Eddie Muller, aka the “Czar of Noir,” is the host of Turner Classic Movies' Noir Alley. He is also the prolific author of novels, biographies, plays, films, and movie histories, including Dark City: Revised and Expanded Edition, the essential cocktail manual Eddie Muller's Noir Bar, and the children's book Kid Noir. He also programs and hosts the Noir City film festival series, curates museums, and provides commentary for television, radio, and DVDs. As founder of the Film Noir Foundation, Muller has been instrumental in restoring and preserving dozens of lost noir classics. He resides in the San Francisco Bay Area in California.

We are ending our month-long tribute to Vincent Price with a zany comedy. It was a successful movie from 1950, adapted for radio here in 1951, about an intellectual named Beauregard Bottomly (played by Ronald Colman), who goes toe-to-toe with the slimy president of a soap company, Burnbridge Waters (Vincent Price), set on a background of  radio/TV quiz programs. We're into the last stretch of THE LEFT HAND ENDEAVOR and we have five more classic noir to go and today we bid farewell to Chandler's iconic detective in our last MARLOWE MONDAY feature. Robert Montgomery definitely isn't our favorite Marlowe this month. Probably the worst one, actually, but this 1947 adaptation of “The Lady in the Lake” that he directed is pretty damn experimental. A first of its kind as far as we know. You see, Robert Montgomery is Philip Marlowe but also YOU are Philip Marlowe….kinda. This movie is shot from a first person perspective. Marlowe's perspective to be exact. There's no cutting within scenes. Just characters looking right at the camera all throughout the movie. Some parts look cool but the concept pigeonholes the execution. That said, Audrey Totter deserves credit for all the heavy lifting. It's probably more her movie than anybody else's, truly. We're crossing into the seedy sporting life for our film noir theme we're calling “THE LEFT HAND ENDEAVOR” and what sport feels more noir than boxing? Stoker feels like he's got one more good fight in him but his poor wife is sick of seeing his battered mug. She doesn't want the violence to ruin her marriage. Meanwhile, some scuzzy managers are making a set-up bet that they don't want to let the older boxer in on. Stoker drops any other time so maybe he doesn't need to know, right? We're taking in the rich environments and vivid characters in Robert Wise's 1949 boxing noir “THE SET-UP” and it's maybe a little too loose from the themes of it's original source material (a poem by Jospeh M. March) but a very worthy boxing feature in and of itself. It stars Robert Ryan, Audrey Totter, George Tobias and more. The biggest names in Hollywood and Broadway recorded for AFRS during the war years, The American Forces Network can trace its origins back to May 26, 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). The U.S. Army began broadcasting from London during World War II, using equipment and studio facilities borrowed from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The first transmission to U.S. troops began at 5:45 p.m. on July 4, 1943, and included less than five hours of recorded shows, a BBC news and sports broadcast. That day, Corporal Syl Binkin became the first U.S. Military broadcasters heard over the air. The signal was sent from London via telephone lines to five regional transmitters to reach U.S. troops in the United Kingdom as they prepared for the inevitable invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Fearing competition for civilian audiences the BBC initially tried to impose restrictions on AFN broadcasts within Britain (transmissions were only allowed from American Bases outside London and were limited to 50 watts of transmission power) and a minimum quota of British produced programming had to be carried. Nevertheless AFN programmes were widely enjoyed by the British civilian listeners who could receive them and once AFN operations transferred to continental Europe (shortly after D-Day) AFN were able to broadcast with little restriction with programmes available to civilian audiences across most of Europe (including Britain) after dark. As D-Day approached, the network joined with the BBC and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to develop programs especially for the Allied Expeditionary Forces. Mobile stations, complete with personnel, broadcasting equipment, and a record library were deployed to broadcast music and news to troops in the field. Lady in the Lake is a 1947 American film noir that marked the directorial debut of Robert Montgomery, who also stars in the film. The picture also features Audrey Totter, Lloyd Nolan, Tom Tully, Leon Ames and Jayne Meadows. The murder mystery was an adaptation of the 1943 Raymond Chandler novel The Lady in the Lake. The film was Montgomery's last for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), after eighteen years with the studio. Montgomery's ambition was to create a cinematic version of the first-person narrative style of Chandler's Philip Marlowe novels.[notes 1] With the exception of a couple of times when Montgomery (in character) addresses the audience directly, the entire film is shot from the viewpoint of the central character. The audience sees only what he does. MGM promoted the film with the claim that it was the first of its kind and the most revolutionary style of film since the introduction of the talkies. The movie was also unusual for having virtually no instrumental soundtrack, the music in the film being instead provided by a wordless vocal chorus. The film did not use Raymond Chandler's own 195-page screenplay adaptation dated July 5, 1945 which he wrote for MGM, but instead used a 125-page version written by Steve Fisher, which was filmed two years later.[2] The film's script changes the novel's midsummer setting to Christmastime, frequently using holiday themes as an ironic counterpoint to the grim aspects of the story. The opening credits are shown on a series of Christmas cards, which turn out to be concealing a gun. The Set-Up (1949) is a gritty boxing Film Noir starring Robert Ryan and Audrey Totter. The film is based on a poem by Joseph Moncure March, about a black boxer with the stuff to be a champ but was never given the chance. A small piece of the poem reads: Mean as a panther, Crafty as a fox, He could hit like a mule, And he knew how to box. Robert Montgomery reprises his screen role of Philip Marlowe from his innovative adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s Lady in the Lake. The movie put the audience in Marlowe’s shoes, with the camera acting as the detective’s eyes, but the story plays better on radio; without the occasionally distracting camera gimmick, listeners can dive into the story as Marlowe hunts for a missing wife. Montgomery is joined by his screen co-stars Audrey Totter and Tom Tully in this Lux Radio Theatre adaptation from CBS on February 9, 1948.
