EPISODE 78 - “FILM NOIR - Part 1 - WHAT IS NOIR?” - 3/10/2025 Have you ever wondered what exactly is film noir? TCM's EDDIE MULLER describes it this way: “Film Noir is all about treachery, deceit, and paranoia. You're never quite sure what is going on, who you can trust, or what dreadful pitfall waits around the corner.” This dark and twisted film genre popped up after WWII as a quiet cynicism began to creep into the national consciousness. In film noir, there is always an underbelly of darkness that comes out to play. And within the darkness, the shadows, and the neon lights, lie many stories of crime, dishonesty, adultery, murder, and mayhem. This week, we present the first in a special three-part series that delves into the darkest of genres where crooked cops, gangsters, torch singers, barflies, and other seedy character's live, love and kill. The menopause can cause all sorts of changes in your body – weight gain, hot flushes, sleeplessness and joint pain amongst others. Can what you eat help ease these symptoms? Officially a woman has reached menopause after 12 months without a period, however the transition itself can take years. Many women are prescribed hormone replacement therapy to tackle some of these symptoms, but lifestyle changes can also be helpful. In this programme we're joined by three women who have experienced menopause and found some benefits in food. Elizabeth Ward is a registered dietitian based in the United States. She co-wrote a book called ‘The Menopause Diet Plan, A Natural Guide to Managing Hormones, Health and Happiness'. Fiona Staunton is a trained chef in Dublin, Ireland, who offers menopause cookery courses called ‘Fiona's Food For Life'. Following a successful reunification, Amanda and Megan transitioned to a DFCS partnership home and haven't looked back since. Fast forward almost 5 years and 40+ placements, Amanda and Megan have provided a loving home to kiddos of all ages, backgrounds, and needs – sometimes for just a few hours and sometimes for many years. They have been most dedicated to a sibling set of toddlers and a sibling set of teenagers that have been with them long-term and who will always fill their hearts – even when they no longer fill their home. Amanda and Megan believe in the importance of reunification and partnership parenting and build incredibly strong bonds with the biological families.   The Region 5 Foster Care Community is incredibly important to Amanda and Megan and so they have recently joined forces with other local families to launch The Five Hive – a partnership initiative with DFCS. The Five Hive aims to establish a peer support network for foster families and a swarm of support for the entire Region 5 Foster Care community. Long-term, Amanda and Megan hope to not only impact the lives of the children in their care but also find ways to strengthen the Foster Care community throughout the state of Georgia."Originally from Jupiter, Florida, Megan fled the gator state to be a double-dawg, earning both her Bachelors and Masters in Public Relations from Grady College at the University of Georgia. Knowing what you want to do with your life from a young age is a rare gift, but when it happens, you’re absolutely unstoppable. Elizabeth Ward Creel, the owner of high-end fashion boutique Elizabeth W, joins me to talk about following your passion, excelling in your career, and opening your own store. Elizabeth tells us about how she started in retail and worked her way up to working in the buying department of Walmart. Sure, it wasn’t exactly where she wanted to be, but she got so much experience that she was able to use when she decided to build her own store. For Elizabeth, it was a lack of high-end fashion in her city that led her to ultimately decide to open Elizabeth W. By taking advantage of a gap in the marketplace, she has built a successful business with a large, national customer base. However, despite knowing so much about how to run a fashion business, Elizabeth didn’t know how to get started running her own store. She turned to business books for guidance, especially regarding a business plan, and her friends for support and advice where she lacked mentorship. Elizabeth shares some of the first hurdles she came across in her first year of business. Sometimes, these hurdles are in totally unexpected areas, such as hiring! But Elizabeth learned from these experiences and has used them to grow as a woman in business. Finally, we discuss how to strike that work/life balance that entrepreneurs are always talking about. Because it can definitely be a challenge to not be glued to your new business baby at all hours. Elizabeth gives some excellent advice about how she set herself a physical challenge to stick to during her first year in business. Are you ready to transition from your career to owning your own business? How are you striking the balance between work and life? Let me know in the comments on the episode page!   