The Frankenstein Brothers are ready to rumble! In this sorta-kinda sequel to Frankenstein vs. Baragon and the final Japanese/American collab with UPA, gargantuan bros Sanda and Gaira -- one friendly and peace-loving, one violent and hungry -- have a battle to the death, but not before extensive sequences of military fights, people-eating, and a big musical number. We get into this film's underlying darkness, the troubles with lead Russ Tamblyn (of Twin Peaks!), and a strangely empty story for the human characters.Cover Art by: DougPart of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectiveCover Art Gallery | Patreon | DiscordEmail: skreeonkpodcast@gmail.comTheme song: "BIO WARS - Synth Cover" by Kweer KaijuSources include: A Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series by David KalatIshirō Honda: A Life in Film, from Godzilla to Kurosawa by by Steve Ryfle and Ed GodziszewskiGodzilla FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the King of the Monsters by Brian SolomonYouTube Compilation of UPA Version DifferencesWikizilla

EPISODE 76 - “MEMORABLE OSCAR SPEECHES OF THE GOLDEN ERA OF HOLLYWOOD” - 2/24/2025 Winning an Oscar is a dream for most people who work in Hollywood. But you can't just win the Oscar, you have to have a good speech once your name is called and you head to the podium. There have been some great ones — OLIVIA COLEMAN's funny and cheeky speech hit the right tone and who can forget JACK PALANCE's one-arm push-ups or CUBA GOODING's exuberance? There have also been some bad ones — don't we all still cringe a little at SALLY FIELDS' “You like me” speech? As we prepare to celebrate the 97th annual Academy Award ceremony, Steve and Nan look back on some of their favorite Oscar speeches and why they resonate. So put on your tux, don the gown and jewels, pop the champagne, and join us for a fun talk about … well, people talking. "Cabin Boy" is a surreal comedy directed by Adam Resnick and produced by Tim Burton. The film stars Chris Elliott as Nathaniel Mayweather, an overprivileged, arrogant young man who has just graduated from the prestigious Fancy Lad School.Nathaniel plans to sail to Hawaii aboard a luxurious cruise ship to take up a cushy job arranged by his father. However, due to a mix-up, he boards the "Filthy Whore," a decrepit fishing vessel crewed by rough-and-tumble sailors. The mismatched Nathaniel is forced to adapt to the harsh and comically absurd conditions of life at sea.The crew, led by the gruff Captain Greybar (Ritch Brinkley), initially disdain Nathaniel's snobbish demeanor but eventually come to tolerate his presence. As Nathaniel bumbles through various misadventures, he encounters bizarre characters and fantastical sea creatures, including Chocki the half-man/half-shark (Russ Tamblyn) and a bizarre six-armed woman (Ann Magnuson).Throughout his journey, Nathaniel undergoes a transformation, learning valuable lessons about humility, hard work, and camaraderie. By the time the ship reaches its destination, Nathaniel has evolved from a pampered aristocrat to a more grounded and self-reliant individual."Cabin Boy" combines absurdist humor with whimsical storytelling, creating a unique cinematic experience that has earned it a dedicated cult following despite its initial box office struggles.Friends of the Show1 Man Mafia (twitch.tv/1man_mafia)Jayke The Gamer God (twitch.tv/JaykeTheGamerGod)IB Best Gaming (https://www.tiktok.com/@ibbestgaming)Support the Show.'Beavis and Butt-head' Cover art created by Joe Crawford

A bold memoir of an extraordinary, singular life lived by one of the world's most beloved and acclaimed figures: Russ Tamblyn. With more than eighty years as a celebrated artist and actor under his belt, Russ Tamblyn is a cherished figure to name among cinephiles and pop culture fans alike, working with such legendary directors as Robert Wise, David Lynch, and Quentin Tarantino. He tumbled through his acclaimed starring role in the original West Side Story as an actor and acrobatic dancer, taught Elvis Presley some signature dance moves, and became an unlikely visionary in the counterculture movement of the sixties alongside peers and friends Henry Miller and Dennis Hopper. Russ deftly guides readers through his star-studded life and his search for a deeper, more connected existence: attending school with Elizabeth Taylor, earning an Academy Award nomination for Peyton Place, dropping out of Hollywood at the height of his career to become a fine artist in Topanga Canyon, and forging a lifelong friendship with Neil Young. He shares the painful breakup of a twenty-year marriage and the joy of finding true love and inspiration as a husband, father, and mentor in his own right.Perfect for old and new fans alike, Dancing on the Edge is an intimate and powerful story about the singular life of one of our most gifted storytellers, artists, and stars of the silver screenBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
