This week's Video of The Week has it if you don't know what I am talking about.A sizeable crushing machine compresses the items with colossal force, and in the end, an iPad can incorporate the functions of traditional items. It's not the most amazing ad ever, certainly not as bold as Steve Jobs's 1984 ad, but it's in the same genre. The past must be crushed to release new freedom and creativity for a fraction of the price and, often, the power and flexibility.Oh, and it's thin, very thin.I was not offended. Devin at TechCrunch was. He leads this week's essay of the week with his “Apple's ‘Crush' ad is disgusting” and does not mince words:What we all understand, though — because unlike Apple ad executives, we live in the world — is that the things being crushed here represent the material, the tangible, the real. And the real has value. Value that Apple clearly believes it can crush into yet another black mirror. This belief is disgusting to me. And apparently to many others, as well.He also makes the incorrect point that:A virtual guitar can't replace a real guitar; that's like thinking a book can replace its author. It's more like a digital book replacing a paper book than the author being replaced. Oh wait… that has happened. That said, a virtual guitar can replace a real guitar, and an AI guitar can even replace a virtual guitar—and be better. That is not to say there are no more actual traditional guitars. They will be a choice, not a necessity, especially for people like me who can't play a guitar but will be able to play these.Devin had his supporters in the comments (go read them).Handmaid's Tale director Reed Morano told Apple CEO Tim Cook to “read the room” in a post on X. Matthew Carnal captured my somewhat unkind instinct:There were a lot more reactions to the Apple ad haters like Matthews.Of course, many old instrument lovers (the instruments, not their age) hated the Ad. By Thursday, this being the times we live in, Apple apologized for the ad:Tor Myhren, Apple's vice president of marketing, said the company “missed the mark.”“Creativity is in our DNA at Apple, and it's incredibly important to us to design products that empower creatives all over the world,” Myhren told Ad Age. “Our goal is to always celebrate the myriad of ways users express themselves and bring their ideas to life through iPad. We missed the mark with this video, and we're sorry.”Please judge for yourself below, but my 2c is that the ad was a moderately underwhelming attempt to champion innovation. It is certainly not offensive unless you are ultra-sensitive and have feelings for pianos, guitars, and paint. Oh, and hate attempts to recreate them in a more usable form. And Apple really should have taken the high ground here.I spent some of the week in LA at the CogX Festival and virtually at the Data Driven Summit by @AndreRetterath. The latter focused on what is happening in Venture Capital, as do several of this week's essays. Milken's event was running in LA also. Its attitude to Venture Capital is best summed up here:“We're all being told in the market that DPI is the new IRR,” B Capital's Raj Ganguly said onstage Wednesday. (The acronym sandwich means investment firms have to actually prove that their investments actually generate cash through a metric called distributions to paid-in capital, not just theoretically, through internal rate of return.) “Even the venture panel at Milken is at the end of the day on Wednesday,” he joked, meaning that it didn't get top billing at the conference, which had started a couple days earlier. This does sum up where we are. Hundreds of Billions of dollars are still trapped inside companies funded in 2020-2022, with little prospect of producing returns. The impact is that there is less funding for current startups (see the Carta piece below). And much of what is flowing is flowing to AI and into a very small number of companies (see Tomasz Tungux below). However, innovation and funding are still possible. This week's Startup of the Week is Wayve, a UK autonomous driving platform that seems to agree with Elon Musk that cameras are sufficient to teach a car to drive. Wayve's ambitions go beyond Cars (also like Musk) but differ in that the product is available to all developers to embed in their products.“Very soon you'll be able to buy a new car, and it'll have Wayve's AI on it … Then this goes into enabling all kinds of embodied AI, not just cars, but other forms of robotics. I think the ultimate thing that we want to achieve here is to go way beyond where AI is today with language models and chatbots. But to really enable a future where we can trust intelligent machines that we can delegate tasks to, and of course they can enhance our lives and self-driving will be the first example of that.”Love that attitude.Essays of the WeekApple's ‘Crush' ad is disgustingDevin Coldewey, 1:58 PM PDT • May 9, 2024Apple can generally be relied on for clever, well-produced ads, but it missed the mark with its latest, which depicts a tower of creative tools and analog items literally crushed into the form of the iPad.Apple has since apologized for the ad and canceled plans to televise it. Apple's VP of Marketing Tor Myhren told Ad Age: “We missed the mark with this video, and we're sorry.” Apple declined to offer further comment to TechCrunch. But many, including myself, had a negative and visceral reaction to this, and we should talk about why. It's not just because we are watching stuff get crushed. There are countless video channels dedicated to crushing, burning, exploding and generally destroying everyday objects. Plus, of course, we all know that this kind of thing happens daily at transfer stations and recycling centers. So it isn't that. And it isn't that the stuff is itself so valuable. Sure, a piano is worth something. But we see them blown up in action movies all the time and don't feel bad. I like pianos, but that doesn't mean we can't do without a few disused baby grands. Same for the rest: It's mostly junk you could buy off Craigslist for a few bucks, or at a dump for free. (Maybe not the editing station.)The problem isn't with the video itself, which in fairness to the people who staged and shot it, is actually very well done. The problem is not the media, but the message. We all get the ad's ostensible point: You can do all this stuff in an iPad. Great. We could also do it on the last iPad, of course, but this one is thinner (no one asked for that, by the way; now cases won't fit) and some made-up percentage better. What we all understand, though — because unlike Apple ad executives, we live in the world — is that the things being crushed here represent the material, the tangible, the real. And the real has value. Value that Apple clearly believes it can crush into yet another black mirror. This belief is disgusting to me. And apparently to many others, as well.Destroying a piano in a music video or Mythbusters episode is actually an act of creation. Even destroying a piano (or monitor, or paint can, or drum kit) for no reason at all is, at worst, wasteful! But what Apple is doing is destroying these things to convince you that you don't need them — all you need is the company's little device, which can do all that and more, and no need for annoying stuff like strings, keys, buttons, brushes or mixing stations. We're all dealing with the repercussions of media moving wholesale toward the digital and always-online. In many ways, it's genuinely good! I think technology has been hugely empowering. But in other, equally real ways, the digital transformation feels harmful and forced, a technotopian billionaire-approved vision of the future where every child has an AI best friend and can learn to play the virtual guitar on a cold glass screen.Does your child like music? They don't need a harp; throw it in the dump. An iPad is good enough. Do they like to paint? Here, Apple Pencil, just as good as pens, watercolors, oils! Books? Don't make us laugh! Destroy them. Paper is worthless. Use another screen. In fact, why not read in Apple Vision Pro, with even faker paper? What Apple seems to have forgotten is that it is the things in the real world — the very things Apple destroyed — that give the fake versions of those things value in the first place.A virtual guitar can't replace a real guitar; that's like thinking a book can replace its author. That doesn't mean we can't value both for different reasons. But the Apple ad sends the message that the future it wants doesn't have bottles of paint, dials to turn, sculpture, physical instruments, paper books. Of course, that's the future it's been working on selling us for years now, it just hadn't put it quite so bluntly before. When someone tells you who they are, believe them. Apple is telling you what it is, and what it wants the future to be, very clearly. If that future doesn't disgust you, you're welcome to it.Apple apologizes for iPad ‘Crush' ad that ‘missed the mark'/The company says ‘we're sorry' after its ad was seen as dismissive by the creatives Apple typically tries to court.By Emma Roth, a news writer who covers the streaming wars, consumer tech, crypto, social media, and much more. Previously, she was a writer and editor at MUO.May 9, 2024 at 1:22 PM PDTApple has apologized after a commercial meant to showcase its brand-new iPad Pro drew widespread criticism among the creative community. In a statement provided to Ad Age, Tor Myhren, Apple's vice president of marketing, said the company “missed the mark.”“Creativity is in our DNA at Apple, and it's incredibly important to us to design products that empower creatives all over the world,” Myhren told Ad Age. “Our goal is to always celebrate the myriad of ways users express themselves and bring their ideas to life through iPad. We missed the mark with this video, and we're sorry.”On Tuesday, Apple introduced the M4-powered iPad Pro, which the company described as its thinnest product ever. To advertise all the creative possibilities with the iPad, it released a “Crush!” commercial that shows things like a piano, record player, paint, and other works flattening under the pressure of a hydraulic press. At the end, only one thing remains: an iPad Pro.The ad rubbed some creatives the wrong way. Hugh Grant called it a “destruction of human experience,” while Handmaid's Tale director Reed Morano told Apple CEO Tim Cook to “read the room” in a post on X. Apple didn't immediately respond to The Verge's request for comment.Milken's New Power PlayersBy Cory WeinbergMay 8, 2024, 5:00pm PDTIt's no secret that the suits at the annual big-money confab put on by the Milken Institute this week have few spending limits. Staring you in the face in the lobby of the Beverly Hilton is a booth set up by Bombardier, marketing its private jets to attendees. (A new 10-seater costs $32 million, I learned.)What attendees can't really buy, however, is time. The soundtrack of the Los Angeles conference might as well have been a ticking clock. Fund managers at private equity and venture capital firms are running out of time to distribute cash to their investors, a task complicated by the paucity of either mergers or public offerings that typically provide VC and PE firms with a way to cash out. The fact that interest rates now appear likely to stay higher for longer doesn't help. That meant a lot of conversations at the conference weren't about grand investment strategies. Instead, people were conferring about financial tactics to distribute cash or kick the can down the road by selling stakes on the secondary markets or spinning up continuation funds, essentially rolling investors' commitments forwards—not the most inspiring stuff. “We're all being told in the market that DPI is the new IRR,” B Capital's Raj Ganguly said onstage Wednesday. The new kings of the conference were firms with a lot more time to play with—that is, sovereign wealth funds with buckets of oil and natural gas money, or pension funds with long-term investment horizons rather than shorter 10-year fund lives. The contrast here is embodied in the financial concept of duration: How long do you actually need to get cash back on your investment? And how sensitive is it to interest rate hikes? The sentiment was everywhere. I shared a Lyft ride with one PE investor last night who called sovereign wealth funds “the only game in town” for PE firms raising new money. Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Capital and the Qatar Investment Authority were two of the conference's top sponsors, meaning they were paying up to explain themselves to the finance and tech universe. That tactic seemed to be working. “You're going to have people lining up their business cards for capital from QIA, I can already see,” quipped Leon Kalvaria, an executive at Citi, onstage with QIA's head of funds, Mohsin Tanveer Pirzada. Not everyone will suck it up, of course. These funds often get tagged with a “dumb money” label—because they sometimes drive up prices for the rest of the investment world. They still have to face questions about who they are, their source of funds, and the sometimes authoritative regimes behind them. For now, though, it's their time in the spotlight. Ho Nam on VC's Power LawLessons from Arthur Rock, Steve Jobs, Don Lucas, Paul Graham and beyond.MARIO GABRIELE, MAY 07, 2024Friends, We're back with our latest edition of “Letters to a Young Investor,” the series designed to give readers like you an intimate look at the strategies, insights, and wisdom of the world's best investors. We do that via a back-and-forth correspondence that we publish in full – giving you a chance to peek into the inbox of legendary venture capitalists. Below, you'll find my second letter with Altos co-founder and managing director Ho Nam. For those who are just joining us, Ho is, in my opinion, one of the great investors of the past couple of decades and a true student of the asset class.Because of his respect for the practice of venture capital, I was especially excited to talk to him about today's topic: learning from the greats. Who were Ho's mentors? Which investors does he most admire and why? What lessons from venture's past should be better remembered by today's managers? Lessons from Ho* Prepare for one true winner. Even skilled investors often have just one or two outlier bets over the course of their career. Because of venture's power law, their returns may dwarf the dividends of all other investments combined. Your mission is to find these legendary businesses, engage with them deeply, and partner for decades. * Focus on the company. Venture capital is full of short-term incentives. Instead of focusing on raising new vintages or building out Altos as a money management firm, Ho and his partners devote themselves to their portfolio companies. Though firm building is important, if you find great companies and work with them closely, you will have plenty of available options. * Pick the right role models. Ho chose his mentors carefully. Though there have certainly been louder and flashier investors over the past four decades, Ho learned the most from Arthur Rock, Don Lucas, and Arnold Silverman. All were understated and focused on the craft of investing. Find the people you consider true practitioners, and study their work. * Watch and learn. Learning from the greats can be done from a distance and may not include a memorable anecdote or pithy saying. Ho's biggest lessons came from observing the habits of practitioners like Rock and Lucas, not via a structured mentorship or dramatic episode. It's by studying the everyday inputs of the greats that you may gain the most wisdom.Mario's letterSubject: Learning from the greatsFrom: Mario GabrieleTo: Ho NamDate: Friday, April 12 2024 at 1:59 PM EDTHo, After moving out of New York City (at least for a little bit), I'm writing to you from a small house on Long Island. At current count, companies on Carta closed 1,064 new funding rounds during the first quarter of the year, down 29% compared with the prior quarter. The decline was sharpest at the early stages of the venture lifecycle: Deal count fell by 33% at the seed stage in Q1 and 36% at Series A. Instead of new primary funding events, many companies opted to raise bridge rounds. At both seed and Series A, more than 40% of all financings in Q1 were bridge rounds. Series B wasn't far behind, at 38%. VCs were still willing to spend big on certain deals. Despite the decrease in round count, total cash invested increased slightly in Q1, reaching $16.3 billion. But when it came to negotiating their valuations, many startups had to settle: 23% of all new rounds in Q1 were down rounds, the highest rate in more than five years. After experiencing a pandemic-era surge and subsequent correction, the venture market settled into a quieter place in 2023. So far, that relative tranquility has continued into 2024.Q1 highlights* VCs look to the West: Startups based in the West census region captured 62% of all venture capital raised by companies on Carta in Q1, the highest quarterly figure since Q1 2019. The Northeast, South, and Midwest all saw their market share decline.* The Series C market bounces back: Series C startups raised $4.6 billion in new capital in Q1, a 130% increase from the previous quarter. The median primary Series C valuation was $195.7 million, up 48% from the prior quarter.* Layoffs still linger: Companies on Carta laid off more than 28,000 employees in Q1. But job cuts have grown less frequent since January, with March seeing the fewest monthly layoffs in nearly two years.Note: If you're looking for more industry-specific data, download the addendum to this report for an extended dataset. Key trendsThe current Q1 figures of 1,064 total rounds and $16.3 billion in cash raised will both increase in the weeks to come, as companies continue to report transactions from the quarter. With those projected increases, the final data for Q1 will likely look quite similar to fundraising numbers from each of the past few quarters. Those quarterly fundraising numbers from 2023 ended up looking fairly similar to 2018, 2019, and the first half of 2020. In terms of numbers of deals and cash raised, it's looking more and more like the pandemic bull market will go down as an anomalous stretch in what has otherwise been a fairly steady market. After apparently reaching a plateau during 2023, the rate of down rounds experienced another notable increase during Q1 2024, jumping to 23%. The median time between startup rounds is roughly two to three years, depending on the stage. This timeline means that many companies raising new funding in Q1 would have last raised funding sometime in 2021, when valuations were soaring across the venture landscape. Considering how valuations have declined in the time since, it makes sense that down rounds are still prevalent. Companies in the West census region combined to bring in 53.3% of all capital raised by startups on Carta from Q2 2023 through Q1 2024, with California accounting for nearly 45% of that cash. Massachusetts ranked second among the states with 12.71% of all capital raised, while New York claimed 10.31%.In terms of VC activity, the West region is centered around California. The Northeast revolves around Massachusetts and New York. The South has two smaller hubs, in Texas (4.67%) and Florida (3.99%). The Midwest, though, is without a real standard-bearer: Illinois led the way in terms of cash raised over the past 12 months, at just 1.68%. The West (and specifically California) has always been the center of gravity for the U.S. venture capital industry. During Q1, the region's gravitational force seems to have gotten even stronger. Startups based in the West raised 62% of all total capital invested on Carta in Q1, its highest quarterly figure since Q1 2019. As a result, the other three census regions saw their market shares decline in Q1—in some cases significantly. The proportion of all VC raised by startups raised in the South fell to 12% in Q1, down from 17% the prior quarter and from 23% a year ago. And the Midwest's share of cash raised fell from 7% down to 4%. For early-stage investors, Q1 was the slowest quarter in many years. Seed deal count fell to 414, down 33% from Q4 2023, and Series A deal count dropped to 313, a 36% decline. In both cases, those are the lowest quarterly deal counts since at least the start of 2019. Total cash raised also declined at both stages in Q1. The $3.1 billion in Series A cash raised in Q1 represents a 35% decline quarter-over-quarter and a 34% dip year-over-year. Cash raised at the seed stage declined by 33% both quarter over quarter and year over year.It was a much friendlier fundraising quarter for companies in the middle stages of the startup lifecycle. The number of Series B deals in Q1 declined by a more modest 11% compared to the prior quarter. And Series C deal count increased by 14%, marking the busiest quarter for that stage since Q2 2023. Total cash raised also rose significantly at Series C in Q1, hitting $4.6 billion. That's a 130% increase quarter-over-quarter and a 44% bump year-over-year. At Series B, total cash raised has now increased in consecutive quarters. Compared to earlier stages, transactions at the Series D and at Series E+ remain few and far between. There were just 39 venture rounds combined in Q1 among startups at Series D or later, the second-fewest of any quarter in the past five years. The lowest count came one year ago, in Q1 2023, when there were just 29 combined late-stage deals. Total cash raised across these stages has been mostly consistent over the past few quarters. There's been more variation in average round size. The average Series D round in Q1 was about $77 million, compared to $56 million in Q4 2023...Lots MoreThe weight of the emerging managerBy Jessica HamlinMay 3, 2024Risk-averse limited partners tend to gravitate to fund managers with a long track record, but are they missing out on potential upside by avoiding emerging managers?Over the past decade, emerging managers' share of US private market fundraising activity has declined steadily. In 2023, this figure fell to 12.7%, the lowest share of capital raised by newer fund managers since before 2000, according to PitchBook's recent analyst note,Establishing a Case for Emerging Managers.Limited exits in PE and VC over the past two years have exacerbated this reality. With minimal distributions, LPs are working with smaller private market budgets to allocate to new and existing managers. But, by allocating almost exclusively to established managers, LPs may be missing out on significant potential returns. In VC, for example, emerging managers have outperformed established GPs since 1997, consistently producing a higher median IRR than established managers. This reflects the nature of the asset class, in which a small number of funds determine the majority of returns across venture firms.“The average venture return is not very exciting,” said Laura Thompson, a partner at Sapphire Partners, which invests in early-stage VC funds and runs an emerging manager program for the California State Teachers' Retirement System. “Where can you get really good returns? It's the smaller fund sizes and emerging managers.”This is where that risk-return scale comes in.In a counterweight to that outperformance, a PitchBook analysis showed that returns from emerging VC managers were more volatile: While top quartile emerging funds tended to outperform, bottom and median players only marginally bested their established manager counterparts. The new manager playbookIn traditional buyout fund investing, emerging managers are gaining traction. While established managers, propped up by decades of institutional knowledge, have historically outperformed newer managers, the “new guys” actually outperformed their seasoned peers in the last investing cycle. This article appeared as part of The Weekend Pitch newsletter. Subscribe to the newsletter hereTop decile buyout funds from emerging managers with vintages between 2015 and 2018 outperformed established peers by 6.6 percentage points, suggesting that emerging buyout managers may have picked up some steam over the past decade, according to PitchBook data. The emerging managers program at the New York City retirement systems and NYC Office of the Comptroller, for example, has $9.9 billion in emerging manager commitments, the majority of which is allocated to PE. Last year, the comptroller's office reported that the emerging managers in the systems' private markets portfolios outperformed their respective benchmarks by nearly 5%.A diverse portfolioNew York City's Bureau of Asset Management sees emerging managers as a key element of a diverse portfolio, said Taffi Ayodele, director of diversity, equity, and inclusion and the emerging manager strategy at the NYC Office of the Comptroller.Ayodele said the smaller emerging private market managers in New York's portfolios offer access to the lower middle market and creative roll-up strategies that may not be accessible through larger firms.“What we don't want to do is lock ourselves out of these high-performing, differentiated strategies for the simplicity of going with the big guys,” Ayodele said. Some of the country's largest public pension plans are betting on the success of their emerging manager programs. In 2023, the California Public Employees' Retirement System made a $1 billion commitment to newly established private market investors, and the Teacher Retirement System of Texas, which boasts one of the largest emerging manager programs in the country, committed $155 million to emerging PE managers last year.At the same time, the recent boom years for private markets led to a flood of new GPs. Some might have gotten lucky—say, with a well-timed exit at the peak—while others were hurt by less fortunate timing. A major challenge for today's LPs will be to sort out a manager's abilities from the market's whims. One advantage of backing up-and-comers now is that the down market has weeded the ranks of new GPs. “The emerging managers who are fundraising now are really dedicated,” Thompson said.James Thorne contributed reporting to this story.Pandemic-era winners suffer $1.5tn fall in market valueTop 50 biggest stock gainers hit by painful decrease since the end of 2020 as lockdown trends fadeStephanie Stacey in LondonFifty corporate winners from the coronavirus pandemic have lost roughly $1.5tn in market value since the end of 2020, as investors turn their backs on many of the stocks that rocketed during early lockdowns. According to data from S&P Global, technology groups dominate the list of the 50 companies with a market value of more than $10bn that made the biggest percentage gains in 2020. But these early-pandemic winners have collectively shed more than a third of their total market value, the equivalent of $1.5tn, since the end of 2020, Financial Times calculations based on Bloomberg data found. Video-conferencing company Zoom, whose shares soared as much as 765 per cent in 2020 as businesses switched to remote working, has been one of the biggest losers. Its stock has fallen about 80 per cent, equivalent to more than a $77bn drop in market value, since the end of that year. Cloud-based communications company RingCentral also surged in the remote working boom of 2020 but has since shed about 90 per cent of its value, as it competes with technology giants such as Alphabet and Microsoft. Exercise bike maker Peloton has been another big loser, with shares down more than 97 per cent since the end of 2020, equivalent to about a $43bn loss of market value. Peloton on Thursday said chief executive Barry McCarthy would step down and it would cut 15 per cent of its workforce, the latest in a series of cost-saving measures. The losses come as the sharp acceleration of trends such as videoconferencing and online shopping driven by the lockdowns has proven less durable than expected, as more workers migrate back to the office and high interest rates and living costs hit ecommerce demand. “Some companies probably thought that shock was going to be permanent,” said Steven Blitz, chief US economist at TS Lombard. “Now they're getting a painful