Passage: 14 Sing for joy, Daughter Zion; shout loudly, Israel! Be glad and celebrate with all your heart, Daughter Jerusalem! 15 The Lord has removed your punishment; he has turned back your enemy. The King of Israel, the Lord, is among you; you need no longer fear harm. 16 On that day it will be said to Jerusalem: “Do not fear; Zion, do not let your hands grow weak. 17 The Lord your God is among you, a warrior who saves. He will rejoice over you with gladness. He will be quiet in his love. He will delight in you with singing.” 18 I will gather those who have been driven from the appointed festivals; they will be a tribute from you and a reproach on her. 19 Yes, at that time I will deal with all who oppress you. I will save the lame and gather the outcasts; I will make those who were disgraced throughout the earth receive praise and fame. 20 At that time I will bring you back, yes, at the time I will gather you. I will give you fame and praise among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes. The Lord has spoken. -- Zephaniah 3:14-20 (CSB) Song: Angels from the Realms of Glory (Emmanuel) (https://open.spotify.com/track/4Iq3imaz3hMs9hSBIcD9sP?si=96cfd237bad44a07) by Brenton Brown, Henry Thomas Smart, James Montgomery, Michael Rossback, Paul Baloche Lyrics: Angels from the realms of glory Wing your flight o'er all the earth Ye who sang creation's story Now proclaim Messiah's birth Come and worship Come and worship Worship Christ the newborn King Shepherds in the field abiding Watching o'er your flocks by night God with man is now residing Yonder shines the infant light Come and worship Come and worship Worship Christ the newborn King Emmanuel Emmanuel You are the God who saves us Worthy of all our praises Emmanuel Emmanuel Come have Your way among us We welcome You here Lord Jesus Come have Your way among us We welcome You here Lord Jesus Come and worship Worship Christ the newborn King God is with us even now His love is here His love is here Emmanuel Emmanuel Emmanuel Emmanuel Prayer: O Lord Jesus Christ, you sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Grant that the ministers and stewards of your mysteries may likewise make ready your way, by turning the hearts of the disobedient toward the wisdom of the just, that at your second coming to judge the world, we may be found a people acceptable in your sight; for with the Father and the Holy Spirit you live and reign, one God, now and for ever. For various reasons, we don't like authority. We've known humans with authority to be arrogant and smug, and have seen them use their power to advance themselves at our expense. In Mark 11:1-11, however, we see another version of authority; one that is attractive and good. Jesus approaches Jerusalem as King, not in in pomp and circumstance, but in humility. And he doesn't come to oppress, but to save the very ones who have resisted His Kingship. Sermon title from Brenton Brown's song of the same name. Passage: 1 Hallelujah! How good it is to sing to our God, for praise is pleasant and lovely. 2 The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem; he gathers Israel's exiled people. 3 He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds. 4 He counts the number of the stars; he gives names to all of them. 5 Our Lord is great, vast in power; his understanding is infinite. 6 The Lord helps the oppressed but brings the wicked to the ground. 7 Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; play the lyre to our God, 8 who covers the sky with clouds, prepares rain for the earth, and causes grass to grow on the hills. 9 He provides the animals with their food, and the young ravens what they cry for. 10 He is not impressed by the strength of a horse; he does not value the power of a warrior. 11 The Lord values those who fear him, those who put their hope in his faithful love. 12 Exalt the Lord, Jerusalem; praise your God, Zion! 13 For he strengthens the bars of your city gates and blesses your children within you. 14 He endows your territory with prosperity; he satisfies you with the finest wheat. 15 He sends his command throughout the earth; his word runs swiftly. 16 He spreads snow like wool; he scatters frost like ashes; 17 he throws his hailstones like crumbs. Who can withstand his cold? 18 He sends his word and melts them; he unleashes his winds, and the water flows. 19 He declares his word to Jacob, his statutes and judgments to Israel. 20 He has not done this for every nation; they do not know his judgments. We thank you for having poured down upon us so many blessings of this life; we thank you for our health and strength; for our food and dress; and for all the comforts and conveniences which we enjoy. For these, and for all your various and great mercies, we would render unto you a grateful heart; and we would endeavor to show our gratitude, not with our lips only, but with our lives; by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you, in holiness and righteousness, all our days on earth. Brenton Brown is a smart and capable person. Awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to study politics and philosophy at Oxford University, he would have every reason to believe himself strong enough to conquer every obstacle in life. But in 2003, both he and his wife were diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. A debilitating condition, this also led him to co-write the well known praise song: Everlasting God. Brenton has worked with just about every big name in Christian music, including the Gettys, Big Daddy Weave, Stuart Townend, Chris Tomlin, and more. He was a high achieving person who's future was stifled by illness. And yet, for a man struggling through chronic fatigue, Scriptures describing an everlasting God who will not become faint or grow weary were exactly what he needed to get through the day. It turns out, we all need this everlasting God. In this episode of the Great Stories Podcast (originally recorded in 2013), you'll hear more of the story behind this song, as well as a conversation concerning the worship wars within the church.

