partner that could harm the company's future. Slow growth may not be ideal, but it's preferable to a bad partner. THE SOCIAL IMPACT OF THE EVOLUTION OF WORK Jeff's book, The End of Jobs: The Rise of On-Demand Workers and Agile Corporations, is a reflection of his belief that people tend to romanticize the past, complain about the present, and fear the future. He wants to help people understand that work has continually gotten better over time and that this trend will likely continue in the future. He believes that by focusing on the future of work, we can prepare ourselves for the changes that are sure to come and make the most of the opportunities that will arise. TECHNOLOGY & INVESTING As an angel investor, Jeff has learned some important lessons about investing and the future of work. He believes that his ability to invest wisely is limited by the amount of time he has available, so he has shifted his focus towards becoming a Limited Partner in venture funds. This allows him to deploy capital to venture funds with a specific focus, such as cybersecurity, marijuana, enterprise software, or the future of work. Technology is, once again, a driving force of change in the world of investing. Companies are always making big investment decisions, and as technology continues to advance, the gap between what can be built and what has been built will increase. Jeff believes that this shift will drive companies to adapt and make changes, which will ultimately lead to progress. If you asked your team the mission of your company, would each person have a similar answer? Or would their answers be all over the place? As a serial entrepreneur, Jeff knows that if you want to get your team moving in the same direction, it takes a well-defined culture -- one that is put into practice daily. If your team doesn't know who you are, why you're there, where you're going, and what you stand for, you could be setting your company up for failure… In this Powerful at Work Radio podcast episode, Jeff also talks about the future of remote work and why leaders should be open minded when considering this as an option for their team. He urges leaders to be cautious about jumping to conclusions before researching the facts. Episode Outline: [02:14] Using history and data patterns to predict the future of work... [06:18] Does productivity really require presence in the office? [11:26] We're a social animal, we actually don't want to be locked away in our homes... [23:02] I will tell you that the biggest mistake I made was that we did not have a culture document. [28:18] Making the tough decision to let go of a high performing team member that doesn't embrace your culture or share your values... Many employers understand that their employees are the key to making their businesses successful. Yet, once those workers move on, companies typically don't keep in contact with them. Should they? In this episode, we speak with Kim Seymour, Chief People Officer of WW International Inc.(formerly Weight Watchers) and Jeff Wald, an angel investor, entrepreneur, and bestselling author, about the value of maintaining relationships with past employees and where the future of work as we know it might be headed. In her role, Seymour oversees all aspects of WW's human capital plan, with a strong emphasis on talent, leadership, diversity, and organizational effectiveness. She spent the previous two decades in HR leadership roles at American Express, Home Depot, and General Electric. Seymour currently serves on the board of directors of RHR International and the board of trustees of Fisk University, a historically Black college. A graduate of both the University of Tennessee at Martin and Vanderbilt Law School, Seymour also holds an MBA from Indiana University. As an expert in business culture and talent, she is often asked to share her forward-thinking HR strategies and personal leadership philosophies with a variety of global audiences. Jeff Wald is the bestselling author of The End of Jobs: The Rise of On-Demand Workers and Agile Corporations, about how companies and workers reacted to the last three industrial revolutions. He is the founder of three tech companies, including WorkMarket, purchased by ADP, and Spinback, acquired by Buddy Media. He is also an angel investor and startup adviser. Wald serves on the board of directors at TRANSFR Inc., ModusLink, and Costar Technologies. He holds two degrees from Cornell University, and is an alumnus of Harvard Business School. In 2020, Wald announced the $10 million Future of Work Prize that will reward The End of Jobs contributor whose prediction about what the workforce will look like in 2040 proves the most accurate. Seymour and Wald discuss what they think will be the COVID-19 pandemic's most lasting influences on the world of work, what shorter employee tenure means for company culture, and why we should be thinking about ex-employees as ambassadors. They also talk about why healthy employer/employee relationships depend on keeping open lines of communication and not taking things personally, and how to create team success within a hybrid work structure. Some Questions Asked:What changes have already occurred in the world of work since The End of Jobs came out last year? What emerging technologies do you think will most change the world of work?Is the trend toward shorter tenures a good thing? Is WW doing anything to counteract it? How do you hire