In the face of our ever-changing working environments, the stories we tell ourselves will change the way we see the world. Focusing on our strengths and finding meaning in what we do will unlock our best selves and allow us to lead and succeed even when the going gets rough, even when it seems like success and integrity are at odds. In this episode, Gautam Mukunda is joined by serial entrepreneur, author, and co-founder of the Happiness Studies Academy, Tal Ben-Shahar, and blog writer and author Eric Barker to discuss how creating a meaningful narrative can change our experience. “One of the biggest insights of all of social psychology is that the situation is often more predictive of behavior than individual personality traits. What if you could gain control in the exact moment you feel like you’re losing control? COVID-19 is still in full swing. What we are dealing with is unprecedented. Chances are, while you’re reading this, you’re under quarantine. There are still many questions left unanswered which can lead to many feelings of uncertainty. With that uncertainty, taking care of yourself has never been more important—specifically, taking care of your mental health during this pandemic. Amidst the uncertainty, if we can find a sense of personal control, forward progress, and a clear headspace, we’ll be setting ourselves up for a huge advantage once this storm clears. Below are 5 books to help you do just that. 1. Barking Up The Wrong Tree by Eric Barker - The surprising science behind why everything you know about success is (mostly) wrong This is my favorite book I’ve ever read on success. It’s straight-talk. It’s to the point. It’s nuanced. It’s well researched. And it’s entertaining. It puts you in a powerful frame of mind and puts you in control. My favorite takeaway: “Self compassion is better than self confidence.” Learning to have compassion for yourself is one of the greatest skills you could ever develop. 2. Ultralearning by Scott H. Young - master hard skills, outsmart the competition, and accelerate your career What if you could become fluent in a new language in less than 3 months? Or learn how to paint like a pro in less than 30 days, or even build your own video-game? In Ultralearning, you’ll discover you can do just that. Scott H. Young not only shows that you can master very difficult skills, but provides the framework to become an “ultralearner.” (PS, I’m practicing the techniques in the book right now to learn how to play Fur Elise on the piano—even though I’ve never taken piano lessons and I don’t know how to read notes) My favorite takeaway: The quickest and most effective way to learn is through “directness”—being in the game. Getting on the court. And being okay with messing up. 3. The War of Art by Steven Pressfield - break through the blocks and win your inner creative battles For any creative-type, this book is a MUST read. It helps you break past the limiting beliefs and BS your brain sneaks into your head space. The core concept Steve Pressfield talks about that holds us back from getting our work done is a little thing known as “resistance.” Resistance is what gets in the way of our most important things, and you break it by “turning pro.” My favorite takeaway: The professional knows that success, like happiness, comes as a byproduct of work. Do the work for the sake of the work itself. And let the success (or not) come of its own accord. 4. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer Stone by JK Rowling Yes, I just barely dropped Harry Potter in a list of nonfiction books. But trust me on this, it is deliberate. Through stressful times, I think it’s important to have some sort of release valve. Harry Potter could represent any fiction, but, particularly, I love how Harry is the underdog through so much of the story and how he gets many uncertain situations. My favorite takeaway: At a meta-level, the writing in Harry Potter is so freaking fantastic! The opening of this book is my favorite opening of any book I’ve ever read. Just read the first page and see how much information JK Rolling is able to portray in a few sentences. It’s incredible. 5. Feeling Good by David D. Burns As I asked at the beginning, what if you could gain control in the exact moment you feel like you’re losing control? This book is for just that. Feeling Good has had more impact on my mood than any other book I’ve read in years. It is an amazingly practical book for feeling, well, “good,” regardless of the wild external stimuli we deal with (aka, the things that come from “life”). It is filled with tools and techniques to help you stay mentally and emotionally sharp. My favorite takeaway: The key to changing the negative self-talk isn’t through forcing positive thoughts, it’s in first recognizing the thought, and then practicing talking back. It’s not just in “thinking happy thoughts.” It’s noticing the thought, and then literally calling it out. Recognizing why it’s BS. In times of uncertainty, health (both physically and mentally) is more important than ever. I hope one or all of these books help you a ton. In closing, what amazing books have you read recently? What book would you add to the list?

