You'll hear Bill talk about what it was like to announce the historic Cowboys/Packers "Ice Bowl" in 1967 in Green Bay where it was 30 below zero. It was so cold the inside of the glass in the press box was iced over and they couldn't see the field. You'll love hearing Bill recount one of the greatest football games of all time as he shares what he did to not lose focus on the game. Bill even announced wrestling matches at the historic Dallas Sportatorium. He talks about how he was hired to announce the matches on KRLD TV even though he had no experience with wrestling. Bill is very honest and transparent about how nervous he was to take on this gig. It eventually became a big part of his life. One of the biggest events in Bill's life happened at 12 Noon on Nov. 22nd in 1963. He was doing the local "Noon News" when President Kennedy was shot and killed. Bill was assigned to go to Dallas police station to do one of the nation's very first live broadcasts. He was there as Lee Harvey Oswald was brought into the station. At 1 o'clock in the morning, the police decided to do a press conference with Lee Harvey Oswald. It was here that Oswald heard for the very first time, from Bill Mercer, that he was being charged with the murder of the President of the United States. You'll even hear Bill Mercer discuss his insight on the theories that Oswald didn't act alone. He shared an incredible recounting of Oswald's actions following the assassination of Kennedy. Narrated by Bill Mercer. It seemed they were forever the bridesmaid. They were continually coming up short in the championship games. That was until 1972 and now you can relive the magic of a group that became known as “America's Team”. In Super Bowl VI, the Cowboys crushed the Dolphins 24-3, in which they rushed for a record 252 yards and their defense limited the Dolphins to a low of 185 yards while not permitting a touchdown for the first time in Super Bowl history. Dallas converted Chuck Howley's recovery of Larry Csonka's first fumble of the season into a 3-0 advantage and led at half time 10-3. After Dallas received the second-half kickoff, Duane Thomas led a 71-yard march in eight plays for a 17-3 margin. Howley intercepted Bob Griese's pass at the 50 and returned it to the Miami 9 early in the fourth period, and three plays later Roger Staubach passed 7 yards to Mike Ditka for the final touchdown. Thomas rushed for 95 yards and Walt Garrison gained 74. Staubach, voted the game's most valuable player, completed 12 of 19 passes for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Bill Mercer is one of the absolute giants of the play-by-play world.  The former voice of the Dallas Cowboys was also the first voice of the Texas Rangers.  He also called games for the White Sox and was on the air to cover the JFK assassination in addition to what he might be known for most....his play-by-play of World Class Championship Wrestling.  Bill Later became the voice of the University of North Texas and taught students at the school for years.  Those students went on the become the "Mercer Mafia."  We cover all those things and more...including which words to cut out of your pxp vocab in this week's pod.
