Welcome back to Today In Space! It's the end of January, and we couldn't start off the year without a recap of one of my favorite space theories—the Space Conundrum. As space progress accelerates, so does the chaos in society. But why does this happen? Why are they correlated? And more importantly, where is this all heading?” We're going to explain what the space conundrum is, how it led to a world changing event the first time and why these times, as crazy & wild as they are, are actually a cycle we've seen before. So in favor of mental health & focus, let's search for answers in the chaos of space progress and humanity! On this episode, in the wake of Blue Origin's maiden launch of New Glenn and SpaceX's fascinating Starship Flight 7 it's time to take a step back and tell the tale of Two Heavy Lift Rockets. After a decade of space progress from both companies, they each took different engineering approaches to building a rocket. Depending on when you look at their progress, it might feel like one approach is better than the other. But is there a real answer to the “right approach” to building a rocket? Or is success only measured by how well that rocket flies and sends payloads into orbit? The race between the Tortoise (Blue Origin) & the Hare (SpaceX) is in full swing now that New Glenn is orbital. Is there an end to the race? We hope not anytime soon - and that the American Space Program continues to grow thanks to these two innovative companies and the thousands of people that make it happen behind the scenes. This was a hard episode to put together, especially given the timing. While I think it came out better than it would have been originally, we hope it shares a glimpse of the next 5-10 years, the challenges these companies will face, and how painful yet beautiful the quest of reaching the final frontier really is. In postwar America, a shocking secret program was undertaken to bring former Nazi scientists to the United States, in order to maintain a strategic advantage against the Soviet Union. Known as Operation Paperclip, the program involved hundreds of German scientists who ultimately helped give birth to the American Space Program. This week on The Micah Hanks Program, we take a historical deep dive into the controversial program, with an analysis that also looks at the various connections the program, its scientists, and the curious technologies involved may have had to UFO sightings during and after World War II. Is there an even deeper secret history to the U.S.'s post war collaborations with German scientists? Have you had a UFO/UAP sighting? Ever since Charles Darwin wrote his Theory of Evolution, the understanding that God is the creator of all things has been challenged. It is to the point now that if a successful scientist says the he believes in a Creator, they may lose their jobs and be cancelled by the scientific community. In 1974, Werner von Braun, the director of NASA with the unofficial title of The Father of the American Space Program, was asked about God and creation. It was refreshing to hear his response.Support the show (https://www.paypal.me/startingright)
The Voyager Space Probes are in the top ten coooooooooolest things America has ever done. Seriously we built a little robot during the Ford administration and it's still flying around and telling us all kinds of cool stuff about the dust in space or how the sun gets weird after pluto. Lets face it if you like this podcast or are even seeing this you are probably a huge weeb for space exploration and you're a little bit mad that all the cool kids stole the NASA shirt and you wish that Nixon hadn't been arrested for Watergate so we could have gone to Mars. I mean sure Elon Musk says hes going to Mars, but he also said that the way to fix traffic problems is to dig thousands of tiny tunnels under LA so you can pay to use them. The American Space Program was so cool and we did so much cool stuff that wasn't apollo. also this one has Lt. General Jason Torchinsky, Former Advisor to the Obama Administration and Senior China Policy Fellow at the Brookings Institute. When were the Voyager Space Probe Launched? What planets have Voyager probes visited? Where is the Voyager Space Probe? Where is the Voyager Space Probe going? How do the voyager space probes work? How do we talk to the voyager space probes? What did the voyager space probe cost? What is NASAs budget?

At 4:33 this afternoon, if the weather and all systems are go, a SpaceX-built Falcon 9 rocket, carrying two NASA astronauts in a crew capsule called “Dragon," will lift off from Launchpad 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida and soar toward a rendezvous with the International Space Station. The mission, dubbed "Demo 2," will be the first time a privately-built rocket will carry humans into space from US soil, and the first US-built manned spacecraft in a decade. NASA Astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken, both veterans of multiple missions aboard the now-retired Shuttle Orbiters, will dock the CrewDragon with the International Space Station and remain aboard the ISS for at least several weeks. What will this launch mean for NASA’s bid to send humans back to the Moon by 2024 and to Mars in the coming years, and for the future of commercial space exploration? Tom's first guest is reporter Mike Wall. He has covered the space program for Space.com since 2010, and he's is the author of Out There, a 2018 book about the search for alien life. He joins us via Skype from his home in San Francisco. Then, we get some historical perspectives on the SpaceX launch from esteemed space policy analyst, John M. Logsdon. He’s a Professor Emeritus of political science at George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs. In 1987, he founded the Elliott School's Space Policy Institute. Professor Logsdon is also a former member of the NASA Advisory Council and its Exploration Committee. He is the award-winning author of three books about politics and the space program: John F. Kennedy and the Race to the Moon (2010); After Apollo? Richard Nixon and the American Space Program (2015); and Ronald Reagan and the Space Frontier (2019). He has also edited the recently published The Penguin Book of Outer Space Exploration (2018), a collection of original documents tracing the evolution of the U.S. space effort. John Logsdon joins Tom via Skype from his home in Washington, D.C.