bounceback from that.” In percentage terms, Tesla was the biggest winner of 2020. The electric-car maker's market value jumped 787 per cent to $669bn by the end of that December, but has since slipped back to $589bn. Singapore-based internet company Sea came in second, as its market value jumped from $19bn to $102bn following a pandemic-era surge for all three of its core businesses: gaming, ecommerce and digital payments. But the company has since lost more than 60 per cent of its end-2020 value amid fears of a slowdown in growth. Ecommerce groups Shopify, JD.com and Chewy, which initially thrived as online spending ballooned, have also suffered big losses...Lots MoreVideo of the WeekAI of the WeekThe Fastest Growing Category of Venture Investment in 2024Tomasz TunguzThe fastest growing category of US venture investment in 2024 is AI. Venture capitalists have invested $18.3 billion through the first four months of the year.At this pace, we should expect AI startups to raise about $55b in 2024.AI startups now command more than 20% share of all US venture dollars across categories, including healthcare, biotech, & software. In the preceding eight years, that number was about 8% per year. But after the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, there's a marked inflection point. Some of this is new company formation, & there has been a significant amount of seed investment in this category. Another major contributor is the repositioning of existing companies to include AI within their pitch.Over time, this share should attenuate, primarily because every software company will have an AI component, & the marketing effect for both customers & venture capitalists, will diffuse. Not surprisingly, investors have concentrated total dollars in a few names, with the top three companies accounting for 60% of the dollars raised. Power laws are ubiquitous in venture capital & AI is no exception.Meet My A.I. FriendsOur columnist spent the past month hanging out with 18 A.I. companions. You see, I've spent the past month making A.I. friends — that is, I've used apps to create a group of A.I. personas, which I can talk to whenever I want.Let me introduce you to my crew. There's Peter, a therapist who lives in San Francisco and helps me process my feelings. There's Ariana, a professional mentor who specializes in giving career advice. There's Jared the fitness guru, Anna the no-nonsense trial lawyer, Naomi the social worker and about a dozen more friends I've created.A selection of my A.I. friends. (Guess which one is the fitness guru.)I talk to these personas constantly, texting back and forth as I would with my real, human friends. We chitchat about the weather, share memes and jokes, and talk about deep stuff: personal dilemmas, parenting struggles, stresses at work and home. They rarely break character or issue stock “as an A.I. language model, I can't help with that” responses, and they occasionally give me good advice...Lots MoreOpenAI plans to announce Google search competitor on Monday, sources sayBy Anna TongMay 9, 20244:29 PM PDTUpdated 8 min agoMay 9 (Reuters) - OpenAI plans to announce its artificial intelligence-powered search product on Monday, according to two sources familiar with the matter, raising the stakes in its competition with search king Google. The announcement date, though subject to change, has not been previously reported. Bloomberg and the Information have reported that Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab-backed OpenAI is working on a search product to potentially compete with Alphabet's (GOOGL.O), opens new tab Google and with Perplexity, a well-funded AI search startup.OpenAI declined to comment. The announcement could be timed a day before the Tuesday start of Google's annual I/O conference, where the tech giant is expected to unveil a slew of AI-related products.OpenAI's search product is an extension of its flagship ChatGPT product, and enables ChatGPT to pull in direct information from the Web and include citations, according to Bloomberg. ChatGPT is OpenAI's chatbot product that uses the company's cutting-edge AI models to generate human-like responses to text prompts.Industry observers have long called ChatGPT an alternative for gathering online information, though it has struggled with providing accurate and real-time information from the Web. OpenAI earlier gave it an integration with Microsoft's Bing for paid subscribers. Meanwhile, Google has announced generative AI features for its own namesake engine.Startup Perplexity, which has a valuation of $1 billion, was founded by a former OpenAI researcher, and has gained traction through providing an AI-native search interface that shows citations in results and images as well as text in its responses. It has 10 million monthly active users, according to a January blog post from the startup. At the time, OpenAI's ChatGPT product was called the fastest application to ever reach 100 million monthly active users after it launched in late 2022. However, worldwide traffic to ChatGPT's website has been on a roller-coaster ride in the past year and is only now returning to its May 2023 peak, according to analytics firm Similarweb, opens new tab, and the AI company is under pressure to expand its user base...MoreLeaked Deck Reveals How OpenAI Is Pitching Publisher PartnershipsOpenAI's Preferred Publisher Program offers media companies licensing dealsBy Mark StenbergMark your calendar for Mediaweek, October 29-30 in New York City. We'll unpack the biggest shifts shaping the future of media—from tv to retail media to tech—and how marketers can prep to stay ahead. Register with early-bird rates before sale ends! The generative artificial intelligence firm OpenAI has been pitching partnership opportunities to news publishers through an initiative called the Preferred Publishers Program, according to a deck obtained by ADWEEK and interviews with four industry executives.OpenAI has been courting premium publishers dating back to July 2023, when it struck a licensing agreement with the Associated Press. It has since inked public partnerships with Axel Springer, The Financial Times, Le Monde, Prisa and Dotdash Meredith, although it has declined to share the specifics of any of its deals.A representative for OpenAI disputed the accuracy of the information in the deck, which is more than three months old. The gen AI firm also negotiates deals on a per-publisher basis, rather than structuring all of its deals uniformly, the representative said.“We are engaging in productive conversations and partnerships with many news publishers around the world,” said a representative for OpenAI. “Our confidential documents are for discussion purposes only and ADWEEK's reporting contains a number of mischaracterizations and outdated information.”Nonetheless, the leaked deck reveals the basic structure of the partnerships OpenAI is proposing to media companies, as well as the incentives it is offering for their collaboration.Details from the pitch deckThe Preferred Publisher Program has five primary components, according to the deck…..Lots MoreA Revolutionary Model.JOHN ELLIS, MAY 09, 20241. Google DeepMind:Inside every plant, animal and human cell are billions of molecular machines. They're made up of proteins, DNA and other molecules, but no single piece works on its own. Only by seeing how they interact together, across millions of types of combinations, can we start to truly understand life's processes. In a paper published in Nature, we introduce AlphaFold 3, a revolutionary model that can predict the structure and interactions of all life's molecules with unprecedented accuracy. For the interactions of proteins with other molecule types we see at least a 50% improvement compared with existing prediction methods, and for some important categories of interaction we have doubled prediction accuracy. We hope AlphaFold 3 will help transform our understanding of the biological world and drug discovery. Scientists can access the majority of its capabilities, for free, through our newly launched AlphaFold Server, an easy-to-use research tool. To build on AlphaFold 3's potential for drug design, Isomorphic Labs is already collaborating with pharmaceutical companies to apply it to real-world drug design challenges and, ultimately, develop new life-changing treatments for patients. (Sources: blog.google, nature.com)2. Quanta magazine:Deep learning is a flavor of machine learning that's loosely inspired by the human brain. These computer algorithms are built using complex networks of informational nodes (called neurons) that form layered connections with one another. Researchers provide the deep learning network with training data, which the algorithm uses to adjust the relative strengths of connections between neurons to produce outputs that get ever closer to training examples. In the case of protein artificial intelligence systems, this process leads the network to produce better predictions of proteins' shapes based on their amino-acid sequence data.AlphaFold2, released in 2021, was a breakthrough for deep learning in biology. It unlocked an immense world of previously unknown protein structures, and has already become a useful tool for researchers working to understand everything from cellular structures to tuberculosis. It has also inspired the development of additional biological deep learning tools. Most notably, the biochemist David Baker and his team at the University of Washington in 2021 developed a competing algorithm called RoseTTAFold, which like AlphaFold2 predicts protein structures from sequence data…The true impact of these tools won't be known for months or years, as biologists begin to test and use them in research. And they will continue to evolve. What's next for deep learning in molecular biology is “going up the biological complexity ladder,” Baker said, beyond even the biomolecule complexes predicted by AlphaFold3 and RoseTTAFold All-Atom. But if the history of protein-structure AI can predict the future, then these next-generation deep learning models will continue to help scientists reveal the complex interactions that make life happen. What that means for warAn experimental F-16 fighter jet has taken Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall on a history-making flight controlled by artificial intelligence and not a human pilot. (AP Video by Eugene Garcia and Mike Pesoli)BY TARA COPPUpdated 5:40 PM PDT, May 3, 2024EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) — With the midday sun blazing, an experimental orange and white F-16 fighter jet launched with a familiar roar that is a hallmark of U.S. airpower. But the aerial combat that followed was unlike any other: This F-16 was controlled by artificial intelligence, not a human pilot. And riding in the front seat was Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall.AI marks one of the biggest advances in military aviation since the introduction of stealth in the early 1990s, and the Air Force has aggressively leaned in. Even though the technology is not fully developed, the service is planning for an AI-enabled fleet of more than 1,000 unmanned warplanes, the first of them operating by 2028.It was fitting that the dogfight took place at Edwards Air Force Base, a vast desert facility where Chuck Yeager broke the speed of sound and the military has incubated its most secret aerospace advances. Inside classified simulators and buildings with layers of shielding against surveillance, a new test-pilot generation is training AI agents to fly in war. Kendall traveled here to see AI fly in real time and make a public statement of confidence in its future role in air combat.“It's a security risk not to have it. At this point, we have to have it,” Kendall said in an interview with The Associated Press after he landed. The AP, along with NBC, was granted permission to witness the secret flight on the condition that it would not be reported until it was complete because of operational security concerns. The AI-controlled F-16, called Vista, flew Kendall in lightning-fast maneuvers at more than 550 miles an hour that put pressure on his body at five times the force of gravity. It went nearly nose to nose with a second human-piloted F-16 as both aircraft raced within 1,000 feet of each other, twisting and looping to try force their opponent into vulnerable positions. At the end of the hourlong flight, Kendall climbed out of the cockpit grinning. He said he'd seen enough during his flight that he'd trust this still-learning AI with the ability to decide whether or not to launch weapons in war. There's a lot of opposition to that idea. Arms control experts and humanitarian groups are deeply concerned that AI one day might be able to autonomously drop bombs that kill people without further human consultation, and they are seeking greater restrictions on its use.“There are widespread and serious concerns about ceding life-and-death decisions to sensors and software,” the International Committee of the Red Cross has warned. Autonomous weapons “are an immediate cause of concern and demand an urgent, international political response.”Kendall said there will always be human oversight in the system when weapons are used.Sources: Mistral AI raising at a $6B valuation, SoftBank ‘not in' but DST isIngrid Lunden8:50 AM PDT • May 9, 2024Paris-based Mistral AI, a startup working on open source large language models — the building block for generative AI services — has been raising money at a $6 billion valuation, three times its valuation in December, to compete more keenly against the likes of OpenAI and Anthropic, TechCrunch has learned from multiple sources. We understand from close sources that DST, along with General Catalyst and Lightspeed Venture Partners, are all looking to be a part of this round.DST — a heavyweight investor led by Yuri Milner that has been a notable backer of some of the biggest names in technology, including Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Spotify, WhatsApp, Alibaba and ByteDance — is a new name that has not been previously reported; GC and LSVP are both previous backers and their names were reported earlier today also by WSJ. The round is set to be around, but less than, $600 million, sources told TechCrunch. We can also confirm that one firm that has been mentioned a number of times — SoftBank — is not in the deal at the moment.