In This Episode: How you go from having a career to opening your own store Why you should take advantage of gaps in the marketplace What the advantage of investing in business books is Who can take the place of a mentor when you don’t have one What some of the unexpected hurdles are in the first year of business What you can do to help strike that balance between business and life   Quotes: “There are things when you start a business that you can never anticipate.” (16:40) “It’s difficult to strike that balance between home and social life and owning a business. Elizabeth Ward is one of the worship leaders at North Church. She is a wife to Jordan and mom to baby Noah. So many women experience trauma or just really difficult circumstances bringing children into their families, whether it’s through labor and delivery or another means of adding to the family. So much of that pain isn’t spoken about for fear of being “dramatic” or not being “strong enough.” Elizabeth shares about missing some of her son’s newborn moments, the fear of being a burden to others and letting them see us at our low points, and the lie that we are alone in our suffering. Elizabeth goes on to share the reality of PostPartum Depression and the shame that can come with it. Out of the pain she experienced, Elizabeth talks about God’s faithfulness and how he has used her story to help others through her worship album, titled Selah. We talk about having a BIG dream and not letting fear keep you from it and the power that comes from sharing your story. I recently read the blog post, "Why It's Ok to Eat Refined Grains" by Elizabeth Ward, MS, RD, and wanted to chat about it here on Speaking of Hungry. I've been telling people since the Atkins diet craze in the mid-late 1990s that CARBS ARE OK!  Why would you want to cut carbs? Why is everyone saying they're so evil? After some time we were then being told that complex carbs - whole wheat bread, brown rice, whole wheat pasta - are the way to go and refined grains - white rice, white bread, white pasta - are the death of us all.  I can't believe it's 2019 and we're still talking about cutting carbs. Listen here as I talk about why cutting out carbs leads to lacking nutrients and that we can eat white rice if that's what we truly want to eat. Tiredness, sleep issues, weight gain, digestive issues -- are these isolated symptoms or a sign of a bigger problem? According to some experts, it may be related to a non-medical diagnosis known as Adrenal Fatigue. While opinions differ on whether or not adrenal fatigue is "real" or really over-hyped, there's no denying the cluster of symptoms often associated with the condition are of real concern to many women. Today's guest is Cynthia Thurlow -- a nurse practitioner who specializes in the treatment of adrenal fatigue. In this episode she discusses: how adrenal fatigue is not yet recognized as a medical diagnosis why the cluster of symptoms is clinically relevant without a diagnosis what the most common cluster of symptoms are what defines a state of being "overstimulated" additional lifestyle factors that contribute to adrenal fatigue why "working harder and harder" isn't a badge of honor in terms of a woman's health what women are most at risk for adrenal fatigue Because adrenal fatigue is such a hot - and hotly debated topic - I wanted to offer up a few more viewpoints about the condition. First, I share some brief but candid feedback from registered dietitian Elizabeth Ward who expresses significant concern over practitioners treating a condition that isn't recognized by the medical community. Next, I offer some additional insights from registered dietitian Danielle Omar on how she works with clients to address the symptoms associated with adrenal fatigue but prefers to avoid the label. I'm closing out this episode with a recommendation for a new-to-me podcast, Light the Fight. I first learned of the podcast month's ago when a listener recommended it as a resource for a potential show on teen suicide (a show that I continue to work on producing, but haven't yet been able to secure Heidi Swapp -- the show's host -- as a guest on my show.) But it wasn't until I recently queried the This Unmillennial Life Facebook group and the show was once again recommended as a good listen to address the topic of Emotional Resiliency that I decided to start listening. If you have days where you're not sure who needs your help more -- your kids or your parents, you know you're an unmillennial. Today's episode of This Unmillennial Life scratches the surface on a topic that runs deep with both emotional responses and tactical requirements, the role of becoming caregiver to aging parents. For many unmillennials, but now is the time to begin the conversations around what our parents have planned (or not planned for) as they age and need additional help. In the show I interview Elizabeth Ward, MS, RD as she shares a personal account of what it was like to transition to becoming the caregiver for her mother prior to her death. In the episode, Liz shares:  The events that led to her mom needing full-time care How she found services to support her mom's desire to stay at home The financial impact of in-home care The need to discuss wishes ahead of time Why people should get comfortable having the uncomfortable conversations How email and texts can take away some of the barriers to discussing these topics Resources she found helpful, including (affiliate link->) A Bittersweet Season and MindingOurElders.com. The importance of taking care of the caregiver I wrap up this portion of the show by providing some additional resources I found online related to caring for an aging, and specifically note the valuable links available via the Caregiver Action Network. To end the show, I discuss whether or not my distaste for mail and lack of commitment to sending cards is an unmillennial trait, a more-millennial phenomenon OR simply my own personal quirk.
