We talk with SCCA Hall of Fame race car driver Randy Pobst. From his racing origins in a Mk1 VW Rabbit, to his 2 wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona, and his personal car collection – including his Smokey and the Bandit Trans Am and Flyin' Moose Volvo 740. To start, we'll dive into Randy's racing experience: factory contracts with Porsche, Mazda, Volvo, and Toyota. Winning the 24 Hours of Daytona not once, but twice, and his 2015 induction into the SCCA Hall of Fame. We'll cover his exploits at Thunderhill, VIR, Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca, Daytona, Pikes Peak, Sonoma, Lime Rock, Willow Springs, and more! From humble origins in a Mk1 VW Golf (no, not a GTI), to a factory-backed FX16 Toyota Corolla, to setting a Laguna Seca lap record in a McLaren Senna. Randy even worked on the set of 2 Fast 2 Furious as a driving instructor for the film's stars: Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson, and Devon Aoki – to name a few. Randy eventually met Jason while filming an uncooperative Cayman GT4 for Motor Trend, and, despite a rocky start when Jason unexpectedly flung a Range Rover off track while racing Randy in an Alfa Romeo 4C, the two teamed up again to film multiple Ultimate Drag Race, Lap Battle and ICONS episodes for Hagerty. The whole gang laments some of the most irritating modern car tech: excessively bright headlights, lights that are somehow off at night, ABS systems that fully shut down when traveling backwards, AEB overreach, and EPAS systems that completely ruin a car's limit handling by curtailing the driver's ability to quickly catch a slide (like the Shelby GT350 Randy repeatedly spun and Jason crinkled at Willow Springs – not to mention the Unplugged Performance Tesla Model 3 Randy famously wrecked at Pikes Peak). Speaking of handling, Randy divulges his dislike of twitchy cars like the Jaguar F-Type R and XJ, the KTM X-Bow, and Ariel Atom. Jason on the other hand loves an ass-y car like the V12 Vantage S, but says the Lotus Exige V6 Cup was so tail-happy it was uncontrollable. The Porsche Carrera GT is somewhere in the middle with mixed reviews and experience all around. While on the topic of handling dynamics, Randy tells us his secret plan to invent a fix for the C8 Corvette's trailing throttle oversteer. He also gives praise to Porsche's Lars Kern for his work on the latest crop of RS products – which may or may not be Randy's favorite track cars of all time out of the box, alongside the 2014 Porsche 911 50th Anniversary Edition. All of which receive top marks on Randy's understeer spectrum, and are polar opposites of the likes of a 1960s Cadillac. We'll touch on Randy's personal car collection as well, which includes a Volvo 740 sedan and wagon, his 1977 Pontiac Trans Am “Randit” (and its oil starvation woes), Toyota Tundra tow vehicle, VW Karmann Ghia and early Tesla Model S. Plus, Derek invents a new phrase for “road rage”, Randy bitch slaps cars out of his way, and also beautifully sings Primus' Wynona's Big Brown Beaver. Learn more about your ad choices. In the early 1990s, a car designer and university lecturer, Simon Saunders, purchased an automotive vehicle manufacturer historically famous for making everything from push bikes to motorcars since 1871.The company was Ariel, and following a pause in manufacturing since 1971, under Saunders' new ownership, the brand was to reappear in 1996 along with one of the most revolutionary and celebrated sports cars in recent history, the Ariel Atom.In this week's episode of The Driven Podcast, we travel to the modern-day home of Ariel in Somerset to meet with Simon Saunders and his son Henry Siebert-Saunders to learn about the company - from the reveal of the first new-era car - right up to the modern day._______________________________________________The Driven Podcast brings you motoring-focused discussions, observations from the automotive world, and interviews in which we explore our guests' careers, exploits, and anything else worth discussing. We will also keep you up to speed with the latest automotive news stories and insights into the cars and motorcycles we're reviewing at Driven.
