The pleasures of the chase. The joy of the discovering. Humans LOVE a challenge - especially one with a treasure at the end of it. Good news for perfume lovers: aromatic materials can be the most challenging and enticing treasures of all. For episode 16 of Perfume on the Radio we are joined by experts in the chasing, and the uncovering, of magical botanicals, aromatics, and landscapes.Chris Kemp (writer, 'Floating Gold', among others) talks about ambergris, what it is, how people find it. Mason Hainey (Mizu) talks about orris root, how it's processed and what it brings to perfumery. Carlos Morera and Nina Mross (Cactus Store) talk about two very VERY sought after plants, and the impact of human desire on the environment. Matthew Teutimez (Environmental Director Kizh Nation / Gabrieleno) talks about the relationship to the land, and botany, from the Kizh Nation perspective. Recently I have been working on electronic music and completed four tracks. For some reason I started listening to a lot of Jacques Greene, Kelly Lee Owens, Surgeons Girl and Beatrice Dillon. There’s something very warm and deep about their music which was not something I thought possible with electronica. It’s a hard genre to … Continue reading "Electronica"

This week features music from U.K.
Artist and producer Beatrice Dillon’s new piece for ASSEMBLY, infraordinary, combines installation and performance, in which specially composed sounds are triggered using the system’s Kinect camera, alongside a live controlled sound mix of the street. Inspired by writer Georges Perec’s concept of the ‘infra-ordinary’ - taking account of the micro events of the everyday - the performance attempts to examine and reframe the rhythmic patterns of the street outside. Pedestrians, traffic, roadworks, protest; the corner of Somerset House where Waterloo Bridge meets Embankment is a hive of often unpredictable activity and noise. Acknowledging and working with this to define a compositional framework, Marclay invited a series of guests to collaborate in bringing the outdoors inside for an evolving series of electro-acoustic performances. Beatrice Dillon is an artist and music producer who has produced solo and collaborative releases across Boomkat Editions, Hessle Audio, The Trilogy Tapes, PAN, Timedance and Where To Now? Recent performances include Barbican Centre, Tokyo’s wwwX, MUTEK Montreal, Dekmantel, Documenta Athens, Cairo’s Masåfåt Festival, Norway’s Insomnia and Documenta Athens. With a background in fine art, Beatrice has produced sound and music commissions for Outlands Network, Lisson Gallery, Études Paris, AND Festival, Somerset House and has collaborated with visual artists and choreographers across ICA, TATE, Southbank Centre, York Mediale, Centre d’Art Contemporain Geneva, MACVAL Paris, Nasher Center Dallas and Mona Tasmania amongst others. She was the recipient of Wysing Arts Centre’s artist residency, is a resident at Somerset House Studios and presents a show on NTS Radio. Christian Marclay’s ambitious and accomplished practice explores the juxtaposition between sound, photography, video and sculpture. His installations display provocative musical and visual landscapes and have been included in exhibitions around the world including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Venice Biennale, Centre Pompidou Paris and Kunsthaus Zurich. More recently, he exhibited The Clock at the Tate Modern (debuted at White Cube in 2010) – an artwork created from thousands of edited fragments, from a vast range of films to create a 24-hour, single-channel video. Podcast produced by Reduced Listening for Somerset House Studios ASSEMBLY Production by Music Hackspace and sound system by Call & Response, with sound and interaction programming from Black Shuck and Preverbal Studio. Lighting design by KitMapper. ASSEMBLY is supported by PRS Foundation’s The Open Fund, The Adonyeva Foundation and the John. S Cohen Foundation.
It is the 50th episode of Line Noise. We started in January 2016: David Bowie had just died, we were all depressed and it took Matmos' washing machine to cheer us up. Over the years we have interviewed everyone from Jlin to to Photek. But for our 50th episode we want to ask: What’s the point of Line Noise? What's the point of music journalism as a whole? Can you talk intelligently about electronic music if you don’t go to night clubs? Can you enjoy music for young people if you are the wrong side of 40? Line Noise co-founder Philip Sherburne guests, alongside Ben Cardew and Braqueberry for this special edition. We also play some of the new artists who are exciting us for 2020 and beyond, with music from Mantra, Park Hye Jin, Beatrice Dillon, Velmondo, Yung Prado and Sharda. Track list Mantra - Embers Baltra and Park Hye Jin - Ahead of Time (edit) Beatrice Dillon - Workaround Two Velmondo - A Trenc D'alba Yung Prado - Gente Triste Sharda - Replay

C POWERS (CGI, Proper Trax, House of Gunt / Savannah, GA) Hailing from the great musical city of Atlanta, @cpowers has absorbed a multitude of musical idioms throughout his life. Born into a psychedelic family of deadheads, Cici heard a lot of synthscapes as a child which might explain his love for electronically made rhythmic music of all kinds. Starting his DJ career in the bedroom at the age of 11, C has since held down gigs in Chicago, London, Atlanta, and now in the moss covered and sun drenched Savannah, GA where he has been absorbed into the House of Gunt family as their DJ. Powers also holds his own monthly, MIX, at the end of every month in Savannah's Club One where Lady Chablis once graced the stage. This mix is a gift to you the listener! It came to fruition after a few trips around the lower southeast's thrift and record shops and is thus full of crackles. Recorded in one live take on a 2x1200 and 2xXDJ set up this mix is gas for the ass! The mix is an investigation of the acid and breakbeat driven music that Cici would hear on late night college radio stations, or at the Sparkles roller rink back in the late 90s and early 2000s. Somerset House Studio’s resident Beatrice Dillon presents Taut Line, a multi-channel sound installation co-commissioned in partnership with Abandon Normal Devices. The piece premiered at The Great Cave, Peak Cavern Derbyshire in September as part of the AND 2017 festival programme. At Somerset House, Dillon reconfigured the work for The Deadhouse, a rarely accessible underground tunnel running beneath the courtyard, clad with headstones dating from the 1600s, the remnants of a chapel that was formally located on the site. Time to put on your computer & electronic music caps. Fusing the instincts of two overseas composers, Beatrice Dillon & Rupert Clervaux, Two Changes (an album released through Paralaxe Editions) is a two-track experience like no other. From techno, to ambient, to industrial, to the jazz noir finishings of pocket trumpetist Eben Bull, Two Changes offers a little bit of everything with no shortage of spectacle, and occasionally, stupefaction. And so, after another pre-album preamble, concerning electronica and track length, @0:18:42 we explore and assess the inner-workings of Two Changes' only pieces, "The Same River Twice" and "A Different River Once." Join along! Continue reading
