Research data obtained from animal experimentation and extrapolated to human conditions is unreliable and ineffective, and delays progress for human health. Animal-based research and teaching represents unnecessarily cruel, empirically compromised and unethical treatment of non-consenting sentient beings. The replacement of animals with validated non-animal methods will facilitate scientifically reliable, effective, empirically valid research outcomes. AFSA recognises that some research, such as observation of wild animals for conservation purposes, is non-invasive, and that in some circumstances, veterinary research or training can be conducted without harm to animals. Whilst we advocate for animal-free research, we accept that under very limited conditions, animal use may be permissible, when in the interests of the individual animal/s used in such research. Put simply, they disagree with any harmful use of animals in science What is ‘harmful use'? Any use of animals that cause pain, suffering, distress, or lasting negative impact, including death—without any clear benefit to the animals themselves. Note: even if the research conducted is not considered harmful, the laboratory environment itself can cause suffering and the prevention of natural behaviors and thus be detrimental. ====================== FOLLOW THE SHOW ON: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@plantbasedbriefing Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2GONW0q2EDJMzqhuwuxdCF?si=2a20c247461d4ad7 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/plant-based-briefing/id1562925866 Your podcast app of choice: https://pod.link/1562925866 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PlantBasedBriefing LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/plant-based-briefing/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/plantbasedbriefing/ #vegan #plantbased #plantbasedbriefing #veterinarians #animalcare #vettech #animaladvocate #vegantrauma #vystopia

And each year, leaders are tasked with bringing levels up, but how? My friend Dan Pontefract, leadership strategist, culture change expert, speaker, Tragically Hip superfan (if you're Canadian, you'll understand this), and best-selling author of four books, joins us today to share his thoughts on how you can make Work and Life Bloom…no coincidence, that's the title of his newest book… “Work-Life Bloom”. Dan suggests we have been getting leadership's definition wrong, largely because of three big myths: Work-life balance is a zero-sum game, the invitation for authenticity has only been lip service, and focusing on employee engagement has been a complete miss.CHAPTERS00:03:23 Book origins00:07:01 A sense of agency and autonomy00:10:45 Speaking up when necessary00:13:34 The 4 Personas00:17:48 Leaders getting involved00:26:44 Are we expecting too much of our leaders?00:31:16 What is the perception of leaders?00:36:27 Dan's overarching goalLINKSGallupBlessing/WhiteAon HewittGallup - Employee EngagementWorld Health Organization - Burn-out an "occupational phenomenon"Dr. Vivek H. Meditation: Compassion Practice – Tonglen - Our deepest wisdom and purest actions arise out of open-hearted presence. This meditation, “Awakening Compassion,” is drawn from the Tibetan tradition and carries us home to the vastness of loving presence (re-mastered from the 2013 IMCW fall 7-day silent retreat).
Venture under Maharajji's blanket as Willie Katinowsky, author of “Spiritual as F*ck”returns to the show. We discuss compassion, Buddha, the judgmental mind, spiritual community, social media and how it all relates to our spiritual awakening. “Judgment comes, in part, out of your own fear. You judge other people because you're not comfortable in your own being. By judging, you find out where you stand in relation to other people.” - Ram Dass Willie is the author of Spiritual as F*ck and a teacher of yoga and meditation, currently in the Reading Pennsylvania area. We endure a greater sense of meaning, enjoyment, and connection to and from life when we are living with an open-heart and a sense of compassion. I'm confident that we can all relate to being in a experience in which we felt deeply connected to and caring for those around us, and just how inherently fulfilling this is. Awakening IS the opening of the heart and awakening of a sense of compassion. Cultivating this sense can be done with practice. Here's my experience with being in this intention and a specific practice for how we may do so.