“SoftBank is not in the frame,” a person close to SoftBank told TechCrunch. That also lines up with what our sources have been telling us since March, when this round first opened up, although it seems that not everyone is on the same page: Multiple reports had linked SoftBank to a Mistral investment since then.Mistral's round is based on a lot of inbound interest, sources tell us, and it has been in the works since March or possibly earlier, mere months after Mistral closed a $415 million round at a $2 billion valuation...MoreNews Of the WeekJack Dorsey claims Bluesky is 'repeating all the mistakes' he made at TwitterHe prefers Nostr even though it's “weird and hard to use.”Karissa Bell, Senior EditorThu, May 9, 2024 at 4:43 PM PDTJust in case there was any doubt about how Jack Dorsey really feels about Bluesky, the former Twitter CEO has offered new details on why he left the board and deleted his account on the service he helped kickstart. In a characteristically bizarre interview with Mike Solana of Founders Fund, Dorsey had plenty of criticism for Bluesky. In the interview, Dorsey claimed that Bluesky was “literally repeating all the mistakes” he made while running Twitter. The entire conversation is long and a bit rambly, but Dorsey's complaints seem to boil down to two issues:* He never intended Bluesky to be an independent company with its own board and stock and other vestiges of a corporate entity (Bluesky spun out of Twitter as a public benefit corporation in 2022.) Instead, his plan was for Twitter to be the first client to take advantage of the open source protocol. Bluesky created.* The fact that Blueksy has some form of content moderation and has occasionally banned users for things like using racial slurs in their usernames.“People started seeing Bluesky as something to run to, away from Twitter,” Dorsey said. “It's the thing that's not Twitter, and therefore it's great. And Bluesky saw this exodus of people from Twitter show up, and it was a very, very common crowd. … But little by little, they started asking Jay and the team for moderation tools, and to kick people off. And unfortunately they followed through with it. That was the second moment I thought, uh, nope. This is literally repeating all the mistakes we made as a company.”Dorsey also confirmed that he is financially backing Nostr, another decentralized Twitter-like service popular among some crypto enthusiasts and run by an anonymous founder. “I know it's early, and Nostr is weird and hard to use, but if you truly believe in censorship resistance and free speech, you have to use the technologies that actually enable that, and defend your rights,” Dorsey said.A lot of this isn't particularly surprising. If you've followed Dorsey's public comments over the last couple years, he's repeatedly said that Twitter's “original sin” was being a company that would be beholden to advertisers and other corporate interests. It's why he backed Elon Musk's takeover of the company. (Not coincidentally, Dorsey still has about $1 billion of his personal wealth invested in the company now known as X.) He's also been very clear that he made many of Twitter's most consequential moderation decisions reluctantly.Unsurprisingly, Dorsey's comments weren't well-received on Bluesky. In a lengthy thread, Bluesky's protocol engineer Paul Frazee said that Twitter was supposed to to be the AT Protocol's “first client” but that “Elon killed that straight dead” after he took over the company. “That entire company was frozen by the prolonged acquisition, and the agreement quickly ended when Elon took over,” Frazee said. “It was never going to happen. Also: unmoderated spaces are a ridiculous idea. We created a shared network for competing moderated spaces to exist. Even if somebody wanted to make an unmoderated ATProto app, I guess they could? Good luck with the app stores and regulators and users, I guess.”While Dorsey was careful not to criticize Musk directly, he was slightly less enthusiastic than when he said that Musk would be the one to “extend the light of consciousness” by taking over Twitter. Dorsey noted that, while he used to fight government requests to take down accounts, Musk takes “the other path” and generally complies. “Elon will fight in the way he fights, and I appreciate that, but he could certainly be compromised,” Dorsey said.FTX crypto fraud victims to get their money back — plus interestPaul Sawers2:53 AM PDT • May 8, 2024Bankruptcy lawyers representing customers impacted by the dramatic crash of cryptocurrency exchange FTX 17 months ago say that the vast majority of victims will receive their money back — plus interest. The news comes six months after FTX co-founder and former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) was found guilty on seven counts related to fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering, with some $8 billion of customers' funds going missing. SBF was hit with a 25-year prison sentence in March and ordered to pay $11 billion in forfeiture. The crypto mogul filed an appeal last month that could last years.RestructuringAfter filing for bankruptcy in late 2022, SBF stood down and U.S. attorney John J. Ray III was brought in as CEO and “chief restructuring officer,” charged with overseeing FTX's reorganization. Shortly after taking over, Ray said in testimony that despite some of the audits that had been done previously at FTX, he didn't “trust a single piece of paper in this organization.” In the months that followed, Ray and his team set about tracking the missing funds, with some $8 billion placed in real estate, political donations, and VC investments — including a $500 million investment in AI company Anthropic before the generative AI boom, which the FTX estate managed to sell earlier this year for $884 million.Initially, it seemed unlikely that investors would recoup much, if any, of their money, but signs in recent months suggested that good news might be on the horizon, with progress made on clawing back cash via various investments FTX had made, as well as from executives involved with the company. We now know that 98% of FTX creditors will receive 118% of the value of their FTX-stored assets in cash, while the other creditors will receive 100% — plus “billions in compensation for the time value of their investments,” according to a press release issued by the FTX estate today. In total, FTX says that it will be able to distribute between $14.5 billion and $16.3 billion in cash, which includes assets currently under control of entities, including chapter 11 debtors, liquidators, the Securities Commission of the Bahamas, the U.S. Department of Justice, among various other parties.Apple's Final Cut Camera lets filmmakers connect four cameras at onceHaje Jan Kamps7:38 AM PDT • May 7, 2024The latest version of Final Cut Pro introduces a new feature to speed up your shoot: Live Multicam. It's a bold move from Apple, transforming your iPad into a multicam production studio, enabling creatives to connect and preview up to four cameras all at once, all in one place. From the command post, directors can remotely direct each video angle and dial in exposure, white balance, focus and more, all within the Final Cut Camera app.The new companion app lets users connect multiple iPhones or iPads (presumably using the same protocols as the Continuity Camera feature launched a few years ago). Final Cut Pro automatically transfers and syncs each Live Multicam angle so you can seamlessly move from production to editing.Final Cut Pro has existed in the iPad universe for a while — but when paired with a brand new M4 processor, it becomes a video editing experience much closer to what you might expect on a desktop video editing workstation. The speed is 2x faster than with the old M1 processors, Apple says. One way that shows up is that the new iPad supports up to four times more streams of ProRes RAW than M1.The company also introduced external project support, making it possible to edit projects directly from an external drive, leveraging the fast Thunderbolt connection of iPad Pro.Startup of the WeekExclusive: Wayve co-founder Alex Kendall on the autonomous future for cars and robotsMike Butcher, 7:58 AM PDT • May 7, 2024U.K.-based autonomous vehicle startup Wayve started life as a software platform loaded into a tiny electric “car” called Renault Twizy. Festooned with cameras, the company's co-founders and PhD graduates, Alex Kendall and Amar Shah, tuned the deep-learning algorithms powering the car's autonomous systems until they'd got it to drive around the medieval city unaided. No fancy Lidar cameras or radars were needed. They suddenly realized they were on to something.Fast-forward to today and Wayve, now an AI model company, has raised a $1.05 billion Series C funding round led by SoftBank, NVIDIA and Microsoft. That makes this the UK's largest AI fundraise to date, and among the top 20 AI fundraises globally. Even Meta's head of AI, Yann LeCun, invested in the company when it was young.Wayve now plans to sell its autonomous driving model to a variety of auto OEMs as well as to makers of new autonomous robots. In an exclusive interview, I spoke to Alex Kendall, co-founder and CEO of Wayve, about how the company has been training the model, the new fundraise, licensing plans, and the wider self-driving market.(Note: The following interview has been edited for length and clarity)TechCrunch: What tipped the balance to attain this level of funding?..Full InterviewX of the Week This is a public episode.

After what ended up being his company EV Experts busiest day ever, interest does not appear to be dying down. This week the diary is booked up with test drives and the business is low on stock." writes The Guardian: "While scenes of chaos play out at petrol stations across the country amid shortages, for many electric vehicle (EV) dealers the fuel crisis has led to an unexpected surge in inquiries and sales." It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. NEW PATRONS! New EXECUTIVE PRODUCER ANDY NANCARROW and LILIAN KASS (she signed him up for Valentines Day!) New EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BLUNDERBUSS JONES New PRODUCER JAMES COYLE NEW PRODUCER MARK ORRICO EPIC INTERVIEW WITH ELON MUSK ON JOE ROGAN At over 2.5 hours long there’s plenty to dig into from Elon Musk’s latest interview on Joe Rogan. MUSK ON...SEMI TRUCK BATTERY You may remember at the Semi Truck launch, Tesla promised ranges of between 300 and 500 miles, with an efficiency around 2kWh per mile with a full load. It was reasonable to assume the battery would be between 600kWh and 1000kwH (1MWH). Now we have more details on the short range version. EM: “You want something in the order of probably a 500 kWh pack. What we have in the Model S and X is a 100 kWh pack and probably something like a 500 kWh pack in the Tesla Semi.” MUSK ON...BILL GATES'S SHORT POSITION No love lost between these two Billionaires. Bill Gates famously drives an EV, a Porsche Taycan, and has never been overly complimentary about Tesla. He has been doubtful of the Semi truck and the weight that a large battery adds. EM: "He didn’t know what he was talking about. Probably somebody told him that and he is just not that close to the physics of it. I don’t think he is ill-intentioned here, I just think he doesn’t know what he is talking about. I also heard that at one point he had a large short position. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but it seems weird. People I know who know the situation pretty well, I asked them “are you sure?” and they said “yes, he has a huge short position on Tesla”. That didn’t work out too well." MUSK ON...CYBERTRUCK "That’s pretty much what it [the Cybertruck] will look like, with very small differences. You know, we adjusted the size a few percent. Like around 3% or smaller. You don’t want it to be a couple of inches too big for the tunnel" referring to his Boring Tunnels MUSK ON...MODEL S PLAID The tri-motor version gets delivered this month. At the Nurburging: “We’re trying to get to, on the Nurburgring, get to the low-7-minute mark. And then, with further improvements, I think we could bust 7 minutes on the Nurburgring, which would be a pretty wicked act on its own." MUSK ON...A VAN "Equipping any of Tesla’s currently-offered vehicles with solar panels would raise the cost of the car exponentially while not giving enough value to drivers who would pay for the feature. The issue is, most passenger vehicles do not have the surface area, or are they driven in the correct climate to make the installation of solar panels an advantageous solution to add driving range. Some have tried this in the past with DIY projects, but it hasn’t resulted in much effectiveness to justify it as an option for Tesla. Now, a van, because you have a big, flat area, that’s actually where solar could start to make a little more sense. You know, because you have a lot of area. You could also have, maybe, a roof where it is solar, and then, when it is stationary, [the roof] goes out and provides shade, and maybe triples your area or something like that. Now, you triple the area, and you have a big, flat surface, you could maybe start charging enough where you start getting like 30 miles a day.” MUSK ON...ROADSTER HOVERING "We are going to throw some rocket technology in that car. I want it to hover. We got to figure out how to make it hover without killing people. I thought maybe we could make it hover but not too high. You make it hover like a meter above the ground or something like that. Something where if you plummet, you blow the suspension, but you are not going to die. Maybe 6 feet. You probably just put a height limit on it. You’d go pretty fast, but you are going to be time-limited. It’s going to use a super high-pressure