EPISODE 78 - “FILM NOIR - Part 1 - WHAT IS NOIR?” - 3/10/2025 Have you ever wondered what exactly is film noir? TCM's EDDIE MULLER describes it this way: “Film Noir is all about treachery, deceit, and paranoia. You're never quite sure what is going on, who you can trust, or what dreadful pitfall waits around the corner.” This dark and twisted film genre popped up after WWII as a quiet cynicism began to creep into the national consciousness. In film noir, there is always an underbelly of darkness that comes out to play. And within the darkness, the shadows, and the neon lights, lie many stories of crime, dishonesty, adultery, murder, and mayhem. This week, we present the first in a special three-part series that delves into the darkest of genres where crooked cops, gangsters, torch singers, barflies, and other seedy character's live, love and kill. EPISODE 66 - “WHEN CLASSIC FILM'S SUPPORTING ACTORS STEAL THE SHOW” - 12/16/2024 There is nothing quite like watching a film when suddenly a supporting character comes in and walks away with the film. (Think THELMA RITTER, S.Z. SAKALL, or GALE SONDERGAARD in almost every one of their films!) This week we are focusing on some of our favorite supporting charters who come in and snatch that scene right about from under the big stars. From JOANNA BARNES' Gloria Upson declaring, “It was just ghastly!” in “Auntie Mame” to the impassioned monologue about love that BEAH RICHARDS delivers to SPENCER TRACY in “Guess Who's Coming To Dinner,” we take a fun look at these powerful performances that we're still talking about today. To kick things off in this episode, we'll be discussing the great PAUL DOUGLAS. You may not know his name, but you certainly know his face. With his somewhat craggy mug that usually sported a hang-dog look, he made a career at playing gruff, tough guys who were usually softies underneath, as he does so perfectly as LINDA DARNELL's rough-around-the-edges businessman husband in “A Letter To Three Wives” (1949). We're talking musicals today! Samantha recommends Six, the musical about the six wives of Henry VIII, Indy goes classic with Gene Kelly's Singin' In The Rain, and we preview The Sound Of Music, which we will dive into next episode! Singin' In The Rain Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSE8sl2-PZg&ab_channel=WarnerBros.Entertainment The Sound Of Music Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygyK0HStjwg&ab_channel=ParkCircus   Six is a British musical comedy with music, book, and lyrics by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss. It is a modern retelling of the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII, presented in the form of a pop concert. In the show, each of the wives (Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Katherine Howard, and Catherine Parr) take turns telling their story to determine who suffered the most from their common husband. The musical was premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017, where it was performed by students from Cambridge University. Six premiered on the West End in January 2019, and has since embarked on a UK tour. An Australian production opened at the Sydney Opera House in January 2020. It premiered on Broadway in March 2020 and, following a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, officially opened at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on 3 October 2021.[6] Two North American tours, dubbed the "Aragon" and "Boleyn" tours, began in 2022. Singin' in the Rain is a 1952 American musical romantic comedy film directed and choreographed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, starring Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds and featuring Jean Hagen, Millard Mitchell and Cyd Charisse. It offers a lighthearted depiction of Hollywood in the late 1920s, with the three stars portraying performers caught up in the transition from silent films to "talkies". The film was only a modest hit when it was first released. O'Connor won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, and Betty Comden and Adolph Green won the Writers Guild of America Award for their screenplay, while Jean Hagen was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. However, it has since been accorded legendary status by contemporary critics, and is often regarded as the greatest musical film ever made and one of the greatest films ever made,[2] as well as the greatest film made in the "Freed Unit" at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It topped the AFI's Greatest Movie Musicals list and is ranked as the fifth-greatest American motion picture of all time in its updated list of the greatest American films in 2007. I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa

Good mornin'! Good mornin'! We talked the whole pod through... Yes, this week we've unintentionally crafted the perfect triple-bill, following up The Muppet Movie and Bowfinger with yet another showbiz comedy musical as we go puddle-splashing in our brightest yellow coats with 1952's Singin' in the Rain, co-directed by Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly, and starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O'Connor, Jean Hagen, Millard Mitchell and Rita Moreno. If comedy is the genre that does not hold up with the age, this just might be the exception that proves the rule as the film is just as dazzling and hilarious as it was 71 years ago, and it's influence is still felt today, quite notably in this summer's Barbie. Beyond just Barbie, other movies discussed in this episode include: Talk To Me, Oppenheimer, Michael Clayton, Blue Beetle, Past Lives, Friedkin Uncut, The Exorcist, High Noon, The Greatest Show On Earth, Into the Woods, Detour, Fast X, and 80 For Brady. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along -- which in this case you absolutely should -- it is currently streaming on Crave in Canada at the time of publication. We'll back next week most likely talking Rian Johnson's conman caper The Brothers Bloom, which is currently streaming for free on Tubi.

