Philippians 4:9:"Those things, which ye have both learned, andreceived, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be withyou."   Noticethe little command near the end of the verse: "Do." One simple word.Christianity was never intended to be merely something we know. It is somethingwe live. James reminds us of this in James 1:22, "But be you doers ofthe word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves."  Knowledge without obedience only producesdeception. The goal of Bible study is never simply information. It istransformation. Paulreminds the Philippians of four ways they had received God's truth. First, theyhad learned it. That speaks of careful instruction. For several years Paul hadtaught these believers the Word of God. Second, they had received it. Thatmeans they welcomed it and accepted it as God's truth. Hearing truth is onething. Receiving truth is another. Third, they had heard it. Again and againthey listened as Paul preached Christ. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing bythe Word of God. Butthen Paul adds something remarkable. They had seen it in him. Paul wasn'tasking them to imitate a perfect man. He was asking them to follow a faithfulexample. He had already written in chapter 3:17, "Brethren, befollowers together of me." Not because Paul was perfect. In fact, hehad just admitted in chapter 3 that he had not already attained. But he wassincerely following Christ. Someonehas wisely said, "People may doubt what you say, but they usually believewhat you do." Augustine said, “Preach the Gospel, preach the Gospel, andif necessary use words”. Our lives either reinforce our message or contradictit. Paul could boldly say, "You've heard me preach it, and you've watchedme live it."Whata challenge for every Christian. Our children are watching us. Ourgrandchildren are watching us. Our neighbors are watching us. The people wework beside are watching us. Our lives become living sermons every single day. Paulthen gives this simple command: "Do." Put it into practice. Practicewhat you have learned. Practice what you believe. Practice what God has shownyou. Someone once said that the distance between heaven and earth is only abouteighteen inches—the distance from the head to the heart. But I might add thereis another distance—from the heart to the hands and feet. God wants His truthto move from our minds, to our hearts, and finally into our daily lives. TheChristian life is learned one step of obedience at a time. Thennotice the wonderful promise. Paul does not simply say that the peace of Godwill guard you. He now says, "The God of peace shall be with you."Back in verse 7, Paul promised the peace of God. Now he promises thepresence of the God of peace. What could be better than that? When we walk injoyful obedience, we enjoy the fellowship of God's presence in a very real way.The greatest blessing of obedience is not merely answered prayer, or even innerpeace. The greatest blessing is that we experience the nearness of God Himself.Jesus said in John 14:21, "He that has my commandments, and keeps them,he it is that loves me... and I will love him, and will manifest myself tohim." May each of us not merely know God's Word. May we live God'sWord. Asthe old hymn reminds us, "Trust and obey, for there's no other way to behappy in Jesus, but to trust and obey."Let'spray.  Heavenly Father, thank You forgiving us Your precious Word. Help us not to be hearers only, but doers of YourWord. May the truths we learn each day shape the way we live, the way we speak,and the way we love others. Help us to be examples of faithful followers ofChrist so that others will see Jesus in us. Thank You for the wonderful promisethat as we walk in obedience, the God of peace will be with us. May we enjoyYour presence every day of our lives. We ask this in the precious name of Jesus.Amen.

Welcometo Pastor's Chat. Today we conclude our study of Philippians 4:8. For the pastseveral days we have carefully walked through this remarkable verse. Paul hasgiven us a divine pattern for guarding our minds. He has taught us to think onthings that are True... Honorable... Just... Pure... Lovely... Of Good Report...Full of Virtue... And Worthy of Praise. But before we leave this verse, I wantus to step back and see the big picture. Paulis not merely giving us a list. He is describing the mind of Christ. Earlier inthis letter, in Philippians 2:5, Paul wrote, "Let this mind be in you,which was also in Christ Jesus." Now, in chapter 4, he shows us whatthat mind looks like. Everything on this list perfectly describes our LordJesus Christ. He is Truth. Everything about Him is honorable. Everything Hedoes is just. He is absolutely pure. His life is altogether lovely. EverythingHe says is of good report. He is the very definition of virtue. He alone isworthy of all praise. The more we think about Christ... The more we become likeChrist. Paulunderstood something we often forget. Our lives move in the direction of ourthoughts. That is why verse 8 comes before verse 9. First comes right thinking.Then comes right living. Listen to the opening words of verse 9: "Thosethings, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me,do..."Noticethe progression. Think... Then do. Meditate... Then practice. Truth believedbecomes truth lived. Foryears I have been reminded that the Christian life is much like building ahouse. Our thoughts are the foundation. Our words become the framework. Ouractions build the walls. Our habits put on the roof. Our character becomes thefinished house. Everything begins with the foundation. No wonder Solomon wrote,"For as a man thinks in his heart, so is he." (Proverbs 23:7) Thebattle for the Christian life is truly the battle for the mind. That battle isbeing fought every day. It is fought by what we watch. What we read. What welisten to. What we meditate upon. What we allow to remain in our thoughts. Thewonderful news is that God has not left us defenseless. He has given us HisHoly Spirit. He has given us His Word. He has given us the privilege of prayer. Inverse 7 He promises the peace of God to guard our hearts.Inverse 8 He gives us the truth of God to guard our minds.Tomorrow,in verse 9, He gives us the God of peace to guide our lives. Whata beautiful progression! The peace of God guards our hearts. The truth of Godguards our minds. The God of peace guides our lives. Friend,this week, why not memorize Philippians 4:8? Write it on a card. Read it everymorning. Pray through each phrase. Use it as a filter for every thought thatenters your mind. As you do, you'll discover that God is not merely changingwhat you think. He is changing who you are. And when our minds become more likeChrist, our lives will become more like Christ. That is the goal of theChristian life. Tomorrowwe'll begin looking at verse 9 and discover that God's truth is never meantmerely to be admired. It is meant to be practiced. Let'sPray: Heavenly Father, thank You for this wonderful passage that teaches us howto guard our minds. Thank You for giving us the perfect example of the LordJesus Christ. May His mind increasingly become our mind. Help us to think Yourthoughts, love what You love, reject what dishonors You, and faithfullypractice what You teach us. Saturday July 11“Whatever things are pure." Thisword speaks of that which is morally clean, undefiled, innocent, and holy. Itdescribes a life that has not been contaminated by the pollution of sin. Welive in a world that has almost lost the meaning of purity. Every day we aresurrounded by images, conversations, advertisements, movies, televisionprograms, websites, and social media that appeal to the lust of the flesh, thelust of the eyes, and the pride of life. Impurity has become so common thatmany people no longer blush at what once brought shame. ButGod has never lowered His standard. Jesus said in Matthew 5:8, "Blessedare the pure in heart: for they shall see God." Notice He did notsimply say, "Blessed are the pure in conduct." He said, "Blessedare the pure in heart." God is always interested in the condition of theheart because the heart determines the conduct of the life. That is why Paul istalking about our thinking. Long before sin becomes an action, it usuallybegins as a thought that has been entertained. Someonehas wisely said, "Sow a thought, and you reap an action. Sow an action,and you reap a habit. Sow a habit, and you reap a character. Sow a character,and you reap a destiny." Everything begins with what we allow our minds todwell upon. Job understood this battle. In Job 31:1 he declared, "Imade a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?"Job recognized that what entered through his eyes could influence what remainedin his mind. How much more important is that principle today? Neverbefore in history have people carried around in their pockets devices that caninstantly expose them to almost every form of impurity imaginable. That is whywe must be more intentional than ever about guarding our minds. David prayed inPsalm 101:3, "I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes." Whata wonderful commitment! Imagine how different our lives would be if everybeliever prayed that prayer each morning. Paulgives similar instruction in Romans 13:14, "But put ye on the LordJesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the luststhereof." Notice he doesn't simply say, "Don't sin." Hesays, "Don't make provision for it." Don't feed it. Don't encourageit. Don't place yourself where temptation is invited to stay. Instead, fillyour mind with Christ. The wonderful truth is this: The more room God's Wordoccupies in your mind, the less room sinful thoughts have to remain. Lightalways drives out darkness. Truth always exposes lies. Purity always overcomescorruption. This does not mean that believers will never experience temptation.Even our Lord was tempted. But temptation is not sin. Sin begins when we chooseto entertain what God tells us to reject. Every time an impure thought entersyour mind, immediately bring it before the Lord. Replace it with Scripture.Turn your attention to Christ. Sing a hymn. Quote a Bible verse. Begin thankingGod for His goodness. The battle is won not merely by resisting evil but byfilling our minds with something far better. Perhapsthe greatest motivation for purity is not fear. It is love. When we truly lovethe Lord Jesus Christ, we want our thoughts to be pleasing to Him. David prayedin Psalm 19:14, "Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of myheart, be acceptable in Thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer." Whata wonderful prayer for each of us. May the meditation of our hearts bring joyto the heart of our Savior. Today, ask yourself this question: "Would I becomfortable if the Lord Jesus could visibly read every thought that passesthrough my mind today?" The wonderful news is that He already does. Andyet He loves us enough to forgive us, cleanse us, and transform us. As we yieldour minds to Him, He continues making us more like Himself. Remember, God'sdesire is not merely clean hands. He desires clean hearts, pure minds, and holylives.

