SERIES 2 EPISODE 176: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: DON'T BE FOOLED. TRUMP HAS SET THE TABLE SO HE CAN BAIL OUT ON THE DEBATES. "Please let this TRUTH," Trump wrote after the CNN and ABC debates were announced (and "TRUTH" is just an ironic brand name, like everything else Trump calls his crap), "serve to represent that I hereby accept debating Biden on Fox News. The date will be Wednesday, October 2nd. The hosts will be Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum. Thank you.” The Publishers' Clearing House style childish fake legalese ("Represent...hereby...thank you") is the tell. Trump has agreed to the two debates with Biden and simultaneously given himself a way out of going to either of them. Some time between now and the Atlanta debate next month he can simply insist Biden "recommit" to the imaginary third debate, and when Biden refuses, he can back out - claiming Biden backed out first. A late statement from the Biden campaign yesterday showed I'm not the only one thinking this could be in the cards. It's Trump to a tee: What does he have to gain from a debate in which there is no audience, where microphones go off automatically when time expires, and in which Biden does not flail. ALSO: HOW DID MSNBC LET THAT SCOOP GET AWAY? An in-court witness told them, live, Tuesday night, that he saw Trump reviewing the comments of his surrogates who insulted the judge and his family in Trump's place. It was evidence that there was a Trump conspiracy to evade the gag order and it was a huge story. And Alex Wagner changed the subject. Regardless: Justice Merchan must conduct a hearing immediately. It was Trump who CALLED Mike Johnson and the other Republican prostitutes his "surrogates." Presumably there will be more of them today. They are a new and clever means of Trump violating the order by proxy and Merchan should send him to jail for it. B-Block (31:28) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: "How MSNBC's Leftward Tilt Delivers Ratings, and Complications," read the headline in The New York Times. Suddenly I was young again. This was obviously some sort of re-print from 2007. My hair was dark, I could still digest pizza. The sub headline made me happier still: "NBC's leaders have been forced to grapple with how to square its cable news network's embrace of progressive politics with the company's straight-news operation.” Ah yes, thumbing through my scrapbooks from 2006 and 2007 and – that was in the New York Times YESTERDAY? SERIOUSLY? NBC executives are still exploiting The New York Times to whine about the "partisanship" of MSNBC? Holy crap! C-Block (49:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Since we're on this subject, time to re-tell the saga from June 2009 when the "friction" The New York Times reported on yesterday as if it were new (or even just not impossibly old) was so bad that the Chairman of GE - the corporation that then owned us - had decided to take MSNBC off the air because the $200,000,000 a year we made him just wasn't enough to compensate him for having his conservative Mom call up and yell at him.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In part two, we turned to a topic that's closer to home: David Boies. My husband Zach tells me that I'm too soft as an interviewer. Trying to prove him wrong, I asked David some tough questions about sensitive subjects. Do you rue the day you met Elizabeth Holmes? What do you regret about your work for Harvey Weinstein? Why doesn't Boies Schiller Flexner have an anti-nepotism policy? What will be in your Times obituary?I've interviewed David on multiple occasions over the years, and we've never had any tense moments—until now. SLANDERTOWN is a podcast that dives into First Amendment slugfests. No beef too small, no lawsuit too petty. EPISODE 7: Dan & Ari talk to Andrew Rice about the defamation downfall of Rudy Giuliani. Link to Article: https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2023/12/shaye-moss-ruby-freeman-beat-giuliani-in-defamation-trial.html Guest: Andrew Rice (@riceid), Contributing editor, New York Magazine & author of The Year That Broke America.
