In this episode, I am joined by your favorite theological troublemaker, Dr. Pete Enns, for a wide-ranging Q&A session where we tackle your burning questions from our SubStack communities (Odds & Enns and Process This). We delve into everything from understanding eternal punishment in Matthew 25, to the various ways divine presence is portrayed in Genesis, to what makes deconstruction a healthy or nihilistic approach, and whether Christianity can adapt to modern existential needs. We bring a blend of biblical scholarship, philosophical musings, and irreverent humor as we engage with your questions, delivering what we hope are at least "above average" answers. To get access to the entire conversation, submit your questions, and join live next time, join their SubStack communities, Odds & Enns and Process This. Want to hang with Pete & Tripp? In Part 2 of Ilia Delio's conversation with author and biblical scholar Peter Enns, we explore deeper dimensions of scripture—and how our understanding of it must evolve alongside us.Together, Ilia and Pete examine how the Bible is often misused as a political and cultural tool, and they ask: Can scripture still offer wisdom in a world facing ecological collapse, moral polarization, and spiritual disconnection? This episode approaches:The New Testament through the lens of change and complexityWhy fundamentalist readings distort the transformative power of scriptureThe psychological and planetary costs of static belief systemsWhether scripture itself is part of a larger religious and cosmic evolutionPete also shares where he looks for hope—and how embracing uncertainty may actually deepen our spiritual lives.ABOUT PETER ENNS“I think part of what it means for God to “reveal” himself is to keep us guessing, to come to terms with the idea that knowing God is also a form of not knowing God, of knowing that we cannot fully know, but only catch God in part—which is more than enough to keep us busy.”Peter Enns (Ph.D. Harvard University) is Abram S. Books are like buses. When you open up a book, it will take you to a new place. It will take you on a new adventure. Sometimes the book will take you on a journey of the imagination to a new country or a science fiction place. Sometimes the book will take you on a path of learning you've never explored before, and that path will lead you down other paths, and then those paths will lead you down even more paths, and you will be able to meander through information that delights your mind and opens you up to new ideas and ways of looking at the world. Books shape the way we think, feel, and show up in the world. They can even influence who we hang out with, who we agree or disagree with, and how we approach those agreements or disagreements. Books are important. They have just as much influence over us as people do because they are written by people with bias, people with their own programming, people with their own lived experience or lack thereof. Charlie Jones once wrote “Remember, you are the same today as you will be in five years, except for two things: the people you meet and the books you read. Choose both carefully.”When it comes to books about deconstruction, I've found some to be life-giving and hope-saturated, and I've found others to be depressing and hopeless. In today's episode, I talk about some of the books that have changed my life and my relationship with God. For the better! We couldn't be more excited about today's episode, and it's with someone we've wanted to get on the podcast for years — Peter Enns. Pete is a well-known bible scholar and is the Abram S. Clemens professor of Bible Studies at Eastern University in Pennsylvania. In recent years, Pete has become well known for several highly popular books, including How the Bible Actually Works, The Bible Tells Me So, and the book we discussed with him today: The Sin of Certainty. In addition to his research and writing, Pete co-hosts the podcast The Bible for Normal People. In The Sin of Certainty, Pete opens up about his own faith journey, including what he calls “uh-oh” moments — those moments that, as Pete says, “wreak havoc with our neatly arranged thoughts of God, the world, and our place in it.” He makes the argument that a faith preoccupied with correct thinking can quickly become exhausting as we try to fit our “uh-oh” moments into our previous ways of thinking and believing. Pete insists that there's a different way — the way of listening to our “uh-oh” moments and learning from them, even letting them change us — and finding our faith transform from a rigid certainty about God to a radical trust in God.We really think you're going to enjoy this conversation, and we're super grateful to Pete for coming on.