AfterPaul shares what he did in verse 8, he continues in verse 9: "And befound in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but thatwhich is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God byfaith." Oh, what a wonderful verse! Paul has just told us that knowingChrist is the greatest treasure in all the world. Now he explains one of thegreatest blessings that comes from knowing Christ. When we trust Jesus, we arenot only brought into a relationship with Him, but we are given a righteousnessthat we could never produce ourselves.  Noticefirst Paul's negative statement: "Not having my own righteousness,which is from the law." Paul knew all about self-righteousness becauseif anyone could have boasted in religious achievements, it was Paul. Verses 4–6already list his impressive credentials. He was circumcised on the eighth day.He was of the nation of Israel. He was of the tribe of Benjamin. He was aHebrew of the Hebrews. He was a Pharisee. He was zealous. Outwardly, he wasblameless according to the law. Yet after meeting Jesus Christ, Paul realizedthat all these accomplishments could never make him righteous before a holyGod. Theprophet Isaiah said it this way in Isaiah 64:6: "But we are all like anunclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags." Whata humbling truth. The best that we can produce in our own strength falls farshort of God's perfect standard. You see, religion always says, "Tryharder." But the gospel tells us that Christ has already done what wecould never do. The problem is not that we need a little improvement. Theproblem is that we need a completely new standing before a holy God. Noticewhat Paul desired instead: "But that which is through faith in Christ,the righteousness which is from God by faith." This is whattheologians often call imputed righteousness. That simply means that when weplace our faith in Christ, God credits Christ's righteousness to our account. Thinkof it this way. On the cross, Jesus took our sin upon Himself. In salvation,God places Christ's righteousness upon us. Oh, my friend, what a gloriousexchange! In 2 Corinthians 5:21, we read: "For He made Him who knew nosin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God inHim." Jesuslived the perfect life that we could never live. He died the death that wedeserved to die. Then, when we trust Him, God declares us righteous in Hissight. Another word for that is justification. We are justified in the sight ofGod. This is not because of what we have done. It is because of what Christ hasdone. Noticehow many times faith appears in Philippians 3:9: "through faith inChrist" and "from God by faith." Faith is simply theempty hand that receives God's gift. We do not earn righteousness; we receiveit. We do not work for it; we trust Christ for it. We do not achieve it; Godgives it. Martin Luther called this "the great exchange." You knowhis struggle with self-righteousness until the day he discovered the truth ofjustification by faith. This truth ignited the Protestant Reformation andchanged the course of human history. Perhapsone of the most important phrases in this verse is found right at thebeginning: "And be found in Him." Everything Paul desired wasfound in Christ. His acceptance was in Christ. His righteousness was in Christ.His salvation was in Christ. His future hope was in Christ. That is still truetoday, my friend. The question is not whether you are religious enough. Thereal question is whether you are in Christ. Have you stopped trusting in yourown goodness, your own efforts, your own religious performance, and placed yourfaith completely and entirely in Jesus Christ? When you do that, at that verymoment, God places you in Christ through the baptism of His Holy Spirit (1Corinthians 12:13). Then you stand clothed in Christ's righteousness before aholy God.

Today we are continuing in Philippians chapter 2, lookingspecifically at verses 26–27. We are talking about Epaphroditus, a wonderfulservant of God from Philippi who was in Rome ministering to the Apostle Paul.We are going to find in this passage that he became very sick and almost died. Whenwe think about Epaphroditus, we are reminded of the four illustrations Paulgives us in Philippians 2 about being a servant, being a surrendered person,and having a submissive mind—the mind of Christ. Iam amazed at the many times in the book of Acts that Jesus is called God'sServant, the Servant of God. As you look through Scripture and history, you seemen like Moses. When Moses died, God referred to him in Joshua 1 as “Moses Myservant.” Then, at the end of the book of Joshua, when Joshua died, Godreferred to him as His servant, Joshua. Oh, my friend, great men and women ofGod are people who make themselves servants of God and serve Him by servingothers. Itis also what the Apostle Paul did. That is what Timothy did. And now we see itin the life of Epaphroditus as we read verses 26 and 27: “Since he waslonging for you all, and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick.For indeed he was sick almost unto death; but God had mercy on him, and notonly on him but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.” Thinkabout this for a moment. Epaphroditus was the one who was sick. In fact, henearly died. Yet he was not primarily concerned about himself. He was concernedthat the Philippians were worried about him. What an incredible spirit! Most ofus naturally focus on ourselves when we are hurting, suffering, or sick. We areoften not thinking about what others might be going through because of ourillness. But Epaphroditus was different. His concern remained fixed on others. Thisreminds us of Jesus in Gethsemane. Even while facing the cross, Jesus thoughtabout His disciples. Even while dying on Calvary, He thought about His mother. Asa matter of fact, the word translated “distressed” in verse 26 is verysignificant. Some translations render it “full of heaviness.” This isthe exact same Greek word used to describe Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane inMatthew 26:37: “…He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed His spiritwas exceedingly heavy.” The burden was so great that Jesus sweat greatdrops of blood..Oh,my friend, we see something of that same spirit in Epaphroditus. Even in hissickness, even when he was near death, his heart was burdened for the believersback in Philippi. He worried because they were worrying about him. But then weread these wonderful words: “God had mercy on him.” God had mercy onEpaphroditus. Whata reminder that we are in God's hands. Even in suffering and sickness, God issovereign over our health. Notice that the passage does not say Paul healedhim. Paul had been used by God to perform miracles. There were times when evenhandkerchiefs associated with Paul were used by God to bring healing. Yet thatis not what happened here. The Scripture simply says, “God had mercy onhim.” Godis sovereign over our health. God is sovereign over our circumstances. God issovereign over our future. Sometimes God heals. Sometimes He sustains us in themidst of our sickness. But God is always faithful. He will never allow us tosuffer beyond His purposes for our lives, and He will always provide the gracewe need for every trial. Today,perhaps you are carrying a burden. Maybe you are facing an illness. Maybe youhave come to a place of discouragement in your life. I want you to know thatjust as God had mercy on Epaphroditus, God has not forgotten you. He knows yourneed today. He knows your suffering. And even in the midst of your suffering,God can still use you to encourage others through your service. What awonderful blessing to know that God has a perfect plan, even in the midst ofsickness and hardship.

