Send us a textThe only thing that matters in our lives is our relationship to other people. WOAH dude, that's profound.Eric Barker joins me to talk about relationships, the subject of his book, Plays Well With Others, where together we learn, bust myths, and see how they shape everything from happiness to health.Want to predict survival a year after a heart attack? Check your friendships. Seriously. Relationships matter more than anything. Spouses are great, but friendships? They're the real game-changer, backed by Nobel Prize-winning research.Friends are 100% choice, and they bring joy. Want to be more ambitious, fit, or positive? Spend time with people like that. But beware—habits are contagious. Secondhand smoke is bad, but having smoking friends? Worse, because you might start, too. It's not just about having friends; it's about community. Five friends who know each other? That's a support system. Instant happiness boost.Social media—connection tool or time-sucking black hole? Use it to strengthen real-life relationships, not just scroll away your "buddy budget."And hey, our spouses are important relationships too. Want to spark ethical change? Encourage them to be who they want to be. Less nagging, more nudging. Want a fairytale marriage? Go slay a dragon together—aka do exciting things to create shared joy.Deep relationships boil down to time and vulnerability. Eric even shares how he applied this himself. Want organic ways to make more time for friends? Stick around to end it may involve the organic vegetable aisle. What's Inside:Are friendships life or death!?Leveraging social media for real-life connection and not endless doom scrolling. In this episode, we reflect on the importance of vulnerability and kindness in fostering meaningful relationships, both personal and professional. Our guest, James Rhee, author of Red Helicopter, recounts an impactful kindergarten experience that taught him the value of goodwill and sharing. He likens the power of kindness to the magical world of "Harold in the Purple Crayon," emphasizing our ability to create goodwill through our actions. We then delve into a conversation with Eric Barker, renowned for his book Plays well with Others. Eric reveals surprising insights about our relationships, especially how "frenemies" tend to cause more stress than outright enemies. He discusses ways to engage with difficult people empathetically, and he underscores the importance of vulnerability in building strong, supportive communities. The episode wraps up with actionable advice from Todd's latest book, The Brave Habit, focusing on how to cultivate brave teams through healthy conflict, protection of teammates, and the giving and receiving of feedback.Key Learnings:Vulnerability is Crucial: Being open and honest, even when it's difficult, is key to forming genuine relationships.Goodwill is Powerful: Small acts of kindness can create lasting positive impacts.Manage Ambivalent Relationships: "Frenemies" can be more stressful than outright enemies, so it's vital to manage those relationships carefully.Engage in Healthy Conflict: Effective teams don't avoid conflict—they engage in it healthily and constructively.Empathy and Community: Building communities requires patience, empathy, and a focus on face-to-face interactions rather than digital ones.Get full interviews and daily content in the Daily Creative app at DailyCreative.appMentioned in this episode:NEW BOOK! It's the greatest productivity debate of our time: how do we achieve work-life balance? Or maybe the real debate should be: is work-life balance even possible? Eric Barker, the author of Barking Up the Wrong Tree and now Plays Well With Others, doesn't think work-life balance is truly achievable. At least, not if you want the best possible results in a given field. The problem, he says, is that most of live an unbalanced life by accident. Because of the internet and the rapidly increasing pace of everything from the news cycle to the way we socialise, we're all doing too much of something, and not enough of something else. It's overwhelming, and we're constantly playing catchup. Eric's solution is to abandon balance, but to do it on purpose. Decide what you want to be really, really good at it, and accept that you won't be world-class in your other pursuits. Eric also shares why he sets a five-hour timer at the start of every work day, how he deals with contradictions in his own writing, and how he developed his sense of humour. **BEST OF 2022** It's the greatest productivity debate of our time: how do we achieve work-life balance? When it comes to productivity, you are your own worst enemy. Nobody knows how to trick you into procrastinating or cutting corners quite like you do. You know all of your own strengths, weaknesses and thought patterns. But if you know yourself better than