Big bazooka…the U.S. Federal Reserve launches a round of emergency measures, cutting interest rates by 100 points to zero, initiating a $700Bn QE programme, which includes treasuries and mortgage-backed-securities purchases. It also injects additional dollars in a coordinated action with other central banks around the world. Chairman Jerome Powell says liquidity is the top priority in light of the volatility caused by the Coronavirus outbreak. The markets, however, are not convinced. U.S. futures plunge, hitting limit-down, as the Dow drops 1,000 points. Asian indices fare no better, despite additional measures by the Bank of Japan. Europe shuts down, with Spain quarantining its 46m citizens and France and Germany closing large parts of their economies and beefing up border security. Boris Johnson’s government is pressured to do more as President Trump’s travel ban is extended to the U.K. and Ireland as of tomorrow. And there is dismal data from China as industrial production and retail numbers collapse. Fixed asset investment falls for the first time ever.

Is the Travel Ban issued by President Trump actually unconstitutional? Does it overstep the authority and the power that has been given to the President? In this episode of Fragile Freedom host Wyatt McIntyre takes on the question of the Trump Travel Ban that has been all over the news, taking a trip through time to discuss what power the President has in setting immigration policy and what power the judiciary has in reviewing those policies. Starting with the Alien and Sedition Acts he moves through the Chinese Exclusion Act and the Johnson-Reed Act straight through to measures issued by President's Jimmy Carter, George W. Bush and Barack Obama to see what previous Administrations were allowed. From there he looks at decisions rendered in the Chae Chan Ping v. United States, United States v. Ju Toy, and Harisiades v. Shaughnessy to determine what the courts have said in the past regarding their power with regards to Judicial Review of Immigration Policy. With these cases in hand he works through the precedents and the legislation to answer the deeper questions people may have as to what is actually within the President's power and what is not when it comes to issuing a exclusionary immigration policies.  So take the time to join us for this controversial but must listen episode of Fragile Freedom.

Some of the most powerful business leaders in America have been among those to criticize President Donald Trump's plans to ban travel from seven mainly Muslim countries. In particular the bosses of some of the country's biggest tech firms have been quick to call on the President to think again. We'll hear from the billionaire chief executive of the cloud software firm, Stripe, Patrick Collison. We'll also hear diplomatic reaction, from a former US ambassador and government adviser Norman Eisen, and hear from Dr Betsy McCaughey, Republican Lieutenant Governor of New York State in the 1990s and an economic adviser to Mr Trump while he was the President-Elect. With almost daily stories about robots taking over everything from driving our cars, to our day to day jobs, are we all getting a bit hysterical about the prospect of artificial intelligence taking over our lives? Dr Chris Brauer from Goldsmiths University in London thinks so, and he'll tell us why. Throughout the hour the BBC's Rob Young will be joined from Dehli by Sushma Ramachandran, former chief business correspondent at the Hindu Times. And from San Francisco by Michael Brune, Executive Director of the environmental campaign group the Sierra Club. Picture: Demonstrators gather outside of the Trump Hotel International during a protest in Washington, DC. Protestors in Washington and around the country gathered to protest President Donald Trump's executive order barring the citizens of Muslim-majority countries Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen from traveling to the United States.