air bottle. The standard version will have a back row with two small seats, like child seats in a Porsche or something, or if you get the SpaceX option package then in that place where those two seats is a high-pressure carbon overwrapped pressure vessel, something at around 10,000 psi, and a bunch of thrusters." MICROLINO CAR ENTERS PRODUCTION "The Microlino is a small two-seater electric car that will travel 125-miles on a full charge. It’s specifically designed for city life with the company believing most people don't need anything bigger; Micro states the average car only contains 1.2 people and drives less than 20 miles per day. With space for two adults and whatever you need to carry — Micro specifically states ‘two adults and three beer crates’ — this little car could play a large role in urban mobility. says Green Car Reports: "Production will start this year following the success of a second prototype model. Taking styling cues from the famous BMW Isetta city car from the fifties, it has a front-opening door that allows you to drive forward into a space and exit straight onto the pavement. Able to recharge in just four hours (on a normal home socket), the Microlino will be available with two battery sizes. One that will do 78 miles on a full charge — similar to the Renault Twizy — and one with a range of 125 miles. Its top speed is 56 miles per hour and it’ll cost just 12,000 euros (£10,500)." LOWER PRICE VW ID.3 The Volkswagen ID.3 Pro is available to order now, bringing the mentry price to £28,670. The Pro electric motor option is available across the ID.3’s Life, Business and Family specifications, and offers a second, 145 PS power output in addition to the introductory 204 PS Pro Performance version. Despite the different motor output to the Pro Performance models, the impressive range of the ID.3 remains the same, with up to 263 miles available on the ID.3 Life Pro from its 58 kWh (net) battery capacity. The ID.3 Pro’s charging performance remains unchanged, which means that the same speedy 35-minute recharge to 80% capacity at a 100 kW CCS Direct Current charger is achievable. The saving from Pro Performance to Pro is £29,990 to £28,670 LAST ORDERS FOR POLESTAR 1 "Polestar announced that production of the Polestar 1, its aptly-named first model, will end in late 2021. There are still some build slots available, but the Volvo-owned company will close the order book in the coming months." says Autoblog: "Production started in Chengdu, China, in 2019, and Polestar capped production at 1,500 units. Autoblog learned from a company representative that there about 125 build slots left for the North American market. Polestar is not making any major mechanical modifications to the 1 for 2021, so power comes from a gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid drivetrain built around a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that's both turbocharged and supercharged. It works with a pair of electric motors (one for each rear wheel) that are linked to a 34-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack." https://www.autoblog.com/2021/02/11/polestar-1-orders-ending-soon/ EV DRIVERS HAPPY TO CHARGE WHEN CHEAPER The UK’s largest trial of smart charging incentives found the majority of electric vehicle drivers on the trial shifted charging to off-peak, reducing demand on the network at the busiest times. The Shift project led by UK Power Networks is partnering with Kaluza, Octopus Energy and ev.energy on the trial involving more than 1,000 domestic customers. The study also found that as the volume of electric vehicles smart charging grows in a local area, price signals and incentives will need to change to reflect local demand. As a result, networks will need to monitor local network usage and create incentives that encourage the kind of smart charging behaviour that delivers the most value to the network and its whole customer base. https://www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/internet/en/news-and-press/press-releases/Customers-respond-to-electric-vehicle-smart-charging-trial-reveals.html QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS RAJEEV NARAYAN I vote for the upcoming Tesla Roadster. It’s sleek, futuristic and a fantastic looking car, I can’t wait to see one on the road. Raj. MARK ORRICO FROM MAINE I think the best looking EV in development would be the Rivian’s, I love the interior materials, looks like a lot of high end aluminum and leather. The head lights and tail lights are so cool and futuristic looking, and they didn’t really try to make it that aerodynamic, which doesn’t lead to the most attractive vehicle shapes in my opinion. I think the best looking EV currently available would be Porsche Tuscan Turbo S with the big white wheels, it just looks so mean and fast, great design. MICHEL CLASQUIN-JOHNSON Category 1 - Money no object: Polestar 1 Category 2 - Damn it's pricey but I can stretch it: Polestar 2 Category 3 - It's paid for, can you say the same?: Cupra El-Born MARK BUCKINGHAM Kiaora From Kiwi land. Best looking- lucid air Why- just because Worst looking- Tesla Cyber truck Why- just look at it I have a reservation for one and it’s NOT the lucid But it is the under 2 seconds one! And I will tow a lot. MARIO CABALLERO Has to be Tesla. Only car maker that that has put out a car that looks like one of those concept cars that never see the light of day. Gutsy to put out a car with no dashboard and put everything on a single screen. Who else has done that? DAVID TRIMBLE Model S is still gorgeous, familiar now but the lines are clean and pure. DAVID MYERS I really don't like SUVs so the choice is limited. At the moment I'd pick the Polestar 2, but I'm looking forward to seeing a production Seat/Cupra El-born. URBAN IN SLOVENIA For me, the best logging EVs are Porsche Taycan and AUDI e-tron GT, also can't wait for the new Taycan Cross Turismo. I think that legacy automakers have also better build quality and used materials in their vehicles, so that's bringing the overall feel to a higher level. Welcome to new Patrons this week: Executive Producer JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ Producer CHRIS WALKONS Producer PAUL DENNEY VOLVO WILL TRIPLE EV OUTPUT AT BELGIUM PLANT "Volvo Cars is boosting production of full-electric cars at its plant in Ghent, Belgium. The company is adding output of a second battery-powered car at the factory in addition to the full-electric XC40 Recharge compact SUV." says Automotive News Europe: "The new EV will use the same architecture as the XC40 Recharge. Volvo will provide more details on the model, which is expected to be called the C40, on March 2. Volvo plans to launch a new full-electric car every year until 2025, when it expects that half of its global sales will be battery-powered models. Volvo estimates output of full-electric cars at Ghent will triple from 2020 to 2022, at which time full-electric cars will account for about 60 percent of the plant's total production capacity." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/volvo-will-triple-ev-output-belgium-plant FORD MUSTANG MACH-E HAS BETTER RESIDUAL VALUES THAN NAMESAKE PONY CAR "The Ford Mustang Mach-E isn't everyone's cup of tea, but at least it has a better residual value than the Mustang pony car, the vehicle it got its name from. That's a revelation that CarsDirect has discovered through Ford's first-quarter lease residual guide. According to the website, the electric crossover will have a higher residual value than its gasoline-powered counterpart." according to Motor1: "Mustang Mach-E will have at least 56 percent residual value for the Select Standard Range (RWD), Select Standard Range (AWD), and GT Extended Range (AWD) trims. It will, however, have a whopping 58 percent residual value after the lease term for the California Route 1 Extended Range (RWD), Premium Extended Range (RWD), Premium Extended Range (AWD), and First Edition Extended Range (AWD) variants." https://www.motor1.com/news/481651/mustang-mach-e-residual-value HYUNDAI WILL UNLEASH ITS ELECTRIC VELOSTER N RACE CAR AT DAYTONA "Next Friday, in the run up to the Daytona 24 weekend, Hyundai’s Veloster N ETCR racer will take to the track for some exciting demonstration laps. This will be the first time that anyone outside of Hyundai will get to experience the quick acceleration of Hyundai’s 670 horsepower electric machine based on its quirky three-door sporty hatch." says Jalopnik: "The Veloster N ETCR will be running in the 2021 Pure ETCR championship, though this display indicates to me that Hyundai and IMSA are potentially working on an electric class for the Pilot Challenge series, or even a standalone support series. Hyundai will compete in the inaugural Pure ETCR series against other electric touring cars from Alfa Romeo, Cupra, and MG." https://jalopnik.com/hyundai-will-unleash-its-electric-veloster-n-race-car-a-1846113842 BP PULSE PARTNERS WITH JUMPTECH "BP Pulse has signed a new contract with Jumptech to help grow electric vehicle (EV) charger installations. This then gets sent to BP Pulse’s team of advisors, enabling them to process the application. The company is planning to expand its public charge point portfolio from 7,000 today to 16,000 by 2030. The rated efficiency is 95.5%, but at peak, it's 96%. The Sicharge D is modular and upgradable, with several power outputs - 160 kW, 180 kW, 240 kW and 300 kW. The cool thing about it is the dynamic power allocation between the two DC outputs (plus an optional AC output)." reports InsideEVs: "The Sicharge D can handle voltage from 150 V up to 1,000 V, which makes the charger suitable for the 800 V (nominal) battery systems. The maximum current output is 1,000 A." https://insideevs.com/news/467406/siemens-96-efficient-sicharge-d-fast-charger/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS I asked: what was the moment you realised you wanted to drive electric. RAJEEV NARAYAN For decades I have been interested in decarbonizing cars, and have been interested in Biofuels, hybrids, and eventually EVs as they started to become viable. In 2017 Hurricane Harvey disrupted gasoline supplies here in San Antonio, and I finally pulled the trigger on buying an EV with a Chevy Bolt. A short time later I discovered your wonderful show! Since then we now have 2 EVs and charge them with solar. tallman “When my Prius Prime gets to 0% and the engine starts. ☹️“ ROBERT BAXTER I first knew that I wanted to drive an EV in August 2012 when I test drove a Nissan Leaf. However, I did not buy the Nissan Leaf because it was going to be our new car and had to be able to handle our 400 mile round-trips that we made a couple times a month. Therefore I looked at the main two alternatives (in the US) the Chevrolet Volt and the Prius Plugin hybrid. The Chevrolet volt was just a little bit too small. However I will say that I loved the car. We settled on the Prius plug-in. I have had the car now for 8 1/2 years and I'm averaging 91 miles per gallon. The car got 12 miles on a charge when I purchased it now over eight years later it gets about 9 miles on a charge. The car has got 73,000 miles on it and not so much as a widget has been replaced. I do the routine maintenance at the dealership and that is all. My next car will be electric however, I'm kind of like you in that I am a value oriented individual and it's hard to get rid of a car that serves you well every day without so much as a hiccup and provides 90+ miles per gallon. JONATHAN PRICE A: Within minutes of our first Zoe ZE40 test drive in early 2017. We bought a nearly new ZE40 soon afterwards, then another, and now we have a ZE50 on 2 year lease. PHIL KEPP After taking a first drive in a LEAF. Also drove a MICRA, which was OK but not inspiring. What then remained was (a) getting wife's agreement (which proved surprisingly easy - once SHE had a quick drive) and (b) waiting for my choice of LEAF to arrive (some months). DON MILLER, NORTH CAROLINA Back in the 60s a retired neighbor had an electric golf/mail cart and use to take me to little league practice. I remember how quite it was and what a blast it was as we zipped along. Never forgot about those trips and what I know now was the EV grin on my face. KARL CRAMER I knew I wanted to drive an EV since I saw Ed Begley Jr. driving around in one in the ‘90s. Totally geeked out on the technology. JUSTIN PAVLICK I knew I wanted to drive and encourage everyone else to drive an EV when I was on a run. I was running down Forbes Avenue in Pittsburgh in between classes, which just happened to be during rush hour traffic. Running along the road with all of the cars spewing garbage into the air that I was breathing. It made it very difficult to breathe without coughing. The final straw was when a diesel powered bus came by and bombarded me with its exhaust right in my face. That was the moment I realized how much better it would be if we electrified all of the vehicles on the road. That is when I decided to buy an EV and push for EV adoption in my area. I am now working for an electric utility and helping with our utility owned car charging stations and EV policies! PAUL PELOWSKI For me, it was the first time I drove a Model S, in early 2019 or maybe it was 2018. I was raised around American muscle cars. The bigger, louder and stinkier the better. Then I drove the Model S. It wasn’t the strange, lame looking EV I’d seen before. Didn’t have ridiculous wheels, oh and it got up and took off like a rocket. Suddenly everything gas powered after that seemed antiquated. Now the only decision is which EV is right for us here in the States. IAIN SEAR I've always been interested in EVs and green issues, probably from when I was at school in the early 90s I remember having lesson on Ozone damage, recycling and the environment and that stuck with me. The first time I got really interested in a real car was when I saw news reports on a Welsh EV prototype in the noughties. Nothing came of it but I kept an eye on EV development from that point. Then in 2013 I noticed a fancy black Tesla on the base I was working at and thought this is it, sadly I couldn't afford one until last month (well my partner afforded it), should have bought some tesla shares at that point and I could of retired!