Life is hard, and we need to be ready for it when it shows up.I believe that a process called pre-hab is one of the keys to handling the hard things life throws at us. And for me, two of the key tools in my pre-hab are worship music and good books. Today, I introduce you to one of my favorite songwriters, Brenton Brown, and I give you some of my favorite books I read in 2022. These are books that I found to be amazingly helpful and powerful, and I think they'll help you, too. so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.John 13:4-5This week we will be looking at the word that Brenton Brown shared with us on Sunday entitled ‘The Jesus Way'.Firstly, it is important for us to remember that if we want to know what God is like, the best way to learn is to look at Jesus. We as children of God should follow the example set by Jesus because He Himself said that ‘anyone who has seen me has seen the Father' (John 14:9). Jesus is perfect theology!Secondly, we need to realise that Jesus served those around Him. He got down on His knees and washed the feet of the disciples, even though it was a dirty, unpleasant job. He did this to show the disciples and us that no one is above serving others. We should seek to imitate His example in this by serving those around us, even when it is uncomfortable and inconvenient. Finally, in the Kingdom of God, this principle of serving is linked to greatness. Jesus changes the definition of greatness from being successful, powerful, rich and beautiful to being a servant. If we want to be great, we should focus on loving and caring for others.Who could you show the love of Jesus to by serving them? What could you do to serve your family, friends, coworkers and community? What does greatness mean to you?

Selah 20 Our God is a God of salvation, and to GOD, the Lord, belong deliverances from death. (Psalm 68:1–20 ESV) Musical Reflection: Piano Sonata No. 16 in C Major, K. 545: II. Andante by W. A. Mozart Reflection Notes: In true fashion for Mozart's middle movements, this Andante blooms slowly with gentle and delicate notes; the melody ascends in joyful fashion at the most climactic points before settling back down with the satisfying left hand harmonies. Prayer: Almighty God, give us wisdom to perceive you, intellect to understand you, diligence to seek you, patience to wait for you, eyes to behold you, a heart to meditate on you and life to proclaim you, through the power of the Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ. -Attributed to Benedict of Nursia

In this episode the team, Tim Hughes, Luke & Anna Hellebronth, Nick Herbert & Nick Drake explore 'Worship & Lament' plus hear a special guest interview with Brenton Brown. Brenton Brown, originally from South Africa, found breakout success as a worship leader and songwriter as part of the Vineyard movement in the UK, writing several worship standards across multiple albums including “Lord Reign In Me”, “I Surrender”, “Humble King”, “All Are Thirsty” and “Hallelujah (Your Love Is Amazing)”. Brenton and his wife Jude relocated to California in 2008 and he has continued to create incredibly powerful worship songs including “Everlasting God”, “Lion and the Lamb”, “Worthy Is Your Name”, “Impossible Things” and many more. Brenton stretched his creativity in 2014 writing Grammy Award-nominated CCM song “Soul On Fire” for Third Day which spent an incredible 11 weeks at #1 on Christian AC radio. In 2018, tragedy struck the Brown family as their home was completely destroyed by the Woosley wildfire, losing all of the contents. Miraculously, Brenton’s writing shed on the property was spared along with his songwriting notes and instruments. Brenton regularly leads worship and attends Vintage Church L.A. where he currently serves as worship pastor.

Episode 56: Erick Cole - Grammy Winning ArtistErick Cole is a professional musician, songwriter, and artist originally from Nashville. Upon graduation from Belmont University, in typical tight-knit Nashville fashion, the debut CD of Erick’s band other ended up in the ears of Christian music powerhouse dc Talk. One thing lead to another, and Erick began co-writing and recording with vocalist Kevin Max. Soon after, he toured the U.S. on dc Talk’s Solo Tour. That partnership lead to a Grammy win with their song “Be” which was on the Rock Gospel Album of the Year, ‘Solo EP’ by dc talk.Erick spent the next years touring the world with Kevin Max, as well as writing and playing on six of his solo projects. Through that relationship, he also had the opportunity to work with the renowned guitarist Adrian Belew (Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Paul Simon), co- writing and earning the title “multi-instrumentalist’ by playing the unusual instruments balalaika and theremin on Belew’s Side Two record. He toured for three and half years with artist and producer Richard Swift (also of The Shins/Black Keys/Arcs), worked on a film score at Skywalker Ranch (for the independent film Dear Mr. Cash, nominated for best score at the Nashville Film Festival), continued to play shows with Kevin Max, and toured with Brenton Brown, all while having an artistic collaboration with musician Travis Taylor in a small studio near Santa Monica, CA.Besides recording sessions for other artists, Erick also co-produced five ep’s for artist and professional skateboarder Josh Harmony, and he enjoyed a role for a few years as Music Director of Calvary Church in Pacific Palisades, California. He adds, “I enjoy everything I do, whether it’s touring, songwriting, recording. I like them all. Music can be a business like anything else, but the ability to diversify keeps it fresh.”After recently relocating back to Nashville, he has been busy songwriting, recording in his home studio, and touring; including just finishing a national tour with artist Matthew Perryman Jones. He’s quick to add that, for him, “There’s a simple joy that’s derived equally from playing guitars at home, in the studio, or in front of an audience.”