Mike Spagnola is the president of SEMA. Naturally we'll be talking about the EPA, the rise of EVs, and what the future of modded cars looks like. He's also built some seriously fast toys of his own, raced in open wheel, the Mint 400, and tracks an Ariel Atom. He's one of us. This conversation was fascinating. We talk about modified car trends; over-fenders; the overlanding explosion; what the EPA is trying to do to the car hobby; how SEMA's two Garages help small businesses build and test new parts (and get them approved by CARB); how SEMA is evolving; arrival of the EV swap; and why this year's SEMA is bigger than ever.Recorded May 25, 2023https://www.semashow.com/https://www.semagarage.com/ Go to blackvue.com/TST to learn more about the BlackVue DR970X series dash cams. Here's a throwback to 2005, when Tom Ford thought it would be a good idea to take a track car to the beautiful, inhospitable wilderness of the Arctic Circle. Now he's defrosted (nearly 20 years later) we thought it'd be time to get him in the pod studio for a chat about it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The long-running electronic duo Matmos have just released a gorgeous new LP, Regards / Ukłony dla Bogusław Schaeffer. Whereas their previous album, 2020's The Consuming Flame: Open Exercises in Group Form, saw the couple collaging contributions from 99 friends recorded at 99 bpm, their latest is dedicated to the work of just one person: Polish polymath Bogusław Schaeffer (1929-2019). In this episode, we discuss how their reputation for conceptualism has often served to obscure the formal characteristics of their work. Can an object be a concept? Is “washing machine” or “plastic” a concept? With their signature blend of serious humor, the pair reflect on touring with a washing machine, the practicalities of licensing music, and the complexities of working with Schaeffer's archive. Precio 8.800 € 9. Mazda MX-5 ST 2.0 (2018-2020) 1.105 kg, 184 CV, 6,00 kg por CV, 0-100 km/h en 6,5 s. Precio 29.000 € 8. Caterham Seven 165 (1973-2021) 470 kg, 80 CV, 5,87 kg por CV, 0-100 km/h en 6,5 s. Precio 30.000 7. Abarth 695 Biposto (2014-2016) 997 kg, 189 CV, 5,25 kg por CV, 0-100 km/h en 5,9 s. Precio 40.900 € 6. Lotus Elise R (2015-2108) 866 kg, 192 CV, 4,67 kg por CV, 0-100 km/h en 5,4 s. Precio 50.000 € 5. Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Sport (1972-1973) 975 Kg, 210 CV, 4,64 kg por CV. Welcome all to episode 27 of the show. In this session, I welcome Arin Baharian whom kindly took the time to call in from Southern Cali. During the day, his profession grants him full access to the deepest parts of the automotive business. During his off time, he straps up in a highly worked Ariel Atom to cast his rule over the San Gabriel Mountain range by way of the Angeles Crest Highway (California State Highway 2). We really touch on the spiritual aspect of what it is, what it means, and how to drive this road. People who frequent the run on HWY 2 have a deep connection and respect with the tarmac, which is why it's no surprise the area is filled with passing enthusiasts. Arin and I chat about the rest of his fleet, all providing a totally different experience than the other. My favorite of his is a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van fully loaded for on-road living, equipped with a mobile office that gives Arin the oppurtunity to drive to the beach, or the mountains and login to work. This guy knows how to California. Tune in. Also, a special shoutout to my boy David (@bmtrdyoo, featured on #016) for connecting Arin and I! They're driving buddies out West, cheers to that!Intro & exit track provided by the talented @ArifOmariandFranklin production squad. Thanks gents
We are in the worst recession in living memory for the UK with GDP plummeting by 22.1 per cent in the first six months of 2020. But strange as it may sound, does that matter? We knew things would be terrible as the coronavirus lockdown pressed the pause button on the economy and people’s lives. Shops were shut, businesses were shuttered, everyone who could worked from home, almost 10million people were furloughed, international travel was halted, property sales were frozen and children didn’t go to school for four months. If you’d have predicted that was what 2020 would bring last New Year’s Eve, nobody would have believed you and they might even have called for help. So, it should come as no surprise that the ONS released figures this week showing that this year’s astonishing actions crashed the economy – although the fact that the UK suffered more than any other major economy other than Spain is a cause for concern. The question is, what next? On this week’s podcast, Simon Lambert and Georgie Frost dig into the GDP figures to find out why the UK was hit so hard, whether we can read anything into the ONS’s figures and what to watch out for to identify if the economy is recovering better or worse than expected. Also on this week’s show, they discuss how amid all that carnage some households are getting their finances on track, how to buy a property in pandemic if you are an aspiring first-time buyer and how to keep your pension on track. And finally, the Government in its wisdom has decided to push on with getting Brexit fully done - even if it means no trade deal by the end of the year – and that will mean imported cars get more expensive. But fear not, new car buyers, because we’ve got the best British-built options instead – from a Nissan Juke shopping cart, to a gorgeous McLaren and the wonderfully bonkers Ariel Atom.

Gears and Beers: The Unashamedly Unprofessional Automotive Podcast
Thanks to Mr. Michael Trew who returns again this week, we actually have some beer to talk about as he kindly supplied some beers. One of which was bad, the other was decent. The first topic this week is Trewsy talking about his MX5, which once again, is broken. Matt then gives a brief update on the Project Prado, which is coming along nicely. Mitch then talks about the Ariel Atom 4 to be certified for sale in Australia from 2019, and then we agree that driving a car and driving a car are completely different things. Mitch then talks about Suzuki Australia confirming the confirmation of the new Suzuki Jimny coming to Australia, also from 2019. We then talk about old cars that smell of fuel, and old Toyota Camry's. Matt the asks a question. What JDM classic would you pick; FD RX7, R32 GTR, Mk4 Supra, or a (stock) S13 Silvia. Joseph then talks about Kia's recall of yellow Stinger's, whose paint is prone to cracking. We then take a question from Grant, one of our listeners, about tyres.