"Thatyou may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in themidst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights inthe world."  Whata description of the world in which we live today—a crooked and perversegeneration. The word crooked means twisted or bent away from God's standard.The word perverse means distorted or corrupted. Does that not describe ourworld today? Truth is being redefined. Morality is being distorted. Darkness iscelebrated while righteousness is mocked. We see it on every hand, all aroundus, throughout our world, and especially in our country, the USA. Yet God hascalled us not to hide from the world. He has called us to shine in it. Rememberin Matthew 5:14, Jesus said, "You are the light of the world."In verse 16, He said, "Let your light so shine before men, that theymay see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." Light doesnot complain about the darkness. It does not fight with the darkness. Myfriend, all it has to do is shine, and the darkness flees. Iam convinced with all my heart that if Christians truly let the light of JesusChrist shine—remember, He said, "I am the light of the world." NowHe lives in us. His light shines through us. It is not our light; it is Hislight, and it shines through us. If we would only let it shine, the darknesswould be pushed back. It would flee. You do not go into a room and curse thedarkness when it is dark. No, you simply turn on the light switch. As soon asthe light comes on, everything becomes plain and clear, and you can see acrossthe room. That is what we do as believers. Our light shines. Paulsays believers are to be blameless and harmless. This does not mean sinlessperfection, but lives marked by integrity and purity. The world should not seehypocrisy in our lives. Our lives should support the message that we preach. Oneof the greatest tragedies is when Christians damage their testimony throughbitterness, compromise, anger, or constant negativity. We just talked aboutthat in verse 14. Yousee, the darker the world becomes, the brighter faithful believers will shine. Thinkabout Daniel in Babylon, along with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Thinkabout Joseph in Egypt and the difference he made. Or even Noah before theflood. They lived in corrupt cultures, yet their lives stood out. The ApostlePaul and the early believers lived in a Roman culture that was dark, corrupt,and cruel. But, my friend, the light was shining. As it shone through theirlives, wonderful things took place that turned the world upside down. Yousee, God never intended for His people to blend into the darkness. Yet thatseems to be what so many churches and believers are trying to do today. Youcannot tell the difference between a believer and the world around them. NoticePaul says we shine in the midst of a crooked generation. We are in the world,but we are not of the world. That is why Jesus prayed in John 17 that theFather would not take believers out of the world, but that He would keep themfrom the evil one. Sohow do we shine in a practical way? We shine through holy living. We shinethrough kindness. We shine through truth. We shine through love. We shinethrough joy in suffering. We shine through forgiveness. We shine throughfaithfulness. A Christian filled with the HolySpirit of God becomes a lighthouse in a dark culture. Peoplearound us desperately need hope. They are confused, fearful, and empty. Manyhave never seen genuine Christianity lived out consistently.  Itrust God will use you and me to make a difference in the world in which welive, because someone is watching how we handle stress, disappointment,conflict, and suffering. Are you shining clearly today? Or are you blendinginto the darkness? Ask God to make your light shine as a bright testimony forJesus Christ. Remember this: the darker the night, the more visible the light. 

Today we come to one of the most sobering and glorious truthsin all of Scripture. Philippians 2:10 says this: “that at the name of Jesusevery knee will bow.” Notice—not some knees, not many knees, but everyknee. The entire universe will one day acknowledge the lordship of JesusChrist. Right now, some people debate about Jesus. They reject Him. They mockHim. They ignore Him. But the day is coming when all debate will end forever.Every created being will bow before Him. NowPaul divides this into three different groups: “those in heaven, those onearth, and those under the earth”.Whatdoes this include?  Those in heaven”refers to the angels and the redeemed believers already in glory. Imagineheaven today—a multitude of angels worshiping Jesus continually. Revelation5:11–12 gives us a picture of this. When John had that vision of heaven, theywere saying, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain.” The saints in heaven bowjoyfully because they know the greatness of the Savior. ThenPaul says, “those on earth.” This includes every living person on earth. Kingswill bow, presidents will bow, celebrities will bow, atheists will bow,religious leaders will bow. All will bow one day before the Lord Jesus Christ.No earthly power or fame will matter at that moment. The most powerful peoplein history will stand equal before Jesus Christ. Thenhe says, “those under the earth.” This refers to the realm of the dead andthose awaiting the final judgment. This no doubt includes all those who havegone into eternity without Christ, and whose souls even now are in a terribleplace in the heart of the earth called Sheol, Hades, or hell. Read Luke chapter 16 and Revelation20:11–14.Whata terrible day that judgment will be. But every knee will bow. No one is goingto escape this reality. The tragedy is that many who refuse to bow willinglynow will bow unwillingly later. Today is the day of grace, and today is the dayof salvation. Romans 10:9 reminds us, “If you confess with your mouth theLord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, youwill be saved.” God invites people today to come willingly now inrepentance and faith. But one day, submission will no longer be voluntary.Every knee will bow because Jesus Christ truly is Lord. Thistruth should affect how we live even today. First, it should produce worship.If heaven is centered around Christ, our lives should be too. Worship is notmerely singing in church. It is surrendering every area of our lives to JesusChrist. Second, this truth should produce humility. Pride melts when weremember that every human being will one day bow before Christ. The ground islevel at the foot of the cross, and we too will bow before Him along with allcreation. Third,this truth should produce urgency in evangelism. People around us desperatelyneed the gospel—friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers. They are living nowas though Christ does not matter, but eternity says otherwise. One day everyperson you know will stand before Christ. This should burden our hearts topray, to witness, and to share the gospel while there is still time and hope. Finally,this truth gives us as believers great hope. Right now, evil seems strong.Truth seems attacked. The world appears chaotic. But Jesus Christ wins. Historyis not spinning out of control. It is moving toward the visible reign of JesusChrist. As we said yesterday, one day all the world will come to Jesus. It iscoming to Jesus and every knee will bow before Him as Lord.  Believers today joyfully bow before the authority of Jesus Christ.Will you join us today in bowing before Him even now? Lord Jesus, we bow before You today as the King of Kings andLord of Lords. Thank You for Your mercy and Your grace. Help us to livesurrendered lives that honor You. Give us boldness to share the gospel withothers before that coming day when every knee will bow. We pray this in Jesus'name. Amen.

Isaiah 50: 4-9a; Rs psalm 69: 8-10.21bcd-22.31.33-34; Matthew 26: 14-25.THE CHALLENGES FROM JUDAS ISCARIOT  The theme for our meditation today is: The Challengesfrom Judas Iscariot. Judas was one of the 12 apostles of Jesus who died earlierthan the rest eleven, and that was a very shameful death with very badreputation. We say this in order to distinguish it with the tragic deathsexperienced by almost all the other apostles who in the following decades diedtragically as martyrs of the Church. The tragic death of Judas was a veryundignified death. This story happened more than 2000 years ago,precisely when the death sentence was handed down to Jesus through an unjusttrial under the Judaism law. We who remember this event especially in everyyear around the holy week season, see it as a lesson rich with values to learnfrom. All of these are the challenges from Judas Iscariot that we need to faceand benefit them for our growth of faith in Jesus Christ. The most important challenge from Judas for us todayis the love for money or other material richness. A lifestyle that relies onlyon money, or a life is only measured by material richness of the world, iscommonly known as materialism. From this lifestyle arises various other crimessuch as theft, corruption, discrimination, violence and war. We, as goodfollowers of Christ, certainly do not want to suffer the same fate as Judas,just because we strive only for money or material things, that will lead us toa final emptiness and undignified death. The challenge of politicizing religion for us isanother important element to ponder upon. Both Judas and the other apostles andalso the Jewish leaders did have their common political interest. They wantedto have a Messiah, the great political figure for their nation and people. Withthe help of that Messiah, they imagined to have freedom from the Romancolonials. But they misunderstood and were fooled. Jesus was not for them. Inthe social life of our country, we are challenged to completely avoid the politicizationof religion. There must be no political influence in it, nor should a life offaith impose any political ways to simply divide the community of believers. Another challenge that we can learn from this event iswhat played by Judas, namely hypocrisy. The strategy was to hug Jesus, kissHim, then send a message to the executioners and the Jews to arrest Jesus. Whata play of hypocrisy can be made by anyone of us here, who deceive friends,families, relatives, neighbors, town, religion, nation and homeland only for apersonal gain! Whatever motivation for this act, it is always verymaterialistic and worldly. One can intentionally and easily deny who and whathe or she is supposed to protect and respect. We must fight and overcome allthese challenges in our lives today. Let'spray. In the name of the Father ... O Jesus Christ, put in us courage and goodwill that we may avoid the attitudes of Judas in us so that we can live a holylife like You. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit ... Inthe name of the Father  ...

