When I was a child, I was repulsed by my father's smoking addiction. I can still smell the acrid scent of his clothes, laden with a residual stench that never quite went away. He used to carry an old handkerchief in his front shirt pocket. Even at a young age, I thought it was odd when he would blow his nose into it and then stuff it back. I found it even more disgusting when he would spit on it and then subsequently wipe my face with the same putrid handkerchief. I felt a sense of betrayal enter my body whenever he would do this. Maybe he thought of me as some sort of sick puppy, like how a dog licks the fur of it's young as an act of compassion. Perhaps his dad did the same thing to him too? I guess I'll never know. Around the age of six or seven, I asked my father if he would quit smoking. He replied, “I will quit when you turn nine.” Can you guess what happened when my ninth birthday came around? This cycle of broken promises continued for the next few years until he and my mother divorced when I was 14. That same year he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. When I was 16, I visited him at my grandmother's house. I opened the front door and locked eyes with him. He was ecstatic to tell me a story about where he had recently traveled. I was confused because he wasn't allowed to go anywhere unsupervised by this point. “Son... I have to take you to this place! We... we were traveling in a helicopter to this beautiful remote island. There were all types of dinosaurs there. From brontosaurus to pterodactyl... I even saw a T-Rex!!!” It was such an absurd thing to say; it took me a while to process what he was telling me. “Dad... are you talking about Jurassic Park??”  “You've been there already!” he replied with a sense of disappointment on his face. After this instance, I rarely visited him. My mother had custody over me, so I watched him from afar as he slowly began to deteriorate. It was a confusing emotional time for me back then. Looking back now, I know I distanced myself as a defense mechanism. I was ashamed of what my father was going through. While other fathers seemed to be present in their children's lives, mine was dwindling away, becoming a fragment of his former self. I didn't understand what he was going through then. How could I have? I remember a few family members telling me I would regret not visiting him more before he passed away. But to be honest, I don't regret distancing myself. After his death, I learned about my father's checkered past. I'm still processing the things I found out about him—how he was a gambler, a womanizer, and a failed businessman. He lived his life in ways I disagree with. In many ways, I have tried to be the exact opposite of him. The photos you see here were taken for several reasons. First, I find the graphics on these cigarette packages to be disturbing, hilarious, and problematic at the same time. The disclaimers are, for lack of a better term, utter bullshit. The cigarette companies don't care about the health of the people who purchase them. But I guess that's a symptom of living in a society that values predatory capitalism. Finally, these photos are for you, Dad. May you rest in peace. I'll see you in the next life so we can reconcile our differences. Hopefully. _ Yoshino is a multi-hyphenate artist and the host of Artist Decoded.  Yoshino's essay “Cancer Sticks” can be read at Yoshino's Diary on Substack. In the 1st of two episodes, visual artist, writer, entrepreneur and host of the Artist Decoded podcast, Yoshino talks about: how he shortened his name to the iconic ‘Yoshino,' thanks to an existential crisis involving leaving the commercial and fashion photography world for the fine art world; doing Brazilian Ju jitsu, Muay Thai, and boxing on a professional level; how he identifies himself, and what being an ‘artist' means in his case, how as an artist you want to be fluid, which runs counter to capitalist realities; growing up Christian, and his current spiritual place (a spiritually open-minded individual who doesn't have any answers (!)); his move to Joshua Tree, partially due to the spiritual wokeness of LA, and his desire to process information outside of the noisy machinations of Los Angeles.