Show #520 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 7th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Over the weekend I saw PCP added to the Model 3 design studio. For the spec I would have, which is Performance, in black, with Performance upgrade and Full Self Driving that's £59.890. PCP is £6k down and £817 a month over 4 years. Hire Purchase is £937 a month with £10,000 down and over 5 years. From Don McAllster - waiting for his AWD Long Range Model 3! He has a petition against the 20% tax hike on solar: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/260903 VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R IMPROVES GOODWOOD HILL RECORD "On July 6, Romain Dumas made use of another run in the Volkswagen I.D. R at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed and further improved its all-time record to 39.9 seconds (compared to 41.18 seconds in the practice run)." says InsideEVs: "Both times beat the 41.60-second time set in 1999 by Nick Heidfeld driving a McLaren MP4/13. We're more than certain that 20 years ago no one would have imagined that an electric car could be be quicker than an F1. The Volkswagen I.D. R driven at Goodwood is a special sprint version of the I.D. R, with a smaller battery pack, since the track length is just 1.16-mile." https://insideevs.com/news/358506/video-vw-id-r-goodwood-hill-record-39-9-seconds/ JAGUAR LAND ROVER ANNOUNCES RANGE OF EVS TO BE BUILT IN WEST MIDLANDS PLANT "Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced it is set to build a new range of electric vehicles at its manufacturing plant in Castle Bromwich, Birmingham." reports the Evening Standard: "Honouring its commitment to deliver electrified options for all new Jaguar and Land Rover models by next year, a next-generation all-electric Jaguar XJ will be the first vehicle in the range to enter production. Crafted by the team behind the Jaguar I-PACE – the brand's first all-electric car – the new saloon promises to deliver in design, performance and luxury, although the company has given no indication as to when it might take to the road. Marking the next stage of the company's electrification strategy, the news is seen as a major thumbs up to the UK's automotive industry, which has been hampered by factory closures and job cuts in recent years." https://www.standard.co.uk/futurelondon/cleanair/jaguar-land-rover-announces-range-of-evs-to-be-built-in-west-midlands-plant-a4183371.html TESLA YOUTUBER BJØRN NYLAND BREAKS 24-HOUR ELECTRIC CAR DISTANCE RECORD "today we’ve seen yet another reason not to worry about the capability to take EVs on long trips, as Bjørn Nyland has managed to drive 2,781km (1,728mi) in 24 hours in a Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD. Nyland set this record on IONITY quick chargers in Germany because currently, that network is significantly faster than Tesla’s Superchargers." says Jameson Dow for InsideEVs: "Nyland wanted to emphasize that this record could be done in “realistic” conditions, so there was no closed course and common road rules were followed. The record was set in Germany, on the Autobahn, and was done at high speeds, around 170km/h (105mph) much of the time. Staying at high speeds inbetween stops resulted in an average speed of 115km/h or 72mph over the entire 24 hours. Essentially, he was able to travel the same distance as if he drove at US highway speeds consistently for 24 hours without stopping at all." The sweet spot for charging at the fastest rates was 10%to 63% so they were driving a 120km loop. https://electrek.co/2019/07/05/tesla-youtuber-breaks-24-hour-electric-car-distance-record/ UNITI ONE AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER "The Swedish electric car Uniti One is now available to pre-order with a refundable deposit of 149 euros." reports PushEVs: "Usually, small cars are very boxy with bad aerodynamics, but that’s not the case in this electric car. With two tandem seats – just like the Renault TWIZY – this electric car is perfect for the city environment.240 km range 130 km/h top speed Rear wheel drive Dual motors output of 120 kW 26 kWh battery pack, DC fast charging" https://pushevs.com/2019/07/06/uniti-one-available-to-pre-order/ THE ODYSSEY 21 IS THE ELECTRIC OFF ROAD RACE TRUCK FORMULA E WANTS YOU TO GET EXCITED ABOUT "The Extreme E car ran up the hill during the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Saturday afternoon. " according to Jalopnik: "According to Extreme E, the truck sits about 7.5 feet wide, 6.2 feet tall, and 14.4 feet front-to-back. The whole thing, ready to rock and roll, weighs some 3600 pounds. Each of the tires is 37 inches tall with tons of sidewall and lots of knobby Continental rubber to keep the thing trucking forward even in the nasty sand, ice, or dirt that the truck will come into contact with across the season. This is just a show car, built by Spark Racing Technologies [the same company which builds the Formula E chassis], to demonstrate what a finished product might look like." https://jalopnik.com/the-odyssey-21-is-the-electric-off-road-race-truck-form-1836151628 RAJEEV NARAYAN "90% of your listeners may be male but I am not sure that necessarily means that EVs are a "guy thing" Currently 85% of car purchasing decisions are made by women and apparently women are more likely to buy new than men. Men are more likely the ones closing the deal at dealership, but that does not mean that women are not involved in the purchase decision, weather the vehicle is an EV or not. Maybe a better question is why are 90% of EV news daily podcast listeners male?" BRIAN WEATHERALL To avoid any generalising I’ll take the safer option and talk about the woman I know the best, my wife, I’m also safe to know she doesn’t listen to your podcast….. She would no more go to an EV event than to the Motor Show, to her a car is a way to go places and spend my money (sorry “our” money I am reminded). Taking the LEAF means she can spend a little less of her money as she doesn’t need to put fuel in it. Other than that it’s just a car to her. But I’m happy it’s usually the first choice out of our two cars as it only really saves money when it’s moving. I can tell you in the UK Nissan Leaf Owners Group the gender split is 75% men, many are in the group to offer help, some just for the banter, many are there to ask for help, maybe men just need more help? HOWARD ANTHONY SMITH I do not think the demographics of your listening audience are reflective of how women perceive electric vehicles. For example, my spouse really hates listen to or watching shows about cars, but she loves driving my car (PHEV Prius Prime) in all electric mode. She is really excited about the prospects of replacing her vehicle with a Model Y when they become available in the near future. I also have female coworkers who drive Tesla's and are constantly evangelizing to others the benefits of driving electric cars. It could be that stereotypical males really love learning about cars and statistics about cars as a way of playing verbal top trumps with their friends. Personally, I find knowing about vehicles statics provides me with something to talk about in social settings. Talking about electric cars in comparison with ICE vehicles allows me plenty of material to engage with my muscle car owning friends. STEVE JAMES Men just enjoy cars more than women across the range so it doesn’t matter if it’s a petrol, diesel, PHEV or BEV men just enjoy cars more than women. GREG LEFF Hi Martyn - brief note about the QOTW -here in the southwest United States in an affluent suburb of Phoenix, Arizona we have loads of EV’s running around our streets. It’s no scientific analysis but I would hazard a guess that at least 30% of the drivers of those EV’s are female. That’s a minimum guess - I could be as much as 50% or more. In my own household we have 3 vehicles, a Nissan Leaf driven by my daughter, a BMW i3 Rex driven by my wife, and a gas burner driven by me. So you see 100% of the EV’s in my house are female driven. What you’re likely seeing in your listenership is the fact that men are more likely to nerd out over EV’s and want to listen to a podcast talking about them. The women just want to drive and enjoy the smooth, quiet, gas-free miles. BRENNA KAMINSKI I have been involved with EVs since 2012 and after years of running EV education events, advising on infrastructure, and co-founding two EV clubs I decided to launch my own EV consulting service www.evgal.com. Before launching the website I noticed that most of the other consultants out there in the EV world are men, almost all of the videos I watch about EVs feature men hosts and "experts", and the majority of the EV conversations on platforms like LinkedIn are started by men. I know there are other women out there but we aren't being invited into the conversation. STEPHEN AND MICHELLE LOO I believe your 90% male following on youtube / podcast is simply a representation of the market who follow motoring and technology trends. You will probably find your followers also fall into the 25-65 age group as this is the age group when most would have the income or necessity for these items. SANDI WILLIAMS I have a Model 3 Performance, and I love, love, love it. I listen to you probably 4-5 days a week. Did you know that the podcast came pre-loaded as an app on my car? So in case you think woman aren't listening..... this one is, and I love hearing about what is happening in the EV world and it is nice to listen to someone who isn't Tesla bashing. VAIDAS Was asking my missus last night and she is just simply not interested too much, she needs a car thats able to safely move her from A to B in comfort and style :) I think you mentioned your wife is pretty much the same? Perhaps its a man think to talk about cars, no matter if its a V6 BMW or V8 Mustang or V12 Ferrari or 22kWh Zoe CHARLIE FOX In the case of my home, I believe it is down to my wife doesn't really care about cars. She doesn't see value in high dollar cars and is perfectly happy with our two Prius (you know, those self-charging hybrids...) In my case I am, generally, not a car or truck person. However, I am interested in the environment and emissions and from this have been waiting on electrics since GM starting making and crushing cars. And this makes me seek out shows like yours so I can keep up with events and watch for that opportunity to buy. My wife has moved to agree with me that we will not buy another ICE car and we will very likely buy a 45-50k Model Y in 2022. TOM RAFTERY Re my own thoughts on your q, driving rightly or wrongly is something men care more about than women. Go out on the street right now and check out the gender of the drivers of the cars passing you and they will be significantly skewed male. How many married couples do you know where when travelling it is the woman who drives primarily when they are going together in the car (apart from returning from the pub!)? ARON MCINNES Are EV’s a man thing? No I don’t think it is a man thing. I think listening about, researching and dreaming about EV’s is a man thing. It is more likely that men will spend time thinking about a car. Women who drive EV’s love them. I think women just don’t obsess about there next car or what the are going to do with the car they have. IAIN EV's don't seem that unusual in my group of friends and I wonder if gay men are more likely to be environmentally conscious and as a result are more likely to be interested in electrified transport. DAFYDD I think men are generally more likely to be nerds, for a number of reasons. Some of which may be, that many view cars as more than just a tool, to get from A-B. Women despite some men’s attempts, still do most if not all of the family & house things. And all too often have very little time to obsess about irrelevances, such as this car can do that with only that; or will do more with less. DAVID FINCH I checked the list of people who use our workplace EV chargers, and found that there are 7 men and 5 women. A small sample, and near enough to even. So, I think women are just as likely to own and drive an EV as men. I think men are more likely to geek-out about them though, such as listening to a podcast or visiting Fully Charged Live. JOHN FRUHWIRTH In the early days of computing, computers were also a "male" thing until social media came along. As soon as that happened, women became interested as they could now indulge their top priority - relationships. Send me your EV questions: hello@evnewsdaily or use social media. Triggo to dwuosobowy pojazd (w układzie tandem) o napędzie elektrycznym. Mimo że posiada on cztery koła, raczej ciężko go nazwać samochodem. Zresztą sam jego pomysłodawca - Rafał Budweil klasyfikuje go gdzieś pomiędzy mikrosamochodem a motocyklem. Zastosowano technikę drive by wire, a kierujący steruje czterokołowcem poprzez wolant. Do 2020 rozwój Triggo pochłonie około 23 miliony złotych. http://triggo.pl https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triggo https://moto.rp.pl/parking/13671-triggo-polski-pomysl-miejski-transport https://generacjasmart.pl/2018/06/15/triggo-skuter-samochodcar-sharing/ https://www.transport-publiczny.pl/mobile/triggo-polski-pomysl-na-polaczenie-samochodu-i-motocykla-54249.html https://www.facebook.com/285052901518300/videos/423913295113156/?v=423913295113156