Alreadywe talked about the office of apostleship. Thespiritual gift and office of evangelists means that these are those in thechurch who “bear the good news”. That's what evangelist means. “Evangel”, “Abearer of good news”. Someone who takes the good news of the salvation that'savailable through Jesus Christ to the world that's lost and dying and on itsway into an endless eternity to a terrible place called hell. This gift iscrucial to the outreach and expansion of the church.  As I have looked at this passage and thoughtabout the spiritual gifting of the church, I want to remind you every gift, those17 gifts that were given to the baby church, that listed in Romans 12, 1Corinthians 12-14, and here in Ephesians 4, were all necessary for the localchurch, so that it could be a healthy and growing church that fellowships, thatworships, that evangelizes, that disciples, that builds up one another,ministers and cares for one another and changes the culture and the world inwhich it's placed. Oh, how awesome that is.  Ipersonally believe that every believer has at least one primary gift. I believethese primary gifts are the seven that are listed in Romans 12. You have atleast one of those as your primary gift. But in some since we call all practicethe gift of serving, the gift of giving, the gift of ministering. We all canpractice most of the gifts, but we have that one primary gift.  Ithas also been very interesting to me that the way we look at things in thechurch, and respond to challenges that the church might have, will be based onthe spiritual giftedness that God has given to each one of us. But all thegifts are necessary. They are very necessary for the church to be a healthychurch. Every member exercising their particular gift. When you're exercisingyour gift, instead of wearing you out, there's something that energizes you,that frees you, that gives you fulfillment and contentment, and a sense ofpurpose in the church. It is vitally necessary and very important for you toknow your spiritual gift.  Whenwe look at spiritual gift and office of the evangelist, we might think ofpeople like Peter who on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2, who preached and 3,000souls are saved. He is the main spokesman for the church in the early chaptersof Acts. He is sent to Cornelius in Acts 10 and wins the first Gentile to the Lord.We even think the Apostle Paul had must have had this gift of evangelism. Laterhe would write to the church at Corinth how, “some plant and some water, butGod gives the increase” (1 Corinthians 3:7-8).  Paultold Timothy, who I believe had the gift of pastor, serving in the office ofpastor in many of the churches that Paul planted, and yet he told him do thework of an evangelist. In other words, all of us can be witnesses for JesusChrist. At the same time understanding and exercising our individual Spiritual gifts. Ithink of men in days past, like my dad, J. O. Grooms, D.L. Moody, Billy Sunday,Baily Smith, and Billy Graham, and today men like Rick Via and Steeven Kumar, whoobviously have that Spiritual gift, and fulfilled the office of evangelist, andhave been used to spread the Gospel around the world. We need these wonderfulmen of God as they go forth, and they bring new believers into the Kingdom.Then the pastors and teachers come in, and disciple and grow them. What awonderful thing it is to see God functioning and working through the localchurch of believers to glorify His son Jesus Christ.  Whata wonderful passage of scripture reminding us that each of us has a place inthe church. May the Lord help us to discover our spiritual gifts, and then alsoexercise them today in the body of Christ. Godbless!

Todaywe're looking at Ephesians 4:4-6 where the Apostle Paul is giving us the sevenspiritual realities that unite us in Jesus Christ. There must be a foundationaltruth that makes us one. Our oneness is based on and because of theseseven realities that are given to us at the moment we trust Jesus Christ as ourpersonal Lord Savior.  Atthe moment of our salvation, we were baptized into the body of Jesus Christ. Read1 Corinthians 12, where Paul is dealing with a church that's in tremendousdivision. One of their divisions is over the matter of spiritual gifts and whohas the best gifts. Paul deals with this subject by taking them back to thefoundational truth of the Holy Spirit and His giving the gifts of the Spirit,that are given to every member in the body.  “For as the body is one and has manymembers, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, soalso is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--whetherJews or Greeks, whether slaves or free--and have all been made to drink intoone Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:13-14). Paul uses the analogy of the humanbody to describe this foundational truth to help us to understand it. I only haveone body. I don't have three bodies or four bodies different bodies. I don'thave the option to jump into this body today, and tomorrow I wake up and say, “Iwant to dress up in this next body”.  No,I only have one body God has given it to me not only duration of this life onearth, but He's given it to me for eternity. One day God will glorify even thissame frail fallen body for eternity. My friend, this is a foundational truth.Just as the body is one, it has many members. I have hands, I have eyes, feet.Paul goes through those different aspects of the body and what they individuallydo, but it's one body they work together. Eachmember of our body helps and cares for the other members. They are not jealousof each other because it is one body. This is the same spiritual reality thatis ours in Christ, the moment of our salvation as it says in verse 12 and 13: “Foras the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body,being many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were allbaptized into one body”. Nowback to Ephesians 4:4 where Paul writes, “one body, one Spirit”. There'sonly one Holy Spirit. The same Holy Spirit that dwells lives in me, lives inyou. This is what gives us unity, one body, one Spirit, working for theselfsame purpose to build up the body, the church of Jesus Christ, to exhortone another encourage one another so much more as we see the day approaching. Thattakes us to the next spiritual reality. “Just as you were called in one hopeof your calling.” This “one hope of your calling” has to do with thesecond coming of Jesus Christ. It is also called “the blessed hope” (Titus2:13). We are looking forward to Jesus coming one day. Paul is talking aboutthis also in Romans 8:23-25: “Not only that, but we also who have thefirstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerlywaiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. For we were saved in thishope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for whathe sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it withperseverance”. Wewere called to look forward to this “one hope” that one day Jesus is comingback for us! 1 John 3:2-3 promises it this way: “Beloved, now we arechildren of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we knowthat when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. Andeveryone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure”. Whata blessed and glorious hope is ours today!!! So,the spiritual reality is: one body, one Spirit, one hope. We have fourmore to look at over the next few days. Godbless!

