In this podcast, Patricia Papernow discusses her experience as both a stepparent and a parent in a stepfamily, and how this led to first a dissertation on stages of development in becoming a stepfamily, and then a life-long interest in studying and working with stepfamilies. She discusses how stepfamilies are different from first time families, particularly regarding the time and space for the couple to develop their attachment and build some common ground and the challenges children face in stepfamilies. She describes the 5 major challenges for stepfamilies: 1) insider/outsider positions, 2) children's needs, 3) stepparents and biological parents polarizing around parenting tasks, 4) the other biological parents/ex-partner being part of the family system, and 5) navigating creating new shared rituals. She offers concrete, evidence-based guidance about what works (and what doesn't) to meet these challenges. Patricia Papernow, EdD is well known for her books Surviving and Thriving in Stepfamily Relationships, Becoming a Stepfamily, and, with Karen Bonnell, The Stepfamily Handbook From Dating, to Getting Serious to Forming a “Blended Family,” as well as the author of dozens of articles and book chapters about “blended families.” Dr. Papernow is a systems and trauma-trained clinician with a special focus on working with families through the divorce and recoupling process. She is a renowned educator teaching about stepfamilies all over the U.S. and the world. She is also the recipient of the 2017 award for Distinguished Contribution to Family Psychology from APA (American Psychological Association).

Dr. Michelle Schwab is a clinical psychologist based in Portland, Maine. She specializes in health psychology and working with high-achieving professionals who are struggling with burnout. And these days, who isn't feeling at least a little burned out?! Michelle shares some of the red flags for burnout, which includes cynicism and a lack of empathy. From the APA (American Psychological Association) comes this: "Burnout is more than just feeling worn out. According to psychologist Christina Maslach, PhD—a pioneering burnout researcher who developed what has become the gold standard for measuring burnout—the condition has three components: overwhelming exhaustion, cynicism and detachment, and a sense of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment (Maslach Burnout Inventory Manual, fourth edition, 2016). "People kind of switch to doing the bare minimum instead of doing their very best," says Maslach, a professor emeritus of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, and co-editor-in-chief of the journal Burnout Research." https://www.apa.org/monitor/2018/02/ce-corner For health care workers and all caregivers, it's important to remember that burnout is associated with compassion fatigue or secondary trauma, which can contribute to even more burnout. The good news is that there are things that can be helpful to prevent or lessen burnout, including making self-care a priority. Having a trusted social support network, even if that's one other person, can make a big difference. Mindfulness is another practice that's proven to be helpful. In order to deal with what's happening, we need to be aware of how we're feeling, right? In the 2nd half of this episode, Michelle shares a lovely personal story of her work with a cancer patient 30 years ago, and how that helped her cope with 2020's pandemic year. This show is rich with personal insights, and current research data about burnout, stress, and anxiety as we all continue to learn how to navigate the uncharted waters of this era. If you've ever wanted to know more about those personality tests that recruiters often have you go through, this episode is for you. Heather is a Stanford trained personality psychologist and Chief Psychology Officer at https://www.traitify.com/about/ (Traitify), a company working to improve the assessment interview in the recruiting process. Traitify bills itself as the world's fastest talent assessment, using images to determine an array of personality traits as opposed to long form questions you may be used to seeing. With hotels starting to hire again, but so many people having moved on to other jobs (and even other industries), I wanted to get insight on the state of recruiting and how it's changing based on the effects of the pandemic. Personality assessments are nothing new to the hotel industry but as difficulties in hiring and recruiting from a smaller pool dominate the news today, organizations who evolve their thinking around the employee lifecycle will be the ones who come out on top. On this episode we discuss: Assessments for all levels at all stages of the employee lifecycle, from candidate to employee (3:08) Picture based assessments vs. traditional text based questions (5:47) Are pictures more open to interpretation than text based questions? (9:12) The 5 traits being assessed - 5 factor model, OCEAN acronym (11:04) Are the results of the assessment predictive of someone's ability to get promoted? (19:01) Predictive validity studies and interview profiles (21:26) The state of recruiting (23:20) Attracting