anyone else does, that also means you are your own best resource for productivity tools, hacks, tips and tactics. Writer Eric Barker knows how important specificity is, especially when it comes to productivity. So while he loves poring over productivity books, courses, videos and articles, he knows that ultimately, it's all down to him. Enter the “Book of Me.” Eric wants you to write your own productivity “bible”, specific to your needs and habits. If you know you don't work well when you're hungry, put it in the book. How much deep work do you get done on the average work day? And I mean DEEP work - completely focused, distraction-free work… An hour? Two?Author Eric Barker does five. Yep, five - every single day. But how does he know for sure? Eric uses a simple countdown timer every day to track his most important work: the kind of work that doesn't allow for a quick email check or a scroll through Instagram. When he gets up to go to the bathroom, he pauses the timer. When he needs to check email, he pauses the timer. And when he just needs a break, he pauses the timer. It might sound a bit pedantic at first, but Eric knows all too well just how easily we can trick ourselves out of hard work, and he doesn't want to take any chances. And while it might sound intense, it's not just a productivity tip: it's also a means of preventing burnout. When the timer hits zero, Eric knows he's done five good hours of focused work, and knows it's time to relax and unwind.Connect with Eric on Twitter or LinkedInYou can find the full interview here: Eric Barker on his Five-Hour Rule and deliberate work-life imbalance***My new book Time Wise is out now. This week's conversation is with Eric Barker, a former Hollywood screen-writer turned author whose dedicated following of over half a million people look to Eric for his (often counter-intuitive) insights and research-backed advice on how to be great at life. In 2017, Eric penned his Wall Street Journal bestseller Barking Up the Wrong Tree, which reveals the extraordinary science behind what actually determines success and most importantly, how anyone can achieve it.However, over the last several years Eric pivoted to taking a deep dive into the science of relationships and recently published his newest bestseller, Plays Well with Others: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Relationships Is (Mostly) Wrong. And that's why I was so excited to sit down with Eric – if you've been following this podcast, you know I'm a big believer that relationships are foundational to exploring potential and achieving our very best… no one does it alone… through relationships, we become. Mark speaks with Eric Barker, Wall Street Journal best selling author and former Hollywood screenwriter. Eric left Hollywood and scripted a new challenge: organizing the counterintuitive nature of relationships, vulnerability, and cognitive biases. Today, Commander Divine speaks with Eric Barker, former Hollywood screenwriter, speaker, and best selling author. In this episode, Eric discusses the shocking research he uncovered surrounding relationships, vulnerability, and cognitive biases - all detailed in his newest book titled, Plays Well With Others. Key Takeaways: Do you have friends? Do you smoke? The two biggest determinants of your mortality one year after a heart attack. Eric shares the surprising science by Robert Garfield at University of Pennsylvania detailing how not being open and vulnerable in relationships leads to prolonged minor illnesses and even increased lethality from a second heart attack. He also shares effective strategies for forming deep friendships to counteract these data. Friendships are our most coveted relationships, taking the cake over our romantic partners (by 5%). While romantic partnerships are backed by a legal document, as are colleagues with job descriptions, friendships are different. They’re indefinite… which might be just what makes real ones so special. Think about The Scary Rule, which Eric coined. If it feels scary, say it. Start small, but opening up and sharing something that could be used against you is what builds trust, says Diego Gambetta’s research. It starts with you. The placebo effect is in your hormones. Contrary to popular belief, the placebo effect isn’t just in your head… it’s actually in your endorphins, which are what carry the signal of the placebo effect. If we shut down the exchange of endorphins, we lose the mystical placebo. What’s more, placebo effect goes up when we experience trust in not only the medication and treatment, but in the doctor’s bedside manner and empathy. Your first impressions barely beat a coin flip. It turns out, 70% of first impressions are drawn correctly. The trouble is, that 30% of assumptions are what create unhelpful biases, the ones we must confront and try to unlearn.