Todaywe're looking at the last two verses in Ephesians chapter 3. Along withPhilippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”, theseare two of the most quoted verses in the Bible that we hear when people finishtheir prayer. “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above allthat we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be gloryin the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen”. Whata powerful ending to this chapter!Paulseems to want to use every word possible to convey to us the vastness of God'spower as found in Jesus Christ. He has ended each of the two previous chapterswith praise to God for His great victory in Christ. He tells us that Christ'spower is so great He arose from the dead and ascended far above all (1:19-23).He teaches us that His power is so great He has reconciled Jews and Gentiles toeach other, and to God; and that He is now building a temple to the eternalglory of God (2:19-22). But in the paragraph before us, Paul shares theexciting truth that this, far “above all power”, is available to us! Itis even "above all that we ask or think." In other words, thepower of Christ, like the love of Christ, is beyond human understanding ormeasurement. And this is just the kind of power you and I need if we are towalk and war in victory. Theword "power" is again dunamis, which we met back in Ephesians 3:7;and "working" is energeia (energy) found in Ephesians 1:11, 19; 2:2;3:7; and 4:16. Some power is dormant; it is available, but not being used, suchas the power stored in a battery. But God's energy is effectual power—power atwork in our lives. This power works in us, in the inner man (Ephesians 3:16). RememberPhilippians 2:13, “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to doof his good pleasure”. We can't even begin to imagine what it means that theeternal, creator God of the universe, through His Holy Spirit, is working inus!!!!! I'llnever forget I had a car for years that when it got cold below 30° the crazycar wouldn't start. Somehow or another, a disconnection took place between thebattery and the starter as I tried to start the car. I'm telling you, myfriend, in Christ Jesus, all the resurrection power of the Lord Jesus Christ, allthe power of the Holy Spirit that dwells in us, all the power that God wants usto have to live and do what He wants us to do, to be what He wants us to be, toaccomplish what He wants us to accomplish, is available in us. Ifwe could only understand and believe this and comprehend this! But our lack of experiencingthis power being released in our lives is because a disconnection has takenplace. Maybe, like my car, we get cold in our Christian experience. We're notreading our Bible. We're not praying as we should. We've lost fellowship withthe Lord. We've allowed some sin or corruption to get in our lives and heartslike the corrosion on the battery cables. I'm telling you my friend, when thattakes place we lose that connection. The power is still there, but we have lostthe connection because of unbelief, unconfessed sin, careless living and becauseof lack of love or grace that we need in our lives. Myfriend, oh my friend, today realize the available power, the resurrectionpower, the power that raised Jesus from the dead. God Himself is at work in usif we'd only allow Him to flow through us for His glory. Note in verse 20 “ToHim be glory in the church by Christ Jesus”. This power is not given to usso we can build bigger churches, live better lives, or even to do a greater workfor Christ. No, it's all to the glory of Jesus Christ. That power is available butwhen we want to use it selfishly, God doesn't give it to us. He doesn't releaseit within us. But when we live for the glory of God, oh, awesome and wonderfuland powerful things take place for His kingdom's sake.  

Ifthere's one thing everyone needs, is looking for, and desires, it is to havepeace. To have peace within themselves, peace with God, and peace with thosearound them. But it often appears that many people today are bent on havingwar, at enmity with others, with hatred, malice, anger and violence in their heartsand lives. There is no peace in their lives, and they live to destroy any peacein the world around them. The Bible describes it this way in Isaiah 57:20-21, “Butthe wicked are like the troubled sea, When it cannot rest, Whose waters cast upmire and dirt. "There is no peace," Says my God, "for thewicked."  Theirhearts are against God, so their hearts are against everyone around them, andin a sense even themselves. But I believe that deep inside every individualthere is a desire, there is a yearning for peace. The only way to make thatpeace is with God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 5:1 tells us: “Havingtherefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our LordJesus Christ.” That's what we're talking about in these verses before ustoday in Ephesians 2:16-18.  Rememberin verses 11-15, Paul was dealing with the Gentiles basically and thereconciliation they needed and could now experience between themselves and theJews now that they were in the same church, in the same body of Christ. Now we'rein Christ (v. 13). Before we were aliens and strangers but now, we're a holynation. Colossians 1:19-22 speaks of this very thing: “For it pleased theFather that in Him all the fullness should dwell, speaking of Jesus. By Him,Jesus, to reconcile all things to Himself. By Him, whether things on earth orthings in heaven. having made peace through the blood of His cross, and you whowere once alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now has Hereconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy andblameless, and above reproach in His sight.” How wonderful, how powerful isthat? We'reno longer strangers because we are now in the family of God along with theJewish people. We had no hope. Now we've been called into one hope. We werewithout God, but now through Christ God is our Father. Nowin verses 16-18, Paul is talking about how both Jews and Gentiles needreconciliation as sinners with God.  Paul'sletter to the Colossians in chapter 2:13-14 says it this way: “You beingdead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alivetogether with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out thehandwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us, andHe has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to His cross." Inother words, the law tells us we're sinners. The law tells us that we arecondemned. God is a holy God and He must punish sin. God also at the same timeis a God of love. He's a God who wants us to know peace and have peace.  That'swhy in Ephesians 2:17, Paul writes: “He came and He preached peace.” Didyou notice that in verse 14 it says Jesus Christ is our peace. In verse15, He made peace because of the blood of His cross between us and God.Then in verse 17, He preached peace. Remember the angels saying to theshepherds that day on the hillside, "Peace on earth and good willtoward men”, is the message of Jesus Christ to all world of sinners."(Luke 2:13-14).   Ifyou want peace, the only peace you'll ever find and the only peace the worldwill ever find is in the person and ministry and work of Jesus Christ throughHis Holy Spirit that can be in all of our hearts at the same time. “Forthrough Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father” (v. 18).  Whata wonderful message for us today. We have a God that can take care of theenmity, bring reconciliation, and bring us back into a place where we can havefellowship one with another. Today,I trust you're experiencing that peace and joy in yourself, and with God, andwith those around you.

Welcometo Pastor's Chat today. Well, this morning I have a special prayer request foryou. Today I am leaving along with my son Jonathan and a nephew Jason Rigginsfor Egypt, Jordan, and Slovakia. I'll be driving this morning to Raleigh tocatch my first flight up to Dulles. And there we'll meet with Jonathan andJason. And then from there, this evening, we'll be flying to Egypt where we'llland on Sunday evening. We will have a couple days in Egypt to tour with someEgyptian ministry friends. We will also be preparing for our tour that we're doingOctober the 14th with a wonderful group of people, who are very excited aboutthe upcoming trip. I'msaying all that to tell you that I might not be able to do a pastor's chat eachday as we'll be spending many hours in flight and also in foreign countries andmight not always have good internet connections. I'll do what I can to keep youupdated on our trip and if possible, post some Pastor Chats. On Tuesdayafternoon, we'll be leaving Egypt to go to Jordan where we'll spend at least a coupledays and there visit with some of our ministry partners. We hope to spend sometime encouraging some of the leaders there that we work with in the refugeeministry in Amman, Jordan.  FromAmman we'll be flying to Slovakia to spend a few days with my sister Janet and herhusband Charles Baldis. They have been faithful missionaries for over 30 years.The occasion that really prompted this whole trip is a wedding I have been askedto speak at by my niece Tina Baldis. She has also served faithfully with herparents over all these years. We are very excited that on Saturday, Tina isgetting married to a wonderful young man named Jozef Ličko. Iam looking forward to this trip with my nephew and my son. And we're excitedabout the divine appointments that we're going to have along the way. We askfor your special prayers for traveling mercies and for these divineappointments. Pray that God gives us open doors of opportunities to share withthe people that we will providentially meet along the way. We always have thatgreat privilege and see miraculous things that the Lord does and we're lookingforward to that. We need your prayers. Your prayers will help us have thoseopen doors. They will give us boldness to speak and give us wisdom to know whatto say, how to say it and when to say it.  Itis a volatile world in the Middle East. And we are there to help bring thepeace of God into those different locations and places in people's lives byshowing them the way through Jesus Christ. Just the fact that we're there,there will be more light in the spiritual darkness there because Christ livesin us.  Andthat's what we're talking about today in Ephesians 2:5. We talked yesterday inverse 4 about how “God because of His great love with which He loved us”,has provided mercy and grace that saves us through the blood of the cross ofJesus Christ. Now we find here in verse 5, even when we were dead in our trespassesand sins, God made us alive together with Christ. Not only did the Lord JesusChrist love us, He has made us alive. The King James version says that “Hequickened us”, which means the same thing. He made us alive.  Theway He makes us alive is through the gospel, through the Word of God. In the Gospels,it's recorded that Jesus raised at least three people from the dead. Rememberthe widow's son in Luke 7:11-17, Jairus's daughter in Luke 8:49-56, and Lazarusin John 11. In each case, Jesus spoke the Word and His Word brought forth life.The Bible tells us in Hebrews 4:12 that “the Word of God is quick” which meansit is alive. It's living and it's powerful.  Whata glorious truth!!!! “God made us alive together with Christ”!!!  We are so grateful and excited about all that God is doing here inAmerica and around the world. Keep on praying!!!!