This session is dedicated to my teacher, Tina Porter, and her family; and our Asian brothers and sisters. Tonglen is 'taking and sending' meditation. We draw the suffering or pain of another into our hearts and send them relief. It awakens compassion and connects us to others. When we are able to hold the suffering of another, we deepen our capacity to love and experience life fully. "Compassion is not the relationship between the healer and the wounded. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. All five co-hosts grab some tea, full of compassion for one another, to talk about awakening compassion. The conversation begins with definitions and connections to spirituality. Since everyone thinks compassion is a good thing, co-hosts wonder how we become more compassionate. By awakening? By watering a seed inside of ourselves? Through training? The conversation turns to a Christianity informed by compassion. Allen brings Tibetan Buddhism and tonglen breathing practice into the space. Bonnie brings in an Orthodox Christian breathing practice. Connecting breath and compassion, co-hosts discuss the possibility of a compassion-centered Christianity. It turns out compassion is a rather divisive, controversial idea within Christianity. Co-hosts’ formation and evolving Christian identity become exposed in interesting ways. Co-hosts realize the effects of being formed within Christianity communities that disavow Christ’s vulnerability and woundedness are still present in them. The episode closes with a rousing round of Sound Charades. It’s obvious the cups of tea (and perhaps, compassion) have grown cold as co-hosts compete to the bitter, disputed end. Dr. Monica Worline is the founder and CEO of EnlivenWork, an organization that teaches other organizations how to use compassionate leadership to humanize and energize the workplace. In addition, she is a research scientist and the Executive Director of Compassion Lab. Her book, Awakening Compassion at Work: The Quiet Power That Elevates People and Organizations, is a practical guide to practicing compassion on the job. She joins Marcel to discuss the book and how its principles apply to all organizations. Compassion is often misunderstood as a four-part human experience which unfolds in relation to suffering or pain. The four parts are: notice someone’s pain; interpret their pain as worth one’s time, attention and action; empathize; and take action to alleviate or address the pain. Marcel adds that people believe the fourth step is the most crucial since they think that true compassion is removing the burden from someone’s shoulders. [7:29] Kindness and compassion are often mixed up together. The key differentiator, Monica says, is that kindness is a voluntary activity that helps another person flourish, whether there is suffering or not. [9:10] Humans have an innate instinct to help those who are suffering, but we unlearn it through institutions and/or family structures. [12:58] There is a cultural and normative bias built into the word ‘compassion’ as it is most often associated with words like ‘nurture’ and ‘care.’ These connotations make compassion seem like “women’s work” and only fit for caregiving institutions, Monica argues. This may hold people back from speaking about or practicing compassion in the workplace for fear of being perceived as ‘weak’ or ‘soft.’ [17:44] Companies lose billions of dollars every month due to a lack of compassion, Monica says. Marcel shares his experience in a toxic work environment where he was sent to the ER due to stress-related back pain. [20:17] Commitment and retention are two major benefits of building a compassionate culture at work. Compassion is essential in the trial and error world of the innovation industry. [25:44] A powerhouse leader is someone who prioritizes connecting with human beings over strategic aims. [31:00] Leaders should make space in their organizations for compassion so that it becomes part of the fabric of the organization. This can be designed within the organization’s networks, roles, routines, and culture. [33:23] The main obstacle to interpersonal compassion is fear: we fear giving compassion because we believe we would be perceived as weak, and we fear receiving it because we believe we would be taken advantage of. [41:33] Monica shares a sociological theory that argues that people will take advantage of you at any given opportunity. Western capitalism is rooted in this theory; the structure of the economic system is based on it. As such, leaders born into this system are more inclined to lead through fear. In this episode of Better Thinking, Nesh Nikolic speaks with Dr Paul Atkins about building effective prosocial groups. Dr Paul Atkins co-developed the Prosocial process which draws upon the psychology of behavior change as well as political, economic and evolutionary science to improve cooperation within and between groups. Paul’s work has been published in the world’s leading management and psychology journals. His latest book “Prosocial: Using Evolutionary Science to Build Productive, Equitable, and Collaborative Groups” has been described as "groundbreaking”, and "chock full of clear steps" (Jane Dutton, author of Awakening Compassion at Work). It is " essential reading for anyone who works with people in group settings, and who is committed to helping these groups to be their best.” says Susan David (author of Emotional Agility). Today I'm really excited to have Monica Worline and Jane Dutton on the podcast, co-authors of the new book Awakening Compassion at Work: the Quiet Power That Elevates People and Organizations. Monica Worline, Ph.D., is founder and CEO of EnlivenWork. She is also a research scientist at Stanford University Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education and executive director of Compassion Lab. Jane Dutton, Ph.D., is the Robert L Kahn distinguished University professor of business administration and psychology and cofounder of the Center for Positive Organizations at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business. She's also a founding member of Compassion Lab. A central thread in their work is that business has become dehumanized and impersonal. "One of the things that we're seeing as technology takes over more of our work spaces is there's an expectation that people are always available and always on, but that is driving out some of the human connection of work. " Increased busyness, workplace pressures and the distractions of technology increase our attentional load and handicap us from being able to notice the need for acts of compassion. The two define compassion in a way that is distinct from most psychologists. That is, their definition is a 4-step process: Noticing Interpreting (Making sense of human suffering) Feeling Acting (Responding to human suffering) In our conversation we unpack what each of these stages entails as well as addressing male vs. female values in the workplace, the role of the "toxin handler" in the ecosystem, why goal-oriented people should consider working on the culture of compassion at work, how to tackle the short term vs. long term horizon challenges of business when building compassionate cultures, and how organizations have become obstacles to compassion at work. We can only alleviate what we pay attention to. The demanding culture of work organizations can drive out our capacity to notice the human state of other people. Through their book and speaking, Dutton and Worline hope to empower change agents in a host of settings. We hope that you leave this episode with a newfound sense of the importance of compassion and with multiple languages to convince others in your organizations to enforce and devote resources to it. Jane and Monica also bring a variety of examples that really crystallize these ideas. It was an honor to speak with these two, and we hope you enjoy the podcast!
