Plus some allegedly fabulous but forbidden fruit: the Peugeot 205 GTi Rally and Renault Clio Williams. Then we'll dive into the Jeep XJ Cherokee which Jason just did a Revelations episode on. It began as the unibody successor to the giant and inefficient Jeep Wagoneer – a honking SUV with CJ Wrangler guts inside – which, incidentally, was a recipe being emulating across the globe as Toyota and Land Rover (to name a few) were also building more comfortable and luxurious SUVs using drivetrain bits from their more serious off-roaders like the BJ/FJ and Series II/III. The Cherokee followed the Range Rover away from the body-on-frame chassis and adopted unitary construction methods resulting in genuine handling prowess – even out-gripping a W201 Mercedes-Benz 190E. In fact, the chassis bones are so good you can find XJs competing amongst much sportier cars in 24 Hours of Lemons races across the country. Jason even deems the XJ one of his best back road drives ever. Sadly, early cars were excruciatingly slow thanks to an anemic Renault-built AMC engine. But that didn't stop Jason from getting one of his very first speeding tickets in one. The little XJ made a lasting impression on nearly everyone who had the pleasure of experiencing one – including Derek, whose experiences in his mom's are literally his earliest datable memories. The little Jeep was so popular that when the Grand Cherokee came along to replace it, so many people were still clamoring for the original Cherokee that Jeep decided they would just build both. After the Jeep, we jump into VW's perennial hatchback hit: the GTI. All 8 generations have their pros and cons: Jason proclaims the VR6 to be one of the best sounding engines ever produced, and the 1.8T the worst VW ever made. The MQB platform underpinning the latest cars is declared spectacular. The Mk4 is a chubby baby Audi/Mercedes. The Mk6 fixes a lot of the hamster-styling of the Mk5, but the Mk5 has the better steering, just beware understeer. The Mk7 is a delight, especially if you can find yourself a Rabbit or Sport edition in Great Falls Green or Cornflower Blue. But even with a fancy color scheme, the humble e-Golf makes the better city car. Of note: Derek finally goes large-barging with a crew made up of a 560SEC, F-Type SVR, F-Pace SVR, a pair of R129s (one dogleg), and A4 2.8 Avant 5-speed, with his Mk5 GTI track car as a palette cleanser. Lastly, Jim Carrey, Mike Myers and Leslie Nielsen are national treasures, and their comedy blockbusters from the 80s, 90s and 2000s are exquisite. But do they hold up as well today as a Jeep XJ? Driving the relatively new Suzuki Swift Hybrid five-door hatchback – available inthree models, I drove the top-line GLX. The latest Suzuki Swift now in its fourthgeneration comes only in hybrid form – combining a 1.2-litre three-cylinderengine with what's described as a mild hybrid system – a 2.3kW integrated startergenerator and a 12-volt lithium-ion battery. The GLX grade at $29,490 drive-awaysharply priced and highly equipped, with CVT transmission and manual shiftpaddles, larger 16-inch alloy wheels, climate control air, and wireless phonecharging. The latest Swift looks little different to its predecessor. Despite thehybrid tag there is no EV-only motoring, this is predominately a petrol car withminimal electric motor torque – as such the drive feels little different to a purepetrol model - the three-cylinder engine has a distinct hum to it while with an all-up weight of just 957kg the Swift GLX automatic is a particularly nimble small cararound town. I managed 5.3L/100km and whilst that's impressive it does need adiet of dearer 95-octane petrol. A pleasant small hatchback in many ways, wellpriced, highly equipped with safety and driving technology but some elements ofthis latest Suzuki Swift hybrid left me thinking it was becoming a little dated. Driving the Suzuki Swift today, a small five-door hatch in its fourth generation,now in mild hybrid form and little different visually. I drove the top spec Swift GLXcombining a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with a 2.3kW integrated startergenerator and a 12-volt lithium-ion battery driving through a continuouslyvariable automatic with manual shift paddles. Super light at just 957Kg just sonimble and easy to drive – the three cylinders