MLB – La Russa steps down as White Sox manager over health issues Tony La Russa stepped down as manager of the Chicago White Sox because of a pair of health issues. The announcement ends a disappointing two-year run in the same spot where the Hall of Famer got his first job as a big league skipper. La Russa is a three-time World Series champion who turns 78 on Tuesday. He left the team on Aug. 30 because of issues with a pacemaker that was implanted in February. La Russa says a different, previously diagnosed health problem led to his departure. La Russa directed Chicago to the AL Central title last year, but the team fell short of expectations this season. He needed assistance to leave the field, an arm draped over manager Scott Servais and an athletic trainer. Haggerty is scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday. Andrew Chafin struck out Carlos Santana for his third save. Seattle will open a best-of-three series at Toronto or Cleveland on Friday. White Sox 3, Twins 2 – Cueto helps White Sox beat Twins after La Russa steps down The Chicago White Sox watched manager Tony La Russa announce he was leaving his position, and then beat the Minnesota Twins 3-2 behind Johnny Cueto’s seven effective innings. The Reds are 61-99 this season. They snapped a six-game skid and can avoid losing at least 100 games for the second time in franchise history if they sweep the three-game series against Chicago. Cincinnati finished 61-101 in 1982. Greene and relievers Derek Law, Buck Farmer and Alexis Diaz combined on a two-hitter to stop the Cubs’ winning streak at seven games. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Detroit Tigers 4, Seattle Mariners 3 Chicago White Sox 3, Minnesota Twins 2 Cincinnati Reds 3, Chicago Cubs 1 Tigers 4, Mariners 3 – Mariners to start playoffs on road after 4-3 loss to Tigers The Seattle Mariners will start their first playoff trip in two decades on the road after a costly 4-3 loss to the Detroit Tigers, who got a two-run homer from Javier Báez. Sam Haggerty singled with two outs in the ninth inning and hurt his left groin while sliding into second base on a successful steal. La Russa stepped down because of a pair of health issues, punctuating a disappointing season for the Hall of Famer in the same spot where he got his first job as a big league skipper. Josh Harrison hit a two-run homer in Chicago’s fourth win in five games. Minnesota dropped to 9-19 in its last 28 games. Gio Urshela hit a two-run homer, and Bailey Ober pitched five innings of two-hit ball. Reds 3, Cubs 1 – Reds avoid 100th loss, beat Cubs 3-1 behind Hunter Greene Hunter Greene pitched six scoreless innings and the Cincinnati Reds remained at 99 losses, beating the Chicago Cubs 3-1. Chicago only got one runner past second base before scoring in the ninth against Diaz, who picked up his 10th save. Tonight Detroit (Rodriguez 5-5) at Seattle (Gonzales 10-15), 6:10 p.m. – Game 1       WSJM/WCSY 5:50 Detroit (TBD) at Seattle (Flexen 8-9), 9:40 p.m. – Game 2                              WSJM/WCSY Chicago Cubs (Assad 2-2) at Cincinnati (Cessa 4-4), 6:40 p.m. Minnesota (Winder 4-5) at Chicago White Sox (Giolito 10-9), 8:10 p.m. NFL – National Football League – Week 4 Last Night San Francisco 49ers 24, Los Angeles Rams 9 49ers 24, Rams 9 – 49ers use defense, Deebo Samuel to beat Rams 24-9 Deebo Samuel turned a short catch into an electric 57-yard touchdown, Talanoa Hufanga returned an interception for a score and the San Francisco 49ers beat the Los Angeles Rams 24-9. Jeff Wilson Jr. also scored on a 32-yard run that gave the Niners their seventh straight regular-season win over their in-state rivals. The Rams won the matchup that meant most in last season’s NFC championship game on the way to a Super Bowl title, but this meeting looked more like their recent regular-season meetings. San Francisco used a relentless defense to slow down coach Sean McVay’s offense and got enough big plays for the win. NHL – National Hockey League – Preseason Last Night Pittsburgh Penguins 3, Detroit Red Wings 2 NBA – National Basketball Association – Preseason Tonight Detroit Pistons at New York Knicks, 7:00 p.m. New Orleans Pelicans at Chicago Bulls, 9:30 p.m. WNBA – Russian court sets Brittney Griner appeal date for Oct. 25 A Russian court