Hey, podcast listeners! I just dove into an incredible 1987 biography on Ronald Reagan by Garry Wills, hands-down one of the best I've read about him. This isn't just a timeline of Reagan's life—it's like stepping through a time portal into his world, feeling what shaped him. Unlike most Reagan bios that zoom in on his presidency, this one focuses more on what made Reagan, well, Reagan: his boyhood, the Disciples of Christ Church, the political sparks at Eureka College, and his early broadcasting days in Des Moines. In this episode, I'm unpacking two fascinating slices of his story—his lifesaving heroics at Lowell Park on the Rock River and the Black Hawk War's role in the settlement of Dixon and Davenport, where Reagan lived. Trust me, this one's a gem!

In this Ask the Expert episode, HR expert Kathleen Hermacinski and Matt Trainum, vice president with the Council of Independent Colleges, respond to questions from listeners about the use of recruiting for roles in higher education. The questions they explore include how in-house and outside recruiting firms work at colleges and universities. Hermacinski said that outside firms search on behalf of the institution. Based on her experience as the head of human resources at Eureka College, she said they typically only use search firms for C-suite leadership positions, including president. Trainum said candidates must jump through a few hoops with the outside firm before talking with a decision-maker. That means they must create quick takeaways and concise pitches that can be easily relayed to on-campus contacts, he said. Hermacinski is the head of human resources at Eureka College. She recently took part in CUPA-HR's Ignite program, which is sponsored in part by HigherEdJobs. The program connects a select group of early-career higher ed HR professionals with CUPA-HR, and key leaders in the association and the higher education human resources profession.Trainum is the vice president for networks and strategic partnerships with the Council of Independent Colleges. fWotD Episode 2594: Ronald Reagan Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Tuesday, 11 June 2024 is Ronald Reagan.Ronald Wilson Reagan ( RAY-gən; February 6, 1911 – June 5, 2004) was an American politician and actor who served as the 40th president of the United States from 1981 to 1989. A member of the Republican Party, his presidency constituted the Reagan era, and he is considered one of the most prominent conservative figures in American history.Reagan graduated from Eureka College in 1932 and began to work as a sports broadcaster in Iowa. In 1937, he moved to California, and became a well-known film actor there. From 1947 to 1952, Reagan served as the president of the Screen Actors Guild. During the 1950s, he worked in television and spoke for General Electric. From 1959 to 1960, he again served as the Screen Actors Guild's president. In 1964, his "A Time for Choosing" speech gave Reagan attention as a new conservative figure. He was elected governor of California in 1966. During his governorship, he raised taxes, turned the state budget deficit into a surplus, and cracked down harshly on university protests. After challenging and losing to incumbent president Gerald Ford in the 1976 Republican presidential primaries, Reagan won the Republican nomination and then a landslide victory over incumbent Democratic president Jimmy Carter in the 1980 presidential election. In his first term, Reagan implemented "Reaganomics", which involved economic deregulation and cuts in both taxes and government spending during a period of stagflation. He escalated an arms race and transitioned Cold War policy away from détente with the Soviet Union. Reagan also ordered the invasion of Grenada in 1983. Additionally, he survived an assassination attempt, fought public-sector labor unions, expanded the war on drugs, and was slow to respond to the AIDS epidemic in the United States, which began early in his presidency. In the 1984 presidential election, he defeated former vice president Walter Mondale in another landslide victory. Foreign affairs dominated Reagan's second term, including the 1986 bombing of Libya, the Iran–Iraq War, the secret and illegal sale of arms to Iran to fund the Contras, and a more conciliatory approach in talks with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev that culminated in the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.Reagan left the presidency in 1989 with the American economy having seen a significant reduction of inflation, the unemployment rate having fallen, and the United States having entered its then-longest peacetime expansion. At the same time, the national debt had nearly tripled since 1981 as a result of his cuts in taxes and increased military spending, despite cuts to domestic discretionary spending. Reagan's policies also helped contribute to the end of the Cold War and the end of Soviet communism. Alzheimer's disease hindered Reagan post-presidency, and his physical and mental capacities rapidly deteriorated, ultimately leading to his death in 2004. Historians and scholars have typically ranked him among the middle to upper tier of American presidents, and his post-presidential approval ratings by the general public are usually high. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:36 UTC on Tuesday, 11 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Ronald Reagan on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Stephen Neural.