employees who understand the need to be constant learners and adapters? And how do you foster that growth mindset among the employees you already have?In This Episode, You Will Learn:Why we need to rethink the system of tying benefits to current employment. About the idea of alumni labor clouds and their implications for current and former employees and employers.WW's take on how, when, and where its employees should work.Links for Kim Seymour:FortuneForbesLinkedInLinks for Jeff Wald:The End of Jobs: The Rise of On-Demand Workers and Agile CorporationsPR Newswire - $10 Million Future of Work PrizeLinkedIn See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Jeff is an active angel investor and startup advisor, as well as serving on numerous public and private Boards of Directors.Jeff is the author of the Amazon Best Seller The End of Jobs: The Rise of On-Demand Workers and Agile Corporations.Book Description; As the robots rise, we are faced with the End of Jobs, but not in the way you might think...The world has witnessed three step functions in technological change: mechanisation, electrification, and computerisation. These industrial revolutions led to massive increases in productivity and thus we need far fewer workers. With each of these technological breakthroughs, the power balance between companies and workers shifted heavily to companies. The abuses of that power by companies instigated employee unrest and sometimes even armed uprisings. Counterbalancing forces rose to constrain companies' power, eventually prompting unions, regulation, and the social safety net to bring stability to the relationship. As we enter the fourth great leap forward in technology with robots and AI, we face the first services revolution. The power balance will again shift massively to companies as new technologies drive productivity increases in the service industry, much as the last three industrial revolutions transformed manufacturing. What lessons can we learn from the past three industrial revolutions and the current state of the labor market? How will we renegotiate the social contract to ensure fairness for workers, set clear rules for companies, and provide stability for society? What is the future of work?

Jeff Wald harbored an ulterior motive when he dedicated $10 million of his own money to the Future of Work Prize. Modeled after the X Prize, he created this contest because his editor thought he needed more pages in his book, “The End of Jobs: The Rise of On-Demand Workers and Agile Corporations.” Jeff's book challenges the notion of what “work” actually is as well as the future educational system. Named "One of the 100 Most Influential People in Staffing" by the Staffing Industry Analysts in 2017 and 2018, he has also written the best-selling book “The End of Jobs: The Rise of On-Demand Workers and Agile Corporations”. This insightful episode is a must-listen-to for recruiters - both as business owners, workers and advisors. Expect to gain an understanding of Jeff's predictions for the future of recruitment, what history can tell us about workforce trends, and why the impact of automation on jobs isn't necessarily what you expect. Timestamped guide: 00:52 - Introduction to Jeff 01:35 - Can we start by you telling us about your experience of growing businesses before you started WorkMarket? 03:28 - What made you write The End of Jobs? What were the key messages that you felt the world needed to hear? 06:22 - In how much of your future predictions can you really use historical evidence? 09:24 - Now, can you walk us through what you believe the evidence is actually telling us about the future of work? 12:42 - You say that in each case before the end result has been more jobs; what has been the impact of that on how jobs on a more granular level have changed? 17:02 - Interestingly in your book, you make a point about how even though the changing nature of jobs and the removal of those highly repetitive task-based jobs has led to jobs needing to change, it hasn't entirely made companies in effect disappear, has it? 21:31 - Even if you're looking at just the valuation of a company, a lot of that depends on the effectiveness of his workforce, doesn't it? 23:02 - What do you think the recruitment industry should be aware of when looking for opportunities? 26:41 - What can individuals and leaders of business do now to make sure that they are well equipped to survive any sort of transition into their job becoming automated? And what are the skills that will be most useful for a business leader in the future? 30:40 - Some of the listeners are going to want to get your book, where do they go to do that? Recruiters, are you prepared for the threats and opportunities that will affect our industry as we enter the early stages of a fourth industrial revolution, characterized by the rise of robots and Artificial Intelligence? As the trend towards automation gathers pace, there will be seismic shifts in the global labor market. Many jobs will disappear completely while entirely new types of jobs will be created. How will these changes affect you as a recruiter or recruitment business owner? To help answer this question, I asked Jeff Wald, best-selling author of The End of Jobs: The Rise of On-Demand Workers and Agile Corporations, to share his insights with listeners of my podcast. Jeff is an angel investor and startup advisor, having built and sold multiple