has set a date for American basketball star Brittney Griner’s appeal against her nine-year prison sentence for drug possession. It has been scheduled for Oct. 25. Griner is an eight-time all-star center with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and a two-time Olympic gold medalist. She was convicted Aug. 4 after police said they found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport. The Moscow region court said Monday it will hear her appeal. Griner’s lawyers argued after the conviction that the punishment was excessive. NWSL – Abuse in women’s pro soccer league was systemic, report says An independent investigation into the scandals that erupted in the National Women’s Soccer League found emotional abuse and sexual misconduct were systemic in the sport, impacting multiple teams, coaches and players. U.S. Soccer commissioned the investigation by former acting U.S. Attorney General Sally Yates and a law firm after former NWSL players Sinead Farrelly and Mana Shim came forward with allegations of harassment and sexual coercion dating back a decade. But it was clear the problems were widespread. Five of the 10 head coaches in the league last season either were fired or stepped down amid allegations of misconduct. Running – Man, 36, dies after running in London Marathon Organizers of the London Marathon say a 36-year-old man died after running in the race on Sunday. London Marathon Events says the man collapsed between miles 23 and 24 of the race. He received immediate medical treatment and an ambulance arrived within three minutes. He died in a hospital in London. The organizers expressed their “sincere condolences” to the man’s friends and family. The cause of death has yet to be established. Fishing – Authorities probing report of scandal at fishing tournament Prosecutors in Cleveland are investigating an apparent cheating scandal during a lucrative walleye fishing tournament over the weekend on Lake Erie. A Twitter video shows Jason Fischer, tournament director for the Lake Erie Walleye Trail event, on Friday cutting open walleye and finding lead weights and prepared fish filets inside the winning catch of five fish to bolster their weight. Anglers Jacob Runyan and Chase Cominsky were disqualified. Messages seeking comment were left Monday with Runyan, Cominsky and Fischer. A spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources says ODNR officers gathered evidence. Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley in a statement said “these individuals will be held accountable.” Olympics – Publishing executive charged in Tokyo Olympic bribes scandal A top executive at a major Japanese publisher has been charged with bribing a former Tokyo Olympics organizing committee member. The charges against Tsuguhiko Kadokawa, a major figure in Japan’s movie and entertainment industry, are the latest in the unfolding corruption scandal related to last year’s Tokyo Summer Games. Kadokawa was arrested Sept. 14 on suspicion of bribing Haruyuki Takahashi with 69 million yen, or $480,000. Takahashi is a former executive at advertising company Dentsu who had great influence in arranging Olympic sponsorships. Kadokawa issued a statement saying he would quit as chairman. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Houston Astros 7, Detroit Tigers 0 Chicago Cubs 5, New York Mets 2 White Sox were off Astros 7, Tigers 0 – Valdez pitches 1st shutout, Astros blank Tigers 7-0 Framber Valdez pitched his first career shutout and the Houston Astros beat the Detroit Tigers 7-0. Valdez posted his 24th straight quality start, tying Jacob DeGrom in 2018 for the longest single-season streak. He gave up six hits and struck out eight with one walk. The Tigers were shut out for the second day in a row and club-record 21st time this season, tying them with the 1973 New York Yankees and 1976 Chicago White Sox for most by a team with a designated hitter. Jeremy Pena had three hits for the Astros and scored twice. Cubs 5, Mets 2 – Cubs hound Bassitt, beat NL East-leading Mets 5-2 Chris Bassitt had his shortest start in three months, failing to get through the fourth inning as the NL East-leading New York Mets lost to the Chicago Cubs 5-2. The Mets had won each of Bassitt’s last eight starts, a span in which he had a 2.24 ERA. But the right-hander gave up five runs in 3 2/3 innings — his quickest exit since he lasted a season-low 3 1/3 innings against San Diego on July 8. Rafael Ortega and Zach McKinstry homered for the Cubs. The Mets stranded 10 runners — including seven over the first six innings against rookie Javier Assad, who allowed five hits in earning the first victory of his career. Tonight Houston (Brown 1-0) at Detroit (Hutchison 2-7), 6:40 p.m.        