"There are some lives you have to read to believe they were really lived. Russ Tamblyn lived one of those lives. A killer story about one of our last remaining living legends of the screen. His time as child actor in the forties (in Gun Crazy), his time working and acrobatically dancing his way through MGM's glorious heyday of the fifties, to being one of the coolest iconoclasts of the sixties, to his days toiling in the world of sleazy seventies exploitation cinema (my favorite part), all written by the man himself." - Quentin Tarantino A bold memoir of an extraordinary, singular life lived by one of the world's most beloved and acclaimed figures: Russ Tamblyn. EPISODE 29 - “Jan Sterling: Old Hollywood Star of the Month” - 04/01/2024 Our “Star of the Month” is the fabulous JAN STERLING, who was married to our March “Star of the Month,” PAUL DOUGLAS. “Sometimes the truth is just too much, and sometimes it's not enough.” That's a line from Sarah Tomlinson's new novel, The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers, the story of a young ghostwriter scratching at the truth that threatens the legend of the fictional rock band of the title. A veteran journalist, essayist, music critic, ghostwriter, and memoirist, Sarah's work has appeared in The Boston Globe, Los Angeles Review of Books, Marie Claire, Los Angeles Times, Publishers Weekly, and Huffington Post. Her new novel puts an exclamation point on the maxim that says writers should write what they know: Sarah has covered the recording industry and the music scene for years, writing for Spin.com, Billboard.com and penning a local music column for the Boston Phoenix. She's even written band bios for record labels like Virgin, Red Ink/Columbia, and MySpace Records, and contributed to the electronic press kits for artists on Warner Bros. Records. As a ghostwriter, she has helped to write more than a dozen books, including three New York Times best-sellers and the forthcoming Dancing on the Edge, co-authored with the iconoclastic actor, dancer, choreographer Russ Tamblyn. Join us for a candid conversation on what it means to pick up a pen on behalf of someone else, and then to set that pen down to tell the tale of a ghostwriter looking to make sense of the senselessness and sensibility of a rock ‘n roll life gone sideways. One of the last surviving stars of Hollywood's Golden Age reflects on working as a kid alongside the likes of Cecil B. DeMille and Spencer Tracy; employing his tumbling background to dance in musicals like 'Seven Brides for Seven Brothers' and 'West Side Story'; and why, shortly after his Oscar nom for 'Peyton Place,' he "dropped out" of the biz, and then later returned. S2E2 Psychedelic Kaiju w/ War of the Gargantuas (1966) & Matango (1963) Kevin Moss from the Junk Food Dinner podcast joins Cory and Bob for the most wigged-out Japanese monster movies ever to come out of Toho Studios. First, it's the good Brown Gargantua vs. the evil Green Gargantua in a battle of land and sea elemental forces in the appropriately titled WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS (1966), an epic that rattled the minds of everyone from Guillermo del Toro to Tim Burton to friggin' Brad Pitt (who gushed about it once during The Oscars). It's also a favorite of Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO, who used to close out their set with "The Words Get Stuck in My Throat," the baffling-yet-catchy pop song that's ruined by Green Gargantua in the middle of the movie. Watch for it. The Gargantuas are about half the size of Godzilla or Rodan, and they don't have tails, so they move fast and hurl tanks like they're baseballs. Starring a decidedly unimpressed Russ Tamblyn from the original WEST SIDE STORY and the lovely Kumi Mizuno. Things get even weirder with our second feature, MATANGO (1963) aka ATTACK OF THE MUSHROOM PEOPLE. Seven stranded castaways (or maybe a few more) are shipwrecked on an island where the only thing to eat are mutated mushrooms with the power to transform you into creepy toadstool creatures. It's kaiju meets full-on body horror. Kumi Mizuno is back for this one along with Yoshio Tsuchiya and Akira Kubo. Both of our films also feature the artistry of Gojira director Ishiro Honda and special effects wizard Eiji Tsuburaya, which makes Honda the most featured director on OLD MOVIES FOR YOUNG STONERS of all time, since we profiled his ALL MONSTERS ATTACK (1969) in Season One, Episode Six. We haven't even done Orson Welles or Fritz Lang movies yet, but we've featured three Ishiro Honda movies. Priorities! Big thanks to Kevin Moss for joining us. His indispensable JUNK FOOD DINNER podcast is streaming on Apple Podcasts and your favorite podcast app. You can learn more about it at junkfooddinner.com. All of Bob's Ishiro Honda knowledge in this ep comes from the excellent book, "Ishiro Honda: A Life in Film from Godzilla to Kurosawa" by Steve Ryfle and Ed Godziszewski. Bob purchased the book from MZS.press, the bookstore run by movie and TV critic Matt Zoller Seitz out of his home. Highly recommended. Dead Mikey Number Eleven :Human Highway : The Musical So the gang finally got to see the movie Jean had been anticipating all season long, Human Highway – starring and directed by Neil Young. The flick also stars Dennis Hopper, Dean Stockwell, Russ Tamblyn, Sally Kirkland and Devo. Right at the top of the episode, Doug decided the best way to do an episode about a cult film most people have never seen – or even have access to – was to turn the podcast itself into a musical. So he grabbed his acoustic guitar and made up songs about it on the spot while Heather and Jean explained what it was we'd seen. Taping this episode was a blast. Footnotes and Follies: In an issue of Rolling Stone, members of Devo mentioned Sally Kirkland sued Neil Young over the cut tendon she suffered at the hands of Dennis Hopper. On this edition of Parallax Views, July 4th is just around the corner. What better way to celebrate than hitting the beach! Of course, if you're not