Human kings had failed the Israelites but Isaiah foretells of a king who would have the Spirit of the Lord rest upon him in an unprecedented way. Even Paul, with his pedigree, miraculous conversion, and impact in ministry did not consider himself “arrived”. Rather, he continually pressed on in his Christian walk and determined to live more and more like Christ. In today's podcast, I talk to you about the 10 tools (apps and such) that I love, and that make ministry easier/better. 1. EVERNOTE I use Evernote for TONS of stuff....Sign up for Evernote for free Sign up for Evernote for free Evernote - you can scan copies in and store them... You can have tons of notebooks to keep notes organized. Or just tag them... Free is good...probably too good. You might like to have plus/premium features, too. 2. PLANNING CENTER ONLINE'S SERVICES ANDMUSIC STAND APPS I've been using Planning Center Online since 2011. And I've never looked back. When I first started using PCO we just called it PCO and it was just for worship planning. Now it's a collection of church apps that take care of everything from managing your rooms and resources to checking in your kids o collecting your offering. I think they're working on a Potluck app next, too. Learn more about Planning Center I love that they base your costs on size and usage. To find out what your church would pay, here's a handy price calculator. This screenshot of a service doesn't do it justice...it does SO much. 3. SONGSELECT SongSelect is an add-on of CCLI (Christian Copyright License International). They offer lead sheets and chord sheets for (probably) 90% of the music your church is doing or will do. If you already have CCLI for your licensing, you should go ahead and just get this service. It's the most economical way to provide good, reliable charts fort your team. Learn more about SongSelect 4. PRAISECHARTS PraiseCharts is SongSelect's hipper (and higher priced) cousin. But I like hanging out with him, too. When I want a specific arrangement of a song (like Paul Baloche's version of God My Rock instead of Brenton Brown's version), PraiseCharts is the way to go. They offer a lot more options for each song, too: Recently, I've been opting to spend a little more for better quality charts (and the click track) from PraiseCharts more often. But I always still start with SongSelect (since those charts are already paid for with my subscription). Then I go to PraiseCharts if I don't like what I see there. Learn more about PraiseCharts 5. SPOTIFY PREMIUM (AND ITUNES/AMAZON) This combination of tools are my go-to source(s) for finding new and vetting new music (Spotify), then purchasing the mp3 to use as a reference recording with my team. In the podcast, I talk about WHY it's important to have a reference recording. Here are a few other things I cover: Why you need a "Rehearsal License" if you're going to share mp3s/recordings. Reasons I'll choose iTunes over Amazon for buying mp3s (and vice-versa) A creative way we use Spotify to share our setlists with the congregation and encourage them to sing more. And how I messed with one of our youth interns with Spotify... Learn more about Spotify And here's a link to Amazon and iTunes, in case you've been living in a cave in Wisconsin since 2003. Not that there's anything wrong with that... 6. ADOBE MEDIA ENCODER If you're going to have upload mp3s to PCO's Services or any other planning software, you're probably going to need a tool like Adobe Media Encoder. It's a great program, but you can't buy it as a standalone app. So unless you have need of the whole Adobe Creative Suite, you probably won't get this program. But you need something like it. And I talk about why in the podcast. Here's an online alternative I tried out and liked: Media.io And here's a list of open source downloadable apps that are altternatives to Media Encoder: Alternatives (NOTE: (NOTE: I have not tested any of these, nor am I endorsing. Do some research before you download or use any online tool.) 7. TRANSPOSR.COM Another tool I use to manage my mp3s for my team is Transposr.com. It's a free resource provided by PCO that's simple to use AND just got a pretty makeover with some new functionality: I talk in the episode about WHY it's so important to transpose your recordings for your musicians. 8. DROPBOX I use Dropbox for mundane office stuff (which is part of being a worship leader, unfortunately) AND for some fun stuff in my worship like for auditions. (OK, they're fun for me, maybe not for the people auditioning.) Find out why I like Dropbox so much in the episode. 9. MOLESKINE DAILY PLANNER No. I don't still write my appointments down in a book. Why? Because a book doesn't ding at me when it's time to leave for the appointment. I use myMoleskine as a different kind of productivity tool: a daily thought-organizer for my to-dos. Learn more in the episode. 10. SCANSNAP ScanSnap is a document scanner that easily scans documents and puts them where ever you want them to go: Email, Dropbox, a specific folder on your hard drive, or, my favorite: Evernote. I talk about how and why I use it in the episode. A couple things to note: I love this tool enough that I bought one for home and for my church office. I bought both of mine used, and they work great. (A tip for my fellow cheapos out there.) BONUS: JING Jing is an app by TechSmith that lets you easily take screenshots, then mark those up - like put arrows and add text. And then you can save it to a file, or copy it and paste it into an email or Evernote, or you can upload it to tech smith's server and share the link with people. (By the way, this screen capture and all the other ones above are all done with Jing.) I talk about how I use it more for WorshipTeamCoach.com stuff; but I also find it's helpful in my worship ministry job.