Moments of uncertainty and questioning our faith is a scary place to be. It's incredibly easy to feel lost and alone; not knowing who to talk to or where to start. The process of deconstructing, asking questions, is an incredibly common thing to walk through. So today we're talking to Pastor Matt Nelson about his journey of walking countless amounts of people through their own faith crisis moments and what it looks like to go through this process well. On top of Pastor Matt sharing what he's seen help people best engage this process, he also gives a list of additional resources that will help you rebuild your faith into something beautiful. The Bible is sort of like a means of grace. It's almost like it's not a sacrament, but it's almost like a sacrament. It's something you engage and by the act of engaging it and even struggling with it, you're actually communing with God in some way. — Pete Enns This is an honest and invigorating conversation with Dr. Peter Enns, scholar and author. Steve explores What is the Bible? How do we interpret the Bible in today's world? Controversial evangelical Bible scholar, popular blogger, podcast host of The Bible for Normal People, and author of The Bible Tells Me So and The Sin of Certainty, Dr. Peter Enns explains that the Bible is not an instruction manual or rule book but a powerful learning tool that nurtures our spiritual growth by refusing to provide us with easy answers but instead forces us to acquire wisdom. Is the Bible authoritative in our daily life and world events? What did God have in mind in offering us 66 books? This is a conversation that will disturb some of us and challenge others. It's time to re-think the Bible in light of the Bible becoming a weapon to beat up each other with. ABOUT PETER ENNS Dr. Peter Enns (PhD, Harvard University) is Abram S. Clemens professor of Biblical Studies at Eastern University, St. Davids, PA. He has taught courses at several other institutions including Harvard University, Fuller Theological Seminary, and Princeton Theological Seminary. In this week's episode, Ryan and Brian talk about the relevancy of the Bible. One of our listeners asked us about a book called "How the Bible Actually Works" by Peter Enns. So, Ryan and Brian take a look at the claims of the book, what they agree and disagree with, and what the means for everyone reading the Bible today. Hidden Gems: How deconstruction can help us find deeper meaning For most churches these days, the Old Testament is a collection of exciting and shocking stories for kids' Bible class. When we're older, we assume we've learned what the stories have to teach us and we hardly ever revisit them from an adult perspective. An unexpected upside of deconstruction can be that, when we DO re-think these OT stories, there are layers upon layers of meaning. The pastors start off talking about organizing by what we have, and not by what we lack. We need to be fed by Jesus, need to be free from an evaluation of ourselves all the time and just be living in this place of being with Jesus so that we can do whatever the Spirit leads us to do. A big interview between Jonny and Rachel on her views of the Bible: how to read it and engage with it, especially in community; dealing with patriarchy and colonialism that have mis-used the Bible; her own experience as a pastor; and some of her favorite theologians who engage with the Bible in a deep and yet relatable way. We end with a little Show and Tell: books to read, spiritual people who've influenced us, and celebrating meeting in person outside for our Sunday meetings. //Notes// How the Bible Actually Works by Pete Enns: https://peteenns.com/books/how-the-bible-actually-works/ Anselm on Celebrating Our Transhistorical Body: https://www.circleofhope.net/transhistorical/april-21-anselm/ Jesus, as a mother you gather your people to you: You are gentle with us as a mother with her children; Often you weep over our sins and our pride: tenderly you draw us from hatred and judgement. You comfort us in sorrow and bind up our wounds: in sickness you nurse us, and with pure milk you feed us. Jesus, by your dying we are born to new life: by your anguish and labour we come forth in joy. Despair turns to hope through your sweet goodness: through your gentleness we find comfort in fear. Your warmth gives life to the dead: your touch makes sinners righteous. Lord Jesus, in your mercy heal us: in your love and tenderness remake us. In your compassion bring grace and forgiveness: for the beauty of heaven may your love prepare us. The Same Sex Marriage in the CRC continues to rumble forward likely towards a split in the church. While Progressives major in stories of suffering and pain Conservatives like to talk about "Reformed Hermeneutics". They assert that the issue isn't isolated to this particular issue but it with the pattern of Scripture reading. I think they have a point. How we read the Bible continues to evolve and it is a standard point with Progressive Evangelicals. Peter Enns, former professor of Old Testament was featured on the Youtube Channel @God is Grey to discuss his book "How the Bible Actually Works". While Pete Enns and I may agree on a number of things I suspect the sum total of these assumptions about the Bible sort of blur it for people. For those who have been deeply formed by a more orderly sub-culture, who might wish to deviate in a few ways, this feels like a relief from tyranny. But what will be the cumulative impact of these changes as generations continue? I find the work of @Jonathan Pageau to actually be anticipating the impact of this blur further in. He notes patterns and subtly suggest how to navigate with these patterns. It's both a re-enchantment move AND a re-instantiation of the Biblical world in the lives of those who listen. I’ve got a very special guest for you this week. Professor Peter Enns, author of books that include The Sin of Certainty and How the Bible Actually Works (affiliate links), joins me for a discussion about the Bible, Christianity, love, trust, and the evolving nature of faith. I grew up with a very fundamentalist understanding of the Bible, and can relate to so many of the things that Pete writes and talks about, including the fear of getting our facts wrong and offending God. As Pete points out, that’s a pretty limiting view of God—that God can’t tolerate our honest efforts to interpret the Bible as best we can in light of our experience. Our discussion focuses on Christianity, but I think many of the issues apply across different religious traditions. I look forward to hearing your reactions.