No question about it; a lot of terrible things have happened this year. And Yeah, we could just say 2020 was shit. But was it all that way? Or did it make you have to look at and try connecting with yourself and others a little harder, a little longer, and maybe a little more honestly? Sure. We can say the chaos of 2020 has muddied everything and that we’re just trudging through, or we could say it made certain things a lot more clear. Or we could go with both. It’s probably both.On that note, I was energized and inspired by this conversation in this episode, learning more about our guest, and I can’t wait for you to hear it. He is someone who encourages me to think, and who is endlessly curious. This week I share with you a chat that I was fortunate enough to have had with Yoshino, a visual artist, photographer, and podcaster extraordinaire among other things.I was originally introduced and then re-introduced to Yoshino by an amazing mutual friend of ours, and he graciously let me pick his brain about podcasting early on in my journey with “You Care Too Much.” Somehow we ended up on the topic of empathy and I couldn’t not have him on the show after that.Yoshino hosts the Artist Decoded podcast, which he has been doing for the past five years now. He started it as an exploration of self, as an artist, and explores the inner workings, perspectives, vulnerabilities, and everything in between with other artists and experts - digging into the who and why of some of the most creative folks around. Yoshino is also co-founder of the Los Angeles-based arts collective, NOH/WAVE, which includes an online academy of workshops taught by an arsenal of talented artists. It’s very cool. One of my favorite things about Yoshino, Artist Decoded, and really all that he does is the element of human connection that seems to permeate throughout. It was at the beginning of last week’s episode that I was expressing how much more important connection feels right now, though it’s always been important… And Yoshino gives us insight into his perspective on authenticity, intentionality, and a mindset of honesty when it comes to both ourselves and others; all key ingredients for meaningful connection.Key Talking Points of the Episode:Meet YoshinoBeing present versus phoning it in Having intention for the things that you doEmpathy and masculine dualityArtistic viabilityHuman connection & vulnerabilityInfluences on Yoshino’s lifeKey Milestones of the Episode:[04:30] Meet Yoshino[05:10] Being present vs. phoning it in[9:00] From second-hand values to personal intuition[11:00] Being intentional & Deliberate[14:40] Digging into Artist Decoded[16:19] Effective communication [17:00] Multiple truths & empathy[19:50] Being a lover and a fighter [21:45] Artistic viability as a way of life[27:00] Being a life-long learner[29:18] Dedication[36:00] Yoshino’s mindset; balance, honesty, discipline [39:00] Vulnerability, authenticity, and perspective[44:30] Openness and human connection[51:20] People who have left a lasting impact on Yoshino[56:00] Discussion and healthy relationships[59:500] Something Yoshino is interested in trying[01:05:30] Organizations Yoshino supports Standout Quotes from the Episode:“I think that the more that I started listening to second-hand values of other people, and people’s projections of their internal mental structures on me, that’s when I think I stopped listening to my gut.”“I’m very deliberate about my pursuit of knowledge.”“I find that my happiest times are when I’m able to learn, you know, and whether that’s learn from people or learn from a book.”“I think a lot of times we’re conditioned to chase results, and the journey is actually more important.”“I feel like mindset is about discipline, honesty, balance, and being able to communicate that effectively to people that you love and so on and so forth.”“You’ll learn a lot about humanity by just sitting there and sharing that space.”“What is my contribution to this planet? In this episode of Radio Amenti, Yoshino and I share a conversation on the origins of our friendship, synchronicity, the Tao, Flow Consciousness, Ayahuasca, Bufo + Kambo (what's the difference?), MK Ultra celebrity glitches (Shaq and Al Roker WTF), life, love, relationships, laughter and genuine connection. We originally recorded this back in October 2019 at his studio in Los Angeles, Noh Wave, back when I first launched Radio Amenti, but the release of this conversation comes at a perfect (and somewhat divine) time. It begins with laughter, it ends with laughter, such is the case with many conversations I have had with this wonderful human being! About Yoshino: Yoshino is a visual artist and podcast host based in Los Angeles, California. Having worked for years as a professional fashion photographer, his interests eventually shifted towards experimental fine art photography and mixed media collaborations. In 2015, he created the Artist Decoded Podcast in an effort to dive deeper into the world of contemporary art. The podcast seeks to demystify the artistic process by providing an unabridged documentation of conversations with professional artists, and creatives. Yoshino started, Artist Decoded, as a way to connect with fellow artistic peers, and to share their stories with people around the world. Artist Decoded is ranked among the top 100 visual arts podcasts of all-time. In 2017, Yoshino co-founded NOH/WAVE, a multi-media art collective, and production company based in Los Angeles. Since its inception in 2017, NOH/WAVE is continually breaking barriers within the contemporary art world and is one of the only artist operated galleries in Los Angeles. Among his creative entrepreneurial endeavors, Yoshino is also a skilled MMA fighter who trains heavily in a range of martial arts and wields tremendous discipline to his craft.