WSJM/WCSY 6:20 Chicago Cubs (Sampson 1-5) at N.Y. Mets (deGrom 5-1), 7:10 p.m. Colorado (Kuhl 6-8) at Chicago White Sox (Kopech 4-9), 8:10 p.m. NFL – National Football League – Week 1 Yesterday Seattle Seahawks 17, Denver Broncos 16 Seahawks 17, Broncos 16 – Seahawks survive Wilson’s return, edge Broncos on missed FG Geno Smith threw two first-half touchdown passes, Denver fumbled twice at the 1-yard line in the second half, and the Seahawks beat the Broncos 17-16 in Russell Wilson’s return to Seattle. Brandon McManus missed a 64-yard field goal attempt with 20 seconds left and the Seahawks escaped with another wild victory involving Wilson at quarterback. Except this time Wilson was the opponent and there will be plenty of questions about Denver coach Nathaniel Hackett’s late-game clock management and decisions in his first game. Denver faced fourth-and-5 at the Seattle 46 and had three timeouts left, but the Broncos ran significant time off the clock before Hackett called timeout and decided to have McManus try the long field goal. NCAAFB – Notre Dame QB Buchner expected to miss season with injury Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner is expected to miss the rest of the regular season with an injury to his nonthrowing shoulder that will need surgery. Fighting Irish coach Marcus Freeman says Buchner has a severe AC joint sprain in his left shoulder. Buchner was injured in the fourth quarter of Notre Dame’s surprising loss to Marshall on Saturday. Drew Pyne, who came off the bench after Buchner was hurt, was listed as the starter on Notre Dame’s depth chart of Saturday’s home game against California. NCAAFB – Narduzzi mum on status of injured Pitt QBs Slovis, Patti No. 23 Pittsburgh is dealing with uncertainty at quarterback as the Panthers prepare for a road trip to Western Michigan. Starter Kedon Slovis left last week’s overtime loss to Tennessee with an undisclosed injury. Backup Nick Patti injured his left leg early in the fourth quarter but had limited mobility. Head coach Pat Narduzzi offered no update on the status of either quarterback. Dartmouth transfer Derek Kyler and redshirt freshman Nate Yarnell have been competing to be third on the depth chart behind Slovis and Patti. WNBA – WNBA Playoffs – WNBA Finals (best of 5) Tonight Connecticut Sun at Las Vegas Aces, 9:00 p.m.                             (LV leads 1-0) WNBA – Sun beaming with confidence despite loss to Aces in Game 1 The Connecticut Sun might be down one game in the WNBA Finals after losing their first series opener of the postseason, but they haven’t lost confidence thanks to a stringent defensive effort in Game 1. The Sun did what they hoped to do in by holding the league’s No. 1 offense well below their season average. The top-seeded Las Vegas Aces averaged a league-best 90.4 points per game during the regular season and were scoring a playoff-best 92.3 per contest heading into the finals. Sunday, the Sun held Las Vegas to its lowest point total of the postseason in the 67-64 loss. Tennis – Carlos Alcaraz: 19, US Open champ, No. 1, unique Carlos Alcaraz is the U.S. Open champion and the No. 1-ranked player in men’s tennis at age 19. And he is exhausted. He tells The Associated Press on Monday that he is not quite sure how he managed to play and win so many tough and long matches in a row to earn his first Grand Slam title. He also says he considers himself a unique player who can hit a lot of different shots and never gives up on a ball. He grew up admiring Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer but is not interested in comparing himself to either. NBA – Wolves reprimand Edwards for homophobic social media remark The Minnesota Timberwolves have reprimanded star guard Anthony Edwards for homophobic comments he made on an Instagram video and later apologized for. Timberwolves