My guest for this episode is Andrew Rice. Andrew is the Director of Instruction at The Club at Savannah Harbor, located at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort and Spa. In 2019, Andrew was named one of Golf Digest's 50 Top Teachers in America and #1 in Georgia. He has written books, appeared on numerous television productions and runs one of the most successful 3 day golf schools in North AmericaThis episode is absolutely bursting at the seems with information and content. We discuss Andrews path to where he is today, his experience with club players perceptions and understandings, and how impact has perhaps become the forgotten aspect of online swing content and as he wrote a book on it that section gets pretty good. We chat a little about the proposed roll back of the ball and then we move into the coaching section… IN the coaching section Andrew delves into his coaching influences through the years, his explorations into golf swing theory and technique alongside the team at Ping Golf, and the process he uses when exploring such material as the wedge game or wind effect etc….We chat about his work with other coaches on content projects and we discuss Coach Camp, the Golf Coaching event which he runs every year bringing coaches form around the globe together to learn and improve. Lastly Andrew highlights some of the lessons he has learned form running his golf school and distils some advice for those starting or indeed looking to improve their own school.. I have been aware of Andrew for nearly 5 years now in the golf coaching realm but never really got to spend too much time with him personally. I enjoyed his content from afar and when I started to try to produce my own content and my own explorations into the why's and how's of the golf swing, my respect for what he did and how he did it grew. There are the coaches out there who wait for the information to be distributed or discovered and then they learn or study it after it has been filtered through opinions and perspectives. There is nothing wrong with this however and it does produce a level of learning and knowledge. What appears to me about Andrew is he is not happy with that level nor the wait and its not because he wants to be the first or the smartest its because he truly loves the game like we all do and he wants to make sure we are right and he knows to truly truly help golfers our information has to be right…. It is not enough to know the information you must own the information…..As Andrew refers to many times in this Podcast he sees himself as a constant learner, a constant evolver and a recognizer that the more specifics he knows about the golf swing the more he realizes the broad spectrum there is for greatness..Support the show

Some brief thoughts on how to prepare your Group (or Contingent) for Cultural Day at whatever Jamboree you're attending. Podcast Topics Cultural Day has become a staple of Jamborees, and it's important to be prepared for it. As Scout.org notes: "In the middle of Sunday, each unit puts on a demonstration illustrating the culture of their country, region, or locality. The camp is closed to visitors. This is your opportunity to cook, sing, dance, or offer an experience from your country that will make a memory for your guests. I remember watching Scouts getting henna tattoos at the India camp, eating amazing kimchi with the Koreans, sampling hákari with Icelanders (think twice about this!), and vegemite with the Australians. Have your unit throw a party that your guests will remember. Take turns staffing your unit party by wandering around the sub-camp." Ken and Colin discuss Ken's own preparations for the Cultural Day taking place at Kander100, including food ideas, games, music, and various other representations of what Canada is like! Shout-Outs Firstly, a shout-out to the Mannofield Explorer Scouts; we wish you all the best with your musical fundraiser! We'd also like to give a shout-out to Andrew Obee and Liam Burns, the latter of whom we will have to arrange to bring on the podcast at some point! And finally, a big “thank you!” to Joe Vantour, Andrew Waddington, Robert Kelly, Andrew Rice, and Leah Marie for their interest in our new stickers. In his book, "The Year that Broke America," Andrew Rice doesn't just argue that the year 2000 changed things, he argued that it broke everything. From the presidential election, to the seeds of the 9/11 plot, to Elian Gonzalez to reality TV, he explains how a confluence of unfortunate incidents led America down a path from which it has never recovered. It's also easy to forget that Donald Trump waged a presidential run that year, a run that showed him how the country wasn't yet ready for his brand of politics. In sixteen years, it would be. Rice reconstructs how media, politics and violence became places to fight, as opposed to places to come together. Good morning mountaineers! This is Andrew Rice with your Tuesday morning news break. In local news, AppalCart unveiled their first electric bus to their 28 bus fleet on Wednesday. According to The Appalachian, the bus has been funded through the North Carolina Volkswagen Settlement Grant awarded well over a million dollars for the bus and charging station. The grant was made on behalf of the U.S. environmental agency, This is the newest step in the university's initiative to decarbonize the “transportation center” as part of the town of Boone's plan to be carbon free by 2050. The bus will service the red route and drivers will be trained in the beginning of October. In state news, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's office announced that they would no longer be pulling driver's over for minor traffic violations on Monday. According to WRAL, driving with a revoked license, having a tail light out and inspection violations are all examples of minor violations that will not provide grounds for pulling over. The sheriff's office said this will be in an effort to address racial inequality in the county. Activists like those in Action NC are applauding the sheriff's office since deputies often use minor violations to profile Black and Hispanic residents. In national news, Kim Kardashian has agreed to pay $1.26 million to the Securities and Exchange Commission. According toNPR, the star unlawfully advertised the benefits she received from a certain crypto currency company on her Instagram account. The amount charged includes the $250,000 she was paid for the advertisement with interest. According to investigators, Kardashian's post included instructions for potential investors to purchase tokens. Kardashian did not admit or deny the SEC's findings but agreed to not promote any crypto asset securities for three years.
