Answer this question: If you don't work today, will you still make money? What if you take the whole week off? Or the whole month? This is the biggest drawback of being a freelancer. You have to work more if you want to earn more. There are a number of consequences for this, but the biggest issue for creatives like us is that the more we work, the more we face burnout. The more we face burnout, the higher the chance that we'll lose the initial passion that drove us to this business in the first place. That means that the more we earn as freelancers, the more we'll face burnout. I'm sure you see the issue here... while you may love what you do, I'm sure you want to maintain a healthy balance between maintaining creativity and maintaining your bank account. None of us want to feel like we're on a hampster wheel of working just to pay the bills, but this is the sad reality of some of the most successful freelancers I know. They built amazingly successful careers (at least financially), but they unknowingly built a trap for themselves. As their income increased, so did their lifestyle and bills. As their bills increased, so did their dependency on their freelance income. This created a perpetual cycle of saying "yes" to projects they otherwise would have said "no" to if they didn't need the money. So how do we get out of this deadly cycle? Well... One method is to just keep your living expenses (and business expenses) as low as humanly possible. The other method (and one I much prefer) is to break away from directly trading your dollars for hours. This is the choice that Rachel Brenke took in her own businesses, which have allowed her to scale her income to over $9,000,000. While she does offer 1-to-1 services just like any typical freelancer, she's also built something called an "ascension ladder", which has allowed her to keep earning money regardless of whether she works this month or not. If you're still on the hours-for-dollars treadmill, and you want to break away, this week's episode of the 6 Figure Creative Podcast is for you. In this episode you'll discover: The art (and science) of niching down How to offer services and products in multiple niches Automating and outsourcing the stuff you don't want to do How to build an "ascension ladder" as a freelancer Why relying on a single point of failure can destroy a business The 80/20 of content marketing that actually brings in clients For full show notes, visit https://6figurecreative.com/214

Many women struggle with the question: What is my purpose? Of course, most of us know that we want to feel loved, successful, make a positive impact, and make enough money to feel satisfied, but we are often left with the following question: how? This week we mindfully explore your unique purpose and go on a journey through how to move that spark into a thriving business. As women, we often hold ourselves back, but once you do the work to get your life together, little stops your purpose, passion, and ambition from igniting. To help you mindfully avoid the pitfalls of work/life balance, how to start a business, and what you need to be successful, I sat down with Attorney, Creator, and team USA Runner Rachel Brenke, who hands over the foundational steps necessary to get started in any venture, how to create balance along the way, and how to be free of imposter syndrome. This next hour gives you the information to get started and how to thrive! So, be prepared to be fired up! Key Takeaways: 00:00 Introduction 02:14 Meet Rachel and how she is empowering women to own their purpose the same way she was thrust into it 03:42 The first steps into owning and creating your dreams. A question that can change everything: “What do I want?” 06:08 The most prominent barriers women come up against 06:42 When fear of failure stops us in our tracks 10:25 How to not use your circumstances as an excuse: leaning into intentionality 13:13 Each day, you must do an RGA: Revenue Generating Activity 14:56 Getting into the “How” of putting your dreams into action. 3-tiered formula to get started 19:00 Getting out of imposter syndrome 26:17 Committing yourself and your goals: the ins and outs and the how 28:25 The art of niching down and why it's important 31:05 How to stay focused: For every action, there needs to be a return 40:51 How to create balance and keeping burnout out of the equation 49:05 Taking the CliftonStrength Assessment is a significant player in understanding your leader/business style and strengths 53:05 You don't have to take every opportunity presented, and how a beginner's mindset is a winning mindset 57:08 What Rachel wished all women knew 60:12 Rachel's viral example of how we can all add to the marketplace 60:37 “Imperfect action is better than inaction.” 65:40 The critical takeaways for anyone ready to jump feet first into business 67:30 Rachel's 3 68:00 How to work with Rachel directly One of the biggest takeaways, at least for me, is that the women that each of us inspire to be isn't so much about our work ethic, it's about our impact—the way we serve ourselves, our lives, our family, our communities, businesses, our purpose. As a result, each of us has the power to move into action, to create a legacy, and to do so imperfectly. Because as Rachel said, “Imperfection action is better than no action at all.” Get started. Build your life through deep intention. Turn the whisper of desire into full-blown greatness. Last week we talked to Rachel Brenke and in that conversation a couple of themes came up that I'd like to revisit and reinforce. We talked about getting clear about what you want your life to look like in order to figure out how your business is going to serve you. We talked about how using that awareness is important in protecting ourselves from burnout and overwhelm and we discussed a little bit about how important it is to be ok with discovering maybe entrepreneurship isn't for you. These are things that are missing from most general fitness certifications and if you've been around a while you may have learned the hard way but do