president of basketball operations Tim Connelly says the team is “disappointed in the language and actions” Edwards displayed in an Instagram video. Edwards made a disparaging, profane comment about a group of men on a sidewalk he recorded from a vehicle he was inside. Edwards deleted the post and apologized for his remark. Nikola Jokic, Kevin Durant, Rajon Rondo and Kobe Bryant are among players who’ve been disciplined by the NBA in the past for anti-gay language. Soccer – US Soccer investigation into NWSL misconduct nearing end U.S. Soccer says an investigation into alleged abuse and misconduct in the National Women’s Soccer League is expected to be completed by early October. The investigation led by former acting U.S. Attorney General Sally Yates was initiated last fall after North Carolina Courage coach Paul Riley was accused of sexual harassment and coercion by two former players. Riley was fired and league Commissioner Lisa Baird stepped down in the wake of the players’ claims. U.S. Soccer and the NWSL and its players union announced separate investigations. Boston Marathon – Boston Marathon to welcome nonbinary athletes to 2023 race Nonbinary athletes will be able to run in next year’s Boston Marathon without having to register as members of the men’s or women’s divisions. Race organizers announced the change on Monday as registration opened for the 127th running of the prestigious race next April 17. The Boston Athletic Association says it’s been working to expand opportunities for nonbinary people — not just for the marathon but for the BAA’s other events. It says nonbinary athletes can submit entry applications if they’ve completed a marathon as a nonbinary participant during the current qualifying window. Races around the U.S. increasingly are adding nonbinary divisions and offering equal prize money. NASCAR – Hamlin chasing NASCAR driver’s title, owner’s championship Denny Hamlin the driver finds himself in the most enviable of positions heading into Saturday night’s race at Bristol. His second-place run at Kansas Speedway over the weekend nearly ensured his spot in the next round of the playoffs. Denny Hamlin the owner? He’s feeling even better. The car he was chasing down in the waning laps of Sunday’s race happened to be the No. 45 driven by Bubba Wallace for 23XI Racing, which is owned by Hamlin and Hall of Fame basketball star Michael Jordan. The victory pushed the team into the next round in the race for the lesser-known owner’s championship. I’m not one for chartering the “black helicopter” but I know bullshit when I see it and Susan Rice’s “cover your administration’s ass” memo is exactly that.  She wrote that KNOWING that the Trump Administration would find out what the Obama Administration had done… all of it predicated on false/unverified reports which begs the question […]

This week, substantial evidence has come to light indicating that key players in the Obama administration, including his national security team and the FBI, have been involved in planning to actively undermine and sabotage Donald Trump as presidential candidate, president elect, and president. CIA director John O. Brennan, FBI director James Comey, and their deputies, have been repeatedly revealed as partisan operatives who went light on Hillary Clinton, while aggressively pursuing Trump and associates. House Intelligence Committee head Devin Nunes will now be pursuing contempt of Congress charges against the FBI for failing to provide information about top agent Peter Strzok, who has been intimately involved in the FBI's most sensitive investigations. He is credited with changing language during the Clinton email investigation from "grossly negligent" to "extremely careless", likely sparing Clinton from criminal prosecution. Top Mueller prosecutor Andrew Weissmann, meanwhile, has written emails praising acting Attorney General Sally Yates for refusing to uphold Trump's travel ban. Wiessmann has been Mueller's right hand man in the Trump-Russia collusion investigation. What has become abundantly clear is that there is not a shred of evidence to suggest collusion between Trump and Russia. But there is a mountain of evidence to suggest that in a highly unusual fashion, Obama has been sabotaging the administration of his predecessor.