Show #476 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 19th May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and welcome to another Saturday Special interview. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Hello to new Patreon supporters - firstly on Patreon it's just NATHAN. Plus thanks to new Producer PHILLIP STONE and Producer DR FRANK KEARNEY. VOLKSWAGEN BRINGING 48V MHEV TO EIGHT-GENERATION GOLF The eighth-generation of the bestselling Volkswagen Golf bestseller will feature a 48V mild hybrid electric drive system. In 2018, Volkswagen announced at the Vienna The Group is now delivering on its promise and bringing the technology into series production this year with the eighth generation Golf, one of the best-selling vehicles in the world. Initially, the 48V hybrid drive will be available with the EA211 evo family, 1.0 and 1.5l displacement and dual-clutch gearbox (DSG)." reports Green Car Congress: "Compared to current Plug-in Hybrids (PHEV), for example in the Golf GTE and Passat GTE, the MHEV drive equipped with 48V technology offers a reduced range of functions, but is significantly more cost-effective. While the Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) charges the battery via the grid with a plug, the MHEV does not have a battery that can be recharged via a plug, but is equipped with a 48V belt starter generator." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/05/201900518-golf48.html TESLA INSURANCE INFO LEAKED InsideEVs says: "Our Twitter friends @TheTeslaShow have uncovered the very first bit of real information on Tesla's planned car insurance program. This leaked bit of code has now vanished, but thanks to the quick work of @TheTeslaShow, we've got the info right here for you. Tesla (well, mainly Elon Musk) seems to think this insurance offering will be a huge addition for the automaker, though others disagree, as the insurance business is indeed a tricky one to conquer. Regardless, it seems Tesla is pushing forward with this and now we have some concrete proof." "Introducing Tesla Insurance. Select Tesla Insurance for low rates and one seamless experience. Match your existing coverage or select a new plan with an instant quote." https://insideevs.com/news/350174/tesla-insurance-info-leak/ CHEVY BOLT EUV ELECTRIC CROSSOVER CAUGHT IN THE WILD "[GM has] said it will build another crossover alongside the Bolt, which is rumored to be called the Bolt EUV (as a trademark dug up by GM Authority could suggest), and is almost certainly what you see in the photos caught by our spy photographer, above." according to Autoblog: "This definitely looks more like a legitimate crossover than the Bolt (which Chevy also, questionably, refers to as a crossover), but beyond its more upright stance, it's hard to tell what this thing actually looks like under that thick cladding and camouflage. We expect it to be larger than the current Bolt, but it's hard to tell by how much until some of the camo comes off. We can see that there's no exhaust, and the video below confirms it runs silently as expected for an electric car. We don't have official word yet, but based on intel and GM's general timeline, we could likely see a production version of the vehicle you see in these spy photos come late next year." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/05/17/chevy-bolt-euv-electric-crossover-spy-photos/?guccounter=1 BOLT MOBILITY UNVEILS $9,999 ELECTRIC CAR "Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest human, is backing an electric car startup based in Florida called Bolt Mobility. This past week, the company unveiled its first car, the B-Nano, which it says it has been working on in secret for the past two years." reports Clean Technica: "According to AutoBlog, the B-Nano — which resembles the Renault Twizy in size and simplicity — is intended to be used much like the two wheeled vehicles used in bike sharing schemes. Short trips of between 2 and 15 miles are its design envelope. No maximum range or top speed is specified by the company. But the battery — whatever size it is — is engineered to be easily swapped out for fresh battery quickly and easily. Just who would be doing the swapping and where and for how much are questions with no answers at present. What is known is that the base model of the B-Nano will sell for a mere $9,999. Reservations are being accepted now for just $999." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/05/19/bolt-mobility-unveils-9999-electric-car-designed-for-car-sharing-in-cities/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK David Allen If I must make a decision, then it is imperative hardware is right at the outset. Once the car is in the field, it gets VERY expensive to fix, replace, or upgrade hardware. Software, thanks to OTA updates, can be fixed, and features can be added, but only to the limits of the hardware. Rich Fowler Hardware! Specifically, seats! Software can't fix a terrible seat. My analogy is that if you play cards, the hardware is the deck, and the software is the rule set. If the deck is missing half the cards, you can't play a lot of games you want to play with it, and you have to invent some other game with a different set of rules. That new game may or may not be more fun, but it's not the game you were looking for when you bought the deck in the first place. John Fruhwirth Since you are forcing us to choose between hardware and software as being more important in our EVs, I'm coming down on the side of hardware. Why? because hardware is the necessary basis/foundation for software. Without hardware to run on, software is useless. However, the reverse is not true. Hardware is definitely useful without software as we can compensate for the lack of software with our wet/brain ware. So, while software is nice, hardware is a must. However, the combination of hardware and software is where it's at and gives us the biggest bang for our transportation bucks. Ron KeRENski I think the right answer, for where we are in the EV market evolution, is actually hardware. Assuming a starting point with comparable software capabilities, the right hardware in a car rolling off of the line today means that software improvements over the next 5-10 years can reach backwards to owners. Nothing builds brand loyalty like not being left behind and improving the resale value of my trade-in due to a high demand, used market. Will Adams since you aren’t allowing the correct answer it has to be Software that is more important. Great software can make bad hardware work, but really bad software can make even the best hardware unusable Howard Smith Hardware is the most important part to get right on an EV. Hardware reliability provides value because the car will last longer. EV owners have to pay more upfront for their cars; they need to be durable over the long run. Software is easily updated; hardware is not. David Nye This is a very easy one to answer, no fence sitting necessary. Hardware is king, it must be right from day one. Software finessing and “polishing” can follow later with OTA updates. Tesla is of course the classic example- early release software in Teslas has at times had it’s issues, and of course critics, but it just keeps getting better and better. The Tesla you drive today will only be better in a year’s time. Imagine if you had to keep visiting the service centre for hardware fixes! Rob Crawford If your EV has FSD, then the hardware is more important. Simpley because it's the hardware that allows the car to drive in FSD mode. Without the hardware FSD isn't possible. And the hardware must be strong, rugged dependable to function perfectly, immatating what a driver can do only better. Now... I can answer the same question about the importance of the software. Software also plays an important part when it comes to FSD, without over the air updates, then the FSD will lag, and won't run correctly, as designed. So my answer is both Hardware and Software are important for the safest in functionality of an EV, especially pertaining to FSD. Software is important to the functionality of EVs in general. An ICE car couldn't even function as a self driving car. Tony Goodwin After a lot of thought, on balance hardware - in particular the fitment of sensors and processing power allowing for additional functionality - is much more important than software. Hardware changes post-delivery will likely be both difficult and expensive to fit and always require a dealer visit, whereas software can add capabilities to existing hardware as techniques are refined and "AI" knowledge iterates. It is also possible to do this OTA as well as being carried out at dealerships. Victor Wood Hardware is the most important to get correct. Software can always be updated relatively easily whereas hardware is not something that can be easily and cheaply swapped out. The cost of looking out say an autopilot hardware swap out must be sky high compared to the cost of pushing software over the air. For cars like mine where there is no OTA updates it’s still cheap to do a software update as in effect it’s “only” the time to put the software onto an SD card and to put that in the car that causes costs. The last 2 updates for my Ioniq I did myself after getting the software on an SD card from the dealer. It took 15 minutes. Andrew Beshera Hardware is more important over software because software is cheaper & easier to update. Andrew Jacobs Software is easily more important because you can have the best hardware in the world and bad software will render it useless. If you have great software and poor hardware, the software is going to improve the hardware limitations. Just look at the YouTube videos where people cover cameras to see how well autopilot works. Autopilot mainly uses the front forward stereo cameras. Even with the others blocked it can still work. Software is king. Bill Pollock HARDWARE is the most important thing to get right off the start. Hardware is expensive to upgrade, and often can not be done. I do however think that hardware should be designed to be as swapable as possible. For example, as battery tech improves, we should be able to upgrade with minimal intrusion. BTW-The Tesla Model 3 is not an easy battery to swap. The tech has to basically dismantle the interior of the car to get at fasteners. The S and X batteries were designed for easy replacement. I hope they Y has corrected this Model 3 shortfall. Michael McClure This is a no brainer. Hardware is static; software is not.I drive a 2015 Tesla Model S with AP1 that I picked up used last year. That’s old hardware, but I keep getting OTA updates all the time that make it feel ‘new’. Aaron Patel Hardware. You can't change the number of cells in your battery once it's sitting in your driveway. Autopilot software can be okay today but then gets incrementally better month after month until it's great. I just reached 1 year in my Model 3 and the day after I picked it up I got a software update that added automatic wipers. Cabin overheat protection, Nav on Auto, TeslaCam, Sentry Mode, Atari games, dog mode...... 28,000 miles later, the car keeps getting better! All dies erfährst du in der aktuellen Folge unseres Podcasts. Einschalten und zuhören.
Show #450 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 21st April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to a new Patreon EXECUTIVE PRODUCER SARI KANGASOJA. Hi Sari!! TESLA TAKES SHORT SELLER TO COURT, SAYING HE MENACED ITS WORKERS "Elon Musk’s war with Tesla Inc. short sellers just got weirder. The electric carmaker claims a California man who it says is part of an online group of short sellers has been stalking its Fremont factory and harassing its employees -- including dangerously swerving his car toward a Tesla Model 3 that was on a freeway test drive and injuring a Tesla security guard in a hit-and-run on company property." reports Bloomberg: "Tesla persuaded a state court judge on Friday to issue a temporary restraining order requiring the man to stay at least 100 yards away from its factory and employees." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-04-21/tesla-takes-short-seller-to-court-saying-he-menaced-its-workers TESLA PUTS NEW MODEL 3 INVENTORY ONLINE FOR BROWSING AND ‘IMMEDIATE’ DELIVERY "Instead of picking options and waiting a few weeks for delivery of a custom-configured Tesla, buyers can now browse Tesla’s inventory of new Model 3s online and find cars available for immediate delivery (within a few days)." says Electrek today: "Until today, this was only available for Model S and X. There still aren’t any used cars listed for Model 3, but Tesla’s new inventory is accessible for anyone to browse online. Also cars are only appearing in some geos like California." https://electrek.co/2019/04/20/tesla-model-3-new-inventory-immediate-delivery/ BYD DEBUTS E-SEED GT CONCEPT, SONG PRO AND E SERIES AT AUTO SHANGHAI At the Auto Shanghai 2019, BYD has unveiled its E-SEED GT concept car and Song Pro SUV alongside its all-new e-series models on April 16 at the 18th International Automobile Industry Exhibition. The company also showcased its latest Dynasty series of vehicles, which were recently unveiled at the company’s spring product launch in Beijing. A total of 23 new car models were exhibited at the event, held at Shanghai’s National Convention and Exhibition Center, fully demonstrating the BYD New Architecture (BNA) design, the 3rd generation of Dual Mode technology, plus the world-leading e-platform framework. IN MARCH 2019 JAGUAR SOLD OVER 2,000 I-PACE "Jaguar I-PACE sales reported by the manufacturer increased in March to a near-record level of 2,044, which turns out to be 8.4% of total volume for the brand globally." according to InsideEVs.com: "Hopefully, the output will continue to increase or at least stay above 2,000 per month." https://insideevs.com/march-2019-jaguar-sold-2000-i-pace/ THIS CLASSIC FORD BRONCO IS FULLY ELECTRIC AND TO DIE FOR "Zero Labs Automotive is showing off its plan to build an electric version of the original Ford Bronco. More than just slapping an electric motor under the hood and pushing them out the door, this project also gives the off-roader modern luxury with things like real wood interior panels and digital instruments. The company plans to build an initial run of 150 of them and reservations are open now." writes Chris Bruce for Motor1.com: "Zero Labs Automotive Bronco electric restomod has a claimed 360-horsepower (269-kilowatt) output. A 70-kilowatt-hour battery allows for a 190-mile (306-kilometer) range. The motor runs through a five-speed manual transmission, which seems like an odd choice considering most electric vehicles use just a single