technology companies. He was the founder of WorkMarket, an enterprise software platform that enables companies to manage their freelancers which he sold to ADP in 2018. He is also the founder of Spinback which he sold to salesforce.com. Jeff frequently speaks at conferences and in media on the future of work. Episode Outline and Highlights [1:48] How Jeff got into the field of the work market and on-demand labour. [4:11] Jeff shares the first business failure that bankrupted him. Listen to his learnings from this experience. [11:25] Hear an insightful discussion on the future of work and the fourth industrial revolution. [18:24] Post-pandemic near and long term effects. [25:56] Jeff elaborates more on the fourth industrial revolution - will tech eventually replace the majority of workforce functions? Hear the numbers. [38:00] Economic and social dislocation and its impact on the fourth industrial revolution. [40:15] The future of On-Demand Labour. [45:00] Jeff reveals why he wrote his bestselling book, the End of Jobs: The Rise of On-Demand Workers and Agile Corporations. [53:00] How Jeff's Tony-Award winning production fits into his career. A Firm Believer of the Growth Mindset In our conversation, Jeff shared one of the most significant backstories in his career: a business failure that bankrupted him to his last dollar. As you listen to the details, you will also feel Jeff's frustration. Despite having beautiful concepts and business plans, the fallout was caused by stakeholders not getting along. It was really difficult to see the learnings while you are in the midst of the storm. As he said, “I'm a huge believer in the growth mindset… this is a learning experience, it's tough to see when you're in it… Everybody was saying, ‘oh you're gonna look back at this and think it's so great' and I was like, ‘Ah, shut up! I don't want to hear that.' Because you don't want to hear it at the time but it is certainly true.” A lot of recruiters and recruitment business owners might have experienced the same since last year because of the challenges brought about by the pandemic. If Jeff could give any advice to struggling recruiters, what would it be? Below are the highlights: Failure is critical to learning. Jeff said, “If you're gonna do three startups and one of them has to fail and bankrupt you, have it be the first.” Be data-driven but remember that not everything is not within your control. The biggest variable that will determine your success is you. Your ability to push through and be resilient is the most important variable. There are times that the most intelligent thing to do is to fold it up. The Future of the Work Market Given the current situation and that we are in the early stages of what many are calling ‘fourth industrial revolution (robots and AI)', what predictions can Jeff make about the future of work? He gave really interesting and insightful inputs. “I will say this, history tends to rhyme…” is how he started his response. A valid point he raised: it is best to look at how we reacted to the first three industrial revolutions to see how society might react to the fourth revolution. For the past three industrial revolutions (mechanization, electrification, computerization) this is what was seen: In the beginning, people started to “freak out” and were fearful of losing jobs In the middle, job losses, economic and social disruptions occur, but at the same time, lower cost of production and greater output happens as well as an increase in the number of jobs. In the end, there are more jobs, higher standards of living, and people that work fewer hours. Jeff concludes, “And so as we look at the fourth… I am confident that there will be many differences in this industrial revolution. It will happen quicker, it will be more global, productivity increases might actually be greater, I am very confident that we will see higher standards of living, more jobs, and people working fewer hours.” Jeff Wald Bio and Contact Info Jeff is a serial entrepreneur, Board Member, Best Selling Author, Keynote speaker and investor. MBO Partners talks to Jeff about this need for a robust skills taxonomy within and across companies, the flux of supply and demand today, and what we still need to talk about collectively to realize our desired future of work.Jeff speaks about how technology not only helps to bring organization to HR chaos and de-risk human talent management, but also provides opportunities to independent workers. He also talks about the decline in government and company safety nets and how regulatory measures are still needed to improve the future of work. As he sees that slow to happen, he talks about how informal worker collective efforts and the development of a robust skills taxonomy may be what's needed to move the needle. The conversation highlights some of the insights in the 2020 State of Independence in America report. Now in its tenth year of publication, the report takes a data-driven approach to understanding the growth of opportunities for both the independent professional and the enterprise organizations looking to hire them. ABOUT "The End of Jobs" As the robots rise, we are faced with the End of Jobs, but not in the way you might think... The world has witnessed three step functions in technological change: mechanization, electrification, and computerization. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/proactivetalent/message
