How does secondary traumatic stress (STS) affect eating disorder providers, and how can we care for ourselves without bypassing the realities of burnout, exhaustion, and systemic overwhelm? Dr. Marianne sits down with Dr. Danielle Hiestand, LMFT (@drdaniellehiestand), to unpack the intersection of STS, vicarious trauma, burnout, and disordered eating in helping professionals. Whether you're a therapist, dietitian, coach, or caregiver working in high-empathy roles, this episode explores how chronic exposure to others' pain can show up somatically, emotionally, and in our relationships with food and body. Dr. Hiestand shares research insights and lived-experience wisdom on setting sustainable boundaries, navigating ethical self-care, and creating healing spaces that also protect the healer.

In this podcast, Philippe Rey-Westlund and Byron Rey-Westlund talk about their culinary adventures in Mexico and what has and continues to inspire these explorations of Mexico's culinary history. Both Byron and Philippe talk about their initial experiences with Mexican cuisineByron grew up in the Cupertino, California (Silicon Valley) surrounded by fruit orchards. Cupertino, before becoming the Apple Corp. headquarters, was a small village one hour south of San Francisco populated mostly by Italian and Mexican immigrants. There he was introduced early to the delicious tasty layers of ancestral Mexican cuisine.  Philippe discovered Mexican cuisine early on when he immigrated to the US and with Byron, they began to travel to Mexico to experience authentic Mexican cuisine in some “off the beaten paths”.  They recount one particular adventure that was harrowing but totally worth the long culinary road rarely taken. In this podcast, we speak about California's Mexican heritage and how, even today, it is still possible to find authentic Mexican cuisine. Byron and Philippe also share their advice with our listeners on how to plan a culinary trip to Mexico and how there are still so many culinary destinations in Mexico to discover. Dr. Philippe Rey is the Executive Director of ACS in the Silicon Valley, California.  He first joined Adolescent Counseling Services in 1998 as Caravan House Program Director. After three years at Caravan, he became a member of the executive team as Associate Director and has now been the agency's Executive Director since 2004.  Philippe was born and raised in the French-speaking region of Switzerland and came to the United States in 1984 to attend the University of California at San Diego. In 1997, his doctorate in clinical psychology with a concentration in child and family therapy was conferred by Alliant International University in San Diego. Before pursuing graduate studies and a career in psychology, Philippe graduated from business school in Sion, Switzerland.  Byron Westlund worked in technology and with the responsibilities of holding leadership positions, he was afforded the opportunity to travel the world for business. As an adventurous and curious person, Byron would explore the food scene everywhere he landed. With offices and staff he would visit, on an almost monthly basis, Grenoble, Lyon, Geneva, Mexico City, Tokyo and Singapore.  Byron would go out of his way to sample all local tastes and traditional dishes.  Upon his return home to Silicon Valley, he would spend hours recreating the flavors and structures of the dishes he so loved while out in the world. Underground Dining at Naglee Park was inevitable and for ten years, became Byron's retirement-from-technology job, but way more fun and creative. Byron always loves nothing more than welcoming friends and family to his table to share with them his passion and love for good, heart-warming, soul-lifting food and good times. With his husband Philippe, Byron operated an "Underground Dining" establishment for over 10 years, which served as a cultivation & fundraising vehicle for ACS.