“As one of my seminary professors said, “Reading the New Testament is like reading someone else's mail.” That might be the most valuable thing I ever learned in seminary. And now I pass it on to you, at a far lower cost.” Enns, Peter. How the Bible Actually Works (p. 254) On today's episode we...
The Bible has been the source of much debate and conflict. For millennia, the Bible has been cited and leveraged for conquest, violence and manipulation; and yet, those same texts have been used for social justice, human rights and to build strong communities of faith, hope and love. In today's episode, we take some time to consider How Did We Get Here in relation to The Bible. What is the purpose of these ancient texts, and who decided what was in and what was out? How does divine inspiration work, and how should we interpret this seemingly nuanced text? “What is the title of Tricia’s next (fifth) book?” Despite her brother’s teasing, Tricia came to this podcast ready to present the new title of her new book in this episode! The new title is, “This Book Is For You!” Subtitle: Loving God’s Words in Your Actual Life. Tricia describes the book as ideal for anyone who has ever thought the Bible is boring, or anyone who honestly admits, “I know I’m suppose to like the Bible, but I just don’t.” She describes the purpose of this book as being about “falling in love with the Bible in your actual life. It’s about the reality that you don’t have to be a monk or nun, or one who can step away to a place of enlightenment or a person of great discipline, or a person who isn’t in the carpool lane late and doesn’t have mismatched socks on her kids!” The theme of this book is to help us learn what the Bible really says and how it still very much applies in this century, this place, and in our “actual lives.” Tricia talks about living according to what the Bible teaches with an awareness that sometimes we have gotten it wrong; we make assumptions or believe very strongly about things that we believe are important, and yet, we may not learn until later in our lives that, actually, we were wrong. It has happened many times in history among Christ-followers who thought they were doing what God wanted. What would happen if we open our minds as we read the Bible and ask God to be “the Lord over our ignorance?” When we are sure we are right but we might be wrong…what should we do as people who follow Jesus in a world that is filled with opposition? Tricia advises taking these steps: (1) be still and listen, and (2) lead with love, knowing there’s a chance we might find out some day that we were wrong about what we thought was right! “We have one job. Everything falls into the lens of loving other people.” - Tricia “Much like the year 2020: fast and furious, and also long and slow.” – Rob “I don’t always know the right thing to do, Lord, but the fact that I want to do the right thing? I think that pleases You.” - a monk from an episode of West Wing, quoted by Rob “STOP IT. JUST STOP IT.” – Bob Newhart, playing a therapist on The Bob Newhart Show “Don’t start reading the Bible at the beginning! That’s a rough place to start! It gets hard fast after Genesis!” –Tricia “We are called to be known for one thing, and that one thing is love.” –Rob Resources Mentioned in this Episode: Be the Bridge: Pursuing God’s Heart for Racial Reconciliation, by Latasha Morrison The Prince of Egypt, movie How the Bible Actually Works, Peter Ens Irresistible, Andy Stanley
This week, the Circle of Hope pastors start with some talkback from Instagram. We asked what does discernment mean to you? This was in sync with our season of Mapping that Circle of Hope is doing right now. Mapping involves what we as a church will decide to do over the next year and beyond, being guided by the Holy Spirit into the great things we'll do next. After this, Jonny interviews Julie on her experience with the Bible, from when she was younger to how she learned to engage with it in community. Lastly, the pastors celebrate the things that have recently inspired them. From Gerard Manley Hopkins, to clothing drives, worship songs, and the gift of play. Episode 031 - COVID, Suffering & Jesus How are you doing with this COVID-19 thing? Are you afraid? Are you angry? Are you confused by all the different information about what to do? Are you just ready for it to be over? I get it. I've been all those things, and my feelings change from day today. Part of that is because this is a big deal, but part of it is because you and I—we're just not that good at dealing with suffering. Show Notes COVID-19 should not have been a surprise. It's a direct result of the way we have structured our lives and our world. The real surprise is how taking reasonable safety measures has become controversial, especially for churches. The absurd levels of reactivity speak directly to this: We don't handle suffering well. When we face suffering, our knee-jerk reaction is to deny it, try to explain it away or try to figure out who to blame. These are all ways to avoid facing suffering.Christians practice the same kind of denial, but with religious and spiritual tools.Perspectives that can help us in suffering:#1 - Suffering is Normal. (1st Peter 4:12). This is in contrast with our embedded American view that progress and prosperity is the norm.