Dan is the best-selling author of four books: “Lead. Care. Win.”, “Open to Think”, “The Purpose Effect”, and “Flat Army”. A renowned speaker, Dan has presented at four different TED events and also writes for Forbes and Harvard Business Review. Dan is an adjunct professor at the University of Victoria, Gustavson School of Business and has garnered more than 20 industry awards over his career. He is also a huge fan of Canadian band “The Tragically Hip”.Employee engagement has been stuck at sad, low levels ever since pollsters have been measuring it. And each year, leaders are tasked with bringing levels up, but how? My friend Dan Pontefract, leadership strategist, culture change expert, speaker, Tragically Hip superfan (if you're Canadian, you'll understand this), and best-selling author of four books, joins us today to share his thoughts on how you can make Work and Life Bloom…no coincidence, that's the title of his newest book… “Work-Life Bloom”. Dan suggests we have been getting leadership's definition wrong, largely because of three big myths: Work-life balance is a zero-sum game, the invitation for authenticity has only been lip service, and focusing on employee engagement has been a complete miss.CHAPTERS00:03:23 Book origins00:07:01 A sense of agency and autonomy00:10:45 Speaking up when necessary00:13:34 The 4 Personas00:17:48 Leaders getting involved00:26:44 Are we expecting too much of our leaders?00:31:16 What is the perception of leaders?00:36:27 Dan's overarching goalLINKSGallupBlessing/WhiteAon HewittGallup - Employee EngagementWorld Health Organization - Burn-out an "occupational phenomenon"Dr. Vivek H. The Peter B. Gustavson School of Business at the University of Victoria has unveiled the fifth annual Gustavson Brand Trust Index with key trends suggesting that consumers  are more willing to place a brand in a positive light when a company responds to a crisis with honest and authentic remedies. Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) led this year's ranking as the most trusted brand in Canada, despite consumer criticism over the lack of diversity in their advertisements. MEC was forthright in acknowledging the lack of representation in how it depicted people in outdoor activities and actively addressed the lack of diversity in multiple ways that helped maintain consumer trust.   Facebook's values-based trust score saw a substantial decline from 2018, while Snapchat and Instagram also experienced a decline in standings. This erosion of trust in social media continues from small losses in the 2018 study to much larger distrust amongst consumers in 2019. Social media brands now account for four of the nine least trusted brands in Canada.   Guest: Dr Saul Klein Dean and Professor of Marketing & International Business, Gustavson School of Business at the University of Victoria

Welcome to the Design Thinking podcast! I'm Dawan Stanford, your host. David Dunne, Professor and Director of MBA Programs at the University of Victoria's Gustavson School of Business, joins me today. David and I were introduced by Paolo Korre, who you may remember from an earlier episode of the show! We'll chat today about a range of subjects, including the use of design thinking in redesigning an MBA program. As you'll learn today, David's background in experience and marketing helped to lead him to design thinking. When he returned to school intending to become a professor, he found himself deeply interested in student-centered methods of teaching. He worked in design on the side, taking sabbaticals to spend time with designers and in design schools. Design thinking is a practitioner's art, and it takes experience with it to really make the methods your own. This applies both to my own journey and David's, and we'll explore the concept today in our conversation. We'll also talk about the struggle to help students to make methods their own, rather than only learning the methods. David and I talk about helping people to achieve the ability to think about how they're thinking. He recommends meditation as a powerful tool to reach this space of metacognition, and suggests the book Why Buddhism Is True. David also teaches students about cognitive biases and runs exercises to help them discover which biases are most prevalent in their teams. We'll also dig into his book, and what designers or people on design pathways can learn from it. He'll explain the three tensions that he sees in a design thinking process: inclusion, disruption, and perspective. We'll also hear about the four models for how designers can respond to these tensions. Don't miss this deeply informative episode with a wonderful guest!   Learn More About Today's Guest David Dunne on LinkedIn Design Thinking at Work   In This Episode [01:18] — We hear about David's background, and how his experience in business and marketing helped to lead him to where he is today. Welcome to the Design Thinking podcast! I’m Dawan Stanford, your host. David Dunne, Professor and Director of MBA Programs at the University of Victoria’s Gustavson School of Business, joins me today. David and I were introduced by Paolo Korre, who you may remember from an earlier episode of the show! We’ll chat today about a range of subjects, including the use of design thinking in redesigning an MBA program. As you’ll learn today, David’s background in experience and marketing helped to lead him to design thinking. When he returned to school intending to become a professor, he found himself deeply interested in student-centered methods of teaching. He worked in design on the side, taking sabbaticals to spend time with designers and in design schools. Design thinking is a practitioner’s art, and it takes experience with it to really make the methods your own. This applies both to my own journey and David’s, and we’ll explore the concept today in our conversation. We’ll also talk about the struggle to help students to make methods their own, rather than only learning the methods. David and I talk about helping people to achieve the ability to think about how they’re thinking. He recommends meditation as a powerful tool to reach this space of metacognition, and suggests the book Why Buddhism Is True. David also teaches students about cognitive biases and runs exercises to help them discover which biases are most prevalent in their teams. We’ll also dig into his book, and what designers or people on design pathways can learn from it. He’ll explain the three tensions that he sees in a design thinking process: inclusion, disruption, and perspective. We’ll also hear about the four models for how designers can respond to these tensions. Jeannie and Adam uncover the science behind consistently great customer service with Mark Colgate, author of The Science of Service. Get customer service down to a science The problem with customer service is not making it great, but making it consistently great. It is impossible to make people do, think and feel the same things. What is great for one customer may be terrible for the next, or simply may not work out the same way in every situation. So how can we know our service is always great for every customer? And more importantly, how do we hold employees accountable for this? “You can't tell someone they are accountable. They will reject that." -Mark Colgate However impossible this may sound, Mark Colgate, Ph.D has it down to a science! [3:23] Mark shares his F.A.M.E model so you can dig in and develop your framework. [6:53] One big key to consistent service is giving customers cognitive control. Here’s how that works. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #639 - Host: Mitch Joel. I've had the pleasure of knowing Dan Pontefract for some time. I've also been (more than) slightly intimidated by him (and his smarts). Dan has a big, big brain (and he knows how to use it). He's the bestselling author of three book: The Purpose Effect, Flat Army and his recently published, Open To Think. He's the Chief Envisioner of TELUS Transformation Office, where he helps organizations and leaders looking to improve all facets of the "future of work," including employee engagement, leadership development, collaborative behaviours, organizational purpose, digital transformation and corporate culture. On this episode, we crack open his latest book, Open To Think, and discuss how leaders should slow down, get more creative in their thinking, and where better decisions come from.