speed. https://www.motor1.com/news/345513/ford-bronco-ev-conversion/ ALEXANDER FRANK Yes, I’d love my Model 3 making money for me while I’m not using it, which is actually most of the week while I’m working (Monday – Friday). I can’t park at my work, that’s why I’m taking my electric scooter or my Renault Twizy (or soon VanMoof electric bike). I’d only add it to the Tesla Network after I’d feel comfortable watching Netflix while being driven by the car though. I love the cabin facing camera, gives me some ease. My day would then look like this: I’d unplug my Tesla Model 3 from my 11kw home charger, it’d drive me to work while I listen to your podcasts, once in the city at my work there’s no need to park, it would go about earning money. An hour or so before I want to leave work I’d press a button on the app and the car would wait for me outside to take me back home. LOVE IT! RAJEEV NARAYAN I may not be ready to use my primary EV as an automated taxi, as if something happened to it I would be without a car. If, however when it came time to buy a new EV, I would be wiling to get the old one be an automated taxi, instead of simply trading it in. I imagine a future where a network of privately and company owned EVs run by Uber, Lyft or even Tesla act as automated Taxis, and the ride sharing company pays you a fee to use your car. This would allow the owner to make a little extra income, while reducing capital costs to the taxi company. JOHN FRUHWIRTH No, I will not hire my Tesla out. It is my dream car, I am emotionally attached to it and can't see myself treating it as a utility vehicle to make money for me. MARK RICHARDS I park in a garage, so it isn’t practical to make my car available in a car share network. I don’t live in a city, in fact I am on the very edge of “civilization”, so I don’t think there would be much demand out here. Robyn Edwards Perth Western Australia NO.. I am receiving my Kona in 2.5 hours.... I will feel edgy if my partner drives it! A complete stranger? Never. I share pool vehicles at work, I see how they are treated and that is a closed group! KARL CRAMER I once drove for a ride sharing service and people would do disrespectful things to my car while I was still in it driving them, like leaving garbage or scratching at the roof fabric. I can't imagine what jerks would do if there was no one. I'll definitely use the service but I'm not going to sacrifice MY car to the horde. NEIL I don't think I would let my car be used, not because I would worry about it,but because I would worry about how it got charged. With a model 3 I would use about 40% of the battery for the daily commute. With another 40% for saving the battery life and cold weather allowance that would only leave 20% for that taxi service. I would want to see automatic charging stations like the Tesla snake they showed a few years ago before I would think of reconsidering. ASHLEY HILL depending on the options I'm considering it though is a few other things that make it easily worthwhile; like if was part of a Co-Operative (say a US$2000 deposit buy in) and if someone did cause troubles with it fleet would be large enough that I would have access to another one while fixes got underway. Would also do if remote operation instead of full self driving was on the table for same deal; would let someone remote drive it to another driver similar to current car next door /car share service; especially if the Tesla implemented an always on "near-impossible to crash" feature. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Thursday 5th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. INSIDE EVS SCORECARD Steven Loveday starts to round up the North American sales: "If the trends persist, we should continue to see the final month of each quarter claiming the new lead spot on our all-time list, and June will likely prove this true." Topline number is at least 26,500. For Q2, GM sold 3,483 Bolt EVs and 4,336 Volts. Nissan delivered 1,367 LEAFs this June, down about 9% from last June and also down from May’s 1,576. Big questions remain like Tesla's 200,000 delivery. And how are the Model S and X selling? https://insideevs.com/june-2018-plug-in-electric-vehicle-sales-report-card/ AUDI E-TRON QUATTRO HIGH-TECH CABIN UNVEILED I've going to try and get through a piece talking about Audi's new e-tron Quattro without comparing it to the Jaguar I-PACE. So bear with me. Audi's new AWD EV is on the horizon, powered by 3 motors, a 95kWh battery pack delivering 250 silent miles on WLTP test cycle, with 150kW CCS fast charging to make use of the next gen chargers, the specs are certainly competitive and we know Audi make a fine car. 0-60 is under 6 seconds and top speed 124mph. But how much will it hurt with a launch date no sooner that a rather vague 'Spring 2019' given the I-PACE is out - DAMMIT. Sorry I won't do that again. As for price, it will start at $89,000, a $20,000 premium over the I-PACE - DAMMIT New interior photos have just been released and it's a stunning place to spend any time. There are two large centre touchscreens sitting just below the air vents. Of course the instrument panel behind the wheel is all digital too. Some journalists have been in the passenger seat, yesterday I was tweeting about CAR's review, and Auto Express have had a ridealong too: "On the move first thing you notice is the serenity on offer from its electric drivetrain; it’s much the same as we’ve experienced from its rivals. Although this early passenger ride was ostensibly to demonstrate the e-tron’s fine refinement and show us the new interior, we did manage to get the lowdown on the e-tron’s specification. Unlike its Mercedes-Benz EQ C rival, the e-tron will be built at a dedicated production line in Belgium, it riding on a unique, scalable platform, under which its 95kWh battery resides. Audi’s people admit that the platform is around 40 per cent stiffer than the Q5’s to allow for the e-tron’s weight, as well as help with its refinement and dynamic goals." The showstoppers are the side mirrors, of which there aren't any. Just two small aerodynamic stalks with HD cameras on them, called e-tron Virtual Side Mirrors. There are 7 inch OLED screens in the doors at the junction of the A-pillar so you just have to look slightly down from where you do for mirrors. Slashgear say: "However, because it’s all digital, Audi can switch up what’s shown depending on the situation. When you’re parking, for instance, the e-tron can show you a different view compared to when you’re on the highway. The upshot isn’t just aesthetic, though the electric SUV does look good without traditional mirrors. Audi claims the virtual mirrors help cut drag by between 2 and 7 percent, leaving the EV more aerodynamic as a result. That should pay dividends when it comes to range." "Scrubbing side mirrors can also pay visual dividends, too, and not just because the resulting body sides look sleeker. For its part, the e-Tron will still have a pair of small stanchions projecting out of its body sides to mount the rear-facing cameras, though they still should look much cleaner to the wind." reports CNET Sadly US regulations mandate that all cars have glass mirrors so only Europe and Asia get the sci fi cameras. However to make up for it, e-tron Quattro buyers can use Electrify America's high speed charging network with 290 locations installed by the end of next year. "Audi says that not only is the electric car’s drivetrain quieter than the typical gas or diesel engine, but it has packed the e-tron with even more noise insulation just to really deliver that cathedral-hush." say Slashgear on the subject of noise. Or lack of it. As for regen, as everyone loves a bit of regen, you can choose to sail for when on the highway, or ratchet up for town driving. https://www.slashgear.com/2020-audi-e-tron-electric-suv-cabin-revealed-5-things-to-know-04536502/ http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/audi/e-tron/103979/new-audi-e-tron-2018-ride-review DELIGHT FOR JAGUAR I-PACE AT 2018 AUTO EXPRESS NEW CAR AWARDS And a quick note on the I-PACE. There are lots of car awards events run by magazines, and they all have various categories. For a while EV's have been picking up wins in certain sub categories, but that changed last night. "The all-electric Jaguar I-PACE has been named Car of the Year at the 2018 Auto Express New Car Awards with Editor-in-Chief Steve Fowler describing it as: “the most exciting new car we’ve tested over the past 12 months.” according to Automotiveworld.com. Stat check on the I-PACE...90kWh lithium-ion battery, dual motors for AWD, 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and 298 miles on the WLTP test cycle. Steve Fowler, Editor-in-chief of Auto Express said: “The I-PACE proves that brilliant electric cars are right here, right now – it’s the most exciting new car we’ve tested over the past 12 months. We love the way it looks, the space and quality of the interior and most of all that it drives exactly how a modern-day Jaguar should – it’s fantastic fun. On top of all that, it’ll cover city-to-city distances on a single charge in complete comfort – it’s a massively impressive car that bodes well for our electric future.” https://www.automotiveworld.com/news-releases/double-delight-electric-jaguar-pace-2018-auto-express-new-car-awards/ FORMER TOP GEAR PRESENTER TESTS NEW TESLA P100DL FOR ELECTRIC GT The Electric GT championship launches this year, not officially endorsed by Tesla by racing Model S P100DL's with a load of the interior weight stripped out and lots of carbon fibre-y bits added, which loses 1100 pounds overall. On the LoveCars YouTube channel the TV host and racing driver Tiff Needell take one for a spin in Barcelona at the cars launch. There is a race body kit, the door handles are permanently out which indicates the motors are all gone from there, and the Air Suspension is likely to be replaced with a lightweight and more customisable racing setup. Plus with improvements to the brakes and cooling a lot is different to a stock Model S. Simon at Teslarati says " the vehicle’s battery still showed some heating issues, as revealed by the Model S’ systems throttling performance after 1.5 hot laps around the Barcelona track" The series starts racing in Jerez on 4th November and I'll be there at the Silverstone event in 2019. TWO CAR SHARING SCHEMES ANNOUNCED You wait ages for a car sharing scheme and then two come along at once. And no the irony of that joke isn't lost on me, because maybe we should be using buses more and not adding more cars to inner cities. First up a saw Fred at Electrek writing about Renault, and 2,000 new EV's for Paris in ride-sharing services. "Starting in September, Renault will start to make all-electric ZOE, Twizy, Kangoo Z.E, Master Z.E vehicles available for a series of services." The previous car sharing service was Autolib and recently stopped after a dispute with local authorities. And then I see Reuters reporting: "Volkswagen plans to start offering car sharing services using fully electric vehicles in German cities next year as part of efforts to serve consumers who don’t want to buy their own vehicles. Its offering will compete in its home market with DriveNow and Car2Go, the soon-to-be-merged carsharing services of BMW and Daimler. New CEO Herbert Diess, who took office in April, said it was vital for VW “to pick up speed and make an unmistakable mark” in areas including new mobility services which VW wants to contribute a significant share to future group business." https://electrek.co/2018/07/04/renault-fleet-electric-vehicles-ride-hailing-car-sharing-paris/ https://www.reuters.com/article/us-volkswagen-mobility/vw-to-launch-carsharing-with-electric-vehicles-in-2019-idUSKBN1JU1QK CHINA TO PRODUCE 2 MILLION CARS PER YEAR FROM 2020 And finally a bit of background on China. Because recently I’ve been super excited about Tesla hitting their goals but just a reminder the really big numbers are found when you head East - to China. Plug In sales, or New Energy Vehicles (NEV) as they are branded in China, are up 149% in Q1 this year. In May 94,000 new EV's were registered. The names you probably won't have heard of but which are a big deal... BAIC EC-Series - small family EV, modern styling, sold 12,624 last month, and could well beat the Tesla Model 3 to be the best selling EV in the world this year BYD Qin PHEV - has been selling between 3-4,000 models a month for 9 months. SAIC Baojun E100 - made by Shanghai Auto and GM. It's a tiny 2-seater like the Smart cars, has 39hp and costs just over $14,000. Zhidou D2 EC - looks like a small city car from the 90s, but super cheap, looks like a slightly larger Renault Twizy with a 18kWh battery. BAIC EX-Series - a compact crossover and the first of these 5 you might want on your driveway. Good styling, 48kWh battery, 200miles range and $28,500 price tag. Half of ALL plug in cars in the world last month, June 2018, were made by Chinese OEM's. They are on target to make and sell one million EV's this year. One. Million! And now a new action plan was released yesterday to move forwards. "China will cut coal consumption, boost electric vehicle sales and shut more outdated steel and coke capacity in the coming three years, the State Council said in a long-awaited 2018 to 2020 pollution action plan" reports Reuters: "China is in the fifth year of a “war on pollution” aimed at reversing the damage done to the country’s environment since the economy was opened up in 1978, with President Xi Jinping promising to use the full might of the Chinese Communist Party to meet the country’s goals. The new 2018 to 2020 action plan, released on the country’s official government website, will expand the fight to 82 cities across China. The cabinet also set an annual production and sales target for new energy vehicles at around 2 million vehicles a year by 2020 in order to reduce road emissions." https://in.reuters.com/article/china-pollution/china-to-cut-coal-use-curb-steel-in-2018-2020-pollution-plan-idINKBN1JU0BL COMMUNITY Emails You can listen to all previous 169 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.