You've probably heard about Hunter Biden's laptop. The laptop and the trove of data on it belonging to U.S. President Joe Biden's youngest son first surfaced publicly just weeks before the 2020 presidential election. At the time, it was largely discredited as foreign meddling and a disinformation campaign intended to sway the presidential race. Since then, several media outlets have verified that at least some of the data on the laptop is real. Meanwhile, the laptop has taken on a life of its own. Depending who you ask, it's either a distraction, or the key to unlocking untold stories of political corruption and shady dealings overseas. New York Magazine journalists Olivia Nuzzi and Andrew Rice spent six-months looking into the laptop: what's on it, the cast of characters responsible for its public release, and the legal investigations that have followed. Today, Andrew Rice joins us to share what they found.
Michael speaks with New York Magazine Contributing Editor Andrew Rice, on his piece "The Sordid Saga of Hunter Biden's Laptop: The most invasive data breach imaginable is a political scandal Democrats can't just wish away." Original air date 15 September 2022.

A close, contested election. Weeks of uncertainty. An election that some felt wasn't legitimate. A Supreme Court divided and politicised. A new president that some felt wasn't the true winner. Not 2020 and beyond, but 2000 in America. Andrew Rice, the author of “The Year That Broke America”, unpicks 12 months that will live in infamy - and when everything came down to Florida. Produced by: Nina Hodgson Sources: CNN, CBS News, ITN Archive
The title of the book "The Year That Broke America" refers to the year 2000, when an immigration crisis captured the headlines, Donald Trump ran for president, and Al Qaeda operatives arrived in the U.S. to learn to fly. Author Andrew Rice, a contributing editor at New York magazine, discusses the events of that year, which started with the fear of a global computer meltdown and ended with a fight over one of the closest presidential elections in U.S. history. Before there was Coronavirus, before there was the contentious 2020 election or the entire Trump presidency, there was a turning-point year that proved momentous and transformative for American politics and the fate of the nation. "The Year That Broke America" (Harper) is the new book by Andrew Rice.
Author Andrew Rice chats on his book THE YEAR THAT BROKE AMERICA, which examines how the year 2000 portended what would follow, and where we'd find ourselves 22 years later. Back at the start of the new millennium, it was easy to laugh and roll our eyes about the crazy events in Florida in the year 2000—but what happened then and there has determined where we are and who we've become. He traces those earlier events to today's political and cultural landscape. Pointing out that Florida was where some of the 9/11 hijackers learned to fly, where Donald Trump first planned to run for president, and where the controversy over Elián Gonzalez's immigration case played out. Andrew Rice is a contributing editor at New York magazine. He is a former staff writer at The Hill and The Observer -- and was a cub political reporter in the year 2000. Tune-in to Leonard Lopate at Large on WBAI 99.5FM when Andrew Rice shares his findings from synthesizing hours of interviews, court records, FOIA requests, and original archival research.

On this month’s episode of Talk Dairy to Me, DFA’s podcast about all things innovation, we’re talking about National Nutrition Month and highlighting the importance of dairy in a healthy diet. From protein powders to sports drinks, innovations in how we process products, and the ingredients used, are expanding consumers’ choices for healthy (and trendy) eating through all the possibilities of dairy. Our host, Doug Dresslaer, talks dairy with Jeff Clark, director of strategy management for our Ingredient Solutions Division, and Andrew Rice, product optimization director for Ingredient Solutions, about how protein powders are no longer that chalky, unappealing powder you might think of and how DFA’s plants process high-quality protein powders. Finally, he chats with Michelle McBride, founder and CEO of GoodSport™, an alum of DFA’s CoLAB Accelerator program who developed a sports drink made from the elements of milk to create a super-hydrating and delicious beverage for athletes and all active individuals.