On today's episode, we talk about one of my favorite periods of history, the Space Race. The Space Race occupied the scientific communities of the United States and Soviet Union as the two superpowers dueled for supremacy in Space. I had the opportunity to talk to Dr. John Logsdon who is the award winning author of John F. Kennedy and the Race to the Moon (2010) and After Apollo? Richard Nixon and the American Space Program (2015). We talked about the timeline of the race, the various space programs, and the men and women who led the charge to the moon culminating in the Apollo 11 landing on July 20, 1969. A great episode about one of the most interesting periods in American history.
Presidents and the Space Program: How Kennedy, Nixon, and Reagan Set the Trajectory Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Inside Science Interview Series. featuring Dr. John Hogsdon Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #405 As part of our Smithsonian Associates, Inside Science author interview series, our guest today is Dr.John Logsdon. Dr. John Logsdon is often referred to as the “Dean of space policy,” and an educator, author, analyst, and historian of the presidential decisions that have shaped the U.S. space program since its inception. Dr. Logsdon will be presenting at Smithsonian Associates Inside Science author interview series, November 19, 2019. Check out our site for more details. Dr. John Logsdon is the author of John F. Kennedy and the Race to the Moon and After Apollo? And, Richard Nixon and the American Space Program. In 1961, John F. Kennedy decided that being the leader in space was essential to the United States' national interest, and chose to send Americans to land on the Moon as the most visible element of that quest for preeminence. Even as Apollo 11 achieved the goal set by Kennedy, Richard Nixon decided that there was no need to set an ambitious post-Apollo objective. He mandated that the space agency should compete for priority and funding with other government programs, choosing the space shuttle as the centerpiece of NASA's efforts. Ronald Reagan, with his Kennedy-like rhetoric, treated the space program as an example of American exceptionalism and global leadership. He gave NASA the second half of its post-Apollo ambition, developing a space station as “the next logical step.” Though he was the first president to become enthusiastic about potential private-sector space activities, Reagan was a fiscal conservative who followed Nixon's lead in limiting NASA's share of the government budget to far less than what it had been during the Apollo project. Join me and Dr. John M. Logsdon, for a discussion of how presidential leadership impacted America's space program, featuring video clips of remarks by Kennedy, Nixon, and Reagan reflecting their views on that exploration. Dr. Logsdon will be presenting at Smithsonian Associates Inside Science author interview series, November 19, 2019, titled, Presidents and the Space Program: How Kennedy, Nixon, and Reagan Set the Trajectory. When Ronald Reagan was elected in 1980, limits on NASA funding and the lack of direction under the Nixon and Carter administrations had left the U.S. space program at a crossroads. In contrast to his predecessors, Reagan saw outer space as humanity’s final frontier and as an opportunity for global leadership. His optimism and belief in American exceptionalism guided a decade of U.S. activities in space, including bringing the space shuttle into operation, dealing with the 1986 Challenger accident and its aftermath, committing to a permanently crewed space station, encouraging private sector space efforts, and fostering international space partnerships with both U.S. allies and with the Soviet Union.Drawing from a trove of declassified primary source materials and oral history interviews, John M. Logsdon provides the first comprehensive account of Reagan’s civilian and commercial space policies during his eight years in the White House. Even as a fiscal conservative who was hesitant to increase NASA’s budget, Reagan’s enthusiasm for the space program made him perhaps the most pro-space president in American history.John Logsdon is a world-renowned historian and analyst of space issues. He is the author of John F. Kennedy and the Race to the Moon and After Apollo? Richard Nixon and the American Space Program, both award-winning, definitive accounts of presidential space policy, and his most recent book is Ronald Reagan and the Space Frontier. Professor Logsdon is Professor Emeritus at the George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs and founder of its Space Policy Institute. At the President’s rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan last week, an iconic image emerged from the crowd shots. Seated right behind the President was a man wearing a shirt which had a picture of President John F. Kennedy wearing a MAGA hat. Reports from the Midwest after the rally is that the President’s supporters are stoked and passionate about what the President announced just after Mueller’s witch hunt was put on pause. We are going back to space. We are talking about colonizing the Moon and Mars. This is what making America Great actually means and most people who were inspired to great scientific adventure by John F. Kennedy’s challenge to the American population to get to the Moon recognized that a similar great challenge was now inspiring them. They know that the technological and economic spin offs from such a great adventure can power an economy into entirely new dimensions of prosperity.
In this episode, the hosts discuss the masculine design, construction, and use of technology in the American Space Program. Then the hosts have an extended discussion with space historian Dr. Jordan Bimm about the gendering of primates in the Space Program, the Lovelace Women in Space Program (aka Mercury 13), and space medicine.