So far no one has challenged Laurie on her premise that work is broken. Until today. Eric Barker is the author of the bestselling book, Barking Up The Wrong Tree, and he believes that issues with managing people and organizing them to accomplish things is a perennial challenge. In fact, he doesn’t believe work is broken because it was never fixed in the first place. Dive in with Laurie and Eric in this stimulating conversation about the state of work. Eric explains why he doesn’t think work is broken, and it’s because he believes it was never fixed in the first place. From technology changes to cultural changes, work is a perennial problem, and you might be inclined to agree with him on this point. Aside from loving the title of his book, it was also Laurie's favorite non-fiction book of 2017. She asks him a pointed question about success. There are many misconceptions, so you might want to check your own beliefs about what success at works really means. Is it the quality of work? Is it the quantity? Does success in one department look the same as success in another? What about from one manager to the next, and personality conflicts? Eric tackles these tough topics and more. Eric shares something EVERY job-searcher should know when they go into an interview. You see, peer pressure isn’t just something that affects teenagers. It affects us at every age, and the most insidious part of it according to Eric is that we don’t even realize it. What is ‘learned helplessness’ at work? It’s when employees don’t have a sense of agency and felt like they actually could make choices, even exercise a single choice. It turns employees into victims, and Eric gives some very solid steps you can take today to pull yourself up from that position. Volunteering can change your life. It’s true, but why? Eric and Laurie talk about the different thing you can do, and it’s not just about helping others. It’s about changing your sense of worth and identity. You aren’t your job. You are a person and we, as people, can easily get caught in destructive loops. And don’t worry; you don’t need to volunteer for 50 hours a week. You can do it for as little as 2 hours and feel the effects. The Venn Diagram of happiness and success definitely overlap, but not completely. Eric and Laurie investigate what it really means when the two overlap, and the tricky areas where they don’t. Does your work environment allow you to do what you do best? Or what if you’re happy with your job but not successful? What’s in store for you when you’re outside of Venn’s sweet spot? Let’s get one thing straight – if you’re going to fix work, you’ll have to start by fixing yourself. This concept can get VERY woo-woo when you listen to some of the inspirational speakers out there. They think they can make change by ‘whispering a few words’ in your ears. Laurie isn’t big on that. Mindfulness and meditation are good, no doubt, but she and Eric have a deep discussion about what kind of self-help is really needed. By the way… it’s your fault. You can’t underestimate the importance of relationships in work and life. So much of the unhappiness in the world is caused by loneliness. Eric lays out some scenarios. Do any of these sound familiar to you in your life? If you’re going to invest in anything, invest in relationships. Life offers so much – but time is limited, so every day you have to wake up and make choices. Unfortunately, many of us choose to try to do it all. We have massive ambitions and take massive action but, at the end of the day, we don't feel like we actually got anything done. Instead of trying to go wide, we have the opportunity to go deep; to be selective about what we choose to learn, have, and do. To help you take advantage of that opportunity, we are sharing this conversation with Eric Barker, author of Barking Up the Wrong Tree: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Success Is (Mostly) Wrong. We recorded this conversation as part of our monthly ONE Thing webinar series. Every month, we feature an incredible author so that you can learn directly from them and ask questions. It’s usually the rule breakers who turn into millionaire entrepreneurs. Insurance sales people would make successful Navy Seals. Nice guys don’t finish last. These are just a few of the latest findings from behavioral science that Eric Barker, founder of the blog Barking Up The Wrong Tree, and author of The Wall Street Journal bestseller Barking Up The Wrong Tree: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Success Is (Mostly) Wrong, references to redefine success. Through extensive research and narratives, Barker provides guidance on how to both identify signature strengths, and how we can turn weaknesses into strengths by placing yourself in environments that will reward your uniqueness in order to be optimally happy, productive, and successful in your career.