#2 - Suffering is an opportunity to experience Jesus (1st Peter 4:13) This is in contrast with our Modern American Christian view that prosperity and comfort is a sign of God's blessings. Many in the early church believed that our suffering was done in fellowship with Jesus, a sharing (koinoneo) in Jesus' experience. If suffering is normal, then it doesn't reflect on our faith or on God's presence. If our suffering is sharing in Jesus' suffering, then we can find God in the middle of our suffering. Those who have gone through the process of spiritual deconstruction can attest to the shame and damage that come along with any system or authority that claims with absolute certainty that they speak the mind and will of God. Deconstruction often begins with an "uh oh" moment - a revelation, discovery, or even a simple conversation that leads one to question if everything they've been told is wrong. Pete Enns knows these moments all too well because he's had many of them throughout his decades as a teacher and theologian. He's come to encourage people to embrace uncertainty and imagination when it comes to reading the Bible, yet feeling its trajectory. "The gospel is primary," Pete claims. "The Bible goes along for the ride." Interviewers: Jim Rohner and Jonathan Williams ABOUT PETE ENNS Pete Enns is an author, biblical scholar, and co-host of the podcast The Bible for Normal People. He's written numerous books about how to change our approach in reading and interpreting the Bible, including "The Sin of Certainty" and "How the Bible Actually Works." His 2005 book "Inspiration and Incarnation" ultimately led to his departure from Westminster Theological Seminary, which ultimately led him to Eastern University. He continues to instruct and inspire people going through faith deconstruction with his talks, blogs, and podcasts. He also has a rescue cat named Marmalade, who makes an appearance in this episode.
This is part 1 of our 11 part series, "Setting the Bible Free". In this episode I give some background and context to the series, explain what the name means, and give you a sneak peak behind the curtain at all the guests we have lined up for the show. Over the course of the next 11 weeks we'll look at different ideas about what the Bible is, progressive ways of thinking about the Bible, and will tackle some theologies, doctrines, and well known Bible passages all from a perspective that is different than what many of traditions have handed us. #LOVEWINS HOODIE! I am so excited to welcome Pete Enns to the podcast today. Pete is a college professor who has been teaching, writing and speaking about the Bible for over 20 years. He is a storyteller which is one reason why I love his writing but I also love that Pete isn’t afraid to lean in and ask hard questions. He values hearing the stories of everyday people and their struggles with the Bible. That drives so much of what he does with his writing and with his podcast, The Bible For Normal People. I have read two of his books, The Bible Tells Me So and How the Bible Actually Works, and have thoroughly enjoyed reading and wrestling through them. I want to let you know upfront that this is a vulnerable conversation. But it’s exactly what I want to model for you. I want us to have permission to ask questions. Permission to doubt. Permission to lean into the uncertainty that we feel about life. Permission to be critical thinkers when it comes to our faith. All of these things aren’t problems for our faith—they can be expressions of it. In this episode, we talk about the bible—what it is and what it isn’t. We talk about how to apply the way of wisdom when we approach the bible. And we dive into how to talk about the bible with our kids. The Bible means many things to many people, and its passages have been interpreted seven ways to Sunday; in turn those interpretations have spawned countless church denominations that all vary in their beliefs. For some, the Bible is the ultimate answer book for anything that life may present. But for others, there are questions that the Bible doesn’t seem to address, or if it does, it’s difficult to always understand the context of those thoughts and how they apply to our present day world. Pete Enns is a Bible scholar, a popular blogger and podcast host of The Bible for Normal People, and he’s here to tell us that the Bible is a “guide to a journey of wisdom in this life, as opposed to being an answer book for every question we might happen to have to ask of it.” His excellent new book called “How the Bible Actually Works” will give us comfort in that there is no “wrong way” to read the Bible and that the questions that stem from that reading aren’t obstacles, but catalysts to lead us into a deeper understanding of God. While the Bible is often “weaponized” and its text used to foster guilt and shame, Pete eschews the notion that we approach the Bible as a “rule book,” and wants us to recognize it as a beautiful, liberating book of wisdom that has guided the church forward generation after generation.