Kellyanne’s making-up attacks and Spicer’s mixing up notes. Everybody’s in despair, every girl and boy. But when Flynn the Traitor resigns here, everybody’s gonna jump for joy. Come all without, come all within – you’ll not see nothing like the Traitor Flynn! ♪ Today, your Daily Trump Damage Report for February 14th, 2017.• Michael Flynn is now the most prominent casualty of the Bowling Green Massacre. Today, Amerikan General Michael Flynn has resigned as National Security Adviser. He is quoted as saying “I ams to beings sure that this is all huge misunderstandinks” despite the revelation that he may have been using encrypted communication to hide his exchanges with the Russians. From us.• Russian lawmakers immediately jumped in to trumpet loud support of Michael Flynn, asserting that Flynn’s only offense was being guilty of the “thoughtcrime” of being open to a dialogue with Russia. A dialogue which may have been encrypted, which he lied about numerous times to the media and to the Vice President, and which contained discussions about lifting sanctions against Russian intelligence placed on them after it was revealed they had interfered directly in causing the election of Trump.• It is now learned that last month, the acting Attorney General Sally Yates who was fired for refusing to defend the Trump’s Muslim ban, warned the White House that Michael Flynn could be the subject of blackmail by the Russians. She was promptly ignored. Not only was she ignored in her warning, but others were as well.• Verbal pulp fiction screecher and Trump termagant Kellyanne Conway is shredded by Joe Scarborough as an out of the loop liar for asserting that Flynn had the full confidence of the President, and a litany of other baseless, reality-averse lies.• Trump has granted press credentials to a pro-Trump blog. According to Russian journalists who have reported extensively on the methods Putin employs to keep reporting and journalism to a minimum in his authoritarian state, this is precisely the next step in that process.• Trump has requested 64 guest worker visas for employees at his Mar-a-Lago resort. While Trump was campaigning on bringing jobs back to America, he cut wages for the foreign immigrant workers whom he employs as wait staff and cooks at the resort.• Soulless Republican Congress-ghoul Jason Chaffetz has decided that investigating the Russian ties and super-forgetful ex-National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, he is going to use his powers to investigate a cartoon character. See, the CDC has been using a flappy little cartoon character to tell people about the dangers of Zika virus. And that’s just plain awful, considering the Jim Henson Company is doing the production. Chaffetz says he considers the Flynn matter settled. The more pressing business of his investigative committee is what kind of sound the letter “B” makes, and what did Oscar the Grouch know, and when did he know it?• Foreclosure King and pre-ghostly visit Dickens character Steve Mnuchin was sworn in as Trump’s Treasury Secretary. • The Washington Post does an in-depth piece on the torrent of abuse the current White House staff must endure. Specifically, from Trump. It turns out a sexual assault-prone oligarchic malignant narcissist without a firm grip on reality or truth is not a pleasant person to work for.• Republican Congresscritters, emboldened by Trump’s moves to annihilate stability and economic growth in America, would like very much to do away with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as well as Dodd-Frank regulation put in place to prevent another derivatives-driven crash. Credit card companies which donate heavily to GOP congressmen are apparently too stymied by burdensome regulations right now, like being required to tell consumers how much the annual fee is, or what the interest rate you are going to pay happens to be, or if you’ve opened an account with them or not.• The anti-Muslim ban may have had a court stay for the moment, but the courts would very much like to know how the intent to bring it about took place. Interestingly, for major cases that go before federal courts, the court is enabled to investigate and probe the development of the subject matter. The results of the probe will hopefully reveal the intent behind Trump’s insistence that national security is at stake, and that this is why we should ban Muslims from entering the country.• Not surprisingly, no one wants to attend this year’s White House Press Correspondent’s Dinner. Celebrities will not be present, nor will the major news organizations.• Trump maintains that the real problem with what has been happening lately is not what has been happening in his administration, but rather that what is happening is being reported on.• Russia secretly deploys a cruise missile in violation of international nuclear treaties. Trump is expected to roll over like a mangy terrier looking for a belly scratch.• Trump’s White House has posted inaccurate texts of his executive orders on its website.

As the House Intelligence Committee memo alleging FBI malfeasance in its Russia investigation grabs the headlines, a look back at Nixon’s Saturday Night Massacre. The Saturday Night Massacre was the hinge point of the Watergate scandal. The words coup and Third Reich were thrown around. The events of that weekend in October 1973 marked the beginning of the end of Nixon’s Presidency. Do they hold a lesson for today? President Trump has started his term of office exercising power in a similar fashion. His firing of the acting Attorney General Sally Yates has echoes of the Saturday Night Massacre. Nixon said, “If the President does it, it’s not illegal.” Trump acts as if he thinks that is the way the world works. But Nixon found out even his own Republican Party didn’t think that was true. Will Trump? This is an essay from my archive and it offers a chance to reflect on how American politics has changed in the more than four decades since the Watergate scandal.