careful in that water you could get munched up by a shark like in JAWS. Or worse... PIRANHA WOMEN! Piranha Women is the latest effort of Charles Band's long-running horror/fantasy/sci-fi factory Full Moon Features. It's also a return to said genre for it's director, the legendary independent filmmaker Fred Olen Ray. For a number of years now Fred has been working on TV, including making Hallmark Christmas movies with Chevy Chase and Lifetime thrillers. For him filmmaking is not merely some hobby, but a profession. Simply put, he's a working class filmmaker. Prior too much of his television work, Fred directed a great number of horror, sci-fi, action, and fantasy pictures during the VHS boom in the 1980s and a number of erotic thrillers during that genre's popularity in the 1990s. Among some of the cult classics Fred has directed are Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, The Tomb, Biohazard, Cyclone, Evil Toons, Inner Sanctum (one of the most successful video rentals of the 99s), Beverly Hills Vamp, Witch Academy, Alienator, Deep Space, Star Slammer, Bad Girls from Mars, Mind Twister, Attack of the 60 Foot Centerfolds, Inferno, Possessed by the Night, and countless others. Through it all he's worked with such well-known actors as Ice-T, Don "The Dragon" Wilson, David Carradine, Sybil Danning, Martin Landau, Nightmare on Elm Street's Heather Langenkamp, Eric Roberts, Gunna Hansen (Leatherface in the original 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Morgan Fairchild, comedy movie legend Eddie Deezen, Bond girl Britt Ekland, Twin Peaks' Russ Tamblyn, Sid Haig, and many, many others. A monster kid that grew up on drive-in horror movies, Piranha Women marks Fred Olen Ray's returns to the type of fun genre fare that's made him a cult figure amongst cinema buffs. And it stars such beauties as Carrie Overgaard and Keep Chambers as the deadly titular fish women. In this conversation Fred and I discuss a number of topics including: - The secrets of indie filmmaking from matching shots to filming big name actors on a schedule - Working with classic actors like John Carradine, Aldo Ray, and Cameron Mitchell - The tricks he used to film the animated monster in the ambitious low-budget live-action horror Evil Toons - Working with Full Moon and thoughts on the promotional wizardy of Charles Band - Filming nude scenes with actresses - How to make films on low-budgets and tight-schedules - The craft of filmmaking - Orson Welles' cinematographer Gary Graves and his sabotaged film Moon in Scorpio - How he began working on Hallmark and Lifetime movies; what TV networks expect out of him as a director and why he gets the job - Filmmaking as a job rather than a hobby - The killer ta-tas gag in Piranha Women - The rise and fall of the "Scream Queen" cycle of films in the 1980s directed by Fred, Jim Wyrnoski, and David DeCoteau starring actresses like Linne Quigley, Michelle Bauer, Brinke Stevens, and Kelli Maroney - Advice to young filmmakers and what Fred looks for in young filmmakers (including discussion of Fred's producer credits for Steve Latshaw's Jack-O, which was recently re-released on Blu-Ray by Fred's Retromedia company, and Henrique Couto's Bigfoot web-series Boggy Creek) - And much, much more!
Following up on their review of Frankenstein Conquers the World, your favorite kaiju hosts return to discuss its kinda, sorta, quasi-, pseudo-spiritual sequel - The War of the Gargantuas. It's a rip-roarin' rampage through this rubber-suited monster flick - a journey that leads you to maser cannons, tons of atmospheric lighting, a songstress that hasn't quite perfected her craft, Brad Pitt's origin story, and lots of Russ Tamblyn. On top of the film conversation, Jake and Jay highlight some of the biggest and best toy reveals from Super Festival Extra Volume 2 and go through Jay's army-building weekly pick-ups! ”Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” 1954 is set in 1850 and brings together wonderful Western themed musical and dance numbers and the horrible kidnapping of six women. Stanley Donen was Co-Director of “On the Town” 1948 (Episode 2) and “Singing in the Rain” 1952 (Episode 20), but as Director of this movie the disconnect between music and behavior smash head-on.Jane Powell as Milly marries Adam Pontipee played by Howard Keel. Milly gains the respect of the Pontipee brothers. Russ Tamblyn plays the youngest brother Gideon who eventually exhibits greater common sense and maturity than any of the other brothers. In 2004 the movie was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry of the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant”. We tend to break out into song, a lot. However, we're not much on dancing. If these movies have taught us anything, it's that in the 1950's, both things happened a LOT. Especially in the midst of gang violence and tragic love stories. In 1961, Robert Wise, Rita Moreno and Natalie Wood gave us the original West Side Story, an adaptation of this Broadway production. In 2021, Steven Spielberg and Rita Moreno are giving us the re-telling of this classic tale. Get your dancing Chuck Taylor's out of their mothballs and prepare your best Russ Tamblyn impression. We journey back to the cocaine fueled 80's to talk about the 1988 Fred Olen Ray film, The Phantom Empire. A movie where Jeffrey Combs is supposed to be the hearthrob?? Additionally, this movie has a racist Mexican comedy bit that shocked me almost as much as the claymation dinosaurs.