This week's coaching call with Team Strength Running member Chris Robinson will help put all the pieces together for running a fast 5k. This episode originally aired in 2021 but remains useful and relevant for any runner hoping to take their racing to the next level. Chris is a cross-country coach at Eureka College who has raced a variety of distances from 5ks to ultras. His sub-20 5k PR came several years ago in the midst of primarily aerobic half-marathon training. Since then his training has varied in consistency, as he has often put the needs of his collegiate runners ahead of his own. To challenge himself, Chris planned to race a 5k every month of the year as motivation to get back to consistent training and earn a new PR at the distance. We discuss his running background and training history, then delve into what he can do moving forward to train for a PR without getting burned out or injured from monthly racing. Our conversation covers: How Chris has struggled in the past with training structure Why increasing volume should be his initial priority How to implement speed maintenance work and strength training Strategies to keep his easy runs truly easy Why capacity building also improves your ability to sharpen your fitness Creating a plan to gradually make workouts more challenging and race-specific If you're looking to improve in the 5k or just learn how to improve your training structure, you'll enjoy my conversation with Chris! Links & Resources from the Show: Learn more about Team Strength Running Read more about training as a masters runner Structure your training to sharpen for a 5k Thank You Previnex! What does it mean to be human? How can other forms of being, such as non-human animals or algorithms, help us understand what makes humanity unique? Such questions are central to posthumanist research, which has been proliferating in recent years across the humanities and social sciences. Yet they are anything but new: as Erika Quinn and Holly Yanacek show in their recent book “Animals, Machines, and AI“, philosophy, literature, and the visual arts have been fascinated by non-human forms of life and interrogated received understandings of the human for centuries. Myrto Aspioti sat down for a virtual chat with the volume editors on the challenges of writing a book about our relationship to machines and animals just as Covid-19 hit, forcing us all behind screens and in the sole company of our beloved pets. Link to the book: doi.org/10.1515/9783110753677 The editors: Dr. Erika Quinn is Professor of History at Eureka College. Her research interests lie in Central European cultural history, focusing on subjectivity and the history of emotions. Her book, Franz Liszt: A Story of Central European Subjectivity, was published by Brill in 2014. She has also published articles on twentieth-century war widowhood and gender in the Journal of First World War Studies, the Women in German Yearbook, and elsewhere. Dr. Holly Yanacek is Assistant Professor of German at James Madison University. Her research focuses on emotion, narration, gender, ethics, and the non-human in 19th- to 21st-century Germanophone literature and culture. Her previous research has been supported by grants from Fulbright, the German Historical Institute, and the DAAD, and she has recently published articles in German Life and Letters, Monatshefte, and Novel: A Forum on Fiction. Yanacek co-edited (with Colin MacCabe) the collaborative book Keywords for Today: A 21st Century Vocabulary (Oxford University Press, 2018). This week's guest on the podcast has raced distances ranging from 5k to ultras. Although he's always been willing to put in the work, he has felt challenged by trying to create a successful training structure for himself. Chris Robinson is a Team Strength Running member and the Cross Country Head Coach at Eureka College in Eureka, Illinois. While his work as a coach has sometimes made his training take a backseat to that of his athletes, he's setting some exciting new goals for 2022. Chris is 49 and set some speedy PRs several years ago, including a 1:37 half marathon and a sub-20 5k. Looking ahead to 2022, he's setting the goal of running a 5k every month to rebuild training consistency and focus on getting faster. On this week's podcast, we'll take a closer look at Chris' running background and talk about many aspects of his training: What was his running like when he set his PR's, and how has it changed? What does his current training look like? What are his recent race performances? How can Chris structure his training to accomplish his goals? What are the fundamental aspects of his training to help him stay healthy while getting faster? If you'd like opportunities like this to come on the podcast, join our team! Thank You InsideTracker! Thank you Elemental Labs! A big thanks to Elemental Labs for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. And you can get a free sampler pack of 4 flavors and 8 individual packets when you pay $5 in shipping. Elemental Labs' products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. The citrus flavor has quickly become my favorite. I'm drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It's tasty and delicious and I find that I'm not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn't eating enough sodium. There's now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you're worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. They just released their first new flavor of 2021, their most requested flavor, watermelon salt. So check out Elemental Labs to try their new flavor or get a free sampler pack.

Jataun Rollins, LCSW is a native Chicagoan and a proud produce of the Chicago Public School System. Jataun is also a graduate of Eureka College in downstate Illinois. She speaks lovingly of Carol Gearing, a loving mentor who introduced her to the literary classics like Chaucer, Shakespeare, Richard Wright and countless others. Her parents, along with her mentor, made sure that she was well read and exposed. Her career trajectory has included working in a variety of capacities in child welfare, senior services and social welfare policy. Jataun is known in the community as a Subject Matter Expert and the “go to person” as it relates to children and family services. She also made a commitment during the early part of her work career that she would not remain working at someone’s desk for the remainder of her life. She knew at some point she wanted to draw on her entrepreneurial gifts and her intense desire to make a difference within the African American community. After having taken on a whole new job, where she hoped to add to her repertoire and skill set, Jataun lost that job and was unemployed for quite a bit of time. Her faith in God was really tested, and just as she was at her lowest point financially, she was notified that a grant that she applied for had come through! It was then that she founded 1863FWD, LLC along with its non-profit arm called 1863 Care 2 Care. The mission and focus of 1863FWD is to empower and prepare the formerly incarcerated with the ability to bring their strengths to their communities. Although Jataun realizes that many of these clients will secure traditional job opportunities, she is highly committed to grooming entrepreneurs where their often hidden talents can come to the forefront. Jataun, along with her parents, siblings, children and other extended family members have always found themselves engaged in a number of entrepreneurial pursuits. As if being a renaissance woman were not enough, Jataun, is a doll maker. Her dolls have been commissioned by Therapists who work with children who are greeted with positive images of themselves during counseling and therapeutic sessions. She is also a published author of books that also speak to children’s positive self-images. Her words of wisdom to women age 50+ include JUST DO IT! She wants us to operate within our passions and not listen to those voices that don’t uplift our vision. Her mantra is “You are packaged perfectly!” She also feels it is imperative that we identify what is important to us first and foremost. “I feel the first half of my life went to rearing children and fulfilling the expectations of others,” says Jataun. JUST DO IT! You can connect with Jataun on 1863FWD.org, as Jataun Rollins on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.