Whether you're curious or already a fan of these approaches, this episode is packed with mind-blowing insights, practical takeaways, and a dash of nerdy neuroscience fun. HEAR FROM DANIELLE ABOUT DANIELLE! I have been passionate about learning and helping others most of my life. I am originally from Northern California and was overjoyed to study at University of California, San Diego and to live near the ocean. After receiving my Bachelors of Science in Cognitive Science, Neuroscience and Psychology I stayed in San Diego to complete my doctorate in Marital and Family Therapy at Alliant International University and become a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT #48529). While at college, I took a course on eating disorders and began to volunteer with a program that focused on eating disorder prevention. I knew I wanted to be a therapist and help people heal and recover from their eating disorders. I planted my roots in San Diego and began working at an eating disorder treatment program. It was clear early on that most of my clients had a trauma history. Some had never called what they went through “trauma,” but could see how their life experiences had contributed to the development of their eating disorder. Others knew they had gone through something that still bothered them in the present, but didn't know how to talk about it or how to heal.  During this time I acquired extensive experience treating anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, complex PTSD, dissociative disorders, depression, and anxiety. I also began my training in EMDR therapy; a treatment that has become crucial to my therapeutic approach. To help clients on their journey toward healing I also utilize systems theory, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), acceptance commitment therapy (ACT), and mindfulness. My overall goal is to work collaboratively with clients in order to honor their treatment goals. In 2013 Kelly Hinds, RDN and I created Savor Podcast. For three years we recorded episodes on nutrition, body image, mindfulness, yoga, eating disorders, dieting, EMDR therapy and beyond. Past Savor podcast episodes are available here. Before starting my family, I was an adjunct professor at University of California, San Diego, Alliant International University and San Diego State University. I taught classes on eating disorders, stress management, social psychology, and assessment. After my family started to grow, I decided to slow down and work part-time in my Mission Valley private practice in San Diego, California.  I work toward providing a calm, safe and grounded space for you to feel comfortable sharing your successes and your struggles. A journey back to self always has ups, downs and surprises. Together we can navigate how to find tools and strategies to help you cope and make space for yourself. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my husband and two daughters. I also love swimming, paddle boarding, and hiking. We talk about the link between education and creativity. I ask her if we are doing enough to foster creativity & creating thinking in the school system? And she gives us some actionable things we can do at home for ourselves and our children to rev our own creative engines. One of my favourite moments though, comes towards the end  when I ask her about the possibility of the opposite of inheriting generational trauma existing. We know we can inherit trauma but can we inherit magical wonderful things too? We shared a really tender moment - one where I felt like she was talking to ALL of us. It's beautiful, uplifting and inspiring.  I think you'll be really moved by it. What Dr. Cheryl Arutt & I talk about-What creativity IS from a brain science perspective. -What is really going on inside our psychology when people say “I'm not creative”-Why processing trauma including intergenerational trauma, and converting it to post traumatic growth is so important (and is absolutely possible)-The link between education and creativity. Are we fostering creativity and creating thinking enough in the school system? And if we are seeing that our children are not getting as much focus on creativity in school what can we do at home? -What is the one question you can ask yourself (or your kids) to kick start your creativity (what is another way to do that/look at that/solve that)-How the “we only use 10% of our brains” thing is a myth-How to use creativity to safely access our traumas -What is EMDR (eye movement and desensitization and reprocessing therapy how it was discovered and how creative people can use it to heal trauma and access even more of their innate creativity-Post traumatic growth - learning to integrate and recognize all the ways you grew as a person as a result of living through your trauma-What she thinks creativity is trying to do - from a brain science perspectiveAbout Dr. Cheryl AruttDr. Cheryl Arutt is an accomplished clinical and forensic psychologist based in Beverly Hills, CA whose amalgamation of rigorous training and experience allows her to engage with people from a place of deep insight and empathy. With a PhD in Organizational Psychology from Alliant International University, Damian's career began with Personnel Decisions International (PDI), where he gained global experience training leaders in coaching skills and conducting executive assessments. Despite initial resistance and misconceptions about supervision, Damian underscores its value for professional growth and the enhancement of coaching practices. He has also authored nine books, with his latest focusing on leadership in contemporary times and addressing the importance of foresight, technology, and resilience. Looking ahead, Damian is excited about the integration of technology and artificial intelligence into coaching. He sees these advancements as opportunities to enhance coaching accessibility and effectiveness, providing tools that can offer immediate feedback and support. Damian envisions a future where technology and human insight coexist, allowing for a more comprehensive approach to coaching. He encourages coaches to embrace new tools and methodologies to stay relevant and effective, blending traditional practices with innovative solutions to meet the evolving needs of the profession.

