For this MGM 1931 episode we watched The Easiest Way, a feminist subversion of melodrama tropes by director Jack Conway and screenwriter Edith Ellis, starring Constance Bennett as the fallen woman and a young Clark Gable, verging on stardom, as her judgemental brother-in-law; and possibly the most sentimental movie ever made, King Vidor's The Champ, starring Wallace Beery as a ne'er-do-well ex-boxing champ dad and Jackie Cooper as his passionately devoted son. EPISODE 75 - “MEHAR BABA BRINGS SPIRITUALITY TO OLD HOLLYWOOD” - 2/17/2025 During the 1920s and 1930s, a spiritual movement swept through Hollywood. It seems the Hollywood elite were about more than just speakeasies, flappers, and decadence. Some were searching for inner-peace and often found it -- at least temporarily -- in these various religious movements that popped up. One spiritual leader who came to prominence was India's MEHAR BABA, who believed that spirituality and metaphysics were interconnected. Stars like MARY PICKFORD, TALLULAH BANKHEAD, and MARIE DRESSLER were admirers. And when Baba visited Hollywood in May of 1932, you'll never believe where he stayed! Get enlightened and listen to this fascinating story of spirituality in Hollywood.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: The God Man (1964), by C.B.Purdom; Mehar Baba, www.meharcenter.org “Mehar Baba: A Brief Biography,” www.avatarmeharbabatrust.org; “Pete Townsend Speaks of Mehar Baba,” www.petetoensend.net; “Mehar Baba: The Compassionate Father,” www.ramdass.org; “Highest of the High: Full Message By Mehar Baba with Introduction,” YouTube, com; Wikipedia.com; Movies Mentioned:  The Devil and the Deep (1932); starring Tallulah Bankhead, Gary Cooper, Charles, Laughton, & Cary Grant; Love Me Tonight (1932), starring Maurice Chevalier, Jeanette MacDonald, Charles Ruggles, & Myrna Loy; Grand Hotel (1932), starring Greta Garbo, John Barrymore, Joan Crawford, Lionel Barrymore, Wallace Beery, & Lewis Stone; --------------------------------- http://www.airwavemedia.com Please contact sales@advertisecast.com if you would like to advertise on our podcast. Give online therapy a try at betterhelp.com/BENEATH and get on your way to being your best self.” ** In the great film noir classic Thieves Highway, a gripping drama that takes on the dirty underbelly of the trucking industry, the spectacular RICHARD CONTE plays Nick Garcos, a world-weary, jaded, World War II vet who returns home. After finding his family's produce business in shambles and his father crippled, he seeks revenge against the crooked rival produce dealer who caused his father's accident. In his gripping portrayal, Conte shows his strengths as an actor. With his square shoulders, cleft chin, and intense eyes, Conte gives the impression that he means business. Conte was just as comfortable playing mobsters and street hoods as he was playing charming, sympathetic leading men. He always projected manly strength, and you knew he was no one you wanted to mess with. So say hello to our Star of the Month, RICHARD CONTE. Produced by Irving Thalberg, this MGM extravaganza is the only Best Picture winner not to be nominated in any other category.  In The English Patient, Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas lead the cast under Anthony Minghella's Oscar-winning direction, in this adaption of Michael Ondaatje's novel that follows a love affair during World War II. MONSTERBATING: “You can hop, but you can't hide”. Join film enthusiast and blogger Tony Cogan (Coogs Reviews) as we discuss Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were Rabbit and the 1931 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, two films about experiments that go wrong and result in the creation of a monster (don't you hate when that happens?). Also, enjoy an episode that covers some of the same ideas: Jurassic Park/Frankenstein/Bride of Frankenstein/Son of Frankenstein at https://anchor.fm/dashboard/episode/elsfomas well as Apple, Spotify and other streaming services. Don't you hate it when something goes a little wrong? You create a person out of spare body parts and they go on a murderous rampage. You create dinosaurs out of DNA and they go on a murderous rampage. You create a serum to get rid of the bad part of you and you go on a murderous rampage. You create a mind manipulator for bunny rabbits and you end up going on a murderous rampage of…well, vegetables, but the principle is the same. Sounds like it's time for Episode 64 of Pop Art, the podcast where my guest chooses a movie from popular culture, and I'll select a film from the more art/classic/indie side of cinema with a connection to it. This time, I am happy to welcome as my guest, film enthusiast and blogger Tony Cogan, who has chosen as his film the stop motion animated comedy Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, while I have chosen the pre-code horror film Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, both films about scientific experiments gone wrong resulting in the creation of a monster. And in this episode we'll answer such questions as: How do you pronounce Jekyll? What does a director do on an animated film? How were the special effects achieved in Dr. Jekyll…? What is the difference between American and British horror/sci-fi films of the 1950s and 60s? Why did Wallace Beery tie with Frederic March for Best Actor at the Oscars? Just what is it about animated films and their increase in popularity? What's innovative about the opening scene in Dr. Jekyll? What movie beat out Wallace and Gromit by $200,000 the 2nd week of opening? Why did posters have to be altered in Portland, Dorset, UK? We get a glimpse inside this ultra-exclusive home (later owned by actor John Barrymore and director Tony Scott), and also a drone’s-eye view of the beautiful grounds. We praise Jackie Cooper’s astonishing performance, Wallace Beery’s plan to become the highest paid actor in Hollywood, and the innovative way that King Vidor moved the camera to capture some exciting boxing sequences in the early days of “talkies.” We also discuss Frances Marion’s terrific script, and the power that women had as Hollywood was just becoming Hollywood.
