We talk with SCCA Hall of Fame race car driver Randy Pobst. From his racing origins in a Mk1 VW Rabbit, to his 2 wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona, and his personal car collection – including his Smokey and the Bandit Trans Am and Flyin' Moose Volvo 740.  To start, we'll dive into Randy's racing experience: factory contracts with Porsche, Mazda, Volvo, and Toyota. Winning the 24 Hours of Daytona not once, but twice, and his 2015 induction into the SCCA Hall of Fame. We'll cover his exploits at Thunderhill, VIR, Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca, Daytona, Pikes Peak, Sonoma, Lime Rock, Willow Springs, and more!  From humble origins in a Mk1 VW Golf (no, not a GTI), to a factory-backed FX16 Toyota Corolla, to setting a Laguna Seca lap record in a McLaren Senna. Randy even worked on the set of 2 Fast 2 Furious as a driving instructor for the film's stars: Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson, and Devon Aoki – to name a few.  Randy eventually met Jason while filming an uncooperative Cayman GT4 for Motor Trend, and, despite a rocky start when Jason unexpectedly flung a Range Rover off track while racing Randy in an Alfa Romeo 4C, the two teamed up again to film multiple Ultimate Drag Race, Lap Battle and ICONS episodes for Hagerty. The whole gang laments some of the most irritating modern car tech: excessively bright headlights, lights that are somehow off at night, ABS systems that fully shut down when traveling backwards, AEB overreach, and EPAS systems that completely ruin a car's limit handling by curtailing the driver's ability to quickly catch a slide (like the Shelby GT350 Randy repeatedly spun and Jason crinkled at Willow Springs – not to mention the Unplugged Performance Tesla Model 3 Randy famously wrecked at Pikes Peak).  Speaking of handling, Randy divulges his dislike of twitchy cars like the Jaguar F-Type R and XJ, the KTM X-Bow, and Ariel Atom. Jason on the other hand loves an ass-y car like the V12 Vantage S, but says the Lotus Exige V6 Cup was so tail-happy it was uncontrollable. The Porsche Carrera GT is somewhere in the middle with mixed reviews and experience all around. While on the topic of handling dynamics, Randy tells us his secret plan to invent a fix for the C8 Corvette's trailing throttle oversteer. He also gives praise to Porsche's Lars Kern for his work on the latest crop of RS products – which may or may not be Randy's favorite track cars of all time out of the box, alongside the 2014 Porsche 911 50th Anniversary Edition. All of which receive top marks on Randy's understeer spectrum, and are polar opposites of the likes of a 1960s Cadillac.  We'll touch on Randy's personal car collection as well, which includes a Volvo 740 sedan and wagon, his 1977 Pontiac Trans Am “Randit” (and its oil starvation woes), Toyota Tundra tow vehicle, VW Karmann Ghia and early Tesla Model S.  Plus, Derek invents a new phrase for “road rage”, Randy bitch slaps cars out of his way, and also beautifully sings Primus' Wynona's Big Brown Beaver. Carbon-Monocoque, Handarbeit, toller Sound und eine spektakuläre Optik: Die Rede ist vom Alfa Romeo 4C. Auf deutschen Straßen ist der kleine Sportwagen ein absoluter Exot und sorgt für viel Aufsehen! Wir durften den 4C Spider als limitiertes Sondermodell Italia fahren. Was wir zum Sound, dem Fahrerlebnis, der fehlenden Servolenkung und dem Doppelkupplungsgetriebe sagen, hört ihr in der neuesten Folge von "Erst fahren, dann reden"!