Let's continue our conversation about treatment today with a discussion on Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) for anxiety and issues with mood. CBT has shown to be an effective treatment for individuals with anxiety and depression, and research shows substantial support for CBT as an effective first line treatment for children. More research shows that up to 60% of children and teens treated with CBT experience significant decreases in symptoms that are lasting for 4 years or more. But what is Cognitive Behavior Therapy? Today's guest, Dr. Shadab Jannati, has seen firsthand the impact CBT has on children and teens with anxiety and depression. In this episode, she explains what CBT is, what a session might look like, and what this form of psychotherapy does to help children, teens, and their families.   Show Notes: [3:05] - CBT is a form of psychotherapy established in the 1960s that has evolved over the years. [3:57] - This form of therapy is goal-oriented and focused on the here and now. [5:27] - Children and teens without a formal diagnosis still benefit from CBT. [6:44] - Dr. Jannati gives examples of scenarios where children and adolescents experience anxiety. [8:18] - CBT also gives kids and teens the ability to listen to body cues and their feelings. [9:49] - When these feelings come up, kids and teens can then recognize that they are anxious and change their thinking. [11:24] - Anxiety can show up in many ways, but common problems are negative thinking and “mind-reading,” which are irrational. [12:59] - The first step is being aware of the feelings and negative thinking. The next step is to find the right coping strategies. [14:15] - Like waves, feelings come and go. [15:42] - For younger children, play-based strategies are also used in CBT. [17:13] - CBT is appropriate for most ages; Dr. Jannati works with children ages 4 to 16. [20:04] - There is a sense of relief and hopefulness with CBT. Anxious feelings are validated, and children and teens can learn what to do. [22:05] - It is ideal when parents can be involved in the sessions as well. [23:53] - 80% of kids with problematic anxiety don't receive treatment.  [24:43] - CBT doesn't last for years. The number of sessions varies per person but 12-24 sessions is average at about 6 months to a year.   About Our Guest: Dr. Shadab Jannati is a licensed clinical psychologist with a private practice in West Los Angeles. She received her B.A. in Psychology from University of California, Irvine in 2001 and completed her doctoral studies at Alliant International University in 2006. She has over 20 years of experience working with children with a variety of social, emotional, and behavioral challenges. Dr. Jannati provides an empathic, strength-based approach and utilizes Cognitive Behavioral strategies, play therapy, and mindfulness practice to assist children in managing and coping with their emotional struggles.  Additionally, she provides parent consultation, as parents are an integral part of the child's treatment and progress. When asked why he selected Alliant International University, Dr. Kaplan responded “I wanted what was being called, at the time, a scholar practitioner model” so that he could “do things in the real world that bridge academia and practice.” He emphasized this by stating “I wanted the knowledge, but I also wanted to make change.” Dr. Kaplan has been creating change for himself and others ever since attending graduate school. As a graduate student, he worked as a consultant for one of the first innovation consulting firms, IdeaScope Associates. One of the many pieces of advice he has for anyone looking for a graduate degree in psychology, especially those in organizational psychology, is to get real-life experience. He states, “I realized very quickly, business wants experience, not just letters after your name.” Therefore, he worked very hard to beef up his resume with real experiences which included internships, working part-time or full-time at organizations or businesses in the industry, and even doing volunteer work. He states, “I loaded up my resume with real experiences that were very short and quick and kind of easy to get for somebody like me.” For example, he shares “I volunteered for a community mediation organization nonprofit where I got trained as a mediator.” Change happens through innovation and breakthroughs, so it is no surprise that Dr. Kaplan is the founder, or co-founder, of three Silicon Valley startups. He was the co-founder of iCohere with is father (Pascal) which was one of the first online learning and collaboration platforms. He is the founder of InnovationPoint, a strategic innovation consulting firm and, more recently, the founder of Praxie which is an online marketplace of business best practices from industry experts, book authors, and consultants. When discussing Praxie, he states “it's all about trying to take what I've gained from my life experience and make it accessible for other people so they can then do what's important to them. That's been the most rewarding for me.” His life experiences have contributed to his