new entrants to the hospitality industry (25:30) Should assessments be used as a hiring decision? In this episode, co-founders of LGB Fight Back, Carrie Hathorn and Belissa Cohen, speak with Julian Vigo about the longtime corporatisation of lesbian, gay and bisexual lives along with the annexing of sexuality by the transgender lobby which has cannibalised most every gay rights group in the USA over the past two decades. As a result of the trans lobby’s institutional capture, it has been quite successful in convincing many within the gay community to affirm the conversion therapy of its own members to include fast-tracking children into becoming lifetime medical patients, the promotion of gay eugenics and the wider elision of what can only be regarded as gay conversion therapy by professional organisations like the APA (American Psychological Association) which refuse to address the psychological malpractice afoot. Underscoring that “transgender identity” is not “gay adjacent,” Hathorn and Cohen elaborate how our society has been caught up in confirming others’ delusions in the pseudo-political gesture of “kindness” that has paradoxically had a negative effect on the political reality and bodies of gay and bisexual men and women. Click below to listen to the audio podcast: Intellectual Disability and the Death Penalty.  http://dayinwashington.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/Intellectual-Disability-and-the-Death-Penalty-final.mp3 There are 32 states in America that allow the death penalty for certain crimes, but prohibit the punishment from being used on specific populations such as children or persons with intellectual disabilities. That prohibition is a lot newer than people think. It was only in June of 2002 that the US Supreme Court ruled that sentencing people with intellectual disabilities to death is a violation of the Eight Amendment and that such executions are a form of "cruel and unusual punishment" (Atkins v. Virginia). However, as they say, the devil is in the details. What Atkins v. Virginia doesn't say is, how can a prosecutor determine a defendant's mental capacity? Who is and who is not a person with an intellectual disability? The easy answer that I think everyone would respond with would be, IQ tests. That was challenged in Hall v. Florida. Florida had said that anyone with an IQ of 70 or below had an intellectual disability. Freddie Lee Hall, scored a 71. The court reasoned that using a hard-and-fast metric of intellectual disability was arbitrary if other considerations were not considered in cases where the defendant scored close to 70. As a note, the APA (American Psychological Association).where IQ testing originally came from  stated in their amicus brief that even they thought that a valid diagnosis required a more comprehensive assessment. And before you think Florida completely out of line, there are eight other states that have an IQ of 70 listed as their determinant for intellectual disability for the death penalty. Most states tend to follow along three general criteria for consideration: Significant subaverage intellectual functioning (usually defined as an IQ that is two standard deviations below the mean, generally 70 or below with a 5-point standard error measurement); Significant limitations in adaptive functioning (normally this means a finding of significant deficits in two or more skill areas); and Onset in the developmental period (typically considered to be before the age of eighteen). The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals (CCA), thought the above criteria was too.lenient?  They even said: Some might question whether the same definition of mental retardation that is used for providing psychological assistance, social services, and financial aid is appropriate for use in criminal trials to decide whether execution of a particular person would be constitutionally excessive punishment.  So they took it upon themselves to create a definition, referred to as the Briseño factors. On June 6, 2016, the Supreme Court agreed to hear Moore v. Texas, a case that specifically looks at the these factors. So, in addition to the criteria above, seven additional factors for assessing someone's intellectual capacity were included: Did those who knew the person best during the developmental stage€”his family, friends, teachers, employers, authorities€”think he was mentally retarded at that time, and, if so, act in accordance with that determination? Has the person formulated plans and carried them through or is his conduct impulsive? Does his conduct show leadership or does it show that he is led around by others? Is his conduct in response to external stimuli rational and appropriate, regardless of whether it is socially acceptable? Does he respond coherently, rationally, and on point to oral or written questions or do his responses wander from subject to subject? Can the person hide facts or lie effectively in his own or others' interests? Putting aside any heinousness or gruesomeness surrounding the capital offense, did the commission of that offense require forethought, planning, and complex execution of purpose? Not very scientific.