a little noisy, it has a hum about it,the steering light and the ride comforting for such a small car. The interior a bigimprovement with a larger touchscreen, nice seats, a little tight in the rear butunderstandable for a small hatch, quality from the Japan's small car companyhard to criticize. The big question is how the hybrid element is employed – itdoesn't drive in pure electric mode but adds a touch more power to the three-cylinder engine when required. A pleasant small car, but at times a little courseand not as sweet as the previous 1.0-litre turbo Swift I remember. Good economy,5.3L/100km but now requiring dearer 95 grade petrol. Suzuki me pidió hacer un podcast del nuevo Swift, un coche que acabo de probar y que me ha gustado. Y se me ocurrió esta idea, la de hablar de Suzuki como marca que resulta simpática a una gran mayoría de usuarios, tenga o no un Suzuki… Y es que hay marcas y hay coches que “caen” bien, que resultan simpáticas. Y una de ellas es Suzuki. Seguramente, en España, tiene mucho que ver que fue la marca que, gracias a la saga SJ, convirtió el TT en un territorio de ocio, cuando antes lo era solo de trabajo. Seguramente también influye que son coches que nunca se rompen, de estética agradable, incluso de colores atrevidos… y divertidos. En España todo comenzó con el SJ, pero el nuevo Swift, que acabó de probar, sigue esta filosofía. Alguno podéis pensar que es un planteamiento un tanto banal hablar de una marca porque es “simpática”. Os voy a demostrar que no es así. Y de una forma muy simple: Un coche malo o feo o que da problemas, que es tosco y desagradable de conducir… desde luego no resulta nada “simpático” … con lo cual este adjetivo resulta no ser tan banal. Pero hay más. En un momento en que los aficionados y yo diría que una gran mayoría de usuarios critican la falta de seducción que tienen gran parte de la oferta de automóviles, despertar simpatía resulta ser un rasgo de personalidad que no todos tienen. Y resulta más meritorio en modelos relativamente asequibles, porque en un coche caro o de alta gama, es más sencillo ser “atractivo”. Para entender como es Suzuki hoy vale la pena recordar cómo empezó todo. Fue en 1909, ¡hace más de un siglo! cuando Michio Suzuki fundó la “Suzuki Loom Works Hamamatsu” obviamente en Japón una empresa destinada a la fabricación de telas, que alcanzó notables beneficios. La Segunda Guerra Mundial fue un duro revés, un volver a empezar con éxitos, fracasos y una importante crisis financiera… Y decidieron en 1952 expandirse al sector del transporte con unas eficientes bicicletas motorizadas Power Free y Diamond Free, de 36 y 60 cm3, realmente unos ciclomotores… Suzuki hasta nuestros días nunca ha dejado las 2 ruedas. El gran salto se produce el 1955 cuando Suzuki lanza un coche mínimo, el Suzukilight, con motor de dos tiempos y 360 cm3, una verdadera revolución en Japón. Y más revolución fue cuando en 1961 se lanza el Suzuki Carry, una pequeña y práctica furgoneta. Seguimos en Japón y en 1968 comienza a rodar el primer prototipo del que sería un coche revolucionario para la marca: El Jimny. El 1970 comienza su venta en Japón con la denominación LJ10 con motor de dos tiempos, 360 cm3 y 25 CV. En el 78 llega a Europa, pero ya la versión LJ50 de 550 cm3. El coche no deja de evolucionar, crece ligeramente en tamaño, equipa motores de 4 cilindros y 4 tiempos y llega a contar con motores Turbodiésel. Nos venimos a España. En los años 80 en España la gran mayoría de los todoterrenos eran vehículos dedicados al trabajo, ya sea para operaciones agrícolas o forestales, diversos tipos de servicios públicos como policía o bomberos y, por supuesto, no nos olvidamos de los TT del ejército. Eran vehículos prácticos, nada baratos y muy austeros. Pero en 1985 cambia radicalmente ese panorama. Suzuki llega a un acuerdo con Santana para fabricar en España el SJ410 un coche pequeño, económico, robusto… y, ¡cómo no! simpático. El Suzuki es todo un éxito porque convierte al TT en vehículo de ocio y no solo conquista a los aficionados a salir el campo, sino que por su economía y robustez acaba convirtiéndose incluso en coche urbano… La tracción total ha cumplido más de 50 años de su presencia en los modelos de Suzuki. Está más vigente que nunca y es uno de los pilares de la marca. La actual tracción AllGrip