Time stamped show notes: [00:06] Introduction to Eric Barker, from Barking Up The Wrong Tree [00:32] His book just came out. Purpose is to dispel myths of success. [2:14] Before the explosion of the internet information was harder to come by, but the sources were more legitimate. [3:23] Eric wrote for Disney and Fox. [5:21] Everybody talks about being more confident, but there is a problem with too much confidence that no one addresses. [6:30] People can do just as well without the downside of narcissism on the Buddhist concept of self-compassion [6:43] Self-compassion has all the benefits of self-confidence [8:07] The problem with being focused on being confident is that confidence is contingent on achieving the goals. [8:34] Self-compassion means that you will see things realistically and you're going to have self-compassion when things don't go well. [10:39] Believing that you're “the best” creates an imbalance of who you think you are and who think people are [11:12] Confidence impresses people, but doesn't make you likeable [12:05] Biggest struggle for Eric at the moment: work life balance [13:45] Collapsing metric – measuring success in life based on one thing (money, job, etc.) [19:05] Key: producing content that is valuable to readers [20:27] Give people something they can really use [24:23] People are going to demand more filters [25:48] How he keeps deadlines and enjoys life. [27:54] Framework. Longest time he spends on a blog post. Shortest time he spends on a blog post. [30:01] He was reluctant to produce original content because of how long it takes to produce. [30:48] Things he would like to change in the future/ get some leverage and increase the mission and help more people: ancillary tasks & personal things [35:23] Success is a subjective term. We can describe it ourselves [35:29] Often success is a two part thing: (1) know who you are & signature strengths and knowing what your intensifiers are [36:21] Intensifiers: qualities that are bad, but in the right circumstances can be good [37:09] (2) picking the right pawn – finding an environment that rewards your strengths and intensifiers [41:47] Research: If a top analyst left the company alone he was no longer top analyst at his new company. If he brought his team with him/her, he was top analyst in new company. Three key points: People can do just as well without the downside of narcissism on the Buddhist concept of self-compassion. Confidence impresses people, but doesn't make you likeable Give people something they can really use. Product content that is valuable to readers Success is a two part thing:(1) knowing who you are & signature strengths and knowing what your intensifiers are; and (2) picking the right pawn – finding an environment that rewards your strengths and intensifiers Last Question: Check out his book or blog. In this episode we ask what really produces success by looking at what separates truly successful people from the rest, we examine many common and conflicting “success maxims” and look at what the data actually says really works, we dig deep into the vital importance of knowing yourself and your own strengths, look at the power of aligning your work with your environment, and discuss the dangers of constantly overcommitting your time with Eric Barker. Eric Barker is the creator of the blog “Barking Up The Wrong Tree” - with over 290,000 subscribers. His work is syndicated by Time Magazine, Business Insider and he has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and more. Just recently, his new book Barking up the Wrong Tree: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Success Is (Mostly) Wrong was named a Wall Street Journal Bestseller. The future is already here, it's just not evenly distributed How Eric took a myth-busters approach to success maxims and figured out what really works Vital importance of knowing yourself and your strengths Why you need to align with a context and environment that rewards your skills What really produces success? What separates the very successful from the rest of us? We take a lot of the common maxims we hear that conflict about success and look at what the DATA actually says about them What are intensifiers and why should you know about them? When are negatives positives? How can you know when it’s important? Context really reveals when and how these maxims work or not Do nice guys really finish last? What does the science say? Why, in some contexts, being a jerk can pay off (and when it can backfire) Strategies to improve self knowledge and know yourself more deeply Pursuing your passion doesn't always lead to happiness, but pursuing what you’re good at more frequently does lead to happiness Research is clear - focus on what you’re good at - and find a way to compensate for your weaknesses. Understanding your strengths allows you to plan the right way to go about achieving your big picture goals Deluding yourself is often worst situation of all and you frequently end up working against yourself Do quitters never win? Should we quit or persevere? How do we think about Grit? The vital importance of opportunity cost - we only have so much time in the day - we have to focus in on the biggest things Strategically quitting is not the opposite of grit, but enables you to focus in on the most important things People consistently over-commit their time and don’t understand how little time they have Find a balance - look at what’s producing results - show grit with those things - things that aren’t producing results Why you should absolutely dedicate 5-10% of your time to what Peter Simms calls “little bets” The key litmus test on whether or not you should apply GRIT or QUIT What research reveals (Richard Wiseman in the UK) on how you can improve your luck! How do we “walk the tightrope” between confidence and delusion? How often should we “believe in ourselves”? Confidence as a whole is a problematic paradigm, confidence follows success, it doesn’t lead to success - it has NO effect on outcomes, only impact on trying to build confidence is that it increases narcissism Learn more about your ad choices. Eric is a former philosophy student and screenwriter and an accomplished writer and researcher. He is best known for his blog Barking Up The Wrong Tree, which has been around since 2009. Much of the blog’s popularity is due to how useful it is to people and there are currently just under 300,000 subscribers to Eric’s newsletter. His blog topics typically revolve around science-based answers and expert insight on how to be awesome at life. I shared a post of Eric's on my FB recently. The post followed 81 valedictorians after graduation to see where they ended up. It sparked an interesting debate in the comments and so I decided to invite Eric on the show to talk about his findings.