success. Dr. Kaplan is a best-selling and award-winning author, an international keynote speaker, an affiliate at the Center for Effective Organizations (CEO) at USC's Marshall School of Business, and a columnist for Inc. Magazine and Psychology Today. His first book, “Leapfrogging: Harness the Power of Surprise for Business Breakthroughs” was named the Best Leadership Book. His second book, “The Invisible Advantage: How to Create a Culture of Innovation” received the Best General Business Book distinction by the International Book Awards. We discuss his third book, “Experiential Intelligence: Harness the Power of Experience for Personal and Business Breakthroughs” which came out January 24, 2023. Although Dr. Kaplan didn't coin the term “experiential intelligence,” he states “I have expanded upon it and kind of tried to give it life through this book in a way that the world hasn't yet embraced.” Dr. Kaplan shares that Dr. Robert Sternberg, Past President of the American Psychological Association, coined the term “experiential intelligence” which may also be referred to as “creative intelligence.” To put things into perspective regarding intelligence, first,

This week, I'm talking with Dr. Ryan Witherspoon, who if you've read my book Open, you'll recognize as the psychologist most quoted throughout. In our interviews, I found Ryan to be a treasure trove of knowledge about so much relevant to my book—non-monogamy, communication, gaslighting—and kink.  For this conversation, I wanted to really delve into kink. We spend some time talking about definitions and common misconceptions but then dive pretty quickly into the specific subtleties of the psychology of kink and BDSM. What do submissives and dominants each get out of the dynamic? How do you talk constructively about it when a scene doesn't work? What are some red flags in play partners to look out for? What if you're using kink to work through trauma? All this and so much more is discussed in this episode.  Even if you consider yourself vanilla--or a kink expert--I think you will learn some things about sexual psychology and communication in relationships from this episode.  *** Dr. Ryan Witherspoon received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) at Alliant International University. In addition, he has Masters degrees in clinical and general psychology from CSPP and Pepperdine University, respectively. After finishing his doctorate he completed two years of advanced training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at Rose City Center.  In addition to his private practice, he is also an active researcher, author, and speaker. He regularly publishes peer-reviewed research.

But we want to innovate in a way that is still based on the foundation of our business. My guests today are Adria and Aaron Bagshaw of W. H. Bagshaw, a family business since 1870. There is a lot of great insight in this conversation into why it's important to clarify your core values, how to use them to navigate with purpose, and how to keep a business in the family in a way that encourages creativity and innovation. We also talk about the vertices they have built out in their business and the mindset they hold around opportunity and risk.   What You'll Learn:   How Bagshaw navigates serving many different industries Weaving your core values into your business as a daily navigator Why it's important to have a Founder mindset even generations later How to honor your companies legacy while continuing to move forward Creating a culture where individual passions are supported The benefit of challenging set parameters The responsibility of leadership to support their employees health Owning the mindset that nothing is a failure How to positively include younger children in the business Why you need to get out of of your business to work on your business Resources: https://www.whbagshaw.com/ Aaron Bagshaw proudly serves as the 5th generation to run the W.H. Bagshaw Company, which he co-owns with his wife, Adria. While he serves as the President, his business card reads “Chief Visionary Officer”.  He oversees Sales, Marketing and Technology.  He's passionate about manufacturing and innovation, which is evident visiting their 150+ year old business that feels more like a start-up.  As Vice President, Adria's main areas of focus are Workforce and Finance, but her title is “Chief Validation Officer.”  While the couple maintains their own realms of responsibility, they work together on Quality and Strategic Planning.  They're proud to provide meaningful jobs to 40+ employees and preserve the family business legacy for a 6th generation.  Aaron received a degree in Sports Management from Springfield College and his MBA in Strategic Management from USIU (now Alliant International University). Dr. Jennifer Konzen joins us in this fascinating episode as we explore the sacred space between life's stimuli and our reactions. Jennifer teaches us how to honor our initial feelings and thoughts while ultimately responding based on our values and who we want to be before God. About the Speaker: Dr. Konzen is the director for the Center for Sexuality in San Diego, CA. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist, a certified sex therapist, and a certified chemical dependency counselor. Jennifer lives with her family in beautiful San Diego, California where she has been involved with shepherding and leading in the married and youth and family ministries.Episode Notes:“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom” - Viktor Frankl"People want to be able to genuinely express what they think or feel from a place that does not feel out of control."Scriptures: 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 NIV - When we have distressed emotions we can remember that we have a compassionate God. Isaiah 63:9- "In all their distress, he too was distressed" - God sits beside us in our distress, He doesn't wag His finger in our distress. 2 Corinthians 10:5- "Take every thought captive"- this scripture is used out of context very often; this isn't about your emotions and thoughts. We can respond based on our values instead of our initial, emotional reactionsStewarding the Sacred Space: Before we can respond based on our values, we have to soothe psychologically if we are highly triggered. Adrenaline floods the body when we are activated in .05 seconds; it takes about 20 minutes for adrenaline to calm back down.Let the feelings talk:God is kind enough to give us the space to sit with our emotions and let them talk for a minute before we try to either squash them or give them full vent. Give yourself time to honor your feelings and reactions but ultimately responding to life's stimuli based on your values and who you want to be."I can feel myself getting reactive to this, I want to be able to share this with you in the best way possible- can I come back and try again later?"Blame Game: Isaiah 58:9-10: “do away...with the pointing finger..."Ephesians 4:15 - Speak the truth in love.Psalm 16:8Jen's Recommended Resources:Book: Emotionally Healthy Spirituality  Book: The Ruthless Elimination of HurryACT: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Resources – Hayes, HarrisRuss Harris Videos on YouTubePodcast: theartofintimatemarriage.comRetreats: Alaska RetreatsSabbath RestSupport the show (https://tithe.ly/give_new/www/#/tithely/give-one-time/678206?giving_to=Woven%20In%20Truth%20Podcast)

With Dr. Ian BrooksI'm Ian D. Brooks, and I care about people and cherish the relationships built. My career spans 24 years – covering clinical psychology and personal development – with the mission of helping people move incrementally toward sustained achievements. My early experience in clinical psychology taught me a valuable understanding of how our history and choices influence the direction taken. The power of this experience transitioned to working with organizational leaders and individuals – who are already successful – but want to expand beyond their current boxes.I invest in – time, money, and energy – and am willing to take risks toward improving my life. I challenge myself to extend beyond my comfort zone to see what's next. This is not in comparison to others but in comparison to my personal bar.I earned my PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Marshall Goldsmith School of Management at Alliant International University and a Master's in Clinical Psychology from Auburn University at Montgomery.I received my Bachelor of Science degree from Morehouse College. I also pursued a National Academy of Sports Medicine certification and a bar-tending license, furthering my development to understand individuals and build connections. In my free time, I enjoy working out, wine tasting, motorcycles, conducting “mixologies”, attending sporting events, and continuously pushing my personal boundaries. In the end – what's the worst that can happen?Ian's Coaching Style:My coaching style integrates laughter and dialog. I'm here to reestablish the behavioral foundation of leadership and personal transformations. I have a reputation of asking tough questions that penetrate, where the answers expose the deepest kind of individual conditioning. My strength is to recognize the potential and talent of other people and offer guidance. I have an inherent ability to understand the challenges you are facing or the growth you are seeking. By reducing the anxiety associated with transforming, I focus on the behaviors and management of emotions that can be transferred to other situations.I am here to break you of old patterns and acknowledge the templates that have offered safety. Intended to be vulnerable, this awareness offers the groundwork to act and experience the journey of transformation.Resources:Contact IanE-mailian.brooks@rhodessmith.comWebsitehttp://rhodessmith.comSocial Media profiles:https://twitter.com/DrB_Intention ; https://www.instagram.com/drb_intention/ ; https://www.facebook.com/ian.brooks.501 ; https://www.linkedin.com/in/ian-brooks-phd-ms/Contact LaQuita Monley:If you would like to be a guest on "LaQuita's Toolbox, please schedule a 15-minute discovery call with me.https://calendly.com/laquitamonley/podcast-pre-booking-callEmail: podcast@laquitamonley.com