Siempre hablamos de que muchos de los nuevos modelos tienen una evidente falta de personalidad… esa es una cara de la moneda. La otra: Muchos de los que se van o ya se han ido, sí que tienen personalidad… ¡Y ya los echamos de menos! Me he dado cuenta de que 7 de los 10 son coupés o deportivos y 9 de las 10 tres puertas… Vamos con la lista de coches que, al menos yo, voy a echar de menos... algunos mucho de menos. 1. Alfa Romeo 4C (2013) Esta el primero y en un coche que echo de menos, más o menos, desde 2018. ¿Por qué? Porque intenté comprarme uno, una unidad concreta que era el de pruebas de prensa de Fiat en España. Incluso me dieron precio… pero alguien, de la casa, se me adelantó… ¡qué pena! 2. Dodge Viper SRT (2016) El Dodge Viper, a pesar de ser un coche moderno, aparecido en 1991 y fabricado hasta 2017 puede considerarse, con todos los honores, como un verdadero y legendario deportivo americano. En mi opinión las señas de identidad de esta auténtica bestia son dos: Una, su estética, que te puede gustar o no, pero que impresiona… al natural, os lo aseguro, mucho más que en foto. La segunda seña de identidad, su motor: Nada de un V8, sino en “pedazo” de V10 que en la versión SRT de 2016 ofrecía 654 CV… probé este coche y me impresionó… desde luego no era un coche fácil, pero… 3. Lancia Ypsilon 2ª generación (2011) En este caso, la desaparición fue doble, ya que en 2014 desaparecía no solo el Ypsilon sino la marca Lancia… que parece que va a volver. Sería muy buena noticia. 4. Mazda RX7 III (1992) Hablo de la 3ª y última generación y pese a ello es el más antiguo de esta lista. ¿Y por qué está? Primero, porque es un coche excepcional por estética, comportamiento y tecnología… yo diría que irrepetible. Luego, porque me llamo la atención que en un estudio que hizo la compañía británica de seguros GoShorty analizando las búsquedas en Google y el número de hashtag relacionados con diferentes modelos, este modelo ocupaba el numero 3 de esa lista… impresionante… 5. Nissan 370 Z (2008) Por desgracia en esta lista hay dos Nissan desaparecidos casi a la vez. No sé, imagino que Nissan sabe mejor que nadie lo que le conviene, pero es una pena que una marca que ha sido siempre, bien como Nissan o como Datsun, ser un referente Mundial entre los coches deportivos, renuncie a este tipo de coches. 6. Nissan GT-R (2007) No sé si más pena me da aún el GT-R, auténtico mata-gigantes y que se erigió en un duro rival entre otras marcas, de Porsche. Nos dejó en 2022 pero ya antes se “masticaba” la tragedia. Una verdadera pena. 7. Range Rover Evoque Coupé (2011) Un SUV coupé…,una versión inteligente porque su denominación coupé provenía de sus dos puertas laterales, no de una luneta absurdamente tendida. La razón de que se dejase de fabricar: Solo el 5 por ciento de los Evoque vendidos eran de 3 puertas. 8. Seat León III SC (2012) Otro coche que da pena. Porque el León III fue el primer Seat León con carrocería de 3 puertas, que muchos echábamos de menos... y ha desaparecido en 2018. Como fin de fiesta hubo una versión especial SC FR Limited Edition con motor TSi de 125 CV que se vendió a muy buen precio… y que seguro se cotizará, en su momento, como clásico. 9. Škoda Yeti (2009) ¿Un SUV entre la lista de coches que echo de menos? Pues sí. Me gusta la marca Škoda, aunque con todo el lío con la probable desaparición de Seat, no me gustaría cogerle manía. Pero este SUV, que no era demasiado SUV y era un buen coche para ciudad, me hizo “tilín”, lo confieso. Entre otras cosas por su estética… 10. Volkswagen Scirocco (2008) Otro coche desaparecido en 2017. A ver, os confieso que nunca me entusiasmo el último Scirocco, que veía demasiado próximo en prestaciones e incluso en estética, al Golf…Pero después de casi diez años VW ya no lo ofrece… y le echo de menos. VW no lo da por muerto y anuncia, yo diría “amenaza” …con un futuro posible regreso transformado en coche eléctrico. Conclusión. Estaba pensando que a lo mejor alguno echa de menos a otros VW, como la reencarnación de Beetle … yo no… Nunca me pareció un buen “remake”. Pero sí hay otros coches que echamos de menos… seguro que con vuestra ayuda, podemos hacer una segunda versión de este video… Coche del día. He elegido uno que podía haber estado en la lista, el Peugeot 208 GTi, con sus tres puertas. Estuve en la presentación en Niza de este coche de 204 CV y un bastidor de excelente puesta a punto… ya no lo encontrarás en la Web oficial para configurarlo… Otro 3 puertas casi coupé que ya empezamos a echar de menos…