ha sabido adaptarse a diferentes tipologías de automóvil y ha llegado a los cinco segmentos en los que Suzuki está presente: compacto, urbano, todoterreno, SUV y Crossover. Todos los modelos Suzuki comercializados en España los puedes conseguir con tracción total… ¿Qué otra marca puede decir eso? En 2003 se produce un hecho muy relevante: Suzuki crea su propia filial en España para distribuir, comercializar y prestar asistencia a todos los automóviles Suzuki y en 2014, Suzuki Motor Ibérica absorbe a Suzuki Motor España, filial de Suzuki Motor Corporation dedicada a la fabricación y comercialización de motocicletas. El primer Suzuki Swift 1.3 Gti llegado a España, con motor de 1.3 litros, 16 válvulas y 101 CV para un peso de 785 kg era una bomba. El actual Swift de la cuarta generación ha madurado mucho, cuenta con un diseño atractivo, con la fiabilidad proverbial de todos los Suzuki, resulta asequible y ofrece una calidad de rodadura sorprendente. Del motor de 1.2 litros, tres cilindros y 82 CV lo mejor que puede decirse es que no parece 3 cilindros, no tiene esa vibración típica de estos motores. Cuenta con el sistema de hibridación ligera de 12 voltios que te permite tener la etiqueta ECO y una ayudita extra para el motor térmico, muy “ligera” como puedes suponer, pero que se agradece. Hicimos un podcast de coches pesados… y rápidamente muchos me pedisteis éste, el de coches ligeros. ¡Y rápidamente lo hemos hecho! ¡Somos muy cumplidores! Pasamos de hablar de coches de 3 toneladas a coches de 300 y pico kg… ¡qué diferencia! Y os traigo nada menos que 15… porque he hecho unas pequeñas trampitas. Y es que hacer hoy día y con coches actuales de venta al público una lista de coches ligeros, casi equivale a hacer una lista de coches sencillos y baratos. Y es que podría deciros, sencilla y llanamente, que “los coches ligeros han muerto”. Por eso junto a coches de serie de venta en la actualidad os he traído algunos ejemplos de coche ligeros que no son actuales, pero son una referencia en este asunto. Y ya, para acabar de complicarlo todo he elegido coches actuales o muy actuales, pero… ¡un pero muy gordo!... ¡artesanales! 1. LCC Rocket. 386 kg. (1991). Con solo 386 kilogramos, anunciaba un 0 a 100 km/h en 4,4 segundos y solo se fabricaron 55 unidades. 2. Caterham Seven 170R. 440 kg. (Actualidad). La versión 170 R con motor Suzuki turboalimentado de 660 cm3 y 84 CV, marca sólo 440 kg en la báscula, lo que le permite acelerar de 0 a 100 en 6,9 segundos. 3. Renault Twizy. 450 kg. (Actualidad). Un coche diseñado y nacido para la ciudad y que debe su peso, entre otras cosas, a su reducido tamaño: 2,3 metros de largo y 1,4 metros de ancho. A pesar de ser eléctrico, era muy ligero, pero eso se pagaba en autonomía, que rondaba los 60 kilómetros. 4. De Tomaso Vallelunga. 500 kg. (1964). Cuando hablas de “De Tomaso” muchos piensan en preciosos deportivos con motor V8… lo que es cierto. Pero entre los años 1964 y 1968 nació este Vallelunga con un motor de 1,5 litros del Ford Cortina. 5. Fiat 500. 500 kg. (1957). Solo pesaba 500 kilos, pero su nombre no proviene del peso sino de la cilindrada de su motor bicilíndrico de refrigeración por aire, inicialmente 479 cm3 y 20 CV. 6. Lotus Elan. 584 kg. (1960). El mismo tío que decía “quítame un kg antes de darme un caballo” diseñó este coche. Hablamos por supuesto de Colin Chapman que fue el creador del Lotus Elan que pesaba 584 kilos, gracias a su chasis de viga central de acero y su carrocería de fibra de vidrio. 7. MINI 850. 580 kg. (1959). Quizás en este caso la ligereza fue una consecuencia, más que un objetivo. Porque el Mini era un coche pequeño, muy pequeño. Y bastante simple. Con el motor de cuatro cilindros y 850 cm3, el Mini pesaba 580 kilogramos. 8. Ariel Atom. 595 kg. (Actualidad). Tengo debilidad por los modelos fabricados por Ariel y en particular por el Atom. Hablamos de un biplaza con motor del Civic Type R, un 2.0 Turbo de 320 CV para 595 kg y consigues un “pepino” capaz de acelerar de 0 a 100 km/h en apenas 2,8 segundos. 9. Citroën AX. 640 kg. (1986). En el caso del AX la ligereza no era el objetivo principal… pero era el objetivo. Citroën quería un coche con un consumo muy bajo y para eso el peso es clave. El diseño del chasis, el empleo masivo del plástico e ideas muy originales, como el portón trasero sin estructura metálica, sino usando el propio cristal como estructura, permitieron un peso de 640 kg. 10. Spartan. 