Some of what we think we know about relationships is actually... wrong. So many of the tried and true axioms that are passed along are simply not helpful. We need to better understand what the research truly says if we want to be better collaborators, better leaders, and better human beings. https://bakadesuyo.com (Eric Barker) is the best-selling author of a new book Plays Well With Others. Love – Casanova said, “love is three-quarters curiosity.” That curiosity creates deep knowledge… And that helps you build what researcher John Gottman calls, a “love map.” “Everyone asks how you got together; nobody asks how you stayed together. And it's the latter that is often the real achievement to be proud of.” Your WHO: Take your health, for example. The Framingham study showed that drinking, smoking, and obesity are all quite contagious. If someone you consider a friend becomes obese, your likelihood of obesity increases by 53%. And if the friendship is mutual, the number rises to 171%. "Friends are only there because you want them to be." "Friends make us happier than any other relationship." How to build deeper relationships with friends? Time Be vulnerable -- "Relationships move at the speed of vulnerability." How to make your relationship with your partner better? Do exciting things together - Be proactive Leverage emotional contagion - Associate feelings with events Bill Perkins - "Create memory dividends." You need to learn and grow together John Gottman asks couples to tell their stories... The ones that stick together celebrate the difficulties Profiling - “Humans are prone to seeing meaning when there is none.” There's a fundamental reason that astrologers outnumber astronomers. Emotionally we want a feeling of control over the world around us. We desperately need the world to at least seem to make sense. And for that, we need a story, even if it isn't true. Confirmation bias: what is it? And what are the 3 ways to resist it? Feel accountable Distance before decision Consider the opposite Lying — how can you spot a liar? The average college student lies in about a third of conversations. For adults, it's 1 in 5. In online dating, 81% of profiles deviate from the truth. And we are terrible at detecting lies, averaging a 54% success rate. So how do we become better at understanding if someone is lying? This system takes patience (so it isn't useful for little lies but can be powerful for bigger issues). “The science overwhelming recommended a nuanced and sophisticated method humans have never tried in the past 5,000 years when attempting to detect lies: being nice. Never be a bad cop, be a friendly journalist. You have to get them to like you. To open up. To talk a lot. And to make a mistake that reveals deception. Don't accuse. Be curious. Optimism – Shawn Achor's Ted Talk (so funny and fast). MET Life saw such great results among happy salespeople that they tried an experiment: they started hiring people based on optimism. It turns out that the optimistic group outsold their more pessimistic counterparts by 19% in year one and 57% in year two. "Writing a book is like telling a joke and having to wait two years to know whether or not it was funny." —ALAIN DE BOTTON Eric writes to start his new book... We all want and need relationships — but you might be surprised to find out how little we actually know about them! This week, bestselling author Eric Barker joins us to talk about his newest book, Plays Well With Others, that takes a deep dive into friendships, marital relationships and every other kind of relationship to explore what we're doing right, where we could improve and how the pandemic has changed the way we look at our relationships. In this episode, you'll learn: Why friendships are the most important relationships we have. What science says we can do to build stronger friendships. How the way we fight with our spouse predicts the outcome of our relationship.
Eric Barker is not a people person. “Getting me to write a relationship book,” he says, “is like asking Godzilla to improve the infrastructure in your city.” But he did it anyway. Guided by leading social psychologists, Eric went on a journey to understand what he was getting wrong about relationships — and what he could do to turn things around. The result is “Plays Well With Others,” a guide to friendship, intimacy, loneliness, and belonging that our curator Daniel Pink says will “revitalize your life.” THIS AND THAT: Check out Eric's blog, “Barking Up the Wrong Tree” Try out Arthur Aron's intimacy building questions Download the Next Big Idea app
If I asked you to list all of the relationships in your life, we'd be here a while, wouldn't we?! From friendships to romances and everything in between. We're human, and God designed us to engage with others! That's why I'm so excited to share this insightful conversation with Eric Barker, the Internet's resident relationship expert. Of course, you know, I just had to ask him what made him decide to dive into the science of relationships in the first place, and his answer did not disappoint my friends! Listen in as Eric talks to us about how he challenged some of the age-old relationship advice we've all received with science and skepticism. And how that experience led him to more fulfilling friendships, love, and community. This is so, so good. Eric Barker is the author of The Wall Street Journal bestseller “Barking Up the Wrong Tree,” which has sold over half a million copies and been translated into 19 languages. It was even the subject of a question on “Jeopardy!” His new book, “Plays Well with Others,” was released earlier this month. Listen in to learn more about: What surprised Eric the most in his research for this book on relationships, [Hint: It has absolutely everything to do with friendships!] How to navigate negative and positive sentiment override and how they impact our relationships Productive ways to begin an argument or hard discussion that preserves both parties' humanity in the conversation Favorite quotes: ~Friendships make us happier than any other relationship yet friendships don't get the kind of respect or attention because friendship is completely voluntary. ~ We are just not that good at reading others. Human beings in general default to trust and cooperation. We do want information but not all the information. In some ways it is our brain trying to protect us. ~ Screaming matches only lead to divorce 40% of the time. The issue is that you scream when you care and when you stop screaming you stop caring. What precedes divorce is living parallel lives where you don't interact and don't yell and scream, because you don't even care anymore. ~ The four things that are more predictive in divorce are all to do with how you talk, how you communicate. They are - Criticism, Defensiveness, Stonewalling and Contempt. ~ Friendship Is fantastic, makes us happier than anything else but there's a whole new level of synergy when friends become a group, a community.