Alfa Romeo. Elegir uno y solo un deportivo de toda la historia de Alfa Romeo es tarea difícil. Pero lo tengo claro: El Giulia 2000 GTV, o sea Gran Turismo Veloce de 1971… Actual: ¡Alfa Romeo no tiene en su gama actual un coupé! Tentado he estado de elegir al Alfa Romeo 4C que tanto me gustó, pero ya no se vende. Así que, dada la larga tradición de Alfa Romeo en berlinas deportivas, creo que el Giulia Competizione 2.0 litros turbo de 280 CV es un buen representante. Audi. El Audi Quattro. Y es que pocos coches deportivos supusieron un cambio tan radical. Poner tracción total en un coche deportivo para hacerlo más competitivo en rallyes, fue un acierto. Actual: Tampoco tengo dudas, el R8 Coupé V10 Performance Quattro, un coupé con motor central, más de 600 CV y tracción total. BMW. El BMW M3 de la primera serie, el E30 de 1986. Mentiría si dijese que los demás M3 no me gustan, pero el primero es para mí el que mejor representa el espíritu del M3. Actual: Voy a elegir un coche por el que me encantaría cambiar mi MX5: El BMW Z4 sDrive 3.0i de 258 CV y “solo”67.200 €. Una joya… Ferrari. Elegir entre el primer GTO de 1962 con su motor V12 de tres litros, con 6 carburadores y 300 CV y el Ferrari F40 de 1987 con su V8 Turbo de 485 CV, el último modelo lanzado en vida del “Commendatore” no lo tenía fácil. Creo que en esta ocasión voy a elegir el GTO… y es que como representante “Histórico” de la marca, prefiero un V12 atmosférico a un V8 turbo… Actual: El mejor, el más bestia y deportivo, de competición, el 296 GT3. Lamborghini. ¡El Miura! Si no es el coche más bonito de la historia es uno de los más bonitos de la historia, diseñado por el gran Marcello Gandini, con motor V12 y que creo la categoría de los superdeportivos. Actual: Podría ser el Huracán. Pero, ¡por Dios! No un Sterrato. O mejor un Aventador V12. Mazda. Creo que el Mazda RX7 Biturbo de la III generación, con sus 240 CV, es el mejor representante. En el área de miembros hemos hecho un vídeo recordando la prueba que hice de este modelo. Actual: Ahora sí, el MX5, pero el Roadster no el RF, para mí un Targa y no un coupé. Me sigue pareciendo más Roadster que deportivo, pero lo que ha cambiado es que Mazda no tiene otro modelo deportivo. Mercedes-Benz. Sin duda, el SL “alas de gaviota”. No me voy a extender mucho con este coche porque gracias a nuestros amigos de CEROaCIEN hicimos un monográfico sobre el modelo. Pero fue un coche que además de sus espectaculares puertas, aportó muchas cocas, por ejemplo, la inyección directa… ¡en 1954! Actual: Pues sino te conformas con el Mercedes AMG E53 4 Matic de 125.000 € y 435+22 CV tienes el Mercedes AMG GT de hasta 730 CV y hasta 424.570 € Porsche. Esto es divertido, porque voy a elegir como mejor deportivo de la historia del Porsche al peor: El 911-930 Turbo Para mí, en mi adolescencia, fue un icono. Actual: Voy a elegir al 718 Cayman GT4 RS que tiene más 500 CV, que a mí me llegan, pero vale “solo 167.262 €… “solo”. Pero es que el 91i Sport Classic cuesta, para mí no o vale, 324.991 euros. Renault. Entre la berlinetta Alpine-Renault A110 y el R5 Turbo de motor central… ¡me quedó con el 5 Turbo! ¿Por qué? Primero, porque es más “Renault” que el Alpine y después porque Renault “inventó” el correr con coches que parecían normales y corrientes por fuera, pero que eran verdaderos monstruos. Actual: Pero entre la gama actual, no hay duda, el A110 R… Algunos diréis que no es un Renault. Pero, a diferencia del 911, algo ha cambiado: El nuevo Alpine lleva motor central. Toyota. Hay mucho donde elegir, ese es el problema… pero me voy a dejar llevar por el corazón. Confieso que posiblemente Toyota tenga coupés mejores, pero el 2000 GT me parece una belleza. Actual: Esto sí que es fácil, el GR Supra. Si, será fruto de un acuerdo con BMW, pero me da igual, es un excelente coupé, bonito, eficaz y con 340 CV. Coche del día. Muchos ya sabéis que mi primer coche fue un Seat 850 Normal. Y en ese momento no soñaba con un Porsche 911 Turbo, para mi inalcanzable, sino con el coche del día de hoy, el Seat 850 Sport Coupé que también era inalcanzable… pero menos.