680 kg. (Actualidad). Este coche no es de las islas británicas, pero sí de una isla muy grande: Australia. La receta es parecida a la del Ariel: estructura tubular, carrocería de fibra de carbono, motor trasero 2.4 Honda de 275 CV y un peso de 680 kg en su versión básica. La aceleración de 0 a 100 es de sólo 3,3 segundos. 11. Suzuki Ignis. 935 kg. (Actualidad). El Ignis es el campeón de los coches ligeros producidos en grandes series. Hablamos de la versión básica, el Hybrid 2WD con el acabado más reducido con un peso en orden de marcha de sólo 935 kg. 12. Renault Twingo. 940 kg. (Actualidad). Aquí hacemos otra pequeña trampa porque en el momento de grabar este video la versión con motor de gasolina 1.0 SCE de 65 CV, la más ligera y que pesa solo 940 kg, no está disponible en España sonde solo se vende el eléctrico. Su aceleración de 0 a 100 km/h llega a los 15,1 segundos. 12+1. Mitsubishi Space Star. 940 kg. (Actualidad). El actual en su versión básica 1.2 pesa también 940 kg. con motor de gasolina de 1,2 litros y 71 CV. Tampoco es un “dragster” y acelera de 0 a 100 en 14,1 segundos. 14. Suzuki Swift. 965 kg. (Actualidad). Cuenta con la misma mecánica híbrida ligera de 83 CV del Ignis y acelera de 0 a 100 en 12 segundos además de tener un consumo muy bajo, en ciclo combinado: 4,7 litros cada 100 km. 15. Kia Picanto. 978 kg. (Actualidad). Y cerramos esta lista con el Picanto, al borde de la tonelada de peso en su variante más básica con motor 1.0 DPi de 67 CV pesa tan sólo 978 kg. acelera de 0 a 100 en 14,6 segundos y su consumo combinado es de 5,0 litros cada 100 km.

ROMA (ITALPRESS) - Sempre e solo ibrida, la nuova versione della Suzuki Swift non tradisce la sua storia ventennale, ma evolve per migliorare ancora le performance dinamiche, riducendo le emissioni stabilmente sotto i 100 grammi a chilometro. Un risultato reso possibile dal nuovo motore a tre cilindri, uno in meno del predecessore, che è più leggero, genera la stessa potenza attorno agli 80 cavalli ma offre molta più coppia, ben 112 Nm a 4.500 giri. Il sistema ibrido a 12 volt, infatti, ora assiste il motore in fase di accelerazione con 60 Nm di coppia aggiuntiva, ben integrandosi al cambio a 5 marce manuale, che come quello automatico CVT, è stato rivisto. A livello di stile Swift non è stata stravolta, perché toccare un modello di successo è sempre rischioso. Forti dei 10 milioni di esemplari venduti nel mondo in quasi 20 anni, quindi i ritocchi sono minimi, e visibili sul frontale e nel posteriore dove spiccano i fari a Led. All'interno è invece tutta nuova la posizione di guida, che grazie al cruscotto “driver oriented” con i comandi leggermente angolati, è più avvolgente. Nuovo anche il touchscreen ad alta definizione da 9 pollici con collegamento allo smartphone per Apple CarPlay e Android Auto tramite Wi-Fi e Usb, che gestisce anche riconoscimento vocale, riproduzione musicale Bluetooth e informazioni sullo stato del veicolo. Disponibile il sistema di navigazione integrato. La gamma colori comprende nove opzioni monocolore e quattro bicolore. Confermato il sistema Allgrip Auto che si innesta quando rileva una perdita di trazione delle ruote anteriori, e tramite un giunto viscoso, si innesta per trasferire la coppia alle ruote posteriori, fornendo una trazione supplementare per la guida su strade innevate o altre superfici scivolose. An investigation's underway after Auckland Council staff classified an elderly homeless woman, who was later found dead in her car, as a freedom camper, and had not done more to help her. Yesterday City Mission staff went to check on the woman, in her 70s, and found her dead in the red Suzuki Swift. The car was parked on St Vincent Avenue in the affluent suburb of Remuera. Auckland City Missioner Helen Robinson talks to Lisa Owen.  

A blue 2018 Suzuki Swift car has been apparently abandoned at the New Plymouth Airport carpark for two years.  Parked up as people and planes come and go; the tidy little car has been a constant during the pandemic with no-one returning to collect it. Now the airport's giving it one last push to find the owner before it tows little blue away. New Plymouth Airport chief executive David Scott talks to Lisa Owen.