Technological disruption wasn't just dreamed up by annoying tech bros in Silicon Valley. Fortunes have been made and lost over advances in technology ever since the stone age gave way to bronze. And Hollywood has definitely seen more than its share of it over the past 100 years or so with talking pictures, television, home video and streaming all bringing on one form of creative destruction or another to the movie industry. In this episode, we talk about a pair of classic films that tackle this topic. First up, Gene Kelly is back on OMFYS with Singing' in the Rain (1952), a musical spoof of Hollywood's transition to talkies in late 1920s that came out when the movie industry was facing a similar upheaval brought on by the proliferation of television. Co-starring Donald O'Connor as a wise-cracking songwriter, and introducing Princess Leia's mom, Debbie Reynolds, as Kelly's love interest. Also featuring Jean Hagen doing the comedic heavy-lifting in the thankless role of the villainous Lina Lamont, a diva with a voice for silent movies, plus an early appearance by EGOT winner–that's Emmuy, Grammy, Oscar AND Tony– Rita Moreno, and CYD CHARISE putting a bit of sizzle in the sensual ballet sequence. Co-directed by Kelly and Stanley Donnen and produced by Arthur Freed, who also supplied the songs, this is widely considered the best movie musical. Singin' in the Rain is streaming on HBOMax. Next, Charlie Chaplin, arguably the biggest silent movie star of them all, keeps the silents alive well past their sell-by date, with this slapstick farce with his Little Tramp persona driven to madness by the drudgery of industrialization. Also starring Paulette Goddard, Chaplin's wife at the time, as the gamine, and Al Ernest Garcia, cast as the control-freak factory owner because of his resemblance to Henry Ford. Featuring some amazing Metropolis-like sequences with the Little Tramp literally being caught in the gears of machinery and him roller skating on the edge of certain death or at grievous least injury. Directed, written, produced and starring Charlie Chaplin, who also composed the musical score that inspired a later hit by Nat King Cole. Modern Times is streaming on HBOMax, Criterion Channel, and Kanopy. Starting off the episode, Philena, Bob and Greg take apart the Letterboxd Top 100, and Philena schools the olds on the definition of vintage. It's a pretty rousing chat as Bob was, um, a little bit caffeinated, maybe? Cory Sklar is on assignment but he does make a special appearance via the magic of modern video editing technology. Weed is at your local dispensary. If you get it on the streets, we don't need to know. Dana and Tom are back for Season 3 and start with both their favorite musical and possibly the best movie musical of all-time, Singin' In The Rain: starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donald O'Connor. Plot Summary: Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) is a popular silent film star who barely tolerates his vain, spoiled, conniving, and shallow leading lady, Lina Lamont, (Jean Hagen) though their studio, Monumental Pictures, links them romantically to increase their popularity. Lina is convinced that they are in love, despite Don's protestations otherwise. At the premiere of their latest film, The Royal Rascal, Don is forced to escape his adoring fans and jumps into a passing car driven by Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds). She drops Don off, but not before claiming to be a stage actress and sneering at his "undignified" accomplishments as a movie star. Later, at an after-party, to Don's amusement, Kathy pops out of a mock cake right in front of him, revealing herself to be a chorus girl. Furious at Don's teasing, she throws a cake at him, accidentally hitting Lina in the face, and then flees. Don becomes smitten with Kathy and a budding romance starts. After rival studio, Warner Bros., has an enormous hit with its first talking picture, the 1927 film The Jazz Singer, the studio head (Millard Mitchell) decides he has no choice but to convert the next Lockwood and Lamont film, The Dueling Cavalier, into a "talkie", but the initial preview screening is a disaster. Don and Kathy, aided by Don's musical sidekick, Cosmo Brown (Donald O'Conner), set out to try to save the movie and their careers. Will they succeed or will Lockwood and Lamont be yet more silent film stars sent to the dustbin of history? Please follow, rate, and review the show wherever you get your podcasts. The discussion touches on the magic of musicals, while both films deconstructing the magic of cinema. Nostalgia for older cinema, in both films. The suspension of disbelief in musical films and the grey area between fantasy and reality. The Academy being behind the eight-ball and taking a year or so to catch up. The potential renaissance of musicals in Disney Animation Studio films, particularly Moana (2016). The message of La La Land is problematic, while the female representation of Singin’ In The Rain is equally problematic. The impressive technical achievements of both films. The strength of Jean Hagen in Singin’ In The Rain and her underrated performance as Lina Lamont. The film is set in the 1920s, when silent films were being pushed aside by “talkies.” Gene Kelly plays Don Lockwood, a popular silent film star who is famous for his on-screen romances with Lina Lamont, played by Jean Hagen. Behind the scenes, Lina is a total diva who happens to have a high-pitched, whiny voice that will never work for a film with sound. Enter Debbie Reynolds as Cathy, a young actress who falls for Don and has the perfect voice that can be dubbed in for Lina’s… SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN has a great plot, but the real appeal of this film, in our opinion, is the trio of Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donald O’Connor, plus the memorable songs. In this episode, we talk about how SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN was basically made as an excuse to recycle songs from the twenties and thirties, Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen as co-directors, and the superstar singer, dancer, and actor who was rumored to have helped Debbie Reynolds work on her dancing after he found her crying under a piano after leaving a rehearsal. Grab an umbrella and get ready to jump into what many people consider the greatest movie musical ever made!