The verses in this chapter talkabout living Jesus Christ. Remember we said in chapter one we talk about knowingJesus Christ. Before we can live for Christ, we need to have our eyes of ourunderstanding open to the knowledge of God. After we begin to know and understand our position in Christ then we can beginto live Jesus Christ. Inchapter one, Paul has described our spiritual possessions in Christ. Now hespeaks in chapter two about our spiritual position in Christ. First, heexplains what God has done for all sinners in general; then he explains whatGod did for the Gentiles in particular. The sinner who trusts Christ has beenraised and seated on the throne (Ephesian 2:1-10), and believing Jews andGentiles have been reconciled and set into the temple (Ephesians 2:11-22). Whata miracle of God's grace! We are taken out of the great graveyard of sin andplaced into the throne room of glory. Todaywe will begin to look at these first three verse of Ephesians 2: “And you Hemade alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walkedaccording to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power ofthe air, the spirit that now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom alsowe all once conducted ourselves in the lust of our flesh, fulfilling thedesires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath justas the others.” Here Paul gives us a full-length picture of the terriblespiritual condition of the unsaved person. Note his characteristics: Firstthing Paul wants us to understand is sin's work against us! Paul gives thespiritual condition of the unsaved person. First, he notes that we are dead intrespasses and sin. Of course this means we're spiritually dead. We're unableto understand and appreciate spiritual things. We have no spiritual lifewhatsoever. We can talk about God. We can talk about the Bible. We can evenhave it memorized. But the truth is there is no spiritual life in us aside fromthe fact that when we get saved the Holy Spirit, the life of God Himself comesto live within us. But before then, we are dead in trespasses and sins. We cando nothing to please God. We'relike a dead man. Just as a person physically dead does not respond to physicalstimuli, so a person spiritually dead is unable to respond to spiritual things.A corpse does not hear the conversation going on in the funeral parlor. He hasno appetite for food or drink; he feels no pain; he is dead. Just so with theinner man of the unsaved person. His spiritual faculties are not functioning,and they cannot function until God gives him life. The cause of this spiritualdeath is "trespasses and sins" (Ephesians 2:1). "Thewages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). In the Bible, death basicallymeans "separation," not only physically, as the spirit separated fromthe body (James 2:26), but also spiritually, as the spirit separated from God(Isaiah 59:2). Myfriend, the unbeliever is not sick. He is dead. He doesn't need resuscitation.He needs a resurrection. All lost sinners are dead, and the only differencebetween one sinner and another is the state of decay. The lost derelict on skidrow may be more decayed outwardly than the unsaved society leader, but both aredead in sin—and one corpse cannot be more dead than another! This means thatour world is one vast graveyard, filled with people who are dead while theylive (1 Tim. 5:6). We need to understand that's our position before oursalvation. And sin works against us and we're dead in these trespasses andsins.  Oh,how we ought to rejoice in the fact that one day we met Jesus Christ if you'rea believer. And if you do not understand spiritual things, there's a reason forit. We never really appreciate our health until we have experienced a terriblesickness. And we will never appreciate and be grateful for our life in Jesus Christuntil we realize how dead we were in our trespasses and sins! 

Remember,the theme of Ephesians is about the riches that we have in Christ Jesus. We arein Christ the moment we trust Him to be our Lord and Savior. The Holy Spiritbaptizes us into the body of Christ (Romans 6:3). In the first long sentence,verse 2-6, we have seen how God the Father has given us at least threewonderful rich blessings. The first blessing was we are “chosen”. We are“chosen… to be holy and without blame before Him in love” (v. 4). Secondly,we are “adopted” into His family as His children (v. 5). We appreciatethe fact that we can go to Him as our Father in heaven.  Next,we are blessed with being “accepted in the beloved” (v. 6). No matterwhat happens in our life, or what goes on around us, God has accepted us notbecause of our goodness, our good deeds, or our perfection. No. He's acceptedus in Christ Jesus forever. And we have an advocate in heaven, Jesus Christ therighteous, who is always there interceding on our behalf. We are accepted, myfriend. What great blessings from God the Father.  Now,in verses 7-12, we see where we have blessings from God the Son. Now, we mustalso remember that each Person of the Godhead does not work independently ofthe other. No, my friend, they all work together to make possible everythingthat pertains to our salvation. But each Person of the Trinity, God the Father,God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, are still one. And each person has a specialministry to perform and a special deposit to make into our lives. Through theministry and finished work of Jesus the Son we are blessed with being redeemed. Theword redeem basically means to “purchase to set free by paying the price”.During the time of Christ and the apostles there were 60 million slaves in theRoman Empire and they were bought and sold like pieces of furniture. But a man couldpurchase a slave and set him free. And this is what Jesus did for us. In theNew Testament there are three words that are in the Greek that highlight thedifferent aspects of this redemption.  Thefirst Greek word is agorazō which means “to buy” or “to purchase” andespecially typically in a marketplace setting. It describes the aspect ofredemption as the initial acquisition of buying of humanity from the slavemarket of sin where Christ pays the price by His blood to claim believers asHis own (1 Corinthians 6:19-20; Revelation 5:9). Colossians 1:13-14 also tellsus: “He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into thekingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood,the forgiveness of sins.” Thenext Greek word is exagorazō, a compound form meaning “to buy out of” or “toredeem from”. This emphasizes the aspect of permanently removing the purchasedindividual from the market or the bondage of sin. The individual is no longersubject to resale or the curse of the law, delivering them from ongoingenslavement to sin.  Thenthe last Greek word is lutroō, which means “to ransom”, “to loose” or “to setfree” because the ransom price has been paid. And it focuses on the aspect ofcomplete liberation, emancipation from captivity, your release from the powerand the guilt and the shame of sin. You are set free.  Thatis what it means when it says in the scripture, we are redeemed by His blood. “InHim we have redemption through His blood”. Redemption is only possible throughHis blood. Jesus paid the price. He satisfied God's wrath for sin. Now myfriend, we are set free to love Him, to live for Him, to be free to serve Him,to serve others, to love God, and to love others like we should.  Ilove the old hymn by Fanny Crosby: “Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it! Redeemedby the blood of the Lamb! Redeemed through His infinite mercy—His child, andforever, I am.” Whata wonderful, wonderful blessing we have from Jesus Christ. Todaywe're looking at Luke 24:25-35. Luke is the only gospel that tells us the storyabout these two men on the road to Emmaus. While they're walking, they'reconfused, troubled, sad, discouraged, and disappointed. Jesus did not fulfillthe expectations they had about setting up the kingdom and running out theRomans authorities. They had heard that Jesus had resurrected, but they did notbelieve. My friends, when we don't believe in the resurrection like we should,even as believers, we're going to be disappointed, discouraged, and sad. Sowhat is the answer to that?  Wefind it here in this passage. Jesus talked to them about the Scriptures, Moses,the prophets, and all the things in them concerning Himself. Then He acted asif He would go further when they got to the village of Emmaus. But theyconstrained Him and said, "No, it's getting evening. Stay with us."So He did, and what happened next, Luke say it best: “As He sat at the tablewith them, He took bread, blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them. Thentheir eyes were opened, and they knew Him, and He vanished from their sight.They said to one another, "Did not our hearts burn within us while He talkedwith us on the road and while He opened the scriptures to us?" So theyrose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem and found the eleven and thosewho were with them gathered together, saying, "The Lord is risen indeedand has appeared to Simon." They told about the things that had happenedon the road and how He was known to them in the breaking of bread.” Whata powerful message for you and me today. It was as they heard the scriptures,as Jesus talked and conversed with them and fellowshipped with them, theirhearts began to burn. Even though they didn't see Him exactly as He really is,the Son of God, the risen Savior, their hearts still burned from the Scriptures.Then as they sat at bread with Him and He broke it, their eyes were opened.  Myfriend, the answer to sad, discouraged, disappointed hearts is when you spendtime with Jesus. Spend time with Jesus in His Word, meditate upon Him, thinkabout Him, and listen to Him. Your heart will begin to burn, and that's when Heopens your eyes, makes Himself known to you in the scripture, and you have thatreal fellowship with the Lord. This is what we need, “Just a closer walkwith Jesus”, as the old hymn says. Spend that time with Him.  That'swhat you and I should desire more than anything else as we open up the Scripturein the morning, not just to read our devotional Scriptures, but to spend timewith Jesus in His Word. As they ran back the eight miles to Jerusalem to theUpper Room so excited that they couldn't wait to tell the other disciples whatthey had experienced. I'll guarantee you if every church member spent time withJesus during the week in the word of God, when they came together on Sundaymorning, they would not have a dead service.  Whenthey got back to the service, the other eleven and many of the other followersof Jesus were all excited about what had happened. They exclaimed that Simonhad also seen Jesus. They were all saying, "Jesus indeed is risen. He hasappeared." What a great service they had back then, rejoicing in the risenSavior. Would to God that would happen in all our churches each Sunday. I havea feeling that he crowds would come like they did on the day of Pentecost.  Haveyour experienced a “burning heart” recently? When was the last time that theHoly Spirit opened your eyes to see Jesus in the Word?  Godbless!

