Episode #184 of Not Well - "The Fat Man's Little Coat of Emotions: Coping with Mental Health, Relationships, Bad Bosses, and Church Struggles"Bobby starts off the episode by talking about a friend's untimely death and the importance of mental health. He touches on the recently established suicide hotline 988 and the need for people to reach out when they are struggling. Bobby emphasizes the importance of taking care of one's mental health, and how it can be difficult to do so amidst life's challenges. Of course this is done in the only way Bobby and Jim know, with a flair of humor but also being serious. Next, Bobby and his Jim delve into the recent news of a church in Jacksonville requiring its members to sign documents stating they are not homosexual and they denounce anything related to the LGBT community. They discuss the negative impact this can have on individuals and the importance of accepting people for who they are.The conversation then shifts to the recent FDA approval for gay men to give blood, and the differences between gay and straight people. Bobby and his Jim examine the nuances of this issue and the importance of understanding and accepting people for their individual differences.Later in the episode, Bobby's cousin Heather comes into town and the topic of bosses is brought up. They talk about the variety of boss personalities and the impact they can have on the workplace. Bobby and his co-host share their own experiences with good and bad bosses and how they have navigated these relationships. The episode ends with a wrap-up of the different topics covered, tying them together with the overarching theme of mental health and acceptance. Throughout the episode, the keywords "Not Well," "Gay Podcast," and "LGBT" are emphasized, giving listeners a comprehensive and inclusive view of the various issues affecting the gay community. As we've been playing Wildwood Flower for the past two weeks, I thought it would be fun to have a run through at 75 bpm, then, when we're warmed up, go through it again slightly quicker at 85 bpm. It's a bit of an experiment. We're using the jam along format - that means I'm kicking off playing backup and you're on the tune, then we swap and go round 4 times. Then, after a quick pause, we do the whole thing again at 85 bpm.Have a go and see what you think. If you like it, let me know and I'll do more of these for other tunes too. In this episode, we wrap up the story of the Haitian Revolution. Toussaint Louverture consolidated power in the colony and drafted a new Constitution, in response to which Napoleon sent a massive French to bring Saint-Domingue back under French control. Much like the British before them, the French troops were decimated by yellow fever and so were not strong enough to put down the revolt that broke out when it was discovered that Napoleon planned to reimpose slavery in the colony. We also discuss yellow fever virus, including the disease it causes, how it came to the Americas, and the mosquito that vectors it.Engraving of Toussaint Louverture by J.  In this episode we discuss the stress factors in the French sugar colony of Saint-Domingue that led to the Haitian revolution, including slavery and the racial apartheid system; how the Haitian revolution was intertwined with and influenced by the French Revolution; the decimation of British troops by yellow fever and the failed British invasion of Saint-Domingue; and the rise of Toussaint Louverture, whose actions would provoke Napoleon into invading Saint-Domingue.The island of Hispaniola is dominated by tall, east-west running mountains.Map of the provinces of French Saint-Dominuge, showing the relative locations of the North, West, and South."Napoleon Bonaparte in the coup d'état of 18 Brumaire in Saint-Cloud" by François Bouchot"Mortals are equal, it is not birth, but virtue alone that makes the difference". There was an abolotionist movement among the French aristocracy prior to the French and Haitian Revolutions, as illustrated by this illustration."Burning of the Plaine du Cap - Massacre of whites by the blacks". Most of the contemporary illustrations of the Haitian Revolution were produced by  Europeans and show Black slaves murdering White planters. While such atrocaties happened, such skewed presentations that did not include the brutality the former slaves faced, helped skew public opinion outside of Saint Domingue against the slaves. Illustration of jungle fighting between French troops and Black former slaves.