Montclair Talk speaks with Andrew Rice of New York Magazine about the complex dynamics - old and new - driving the emotional issue of reopening schools in Montclair.
The CDC recently found that schools weren't big contributors to spreading COVID-19, and could re-open for in-person instruction if certain precautions are taken. But Andrew Rice reports on how the school re-opening debate has remained testy in a progressive NJ suburb — and the school buildings remain closed. Plus, Nancy Solomon talks about how Governor Murphy is figuring into local districts' decisions on how to conduct school this year - as well as the role COVID-19 vaccine distribution is playing.

Andrew Rice has always called the Rocky Mountain West region his home. Born in Aspen, CO, he received his BFA in printmaking from the University of Colorado in Boulder and his MFA in Salt Lake City, UT at the University of Utah, where he currently teaches printmaking. Artist Statement: Space is an elemental, yet often overlooked pillar of our existence. There is a duality to space. It has the ability to both liberate us, as well as enclose us. My own work investigates the psychological implications of the spaces that, on the one hand keep us alive, and on the other, prevent access from outside surroundings. Stemming from the 19th century ideas behind the Sublime as an exploration into that which simultaneously excites and terrifies us, I continue to examine this tension between spaces dualities. East v West, Urban v Rural, Left v Right, etc… As technology outpaces humanity’s ability to comprehend it, these investigations become more and more acute. I explore this conceptual and artistic nexus of space. I am interested in the contradiction between its limitations as well as its immensity, and that tension of the in-between. Within these spaces, I am drawn to their ability to be both a point of access as well as inaccessibility. Doorways and windows are our entryways in, but also how we keep things out. In my work, I face the viewer with the option of an entry or an exit. Are you invited in, or left out? The pieces are built up with multiple layers of material, whether it be oil paint stick, screen print ink, or collaged elements. While you may not see the information underneath the outermost layer, the information underneath provides the platform for what will ultimately be visible. There is a history created in the pieces, just as there is a history in the spaces we call our own.
How to estimate amount of oil produced in Syria by Daesh using satellite photos of night time lights? How, using the same technique, can we measure reliability of access to energy? Welcome to another episode of the Words Matter Podcast. This is an impromptu podcast given that the world is in the grip of the COVID19 pandemic, and we are all having to adjust to new ways of living, thinking and being- including how we practice as clinicians.Dr Oliver Thomson speaks with osteopath and David Hohenshurz-Schmidt, an osteopath and PhD student in Pain Research, about how communication skills have now been thrust into the forefront of musculoskeletal and MT practice, given that we are now unable to touch their patients due to the pandemic. In this episode they spoke about the shift in skills necessary for manual therapists and MSK clinicians to conduct appointments remotely either online or via telephone, and thee requires a change in how clinicians (and patients) conceptualise and see value in all different aspects of the clinical practice, such as the nature of ‘treatment', their therapeutic role and their professional identity.David is an osteopath and graduate of the University College of Osteopathy (UCO) in London, and he's also currently in private clinical practice. He completed his MSc in Neuroscience from King's College London, where he focused on pain research using fMRI. He published his MSc research in Frontiers in Neuroscience Journal, not a bad start to a research career! See here for the full paper) He's currently in the midst of a PhD at Imperial College London, where he's part of the pain research group (lead by Prof. Andrew Rice here) investigating methods to improve how we assess effectiveness of non-drug, non-surgical therapies for pain, including manual therapies, CBT, body-mind therapies, acupuncture. Moe about David's research here. David and colleagues at UCO have developed a free webinar (see here) to offer advice and guidance for osteopaths and all MSK clinicians to move their clinical work remotely. It's a great resource and I found it extremely helpful for my own transition online.