Welcometo Pastor's Chat. Today, we're continuing in Luke chapter 22, looking at verses35 through 38. Jesus is with the disciples in the upper room, or in the processof leaving for the Garden of Gethsemane. Judas has already gone to gather Romansoldiers to arrest Jesus and take Him to trial. It's Thursday evening, but inthe Jewish calendar, it's Friday, and Jesus knows He will be crucified. He ispreparing His disciples for this time, having already warned them ofpersecution and tribulation in John chapter 16, saying, “Don't let your heartbe troubled. You believe in God, believe also in Me. I'm going away, but I'llcome again, and I'm sending the Holy Spirit.” These things were said in theupper room, as recorded in John's Gospel. Now,Jesus is preparing His disciples for spiritual warfare in a new dispensation.After telling Peter in verses 31-34, “…Satan has asked for you, that he maysift you as wheat…. And before the rooster crows you  will deny three times that you know Me”, Jesusnow says in verse 35, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, andsandals, did you lack anything?” They replied, “Nothing.” He's referring towhen He sent the twelve to preach the gospel of the kingdom to the lost sheepof Israel, proclaiming, “The King is here; Jesus the Messiah is here—receiveHim, trust Him, believe Him.” They lacked nothing because God miraculouslyprovided as they preached throughout Israel. ThenHe says, “But now,” signaling a shift to a new time. He's going away, andthey'll be left to take the gospel of grace to the world, not just to Israelbut to the Gentiles. “He who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise aknapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. For Isay to you that this which is written must be accomplished in Me: ‘And He wasnumbered with the transgressors.' For the things concerning Me have an end.”  Jesusis quoting Isaiah 53:12, saying, “I'm numbered with the transgressors. I'mgoing to the cross to pay the price for the sins of the world. Somethingdifferent is coming—I'll be resurrected and leave, but you'll take this gospelto the world.” All things concerning Him will be accomplished; on the cross,His final words, “It is finished,” marked the completion of Hissubstitutionary, atoning work. Jesus is signaling the end of the dispensation ofOld Covenant as He fulfill all the prophesies and the demands of the Law bybecoming the final sacrifice for the sins of the world. He is about to finishthe Old and bring in the New! The disciples, still not grasping His meaning,say, “Look, Lord, here are two swords.” Jesus responds, “It is enough,” notmeaning that two swords are sufficient to fight the Roman soldiers inGethsemane, but rather, He was saying, “We're done talking—you'll understandlater.” It was only, after 40 days of studying the Word, and spending time withthe Lord between the resurrection and His Ascension, and 10 more days in  prayers in the Upper Room, and after the HolySpirit came upon them on Pentecost, did they begin to comprehend what Jesus wastalking about.  What Jesus is basically saying to them was,“Set aside the message of the gospel of the kingdom for another time. Now youwill go forth with the sword of the Spirit. You cannot fight this battle in theflesh—it must be through the power of prayer and the Word of God, with the HolySpirit working in and through you.” Whata powerful passage. Remember how Paul said it in 2 Corinthians 10:4, “Forthe weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling downstrongholds.”  And in Philippians3:1-11, Paul proclaimed that he had no confidence in the flesh but in the resurrectionpower of Jesus Christ! Today,let's make sure that we are serving Jesus in the Spirit, not in the flesh. Godbless!

Todaywe're looking at Luke chapter 22. We believe this chapter describes the eventsthat took place on Thursday of Passover Week and what we also call PassionWeek. This is the day that Jesus would prepare for the Passover with Hisdisciples because He knew He was the Passover Lamb. Remember the story of theExodus when the Passover lamb was killed, the blood was sprinkled on thedoorpost and lintel, and the firstborn would be spared. The death angel would “passover” that house because the blood had been applied. Whata beautiful picture when Jesus shows up three and a half years earlier and Johnthe Baptist said, "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of theworld." The next day John sees Jesus coming again and simply says, "Beholdthe Lamb of God." (John 1:29-35). Today I pray that you and I willbehold Jesus, the Passover Lamb of God, submissive and obedient to His Father andis led as a lamb to the slaughter (Isaiah 53:7 - “He was oppressed and Hewas afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to theslaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not Hismouth”). And Who takes away our sin, gives us forgiveness, heals us, andgrants us eternal life.  ThenI pray that you will behold Jesus, the Passover Lamb of God, in His beauty,courage, strength, death, burial, and resurrection. What a beautiful picture wehave of Jesus in His great love for us, fulfilling John 3:16: "For God soloved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Himwould not perish but have everlasting life." My friend, that word"whosoever" includes you and me.  I'mconvinced Jesus Christ and God love every person on planet Earth with aneternal love, and He sent His only Son so that “whosoever—anyone”—can be saved.No one is predestined to be saved or lost; we are all called to salvation. Thedifference is we must choose whether we will believe in Jesus as the Son ofGod, the Lamb of God who alone can take away our sin. When we repent, believeand receive Jesus as our only hope, we discover we are the chosen ones who believed,chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world, according to Ephesianschapter 1. We have an eternal choice that everyone has: to trust Christ orreject Him. He is Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God. Jesusknows all this. He knows why He came into the world—"not to condemn theworld but that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:16-21). We knowmen love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil. ThePharisees, scribes, and chief priests rejected Christ because of hypocrisy, andas Pilate points out, because of envy and jealousy. They loved the darkness of theirreligion and sin. And Jesus was infringing on their religious business. Jesusalways challenges religion and religious business. He came to seek and savethat which was lost. Today, trust Him. Duringthis time of Passover, some 100,000 to 300,000 Jewish pilgrims would flood intoJerusalem. Historian Josephus said 250,000 lambs would be slaughtered for apopulation of 500,000 to a million Jewish people. On this Thursday, Jesus ispreparing for the Passover while the scribes, Pharisees, and chief priests areplotting to kill Him. Judas, filled with Satan's animosity and hatred forChrist and God, is led to betray Jesus. This is all taking place as Jesusprepares to be that Passover Lamb. We see the preparation for the supper takeplace in verses 7 through 13 as they prepare for this special commemorative meal!Today,let us remember to get rid of the leaven of sin and bitterness in our heartsand come cleanly to the feast of the Passover with our hearts open, rememberingthe death of Jesus Christ till He comes.Godbless!

41Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, 42 saying, "If youhad known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for yourpeace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.  As I mentioned yesterday, I'm in Kingsland, Georgia. Iprerecorded this video for you, and I trust it'll be a blessing. This morning,I'll be attending a worship service with Edith at Kings Bay Submarine Base to hear my son Nathan,a Navy chaplain, speak. Let'scontinue in Luke chapter 19:28-48, which take place on what we call Palm Sundaymorning, and in verses 35-44, Jesus is entering Jerusalem, riding a colt. Thecrowd comes out to meet Him, proclaiming, “Blessed is the King who comes in thename of the Lord.” They are singing praises, throwing palm branches and clothesin front of the colt Jesus is riding. The Pharisees criticize, saying, “Rebukethese people.” Then, in verse 41, as Jesus draws near, He sees the city andweeps over it. Ican picture this, having been there many times. I can imagine seeing Jesus comingdown the Mount of Olives with a clear view of Jerusalem. The crowd isrejoicing, but Jesus is weeping. In verse 42, He says, “If you had known,even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! Butnow they are hidden from your eyes. For days will come upon you when yourenemies will build an embankment around you, surround you, and close you in onevery side, and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; andthey will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know thetime of your visitation.” Jesusgoes from this rejoicing and celebration of the people, to weeping overJerusalem. No matter where He looks, He finds a cause to weep. Looking back, Hesees how the nation wasted its opportunities to receive Him as the Messiah,ignorant of the time of His visitation. Looking within, He sees spiritualignorance and blindness in the people's hearts.  Theyshould have known who He was. God gave them His Word with all the prophecies concerningHis first coming and had also sent John the Baptist to prepare the way. Jesus Himselfhad been preaching for three and a half years for the nation to repent because theKingdom of Heaven was at hand. And by His miracles and healings and power overthe demons, the elements of nature, manifesting Himself to be the Son of God. Lookingaround, Jesus sees religious activity that accomplishes little. The temple hadbecome a den of thieves, the religious leaders were out to kill Him, and thoughthe city was filled with pilgrims celebrating Passover, their hearts were heavywith sin and life's burdens.  Lookingahead, Jesus weeps because He sees the terrible judgment coming. In AD 70,about 40 years after His death, the Romans would come, and after a 143-daysiege, they would kill over 600,000 Jews, take thousands captive, and destroythe temple and city. Why? Because the people did not know God had visited them.As Scripture says, “He came to His own, and His own received Him not.” Thepeople are rejoicing, but Jesus is looking within, around, and ahead. I believeHe's looking into our hearts today, too. What does He see in our lives thatwould cause Him to weep if we don't believe, trust, and are not living for Himas we should?  Whata powerful passage. Jesus sees the crowd celebrating, calling Him King, yet Heweeps because He knows the reality of what will happen. He knows in a few daysthis same crowd will be yelling “crucify Him” and have Him nailed to a cross todie. Jesus know that will reject Him and will not trust Him to be their Messiahand Savior. MayGod give us grace today to bring a smile to the face of Jesus as we live toglorify His name in everything that we say and do!

Today,we're looking at Luke chapter 18, specifically verses 35-43, the last verses ofthe chapter. Jesus began this chapter by teaching about prayer, that men oughtalways to pray and not to faint. He gave us several stories about prayer. Inthese last verses Jesus teaches us that the prayer that always turns the ear ofGod to see our need, and give us the miracle that we need, is the “desperate prayer”.Now, as Luke ends this chapter, he points out a certain man who was a beggarand blind, who came to Jesus.  Inthis chapter, we've seen contrasts between different people and situations.Here, we see the contrast between this beggar who was blind and the rich manwho came to Jesus. Matthew's and Mark's gospels tell us there were two beggars,but in the Gospel of Luke, it appears Luke loves to point out how Jesus isinterested in the individual. It didn't matter if there were a hundred sheep;he's interested in one. If there are ten pieces of silver, there's one. Ifthere are two sons, there's one. If there are two beggars, here in Luke's Gospel,there's one. God is interested in you. He knows your need. He wants you to cryout to him. Ifthere's anything we learn about prayer in this chapter, it's that men oughtalways to pray. We're not to pray like the Pharisee, but we come desperately toJesus. The rich young ruler came, thought well of himself, and bragged abouthis goodness. This beggar wouldn't be quiet when he heard Jesus was passing by.He was desperate for his need to be healed and would cry out, even when peopletold him to be quiet. That's another thing you learn from this chapter: thewidow in the first verses of the chapter kept crying out, even though the judgewouldn't listen. The beggar, even though people told him to be quiet, cried outanyway. Ilove the contrast here, and we're encouraged to cry out in desperation. TheScripture says, "You shall seek me and find me when you have searchedfor me with all your heart." That's how you come to Jesus; that's howyou come in faith, believing. This man was blind and acknowledged it. He had nospecial merits to cry out and say, "Oh, I've been good; I've donethis." He had nothing. He came empty and went away rich. The rich man camevery rich and left eternally poor. Myfriend, there's so much we learn from this. I encourage you today: you mightfeel like you have nothing, no merits to come to Christ, or that you've lived alife that merits none of his grace. But you can come in your desperation. If Iknow and have learned one thing from my years of ministry it is that God hearsthe prayers of desperate people. Honestly, I don't know if we really pray untilwe get desperate. The fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much because wemeet Jesus where He is, and we cry out to Him. The"human stories” we have "read" in this chapter should also encourageus to put our faith in Jesus Christ, no matter what others may say or do. Thewidow was not discouraged by the indifferent attitude of the judge, nor thepublican by the hypocritical attitude of the Pharisee. The parents broughttheir little ones to Jesus in spite of the selfish attitude of the Apostles,and the blind men came to Jesus even though the crowd told them to keep quietand stay put. Jesus always responds to faith and rewards those who believe. Whata wonderful story to end this chapter. This poor blind beggar left rejoicing,and the people were praising God. Remember, the rich man left very sad andsorrowful. Don't leave that way, my friend. Come to Jesus, meet Him, have yourlife changed, and let Hm give you your sight.  Jesusasked this blind man, "What do you want Me to do for you?"? Theman said, "Lord, that I may receive my sight." God made himpoint out his need, and Jesus met that need right where he was. I trust thatyou'll trust the Lord today to meet your need. Jesus is always ready to answerthe prayer of a desperate person!

I guess. You saw Stone Cold Steve Austin return and have a whole match! You saw Roman Reigns lay down Brock Lesnar and win the Unified WWE Universal Championship. You saw Pat McAfee, the podcaster and former NFL player just kick ass in a match. An awesome redemption story that included Bianca Belair win back her title was seen.