you really believe that everyone needs to learn the hard way? In this episode, Rachel Brenke, a multi-faceted entrepreneur and intellectual property attorney shared two stories with key takeaways: (1) Always establish good communication with your clients and (2) Know that no money is worth the stress and mistreatment. The first story started when Rachel was diagnosed with cancer in her early 20s, but she just shrugged it off since it was “impossible” for her age. Two years later, her cancer worsened, and she had to undergo therapy. As Rachel was about to head home after 3‑day radiotherapy, she was in the elevator with her client. After that, she received an email from that client. The second story was when a big shot photographer approached Rachel to help with a copyright infringement case. Rachel did what she was good at and produced results, aka “financial compensation” for her client's case. However, the client had some sort of different expectations. As the episode wraps up, Morgan and Rachel point out a lot of lessons, primarily on the good practices and preventive practices that every entrepreneur or business owner should have. Less is more and simplification is a powerful tidbit she discusses in this episode – having a clear message for a narrow avatar or target audience who needs what you have to offer (look at Apple as a great example). So sidenote - if you need a template, check out Rachel's site HERE. Back to the episode, right? So you pull out all the stops to grow your photography business or creative business, but is it possible that you might be missing something? I work with a lot of photographers and creative entrepreneurs that are primarily service based - like aestheticians, wedding professionals, even chocolatiers - and most of them are not brand new, but have a few years under their belts. They're starting to learn that maybe they can't do it all, all the time. I have heard SEVERAL of my students tell me that they don't really need a full contract, because they're not charging THAT much, and they're just not big enough to really need something legal in place. Rachel and I talk about contracts. Legal requirements and things to think about. Niching down, how to grow your photography business or creative business, and website help - in short, this episode has a TON of valuable information!

Going into business for yourself can be scary. There are forms to fill out, licenses to apply for, new checking accounts to set up. And then there's the whole business about contracts, services agreements, insurance—do I need it or not?—along with lots of other things that can send your head into a spin. Even if you're already in business and have been for a while, you might not feel like you have the best grasp on the legal, tax, business entity-ish side of things. (Maybe I'm talking about myself—yes, definitely—but I'm guessing I'm not alone.) That's why I invited Rachel Brenke to talk to us. Not only is she a lawyer, she's also a business consultant specializing in helping people in creative fields (like us!). Listen as we talk about: separating your personal and business "buckets" protecting your business (and yourself) with the proper business entity; contracts, services agreements, and web terms; and insurance. (Who knew there was such a thing as insurance for computers, scanners, printers, etc?) why you should NOT be operating a Sole Proprietorship how contracts can be the bad guy, so you don't have to be four important types of legal documents you might need Links & Stuff: Rachel Brenke's website Rachel's books Still need to submit your listing to my upcoming directory? Do you find contracts, insurance and the legal side of your small business a bit daunting? Well, this episode is JUST for you. My special guest, Rachel Brenke takes the fear out of legally protecting yourself and your business, breaking it all down in simple, practical terms. Rachel's genius is in helping creative entrepreneurs with understanding their legal needs and shares her wisdom on The Simplifiers Podcast. Because as Rachel says, “ignorance of the law is not a defense of the action.” Here's how to (simply) protect yourself and your small business. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: • Common legal mistakes entrepreneurs make such as using others intellectual property and causing “copyright infringement” • Why “re-gramming” someone else's photo (on Instagram) that they found on Google is illegal and the NUMBER 1 thing Rachel has been dealing with in her law business • Mary shares a horrifying tale of a woman in Egypt who stole The Simplifiers logo and name from a Google search and starting her own company...and how she stopped it • Why you need to have a line item in your budget for legal stuff (hint: it's a non-negotiable!) • What is the “Legal Trifecta” that ALL businesses should have in place to protect your business. Think of these three things as hurdles between you and your clients so that, if a problem arises, they have to go over them before they can get to you personally. • Business Formation - forming a separate legal entity so if you are implicated and liable, you personally, your family or your home assets will not be in jeopardy. • Sole Proprietorship (NOT recommended) • LLC (the majority of businesses) • Corporation • Liability Insurance (homeowners will not protect you!) • Legal documents (website terms and conditions and privacy policy are both non-negotiable in Rachel's opinion) • Tips for drafting your website's Privacy Policy and contracts for services (terms and language to include when it comes to attorney's fees) • How legal documents are your “front line,” enabling clients to see you as being professional and building confidence in you and your business • Why it's best to acquire BOTH a lawyer AND a CPA • The latest tips on GDPR regulations in Europe and how you can and cannot use the emails that you capture. PRO TIPS OF THE DAY: • Call your insurer once a year! • Invest upfront in legal help before you find yourself in a much more expensive predicament.