Muchos me habéis preguntado por los coches que más me gustan entre los que he probado. En el primer vídeo mis coches favoritos, pensé en organizarlos por épocas pero luego he pensado que mejor, por tipos de coches. Y hoy tocan los más divertidos, los deportivos. Me ha costado elegir y pasar de una lista preliminar de casi 20 coches a una final en la que he dejado en solo 5… ¿y por que en 5? Para no enrollarme demasiado y porque, como ya sabéis muchos de vosotros ¡estoy de mudanza!… menudo lío. Tengo cajas y cajas de revistas y cajas y cajas de fotos y cajas y cajas de diapositivas… todo desordenado. Y para hacer estos vídeos me gusta rescatar esas fotos y esos artículos, pero pueden pasar meses antes de que lo consiga. Mis cinco elegidos son: Alfa Romeo 4C, BMW M3 E30, Citroën Visa GTi (no te pierdas la foto de la prueba), Porsche 928 S (no te pierdas la foto de mi accidente) y VW Golf GTi 16v MKII… un repóquer de ases.

Tesla - für viele das Erste, was einem in den Sinn kommt, wenn es um Elektroautos geht. Viele haben schon beim Roadster aufgehorcht. Aber noch viel mehr Menschen haben große Augen bekommen, als sie zum ersten Mal ein Model S vorbei gleiten sahen. Das Model X mit seinen spektakulären Falcon Wing Doors hat für viel Furore gesorgt. Und das Model ☰ noch viel mehr, obwohl es bisher nicht mehr zu sehen gab als fahrbare Prototypen. Aber Tesla ist eigentlich noch mehr. Die Gigafactory, welche die Akkus liefern soll, die man dringen brauchen wird, wenn Model S, X und 3 zu hunderttausenden verkauft werden, wird das bis dato flächenmäßig größte Gebäude der Erde. Diese Über-Fabrik soll bald so viele Batterien produzieren wie aktuell der komplette Rest der Welt zusammen genommen. Und nicht nur für Autos werden dort Akkus gebaut, sondern auch für Teslas "Powerwall" genannten Heimspeicher bzw. die "Powerpacks" für diejenigen, die es etwas größer brauchen. Wer will und kann deckt sich dann noch sein Hausdach mit Solar-Dachziegeln ein, dem neuesten Produkt von Tesla. Damit ergibt sich ein durchdachtes, effizientes und autarkes System: Das Sonnenlicht wird durch die Dachziegel in Strom umgewandelt, der in der Powerwall gespeichert wird. Damit lassen sich die Verbraucher im Haus versorgen und im Idealfall auch gleich noch das E-Auto in der Garage aufladen. Tesla hat viel frischen Wind in verschiedenste Bereiche unseres Alltags gebracht. Logisch, dass wir dem Thema eine komplette Episode widmen. For the first time in a little while we sit down without guests and catch up on what we've been up to.  Matt and Thad both had an afternoon with the Alfa Romeo 4C and Challenger Hellcat, Zack bought a Crown Victoria detective car and I continued to produce way too many podcasts.  In addition Matt talks about his trip to Europe for the Forza Horizon 2 launch event along with his first impressions of the game and a mini review of the Audi R8 V10+.  We also cover the RS5 Cabriolet, disparity in YouTube content production, glory holes (yes again) and how much context can color language for use on televion.