Ari often refers to one of his favorite blogs, “Barking Up The Wrong Tree” and on this episode, he starts the show referring to an article there entitled “How to Make Life Magical,” and as you can tell my the title, it’s about how to live a magical life. But this particular list is all science-based, so it merits attention. In typical style, Ari and Nick’s banter is almost as interesting as the article itself - almost. Nike’s quest to break the 2-hour marathon barrier. Human performance is a large part of what’s behind the quest to live a magical life - and one of the current barriers being undertaken in a quest to increase human performance is the quest to break the 2 hour marathon barrier. Currently, Dennis Kimetto of Kenya holds the world record for the fastest marathon at 2 hours, 2 minutes, and 57 seconds. But Nike is pouring tons of resources into pushing past that 2-hour mark. On this episode Ari and Nick chat about their efforts. One of the most amazing Olympic races ever: The 2008 Men’s Swim Relay As Ari and Nick chat about the attempts Nike is making to break the 2-hour marathon barrier, Nick brought up the video of the 2008 Beijing Olympics Men's 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay. He says it’s one of the greatest races of all time and highlights how Jazon Lezak, a veteran swimmer from the USA used the wake of his opponent, Alain Bernard to propel himself forward, leaving him a reserve of energy from which to draw to edge out Bernard in the final second of the race. Pretty cool stuff - and you can hear the guys talk about it on this episode. Featured Links Mentioned On This Episode [0:03] www.Beta.GetLeverage.com - sign up for the Dashboard waitlist. Eric Barker is founder of the blog, Barking Up The Wrong Tree. He provides science based answers and expert insight on how to be awesome in life. His newest work is “Barking Up the Wrong Tree: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Success Is (Mostly) Wrong”. What happens to valedictorians after graduation? Valedictorians are great at following rules and not breaking outside the box. This gets them far in school but not too far in the real world. Studies have proven most who excel in school end up in structured non-pioneering jobs. Most entrepreneurs don’t follow the rules of school or society. They are also generally classified as creative people and therefore have huge obstacles to maneuver through. Most teachers say they love creative children but research shows those are the students hated most. They don’t sit still or follow direction well. Luckily, In today’s era it is easier than ever for those creative types to succeed. The internet has given ideas the opportunity to spread quickly and easier than ever before. With ideas easily being spread, so are negative (and positive) influences. We are always more influenced by those around us than we realize: work colleagues, friends, people at social events… whoever you choose to surround yourself with will have a tremendous influence on your life. Learning to accept failure is just as important as surrounding yourself with the right crowd. New opportunities and innovation springs from a person’s ability to fail. Doing everything the same way every time, will always get the same results. Pushing boundaries is critical otherwise you’re not working toward expertise, you are just practicing redundant behavior. Everyone loves to hear about the 25 year old billionaire because it doesn’t seem like there was much work involved but when you peel back the layers, you see the grit necessary in getting to their success. One example of grit and sustaining the right mindset is a research project Eric did with Navy Seals. What stood out the most was their optimism. They have short term focus that keeps them optimistically moving forward. Personal, persistent and pervasive are the three P’s that if kept positive, you can produce optimism and grit. Navy Seals don’t look at a 60 day program and say, “I can have no sleep or food for 60 days.” Instead they say, “I can get to lunch” and then after lunch they say, “I can get to dinner.” It is a day-to-day survival mode rather than big picture. The big picture is too daunting. Michael and Eric end the podcast discussing what Eric calls “the buffet.” How close are you to buffet food? How much are your friends eating? Are you facing the food, or are you facing away? All these factors play a part in how your life is modeled. In this episode of Trend Following Radio: The entrepreneurial feeling What makes valedictorians succeed Filter leaders Obstacles for creative people Structure of story telling Failure tolerance Creating meaningful mentorships
